So I don't understand why someone will want to make games private unless they're like hentai and stuff.
I wanted to make a game private for some games just because I was straight up embarrassed by how much time I put into the fucking thing and didn't want other people to see how much time I had either

Before Realm of the Mad God got put onto steam it was a browser game then its own client then it got put onto steam and I played waaaaaaaaaaay to much of that and I just got disgusted by the amount of time i put into that

Just like I stopped doing /played when I still played WOW because that would make me sad

It would be wild as hell if this insomniac hack ends up being the first domino that leads to the industry having a reckoning with how our media is faaar too buddy buddy with the people and companies they cover. I mean we definitely need to have that conversation but I don't think anyone would have expected it to come from this of all things.

To this day I'm still aggravated with gamergate about this. Aside from the obvious awful shit they did that everyone knows about these days, they poisoned the well on discussions about game journalism and the role they play or should play. For years after that anytime you tried to start that discussion up you'd usually get people bringing up snide remarks like "ethics in game journalism amirite" to shut it down since obviously no normal person wants to be linked to a hate group.

But we absolutely needed to have this conversation 10 years ago. I first started noticing widespread issues with our industry's media during the GTA IV review period where they all got flown to a location and had to play it while rockstar employees paced around the room watching over them like hawks and then they all came back and gushed over it. It wasn't that they gave it 10s that was my issue, it was like it became a competition among journalists on who could 1-up the last person with more hyperbolic praise of it. Any recent game you think the media may have done this with like maybe BOTW I can assure you it was far more embarrassing and unprofessional with GTA IV. Then there's also the issue where our media is basically treated like an entry level game dev job with how many people springboard to it. I'm not aware of any other industry where this happens nearly as often as ours.
Once upon a time I wrote about how NeoGAF was a better source of news than game journalists, among other observations about the poor quality of game journos.

Stephanie Sterling publicly chewed me out on Twitter and another person on the site I wrote for wrote a series of game journalism ass-kissing articles on the back of mine (basically saying none of what I wrote was true, and that game journalism was not a corporate deepthroating exercise) to give his career a boost.

Other game journalists mocked me on social media and sicced future gamergate types onto me because they were all wanking in the same circle jerk at that time.

Sterling is now famously ostracised, relying on Patreon and ranting on YouTube about many things I was saying back in the day. While the other brown noser is no longer a game journalist - he sold himself out to a B2B tech site, writing articles aimed at C-suite cunts.

Hypocrites. The whole fuckin’ lot of them.

Ugh I remember how sterling was in those destructoid days back then they were probably one of the worst game journalists around. To their credit they've grown up a bit since then but they were definitely part of the problem..

I've thought about why our industry has such a problem in the media and I used to think it was because you don't need any kind of journalism education (or really advanced education in general) to work for most of these companies but you could likely say the same for movie bloggers and reviewers and to my knowledge they don't have the same issue gaming has. I won't claim to know how to fix it either but I think the first step is people banding together and not letting the devs and media team up to block criticism online like how they've always done. We can't keep letting them use the gamergate thing or claims of harassment in general any time people try to speak up about these issues.

That's the answer to the question 'why is Geoff Keighley so obsessed with Hollywood and ads'. Because the state of the industry is so shit, the only path forward is to suck corporate dick.

Talking about game journalism... I remember the old days when I was young, and when everyone marginally related to the industry knew one thing: if you used an N-Gage you were a game journalist.
Because they gave those away and people used them as phones (on the side of course because design was :blobxorcism:) at the time.

Which is why I find it very funny that they claim that they were never corpo bots, I remember the E3&such after hours with the devs and publishers, with the little "gifts", the alcohol, the booth babes and the very legal drugs.
And it's still incredibly common, but don't worry, guaranteed impartiality from the people that took some coke with the marketing team of the Big Threes last summer.

Google can get fucked. I’m getting closer to the day where I never need to use their products again.

At this point, YouTube on my TV and… well… that’s it now. Even my Gmail forwards to my Proton email and any time something comes from Gmail it gets tagged and I either unsubscribe or update my email address with whoever sent it.

Once more, Google can get fucked.

More and more I have to add reddit at the end of my google searches to get the info I wanted. Otherwise it's just ai articles everywhere.
Yesterday I was looking up something I thought would be relatively simple: I was looking up the age of the Old guy (He was named Roberts Blossom) with the shovels age when he was in the Home Alone movie (he was 66 when he played that character in Home alone) and all of my results kept coming back for when he died in 2011 and how old he was then. Surprise surprise I found out his age by going to a comment section in reddit lol

I only originally started caring about it because I saw a joke picture saying "Guess what this guy was probably 30 or something when he made this movie, FEEL OLD NOW?"

I never took gaming journalism seriously, most of them are glorified bloggers who are good at only one thing : gaming the algorithms to get their diarrhea in front of as many eyes as possible.

I'm old, and I had to look up "N-Gage". Interesting. Anyway, when I think about entertainment "journalists", the only one I can think of who was consistenly worth reading was the late Roger Ebert, as someone who was actually capable of analyzing, deconstructing, and putting the work into context. Something more than "it's good", "it reminds me of this game", "it's too woke/not woke enough" or whatever else passes as criticism and discussion these days. When it's getting harder and harder to even find hard news journalism, it's not surprising that game "journalists" are total shit.

When it comes to reviews, I don't even believe bloggers or youtubers anymore. They're all shills. Steam reviews at least Very Positive or I'll keep my pennies.

The NGage is fantastic in the sense that someone thought it was a good idea to force people to remove the battery in order to switch games. Imagine you had to reset your fusebox everytime you wanted to switch PS2 games.

Are hidden games a -1 to your game count?
Not that I would ever hide my dozen of Sakura games or whatever else porno games I own.

Plenty of interesting posts yesterday, my friends, I’m a little sad to read those after the fact, even if I may not have had things to contribute. Journos as glorified PR, getting google out of your digital life, everything was interesting.

Anyone had the issue when using store
Credit on Xbox store that even when using store credit and paying rest with bank card it tried to take the full amount on the bank card? I remember I had the same issue before and can’t remember how I fixed that.

edit: worked when I used Paypal instead.

Resident Evil 4 remake bought! Used last of my microsoft reward points. Now done with it, they destroyed it too much. It was nice while it lasted. Lots of free cash!

I revised my commitment to finish games by the end of the year. I won't go for Black Ops 3 and FF VII Remake, I will just finish BO3. And play FFVII, GTAV/RDR2 occasionally. After I finish FFVII next year I will probably tackle Phantom Liberty on PC and find something smaller on Deck. Then after Starfield gets few more patches go back to that. I want to play Dead Space Remake but I kinda can't justify it when I have gems like Plague Tale 2 to play.

I REALLY need to make up my mind about a mechanical keyboard for the PC and a mouse for the Deck.
But I kinda want to splurge in the sale, again.
Decisions, decisions.
