The development team experimented with a more vibrant color palette and shifted away from using pixel art in the backgrounds, giving the game a distinct look within the HD-2D lineup. “We utilized color palettes that felt authentic to Dragon Quest,” Hayasaka said, emphasizing the importance of staying true to the original’s essence while innovating.
Hayasaka believes that future HD-2D titles will continue to push the boundaries of what’s possible within the style. Each new game has the potential to introduce unique elements that enhance both gameplay and visual storytelling. “These innovations will continue to push the boundaries of HD-2D expression in the future,” he stated.

I'm totally getting Dragon Quest 3. Already took the day off of work for it. I needs it.

That's some good news.

Fingers crossed, their regional pricing also returns to their roots (SEGA put some awful pricing on their ganes)

Might finally pick up Midnight Suns. I have some store credit from trading cards so I'll only be paying around 5€. I really liked the combat in the demo but I didn't buy it back then because I feel that the life sim aspect will get on my nerves.
I'm close to wrapping up the Shining Force 3 trilogy so I'm gonna need another tactical rpg fix.
Durante and his team at PH3 have just released a major update to Phantom Brave on PC. Check the writeup here:

Yet another game I need to get around to...

For released games that make frequent updates, these tools can give players more clear choices in how they want to engage with the game. Some players want to be part of your beta branch where you are testing out the latest updates, while others may want to play on an older stable build that they know works well with their save file.

New version support:
Many games on Steam already have multiple build branches available to players; different builds of the game, either historical versions or forward-facing test builds with the latest pending updates. Previously, accessing these alternative build branches has been fairly obscure, done by players through the Steam 'settings' panel for a game. However, new Steamworks APIs now allow developers to offer players this choice from within the game itself.

(Played in PS4) RDR1 world and timeline is pretty much the end of "wild west" + Redemption arc, so it is a bleaker game.
Also it came in 2010, and reading its troubled dev history, I'm surprised it even released at all. Not really fair to compare it to a full blown 2018 release.

Oh for sure. I wasn't comparing them, just appreciating how far the series has gone in those years. Great to be able to play RDR on PC. I hope they get round to doing RDR3, maybe as a prequal to 2, young Dutch and Hosea.

Oh, thank the Hours. This isn't the kind of game where you need a stable framerate, but on a Steam Deck it'd often be below 20 FPS most of the time. A performance patch is extremely appreciated.

I am gonna give RDR2 another go since I am on downtime. Any settings I should change/enable? I will be using controller and KBM but I turned on When aiming on horse to have camera relative to horse.

Any other gameplay tweaks or such?

I use a controller and found that the button config that has RB as the run button to be best as it is a bit less fiddley when tapping it to sprint and look around unlike using the A button.

Going to check out that fast walk mod and the temperature mod mentioned in that vid PC-tan , Cheers!

Would mods disable achievements for RDR2? This is technically my first playthrough.

I just want fast walk and maybe sell guns.

This looks like a cool IF game.

The dedication to the aesthetic is impressive.

Encounter is doing the exact opposite of that: It is a real 8bit game for the 1984 Oric Atmos personal computer running on a 1mhz 6502 processor with 64 kilobytes of ram, loaded from a 360 kilobytes 3" floppy disk.

Note: This Steam version of the game allows you to play on PC thanks to an Oric emulator called Oricutron, you can find the actual game in the install folder

The dev's blog post on the port is an interesting read too!

I wonder if anyone else here is trying out Linux. It seems to be hitting an upswing, I've seen more videos and threads on Era coming out about gaming on Linux.
Hmm, since I came to the conclusion that I don't care for Ray Tracing I realized my next GPU could be AMD for the sweet VRAM.
The logical follow up would be using linux, then.

Still very theoretical, but the seed is there.

Next gen of AMD GPUs is supposedly gonna have notable improvements when it comes to ray tracing and support for hardware AI upscaling (I'm guessing something comparable to PS5 Pro's PSSR?).

Midnight Suns is a great game. It's a shame it was almost ignored.
I'm pleased with how great it looks on the Deck. At 30fps, which is fine for a turn based game, you can have most settings on high or epic, except for the more demanding stuff like shadows and volumetric fog.

Midnight Suns has some cool mods available that allow you to do some cool stuff for a custom New Game+. Don't know how modding on Linux works though so...

I plan to eventually do a new game+ with extra fielded heroes, more drawn cards, and larger hand size, but also with enemy health and behavior upgraded for a fun clusterfuck run. I made my install unstable by overmodding it, but that's future me's problem.

There's also mods that make Deadpool not terrible, and makes Ms Marvel better (who starts out solid, but is quickly outclassed). There's mods for cutting down on the social side of the game's tedium too.

Haven't really messed with mods on the Deck yet.
