Even though I had it wishlisted I jumped totally blind as I didn't even remember when I put that game there and watching the trailer now I don't even remember it before lol.

So it's a FPS, and the enemies appeared only in certain places so you can explore and enjoy the vista, the combat was fun but the weapon definitely lacks some impact, the enemies attacks are all energy balls in different patterns and going by the store description they are going for the bullet hell combat.

Talking about visuals, it's looking really good, I may be a bit biased there as I like that aesthetic, but the red tone helped in setting the mood of the game for me. Overall the demo is short taking place in an underground location and it can give some idea of what they plan to do with the full game. Performance wise it wasn't the best as I had some stuttering though it was locked at 60fps.

A 3D bullet hell with a 3rd person/over the shoulder(over the wing?) perspective. Normally I hate bullet hells, but the music, the sense of speed, and surprisingly good kb&m controls drew me in, Soundtrack is classic 90s midi goodness. Very reminiscent of Turtles in Time's soundtrack for the length of time I put in the demo.

Missiles Away

Feels more like a proof of concept/mechanics demo than a full game demo, but certainly has an appeal to its rough state.
Plays like a late 90s vehicular combat game, but without much sense of being in a vehicle or any real weight to anything for that matter.
Liked the soundtrack, but would need more from this to consider pulling the trigger on a full version. Also, having no menu to 'exit/quit' from is a sign of just how undercooked this is, even as a demo

Hot Blood

A beat 'em up/hack and slash that nails the gameplay,, but I felt kinda awful, as it's clearly a female main character made with male gaze in mind. Her characterization/VO is kinda [movie]Buffy the Vampire Slayer-esque, but her low poly, big butt and slinky walk paired with the 'dressing room' mechanic made me feel like a skeeze the entire time. If it could reframe the attractive female protag into less of a walking sexytoy, I'd more easily recommend it. Also, kinda short demo with only '5' stages that I could access.

Be sure to @ me if you guys run into any good sidescrollers or 3d platformers. Time to dig in :blobheadset:

I gave this a quick go. It's basically Puyo Puyo, but with saw blades that are trying to kill you. It can be very unforgiving. It's definitely a mix of the two games, but that might not be for me.

Echoes of the Living

This is a love letter to old survival horrors games, specially Resident Evil 2 though I didn't manage to get far into the demo as I was getting too annoyed by the tank controls. It's not a bad game, but it's not for me.

Crime O'Clock

A hidden object game with puzzles and a changing environment as the puzzle goes backwards and forwards in time is certainly novel. I feel like it's promising but not sure if it really stuck with me. Seems well polished so far and everything though.

MythForce

Apparently it's been on EGS in early access for a while and they've added very little content to it, but the foundation seems fun and I love the style

The Matchless Kungfu

What is happening. There are so many things. Everything is something and bars are going up everywhere and I'm fighting monkeys and these snakes have some moves yo. Also a bandit ran up to me and his intimidation backfired so now he's my bro but I can't break his shack like my quest wants unless I want bad karma. I broke my leg jumping off a cliff and a dude ran up, paid me 500 coin, and carried me to a hospital so I could heal.

Anyway, I think I liked it but the translation is rough and the game is complex (maybe?) and I barely touched on the systems, there are towns and production and merchanting and taming animals and free form building I guess. I don't entirely understand what kind of game it is, but it absolutely is doing a thing.

Thronefall

Tower Defense game where you control a character that moves around the map and attacks stuff and also build up and upgrade a base with stuff like towers, walls, money generating buildings, troop buildings in between waves

the hour or so I spent playing it flew by, it executes what it sets out to do very well and the buildings all have set building points(ie there's specific points on the map where you can build towers, specific points on the map where you can build walls etc) that makes that portion quick to manage which makes the game feel pretty snappy overall

Station to Station

It's a puzzle game about connecting different resources through train stations. It's chill and the voxel style is a plus for me.
En Garde

One of the games that I got interested after one of the non E3 conferences. I was curious how it could play, and it plays quite well. Don't expect, at least in the demo, huge open environments and non linear progress, the focus here is the combat and as I put previously I found it fun and fluid. Definitely a game that I'll keep an eye for the release.

Little Nemo and the Nightmare Fiends

You can tell that it is an early build though the character visuals are very similar to the source material, and the music was really good. Currently there are only two levels (you select them in the load screen) and a boss fight. I'm cruious to see where this one is going.

Another Space Opera

Another one with a good soundtrack, though I'm not in the mood for this type of game right now. A minor nitpick that may not bother or affect others, but I found some places to distinguish if it was a platform or not.

Sniper Killer

Civvie11 bait. Low poly, black comedy FPS in the same vein as Cruelty Squad. I'm definitely intrigued by this one, since it's clearly an over the top comedy, but plays like a quake1 engine single dev shooter. Very grind house approach to everything.

Dreadfire

Shoot for health, melee for ammo.
Interesting premise that doesn't quite work for me (feels like an arena shooter, but the mechanics don't match that fast paced vibe, to me anyway),It is however literally a single dev who's a student, so I can't fault it for being rough .

En Garde!

Cartoony swashbuckler. Mechanics feel tight, the graphics are bright and colourful. Like a Saturday morning Assassin's Creed if ubisoft wasn't involved. AI seems pretty dumbed down for parts of the demo, but it can be overlooked

Skator Gator 3D

That was a nice surprise! It's part 3D platform and part on rails where you grind your skate through pipes. The controls were good and there are value in replaying the levels as you can try to find the secrets, beat the time and get all the collectibles. Nabs You may want to check this one.

Fortune's Run

Do you know how there are a lot of games that pay homage to older FPS? This is one of them, and it's so good. My issue so far is with the font, sometimes it's hard to read whats in the screen, but one of the devs said they are working on it. If you like old FPS, hard combat and fast movement give the demo a try.

Had this on my wishlist for a long time and it looks like it'll meet all my expectations and then some. Technically it's a visual novel, but it has so much production value poured into it, it feels more like a Life is Strange game. Tempted to get this on release.

Another thing I've had on my wishlist since the first trailer dropped. It will remain on my wishlist after having played the demo, but the game felt quite constricted, to the point where I thought this would be better if it were a movie where I could just sit back and enjoy rather than having to walk a couple of steps and click a button on some object or another before the game launches into another 5-10 minute voice-acted conversation.

Cat Simulator. Can't compare with Stray, since I haven't played Stray yet. It's cute and plays well. It'll be a huge hit. I'll buy it for sure.

First disappointment of the week, I've had this one on my wishlist since the first trailer dropped as well, and after having played the demo, I've taken it off. Story and scenario feel cobbled together from all over the place, the voice-acting is inconsistent in quality, the game physics are glitchy and the main puzzle mechanic just isn't very good or interesting.

In addition to the games I posted about in the main Steam thread, I also checked out these two, which were both great:

This Bed We Made

A little janky, but I love the idea of peeping through people's things as a hotel room cleaner, and then uncovering some dark conspiracy of murder or something.

Just really presses all my buttons and I'm super jazzed to play this one... if the developer can iron out the texture resolution bugs. Nothing worse than trying to read a letter that doesn't render properly while it's held up to your face.

Viewfinder

The central gameplay mechanic of picking up a photo and then being able to "set" that photo in your environment and walk into it and explore it is brilliant. What's even better is when you get a little 90s-style instant camera and you get to take photos, then explore those photos to solve puzzles.

Some mind-bending stuff - I love it!

Other than a very inaccessible menu and a bug with how the game renders in 16:10 resolutions (aka my Steam Deck) I had a great time playing this demo and I'm looking forward to the full game.

this was really fun, the demo kinda sold me on this even though it's just....profoundly not my thing in general

my only real concern is that even though it was really fun to mess around with in the demo for a half hour or so i'm not really fully convinced it'll have enough depth to it for a full game, we'll see what reviews have to say about that I suppose

Nice dark fantasy village management with some RTS vibes. I’m unfortunately not convinced by some UI choices and pretty sure they will stay (villagers highlighting is too soft / lack of info on why we are starving and how to fix it, buggy double click to focus on a character).
Solid, I’m down for more.

Haven't had time to play too many demos this time around, but I recommend this one:

Supernatural Max Payne, basically, with a very stylish combination of retro low-poly art assets and modern lighting effects. Not sure yet if there's enough variety here to sustain it for the entire campaign, and the self-serious narration may not be to everyone's taste, but what's here is very promising

Olliefrog Toad Skater

this pretty much is THPS but the demo is a bit rough around the edges

Little Kitty, Big City

I wasn't expecting to have so much fun with it. You're a house cat that fall off while sleeping and now needs to go back to your home, all this while doing cat things like making people trip, meowing, zooming for no reason, trying to catch birds (the cat doesn't kill the birds in the game), talking to other animals and so on.

Terror of the Seven Seas

Open world piracy and ship-to-ship combat. mechanically decent, but it feel like it needs more of narrative trappings to give the gameplay some focus. The demo literally just drops you into the ocean with a boat and offers all texts tutorials and says 'go'. A bit jank, given some spelling errors in the menu, but overlookable. There do appear to be hints of more, but locked away in the full version

Gord

RTS-adventure that focuses (so far) on base building and management over the WH4K/CoH-style capture and hold the point. Don't like that battles turn into a mess of the coloured UI elements, but there is definitely some solid gameplay here.

Fortune's Run

What if Deus Ex was a 90s DOS game, with its aesthetics and world way deeper in 80s cyberpunk? That's what Fortune's Run seems to be.
Solid mechanics for an ImmSim, and the voice acting is top notch. If you're a genre fan, definitely check this out.

A slow-burn exploration mystery game that puts the player in the shoes of a hotel maid in 1950s Montreal, Canada, where the guests are strange and what you find in their rooms is even stranger. This one came as a surprise, I added it from the Next Fest frontpage just on the strength of the thumbnail and the description and after playing the demo, this is a guaranteed buy for me.

This demo treats you to a couple of vertical slices from the game and I'm really despairing after having played it because the first two are incredibly strong - it starts out almost as a walking simulator style exploration game, then becomes creepy / spooky exploration with light puzzling, then finally turns into a stealth game, and that last part was just atrocious to play, especially for a game that's supposed to release in less than a month from now.

PC gaming purists will probably also balk at how the game more or less insists on heavy post-processing including motion-blur and is somewhat input-laggy, which isn't really a problem until the game wants you to sneak past enemies.

I'll keep it on the wishlist hoping that maybe one or two years after release, it might be in a shape that's actually fit for release.

This demo was actually available in the previous Next Fest already, but I didn't get to it in time. It's a playable teaser of an upcoming horror game that will be similar in theme and technology, but the story of the demo is self-contained and has no direct relationship to the game that's in development. 2014's P.T. is an obvious inspiration, but this demo is much lighter on the jump scares and (thankfully) also on the difficulty of the puzzles blocking progress. I enjoyed it a lot.

So once again tried a few,

Lies of P(ee)
Pinocchioborne , one of the best souls clones i play in last few years with super meaty demo, will probably end up in my Top 2023 list if the final game will be as great as the demo

Broken Roads

Strayan fallout clone , looks nice but most of the demo was basically just a tutorial of doing some errands for people ,seems to bemsotly narrativedriven rather than combat .. but too soon to judge for now ... lets say ypromising

Station to Station

Great looking voxel puzzler about building tranroads acros the map ... really fan but demo a bit too short and its quite unclear if late maps will hold out ... really primising and lovely to look at

Iron Meat

basically modern take on clasic Contra with strong meat fetish and tight gameplay ... great funs

Wizards with a Gun

Wizard- don't starve mixed with Bastion elements :) Visuals ae great, UI is cleara and simple anf gameplay is fun ... you build up your "beyond the time and space" base and from there you got to expeditions to safe your ofiginal workds before too late ... great fun

En Garde

silly action adventure comedy fencing game sometimes in semi open arenas (really enjoyed trowing pots on enemise). Combat is like more accessible Sekiro with lot of focus on parry . Pretty great

MythForce

This is a weird one ... its like saturday morning cartoon rogluelike , really like the cartoon vibe and idea of it , but the combat and the movement in the demo felt bit weird and sluggish , which is weird in a PvE Coop game .... so if they gix that it could be really good

PS: also itts funyn to play it as nextfest demo , given the game is early access egsclusive until November :upside-down-face:

Jusant

action climbing adventure ,its fun if bit hard and can be quite zen if you get in the flow , but the demo was bit of a mess techncially , and the controls needs tweeking ... promising

Stunt Derby

simple super dumb "racing BR" cocept , but quote fun and full of chaos, aquite technically rough atm

Laika: Aged Through Blood

Mteroidvania with a cowboy dog on a bike , crazy idea , great aduiovisuals , so far quite adult story .... its kinda like mix of hollow knight and elastomania :-D Only thing that is iffy atm is some of the controls ... but devs already mentioned its one of the things they will look into ... one of the higlights for sure

Did another small batch ... this bastch been really good

Viewfinder

gorgeous puzzler about art , pictures and perception. You basically take and place the photos to bend reality .Demos is basically just a tutorial and a tease, but already creative enough .. cant wait to see the ideas in full game. One of the highligts of the fest for me!

Soul Stalker

survivors game with rogulike progression through arena with lovely paper.esque art. Bit simple but good fun. Promising if they nail the later game progression and run variety

Luna Abyss

This one quite surprised me , its was not what i expected originally. Its esencially a FPS bullethell set in spectacular and creepy world . VA is good, art direction is great and movement (you plaform a bunch) feels good. Only the actuall combat mechanics are bit iffy ... but might just have been the starting riffle with lock-on being intentionally iffy . So it might end up being great depending on the weapon variety . highly promising

Gord

Slavic survival colony builder . Really nice artstyle and artdirection leaning heavilly into dark and gritty slavic fantasy , music helps aswell. Some of the controls felt bit clunky leading sometimes to a bitcumbersome microing, but wasnt bad enough to kill my enjoynemnt. What i really liked was the design of the "horrors" and you can even sacrifice a child to ark god . Obverall pretty well optimized and fun to play. Highly promising

Rogue Comand
¨Rogulike RTS .... strange concept of modern rogeulite progression being tied to TA-like RTS. The way rogulike is implemented is fine , but UI is kinda bad but playys nicely. There is a bit iffyness with controls too . Ocvrall its bit too much of a alpha atm for me to judge it , but will definitely be curious what they will abel to make out of it in the end . Could be good

Laysara: Summit Kingdom
Baically acitybuilder set on a various sides and levels of mountain range. It has a big focus on logistics and population management kinda like Pharaoh , Settlers or Anno , but the setting on mountain range brings interesting unique twist on it (space is limited and you need to take care of transportation between each).
Also the demo has disabled money system ... so felt bit easy. The need to tweak a effect radius of some buidlings a bit as it felt bit too low , but overall highl promising title, especialyl for funs of the more puzzly city builders

another batch done - fun batch aswell :face-savouring-delicious-food:

Bulwark: Falconeer Chronicles

BAsically colony builder in the world of The Falconeer. love the aestetic. The aproach to build things is unique and quite fun . Fun to see different faction in your colonies and how it relates to the commandors and your relation to noc colinies. Technically camera and controls has been bit wonky ,but the devs work hard to improve things on both gamepad and M/K so hopefully it will be fine by the time of release. Highly promising for sure

Captain Wayne - Vacation Desperation

Wild JoJo inspired boomer shooter with shotgun arm in GZDOom engine . The gameplay is wil, it takes the doom as base and it amps up to 100, with lots of creative and crazy movement. Its also quite hard so i died a lot , but really fun when things click. Was quite a big surprise and great play

Cataclismo

Lowpoly colonyfort builder and defense. against monster . The start of demo is basically unit tutorial , a bit too long and annoying ... but the real meat starts when you get to the citadel. You can freely design walls around your base and often very wertically (for example house with oxygen generator on top ... or stacking the walls brick by brick ) . Its a bit clucky at start but you get used to it quickly. Building your own modular base and seeing it grow over is great and enjoyable and pains when the enemies get in . Story seems interesting too . Definitely one to look for , big plus from me

Stop Dead

Chaotic firstperson scoreattack fastpaced action. You run through levels to kill a target and stopping for even a second kills and fails you. So you run around jump around slide around trying to survivr and kill the target by throwing random stuff, enemies or shooting gun at him and then escape. I also really liked how the levels were designed, especially how they allow you to take multiple paths to reach the . The frustration of dying was decreased both due to how fast the game is and just how fun the game is. Plus, dying gave plenty of opportunities to explore the other paths, so I enjoyed that. Overall one of the big surprises and highlight of the barch..

Synth Beasts

This was a weird one, felt like more like a prototype than a demo . its basically a Zelda-ish kind of game where you defeat and then upon some defeats you can synch into that monster and use their skills to continure in stadard Zelda format. It was OK i guess but will need loots of work to be done . Overall has potentiall but too work oin progress atm

Little Kitty Big City

Openworld cat-venture platformer where you go around with your little kitty and try to get back to your roof you fell from. Its cute , but controls felt bit clunky . Personally didnt really jive with this one ... but i guess could be fun for cat fans

Rogue Voltage

Rogulike timeline based rpg where the combat mechanic is wiring up modules and taping the monsters . Quite fun and unique combat . you basically wire together your resources to your moves ... Was fun finally defeating the damn crocodile bosss after so many runs ... definitely promising , but really damn hard

Charles Dickens' "A Christmas Carol" turned into a Metroidvania where freshly reformed Ebeneezer Scrooge takes on London's foul and villainous with the help of the spirits of Christmas!? Yes please.

It's all very cute and funny, thing is though, I didn't like the combat very much.

I didn't understand the controls on that one at all.

Trials meets Mad Max + Furries. The art direction and the concept of a vehicular metroidvania is a winning combination, but the learning curve with the controls is a bit steep and it copies very silly stuff from Trials wholesale like the ability to just flip over your bike while stationary, which then results in a death.

The other major minus: The soundtrack by Beícoli, whose music I already learned to hate when I played The Longest Road on Earth. Just can't stand her Enya-esque mumble-sigh style of singing, but there's always the music volume slider to fix that problem.

Some people may also balk at the crass juxtaposition of extremely gory cartoon violence (the game opens with quite a shocker within the first five minutes) and "cozy" home-base activities like cooking and crafting.

Generic first person horror exploration - good sound ambience, visuals very generic with lots of cheap-looking assets.

Pretty neat idea for a language learning game, you explore environments, look at things and learn how they are spelled and pronounced. The game can record audio from a microphone to verify your pronunciation, too. Fun way to learn proper nouns for people just starting out with a new language.

A third-person mystery exploration game with light action and puzzling set in an environment inspired by 17th century Iceland. The atmosphere is already top notch, the basic gameplay is ok, but nothing special. Will keep an eye on this one.

Skating game with good controls and ugly graphics. I don't get it.

Strange vibes on this one. Single-player Destiny but extra grimdark? Looks and plays very smoothly. Probably going to play.

A perfect summer jam of a game. Cute, bright, a tiny bit of stealth, great soundtrack. 100% buy.

It's cute and relaxed, but not quite enough game for a train builder. Then again, actual train builders tend to have too much game in them for my taste. I think I'm just not made for train games.

Not Scully and Mulder in not Resident Evil. Pretty jank, but also pretty fun. Will keep on wishlist.

The next abstract/strange geometry/perspective-tricks first-person puzzling smash hit. Of course I'm going to play.

And that's my Next Fest done. Until next time! =)

Last batch of impressions:

Born of Bread

A turn base RPG where you play as a boy made of bread, the combat is like the Mario RPG series where pressing the button at the right time you can inflict more damage. The setting is silly and it's colorful so this is a good one to pay attention.

Genopanic

A metroidvania, after finishing the demo it opens a challenge and gives a nice idea of what weapons and abilities you'll get through the game. It may be good.

El Paso, Elsewhere

A mix of Max Payne and the movie From Dusk till Dawn. The demo had 3 levels and going by the bits of the story they seem to take place in the same hotel. It played quite well and the songs were bangers so it's another game to pay close attention.

The Cosmic Wheel Sisterhood

I jumped in without knowing what to expect, and the demo made quite curious about where the game is going. Who could've guessed that creating your own set of tarot cards could be this fun?

Captain Wayne - Vacation Desperation

Another boomer shooter, but I felt it was a bit too fast for me, maybe I was too tired dive into it but for fans of boomer shooter give it try just keep in mind that the game is hard.

Word Factori is chill. It's like a super simplified and forgiving version of a Zachtronics game. You're given one letter (I) and can use various factories to bend, form, and combine it into new shapes and letters. Definitely worth giving a spin if you dig puzzle games like that.

Norland has been a pleasant surprise for me for this Fest.

Widely described as RimWorld meets Crusader Kings, it has a wonderful premise, eye-catching presentation, and attention to detail. I knew the dev team was serious when I saw they were doing nested menu systems for hyperlinks like recent Paradox strat titles.

This one looks super-promising.

second to last batch :face-savouring-delicious-food:

Lords of Exile

Bascially classic NES castlevania clone , but bit more accessible in difficutly ... pixelart is nice and music is great. Castlecania fans will enjoy this one for sure

Passing By - A Tailwind Journey
Cute little adventure where you play as a kiid who received a flying baloon ship to traver around the world . Demo was only limited to 30min so wasnt able to do much beyond the tutorial , but seems to be mostly pouzzling and solding ptoblems of NPCs. Wholesome and fun , could be really cool , if the writing and puzzles stay good . Primising

Delares

Its topdown pixealted game ou play as a merchant traveling the world with animals . You basically try to help people , and crate your own trade realionships with towns and factions aswell as production chains . Basically you can roleplay from simple peaocefull trader through cattle breeder to merecenary figher .. and demo was bit of a tutorial for various of those apporaches
It felt basically as a prototype , and it was felt in controls and a bit of jankyness ... but whats there was really great , highly promising if they manage to create all they set up to create for it 🤞

Word Factori

Zachlike automation factory game where you modifiy letters to make other letters and later combine whole words. Fun concept and pretty much what would you expect from such a genre . Really good even for me who isnt really that much into the genre.

El Paso Elsewhere

Lopoly max payne x blade in shifting mansion. It has this cool edgy nnoir vive and the VO is as melodramatic as one would expect from PS2 era loveletter game. There is only few levels in the demo but the slowmo killing vampires is just great fun . Narration and wiriting seems to be great too. Technically it was a bit clunky and janky . but kinda still above the expaxtation for ps2-style hame . Definitely promising

Stick it to the Stick man

Amazingly fun 2D rstickpeople ogulike brawler about "climbing the corporate" ladder and taking over your boss . GAmeplay is tight , its funny and really enjoyable , lets hope they will also nail the progression of the game. But this is Free Lives and Devolver ... so like certain banger , jsut great

SYKE, got one more.

This demo doesn't seem to have actually been part of Next Fest, just incidentally released at the same time. Found it when I read through the other posts in this thread, and since this game has been on my wishlist since mere seconds after I saw the first trailer, I had to try it.

Loved every minute of it. I'm not much for rock-climbing IRL, but in a video game, where you don't actually have to put up with the sun burning your skin, the wind trying to blow you off the rockface and the mere thought of a cramp potentially ruining your day, I could to it all day long.

And this game is not just a rock-climbing simulation, it's a full-blown mystery exploration game, where you slowly figure out where you are, who the protagonist is, what happened to the place you're exploring, etc.

And unlike your usual exploration game, where the walking around is a mostly thoughtless process, here every step is necessarily deliberate.

Absolutely can't wait for this one.

And another almost final batch :face-savouring-delicious-food: (accidentally noticed few more demos in the "installed locally" section of steam which will be the actuall last batch, probably tomorrow)

Beastieball

Basically pokemon-esque RPG with cute art and combat in form of volleyball match . The story the demo introduced is so perfectly stupid and fun . The biggest issue of the demo is, that its just too short. Highlight of the fest for sure , just great

Born of Bread
Papermario-esque rpg adventure in with silly plotline in silly world where a play as Loaf the boy born of bread. The combat is QTE based .... overall it works similar to the ubisofts South park games. Demo is basically tutorial area so cant wait to see the rest of the game . Great fun and and huge potential.

Gunbrella

Another great metroidvania from devolver. THis time in wildwest-esque postapo setting playing as a dude with shotgun and "gunbrella" which is multipurpose umbrealla to use in the level (works as shiled, dash and floatin). Controls grat on both ?+K/ gamepad. Its super polisher and even the bits of the story were interesting. Incredible demo, one of the highlights

DriveCrazy

Basically the "Missadventures of isekai truck-kun" before isekaing someone . You just race around prebade map and try to survive the sillynes the games throws at you (for example third map makes you drive around the citty and fight skscraper sized brown bear thats destroing the city) . Its really tough to control at first (especialyl the first boring map) , but once you get used to itsit gets great. There is also score attack modes for the scorreattack weridos ...just silly dumb fun!

Ugly

Puzzle adventure with cool mechanic (thing of The Swapper, Braid or Creaks ) of mirroring yourself anf casting and swithcing to your shadow self to progress. Demo got progressively harder but still fun to solveú even the more mindmending puzzles One of the biggest surprises for me in this fest, huge potential

Paquerette Down the Bunburrows

Simpel puzzle game about going down the dungeon and catching escaped bunnies in a twist form of Sokobunny gameplay. Cute , wholesome and fun. The demo even later introduced new mechanics so its bit more than just a sokoban whole way through ... so depending how they will plot this progression out ... i could be really great and unique take on sokoban

and the promised final batch :face-savouring-delicious-food:

Eternights

"We have persona at home "
Budget is small but it has a lot of heart ,the writing is the good amount of fun and ridicouls and the combat is better than i expected . Great potential and overall much better than i expected

Three Kingdoms Zhao Yun

Basically chinese Diablo with cool mounted combat. You are small town boy set out to help his lands general and adventure ensues with you meating important historical people of the era.
The skills in the demo were great and usefull. The setting is fine and looks amating. Only the camera is a bit too close to my liking but fine enough while plaing with gamepad on TV :) The balancing was bit offf (got some gear that made the rest of the demo super easy) but thats probably just demo thing. So yeah its bit buggy and for me the demo even had big launch issue, but the devs were quick to resolve that. So overall great fun

Fregglers

You go around a level with wiggley oranger guy... at first it seems like a standard trial and death rage platformer , but upon beating the initial section and introduces new mechanics its much closer to actual standard 3d paltformer jsut going through set levels . The controls was bit messy , but i guess thats intended given the wibbling. Its really hard ... but with mroe emchanics unlocked its gets better. Has potential

Landnama

Basically 4x survival rogulike strategy about vikings settling in Iceland on hexa tiles. You have a set of “Hearts”. which you can use to explore your surroinding tiles, build something (only 1 building on a tile) or just keep your hearts and prepare for harsh winter. Its super streamliined concept , but ultimately super fun , if bit hard ,
Was really big suprise for me .. recommended

Choo Choo Survivor

Basically standard survivals game but with a train .... has reaaaaaaly slow start . But can be quite fun as ot requires to play slightly differently than usual survivors game thx to being constrained to rails . its ok , but the competition is tough

Sea of Stars

Incredibly fun jRPG in a style of chrono trigger/golden sun with a lighthearted sense of humor. The combat is dope a very fun take on timed hits on a turn based . Spectacular music , the artwork for the world and level design look impeccable! Not to praise too much wasnt really into the part of demo where you had to do the fishing to continue . Really great demo , potential to be masterpiece

Shadow Gambit: The Cursed Crew

Another Mimimi classic , as one would expect from them its ShadowTactics/Desperados kind of gameplay , just set int cursed pirate setting .Looks great, play great and story seems super funny. Simply amazing

I've still got a few I want to try but there were 24 games off my wishlest in this fest with a demo, only 1 I think I'd tried before? Insane. Not going to do all of them but hit quite a few.

Ocelot Sunrise. Big meh from me. It doesn't do anything new for the bullet heaven genre and honestly the demo looks more barebones than the initial release of Vampire Survivors. The style in-game isn't even the most comic-book-esque I don't think, it's missing a bit of something. It feels like "comic book" graphics inspired games remain doomed to mediocrity.

Time Survivors. This is still a little meh but there is some novelty here. The graphics are weird, kinda less pixely Diablo style animation? It's weird but not bad. The whole premise is at least amusing, playing as Abe Lincoln with a flail, crossbow, and fireballs is a thing. It does things a little different by having upgrades outside of runs tied to characters and weapons, I dunno how much that will give it lasting power though.

Deep Rock Galactic: Survivor was probably my favorite bullet heaven of the ones I played. It adds the mining, plus waves sort of like Brotato but more dynamic (the wave ends when you kill the boss and you have to make it to the pod, like the main game). Unless it's crazy expensive I'll likely pick it up.

Fatalzone. This one is a maybe. It has base upgrades and some kind of merc-management, with your characters getting mutations and needing to rest / be healed, and you can upgrade the mercs themselves (I'm assuming if you die in a run the merc is gone, so permadeath in a bullet heaven is novel here). The levels are way more dynamic too, the first extraction is 2 minutes in, then 2 more minutes, then every 5 minutes at default upgrade tier (you can upgrade that to give yourself more waves of 2 minute extracts). Given that the 20-30 minute runs are done to death, this alone may make it worth a shot.

Microcivilization. I legitimately do not know if I liked this or not. The demo is clearly leaving out some systems, and it really comes down to how much those add. For the demo it feels too active for an idle game and too idle for an active game, and got really repetitive because the "best" choices are pretty clear cut.

Draken's Shrine. Apparently inspired by some game, but I played like 3 minutes before quitting. The settings were bugged to where it wouldn't let me use a controller, and the M+KB controls were AWFUL. I'm not sure if the six-point aim is the same with controller but if it is I wouldn't touch it anyway.

Blade of the Netherworld. Something about actiony roguelike Chinese games lately, lots of jank, but kinda fun anyway. I worry it'd be really grindy and repetitive but hard to tell off the demo. Some of the flashy stuff you can do with just your basic moveset is very fun, but the random rooms aren't super interesting (although they rarely are in these kinds of games). I'm gonna keep my eye on it.

Vexlands. This felt like a worse Forager. I played for maybe 30 minutes and was tired of the cycle already - there's more stuff in the game but I'm not convinced you engage with it in a fun way.

Tevi. I ended up disliking ribi-rabi (or however it's spelled) because of the terrible level scaling, but that seems absent here so it's already more promising. You can't drop through platforms for some reason? In a metroidvania? That feels illegal and added some extra backtracking for no reason but maybe final game will be different. The map was pretty terrible. The combat and systems are interesting and look fun though.

Arcane Assembly. Unless I missed something, this is truly the shortest demo I think I've found. BUT, it does introduce you to just enough to pique my interest. I created a rapid-fire orb machine gun spell where each orb had another orb orbiting it. Orb. There have been a few other "program spells" concept games in the past that never went anywhere so if it delivers a full game that's enough for me. Also I am hoping it just doesn't even try to be balanced and you can annihilate your enemies with broken nonsense.

Laika: Aged Through Blood. Jesus, those content warnings at the beginning ARE NOT A JOKE. This game might be too depressing for me and I play lots of walking simulators. It's really hard to get the hang of but it could be fun but yikes. Honestly if the first 3 minutes are the worst of it, I'll probably give the full version a shot.

I'm for sure giving Solium Infernum and The Last Flame a shot, not sure if I'll get to anything else because now I haven't played BG3 in two days because I've been playing demos.

I'm greatly disappointed with the Strategy and RPG offerings in this fest.
Up until now there's always been a lot of stinkers but also a couple of great hidden gems to be found and followed. Feels like every game is either a roguelike deck/dice builders, an asset pack flip with minimal changes or a porn/hentai game.

Off to the Puzzle and Platformer next

Considerably less demos I'm interested in than usual which is a shame

This made me so sad. Combat feels so fucking miserable I couldn't even finish the demo. Lack of staggering on melee attacks plus a lack of invincibility frames when you get hit meant half the time I'd just instantly explode if I tried hitting an enemy upclose, but then if you use anything ranged you just mow through enemies. Maybe it's just me not getting the flow of the game, but I'm feeling more like I'm done with games trying to translate Souls combat into 2D.

Tamagotchi-like hero/rpg game. You basically hatch an egg and raise your hero from birth. Actions take real time (eating, training, quests), so you can set up 5 in a row and close the game and come back later. Quests are automated for the most part, but you can help your character with items and hitting a meter on time. It's tough to say how this game will end up, we'll see as I play some more.

Been sick with a really bad cold so my usual NextFest time has been cut dramatically short, Demos gotta grab my attention quick or I move on and uninstall.

Labrys

Pretty sure this is a small dev team working on what could be a really cool idea, but the demo doesn't really give much indication of what you're meant to do aside from run away from the Minotaur (in single player mode anyway). With a few QOL improvements, I could see it being rather fun co-op game with friends to waste a couple hours.

Motordoom

What if Tony Hawk/Mat Hoffman, but boomer shooter? I figured this would be more like Quarantine or something like that where I'd be progressing through levels on my bike killing demons/monsters. But this more a BMX extreme sports title with shooter and deckbuilding mechanics on top. Might have been me using a mouse and keyboard, but It just didn't gel with me - probably because the idea wasn't what I had hoped for. Not the game's fault, but not my thing.

Darkness Road

Arabic Resident Evil - I am always down for games from underrepresented regions, and this is definitely that. The English VO is a little silly at times, but it controls well, looks okay for a Unity title and I can see it getting okay the further I delve into it. Puzzles were a little hit or miss from what I played, but that might be more my mind being clouded with meds than the game being nonsensical.

Robocop - Rogue City

Teyon outdid themselves and upped the ante from their Terminator game. Buy this.

The Last Flame. PvE autobattler, actually one of the ones I'm most interested in after the demo. It's an autobattler, so if you don't like those you won't like this, but I prefer the team building and single player aspect over PvP so I've avoided all the popular ones.

Solium Infernum. A very board-game-esque strategy game, not a 4x, apparently a remake of an old game with an emphasis on multiplayer. It didn't really grab me, and I have no interest in finding 5 people to try it with to see if the MP is more fun, I'd rather just play an actual board game at that point.

Earthless. This one surprised me a bit, I think I added it to my wishlist just because it was a sci-fi deck builder instead of fantasy deck builder but I quite like the trappings of it - I had fun with the demo. It did feel like it might be less deep than some others but honestly I could deal with a shorter deck experience. I'll definitely try the full version out.

7th Domain. I haven't played much Astlibra yet but this seems like Astlibra at home. The translation is clearly machine generated and a lot of the systems, in my like 30-45 minutes, didn't mean anything. It's labeled as a roguelite but honestly it feels like a roguelite-lite, I think it's basically an action RPG but you respawn in town - I died to a boss, and went back and was able to start right at the boss again. It wasn't boring, but it was just vomitting junk loot at you and without a better translation and giving the systems some meaning I dunno if I'd be compelled to try a longer version of it.

Sorceress. It lists some good stuff as inspiration (including Dark Messiah of M&M which is the most criminally un-sequeled game of all time), but I didn't really feel much of that in the demo. It felt actually very much like Supraland with a bit more systems / combat and less puzzles. I would say it absolutely does not scratch that Dark Messiah itch but it might manifest as its' own thing, I don't think I'd pick it up just off the demo though.

Horticular. I'm not sure what to compare this to, it's like Apico or some farming simulator thing but also there is decay you have to stop with spells and corrupt gnomes attack you sometimes. I played it on the default difficulty and it didn't really feel that "chill", stuff decays pretty quickly once it starts to happen and the invasion thing is just weird. Wondering if it might feel more natural on the easy setting. That said, the game has a serious pacing issue - you run out of money to place stuff way way faster than days go, but at the same time not sure you'd want the day cycle to go faster. It's cute and interesting but it needs some tweaking.

Outpath. I didn't play enough to get to any automation like the game advertises (like 30-40 minutes again), it is very similar to Forager though from what I did play. The problem is, Forager itself overstayed its' welcome and I don't really find any appeal in doing it exactly the same way. I think maybe if you get farther and get automation and actual base building (I wasn't able to place any blocks and getting resources for stuff I could build was pretty slow) it might be nice though. So maybe a sale thing for me.

Last batch I think.

The Awakener. Hmm. Combat is like fast-paced souls like, sorta like DMC but without the safety that brings. It didn't feel that fluid to play, the roguelike systems are there but the choices didn't seem super meaningful. It does that thing a lot of the metacurrency games do where there's an upgrade that increases how much metacurrency you get which is such a dumb design. I dunno, I think it was just too clunky for me, and the minibosses weren't interesting.

Zelter. Not really sure what this is trying to be but I don't think it works. It seems balanced around having a full MP group so I actually could not survive for long enough to see anything besides shoot, reload, shoot, reload, die while reloading. Fake edit: After looking at the discussions it seems like this is a demo for a multiplayer mode for an existing game, Zelter, which has been without updates for 3 years although the developers did respond and say updates are on the way. The game looks interesting on paper so actually kind of hopeful it bears fruit.

Sea of Survivors. This seems OK. It is different enough from other survivors, if you like the top-down quasi-tank control games this is the survivor game for you. I don't really like that style of movement though.

I might be getting demo fatigue, or there just weren't much things I was interested in this time. But out of what I did try, I added them all to my wishlist.

Little Locked Rooms - A very short demo so it doesn't give much info on the quality of the remaining mysteries. Seems cute enough. I hope it can scratch the itch for Layton Brothers: Mystery Room and the investigative bits in Ace Attorney.

Tents and Trees - piqued my interest as a nonogram/minesweeper lover. The demo doesn't show off how difficulty will ramp up, but it looks nice and chill.

The Diary - I like how tactile the little puzzles are. Mystery games live and die by the quality of their writing so I hope the twists aren't too much.

Europa - Gorgeous platformer, giving me Rime vibes. I dunno if there's much to do in the full game though.

Buy Me Some Soup - lol I love fake OS games

American Arcadia - this is just oozing with style. Loving the line delivery of the two characters. The gimmick of an in-game co-op partner sets this apart from other cinematic platformers like Limbo and Inside.

The standout for me was definitely

A few more:
Terminator Dark Fate Defiance - What if World in Conflict was about the war with the machines instead of alt history 1980s? This is that game.
As someone who is a fan of the AoE/C&C style of rts, these don't usually gel with me as much, but it's still fun to blast the various Terminators types in a post apocalyptic wasteland (and I loved WiC, so i'd give this a chance)

Scroomage - This looks like someone's high school notebook drawings comes to life as an ultraviolent fps that only kinda makes sense. You start jobs, which amount to kill everything/destroy things, to earn cash. Recommended as a decent fps, but i can't explain much more.

Street Uni X - See now this is an extreme sports title (one ive been following on itch for like a decade)!. Looks like a 5th gen console game, but plays much better. Unicycles doing stunts, collecting things, with a great soundtrack. Heck yes!

Tried out a handful of demos and I didn't like most of them. I think that might partially be on me for not being in the best frame of mind while playing them but still...

The Last Exterminator - This was the best one I played. It's a boomer shooter with the usual retro look. The weapons are fun to use and it's basically just one level where you're searching for red/green/blue keycards while killing monsters. Only takes about 8 minutes to complete the demo so I'd recommend checking it out if you like the genre.

Pioneers of Pagonia - This is the Settlers like game from the original Settlers devs who left Ubisoft. It looks nice enough. The demo has no tutorial at all so you need to know roughly what to do on your own. My problem with the game was that it was just too slow. I set up build orders for about 8-10 buildings and then I was watching the settlers go about building them and it was just ridiculously slow. Waited several minutes with nothing else going on because they're just slowly going about their work. Couldn't find a way to speed up time so I just got frustrated and quit.

Between Horizons - Pixel art futuristic/sci point-and-click murder mystery adventure game set on a generation ship. From the people who made Lacuna. Right up my alley in every way but the control scheme of the game kills it because there's no pointing and clicking. It's keyboard only for the controls and they are a mess. Even when you figure out and get used to the awkward controls, there's this ingame map that you need to figure out where to go and it is just terrible to understand how to use it. I was wandering around for a few minutes and just got annoyed with the controls and quit.

Sovereign Syndicate - Shameless Disco Elysium clone set in Victorian England. UI and dialogue interface lifted exactly from that game. Unnecessarily verbose dialogs with a bizarre skill check system that rewards you with completely strange rewards for passing those checks. Disco Elysium managed to hook you into the plot in the first few minutes and then slowly expanded and immersed you into Revachol from there. This one seemingly dumps you into the middle of whatever their universe is. It felt like the kind of prose where they use long, complicated words to impress you and I wasn't so I just quit.

Peripeteia - This is supposed to be an immersive sim for 'hardcore' immersive sim enjoyers. In the vein of Eye: Divine Cybermancy from a decade ago. The demo itself is ugly as sin, it tells you nothing about what you're supposed to do and it's just dull as hell to play. I don't know, maybe there's some deeper meaning to it all but I didn't find it fun to play at all.

Sidescrolling puzzle platformer AND first person exploration/puzzle game where two player characters provide support for each other. The mash-up works well and looks great. This is going to be a hit game, certain buy.

Strong Firewatch vibes with this one, but set in the near future (40 years from now) and the demo ends on a scene that suggests some very intriguing mystery to be uncovered. Looks good, great voice-acting, will definitely get and play.

The new game of the developers of Lacuna, and it's a pixelart 2.5D side-scrolling detective adventure again, this time set on a generational space-ship (which looks and feels like a huge space station) and with a metroid-vania-ish game map. The devs are experimenting here with more complex systems compared to their previous game and some of it feels a little awkward and unpolished - and the developers are actively soliciting feedback for the demo in the game's community section, so this release seems to be somewhat of a public alpha test, too. Wishlisted with caution.

Remember the bright. lush, sun-kissed design and art-style of Planet of Lana? This game looks like that, but in 3D. The level design can be quite misleading in videos and screenshots and make you think that this is an open world game like Zelda, but it's really quite a linear 3D platfomer with rather small playing areas - it's just that the level design is often open to all sides and if you try to go out of bounds, a convenient snow storm will show up and blow you right back within the confines of the level. Felt very good to play nonetheless, wishlisted.

First person exploration/puzzle game. Could easily be confused with a horror walking simulator from screenshots, but it's really more of mystery story. Very good-looking. Wishlisted.

Puzzle platformer that can be played in actual coop or in coop-with-yourself, where you control one character with one side of the controller (stick, bumper to jump, trigger for special ability) and one with the other. The level design makes that ambitious concept work beautifully. Fans of unusual puzzle platformers and people looking for coop games should both follow this one closely. Wishlisted.

Ever wanted Limbo or Inside to be a Metroidvania? With a huge map and backtracking and all that goodness? Here it is, and it looks and plays really nicely. The demo is huge, too, I spent 1.5 hours on it. Wishlisted.

A Moomins-themed game that lets you play the Snufkin character in a non-violent action adventure with light puzzling and some stealth, too. Very well made and not just for kids or Moomins fans. For some silly reason the publisher and developer thought it was a good idea to license some 20 years old Sigur Ros music, which as far as I can tell serves no purpose other than getting videos and live-streams of the game muted. Wishlisted.

Has it really been ten years already since The Talos Principle? High time to think about the equivalence of man and machine again - and solve puzzles along the way. The demo actually starts right back in the simulation of the first game and makes you solve 12 classic TTP puzzles as a tutorial. But then you get to experience what the ending of the first game hinted at. The core puzzling gameplay hasn't changed much at all - it's all just a bit bigger and a bit prettier (Croteam implemented this game in Unreal rather than their in-house Serious Sam Engine). Of course I am going to play this.

This game is like Unpacking, but in 3D and you're packing. While you're packing you get to listen to voice-overs of the player character musing about the life they are about to leave behind as they're moving out of their teenage bedroom. One of those wholesome/cozy games that are all the rage now, manages to come across as sincere rather than cringe, which is always nice. Wishlisted.

zomggggggg, it's Dark Souls with a cartoon crab, how epic bacon is this?!?! Well, the camera and controls feel like a lot of not-so-great Unity platformers I've played in my time, and even looking past that I feel this is a perfectly good and cute platformer completely ruined by the silly soulslike angle. Don't these devs realize that people like soulsborne games in no small part because they're dark and bleak? Maybe I'm wrong, but who cares, won't play. Un-wishlisted.

What if The Unfinished Swan with all the charming bits taken out and replaced with cringe? Oof. Un-wishlisted.

Serviceable puzzle platformer for the most part, but very, very slow. Not for me. Un-wishlisted.

Slow-paced walking simulator with light puzzling that looks very good, but the story failed to grip me, seemed too contrived. Un-wishlisted.

What if Twelve Minutes but with pixel-art point and click looks (and a demo that can't be completed). No thanks. Twelve Minutes was annoying enough, but at least it tried something new with the interface.

"Hardcore" (i.e.: Super Meat Boy-inspired) platformer where you play as Sandman! Not bad, but I'm just not enough of a fan of the genre to follow up on this.

Every time I see a flying game where you play as a bird I click the download button and every time it's varying degrees of disappointment. This one is a LARGE degree of disappointment.
