Chivalry 2 is one of those games that could have really benefited from a Day 1 Steam release.

Take a look at Chivalry 1 & MORDHAU's all-time peaks:

As you can see, there is a huge market for these type of games on Steam.

...and here's Chivalry 2's all-time peak at the moment:

I believe this is one of the clearest examples to how launching exclusively on Epic can effectively kill a game's hype. This game should be way more popular than it actually is. If you remember, Chivalry 2 was getting great reviews and word-of-mouth around the time of its original launch. It's still a very good game, which is why it didn't flop in its Steam release... But if it came out Day 1 on Steam, I honestly believe it would have sold like gangbusters and surpassed MORDHAU's peak by a considerable amount.

By launching exclusively on Epic, the game's population took a huge nosedive after only a month. The majority of servers were empty and only a couple were filled during peak time. The game was borderline dead. Of course, this has all changed thanks to its Steam release... But by taking the Epic deal, I truly believe the developers missed out on having a massive playerbase for their game.

Chivalry 2's initial release took two months to sell 1 million copies across EGS, Xbox and Playstation. In comparison, Mordhau took about six weeks to sell a million copies on Steam alone.

I really do think Torn Banner and Tripwire left a ton of money on the table by going EGS exclusive with Chivalry 2.

Yeah, I agree. We will never know the hypothetical world, but they probably could have sold far more, far faster had they included Steam in their launch. They would have had a year Steam summer/fall/winter/spring sales to boot as well.

Why pay anyone for anything? Didn’t know Tim was a luxury communist.
That's not even what bothers me. The entire premise of his post is incorrect. Epic's entire net worth is valued at $30 billion. The company typically makes several billion dollars a year across all their games and services, but keeping Fall Guys on Steam will cost Epic $9 billion? Give me a break. I can't decide if he wrote that post out of ignorance or is intentionally being deceptive.

Anyway, in lighter news here is another NFT sca, er, game, that's launching on EGS.

Funny how CEO billionaires know how market caps work when avoiding tax but forget when literally any other topic is brought up.

I know I sound like a broken record with the sales charts, but Fall Guys is frankly not doing well at all. It was only in 12th place its first day and is currently in 16th place. I know if I were fudging the charts, I'd put my hot new F2P game straight at #1.

I remember him complaining a lot when that proposed billionaire tax was being discussed last year. In retrospect it's funny since the rich and powerful never pay their fair share but ¯\(ツ)

it seemes epic try to blind follow the hot topic of the moment, only when it's already dead, they bought fall guys after the peak was reached and amog us was the new shining game, partychat had the same problem , and the exclusive games selection suffer from this approach.

one would expect it to be much higher difference where one is while free and the other was while paid
Twice the peak Steam users is pretty impressive. That would make it like third place on the Steam charts right now behind CSGO and Dota. I don't think it was ever going to do like a million CCU on PC because of its age and the fact plenty of PC users got their fill years ago.

Fall Guys was always going to have a massive launch similar to Rocket League, especially since it released for the first time on Xbox and Switch. The question is will players stick around or will they bounce? Rocket League peaked at about 1.8 million CCU its first weekend (across all platforms) and now peaks at about 350-400k.

The Steam CCU peak was 172k so I guess the EGS version peaked at >344k.
I mean, it's F2P, if it didn't beat previous PC CCU peak it would be worrying for them as heck.

Although, to be honest, it shows where do they shine the most, with free content, when it comes to paid content... things change quite fast.

My guess is their new record CCU is including Steam + EGS players from the other day, so twice the prior PC CCU is ~345K. Steam had about ~56K of those, so about ~289K from EGS. Could be wrong, but I think that is closer to what they mean.

Also, it is not even clear from that tweet alone if they mean the total CCU (PC & all consoles) is 2x as high as their all-time PC CCU, but I would be generous and assume they are just comparing PC to PC. Again, why not just come right out and say, hey, we had X CCU users across all platforms?

I could be wrong too, but I think this game will drop much faster than RL since not only is monetization is worse than before, but the system before contributed to the reason to win in order to obtain skins which was arguably an important driver to play.

I've had companies make charges on old cards before, Many years ago Microsoft managed to renew a Live sub using an out of date card.

I've never seen a company call up the bank to get the new details though. Seems exactly like something Epic would do. I bet it was Tim personally.

Not sure how it works in the US or other countries, but here in the UK when you renew your card your provider can (unless you opt out) send your card details to places where you’ve previously used your card for them to update. Not sure how it works in detail but it is all automatic.

All you need to do next time you make a purchase is confirm you CCV security number on the signature strip and maybe complete a 2FA with your online banking app or SMS.

No idea how Epic can request your details and charge the card again, however. And I have no idea why any good bank would agree to such a request. There should always be an authorisation check with first purchases with new card details, and periodically after that.

i dotn really see how that excuses it tbh ... like even if VISA has such service in the US its still requires the request from merchant
I think most merchants, especially ones that sell recurring subscriptions, will have automated systems that identify expiring cards and during that period query the issuer for updated details.

Chances are the customer agreed to this data being made available as part of a terms of service with their bank, or forgot to opt out if that option is available to them.

Not sure it’s worth shitting on Epic for this. In my view this is a useful customer convenience feature since updating the dozens of sites you use with new card details is a pain in the ass on a good day.

I changed my debit card last month and about 75% of the sites/services I used had the new details pre-populated, including the one I use most frequently: Apple Pay.
