Second-hand Rift CV1 / Vive might actually not be bad if you find a decent price for it. Both have drawbacks though: CV1 needs 3 trackers connected to high-speed USB ports, and the Vive controller diverges quite significantly from everything else now out there.
kinda itching ti get used Vive , found really good price ( +- 250€) and iirc for controller Vive also supports knucles from Index, but still kinda not sure if i should go for it , as curently i am in bit of a pickle with money and time , but if i wait much more it will be even less of a possibility

That’s a pretty great deal. I’d grab it if I were you.
I wish I could use the knuckles on my Rift 😭

Man, that poor user on Era who decided to start a "Valve makes no games" thread literally hours before they announced a new Half-Life game. Talk about bad timing.
I looked into it wondering how I never saw that. Turns out I had OP on ignore. Figures. Being fast and loose with the ignore button is the only way I can bear PC-related talk over there.

I have nobody on ignore over here, for what it’s worth. It’s nice that people can generally be civil with each other, even when disagreeing.

I made a post here about things people looking into buying a VR headset in the future should know about that will maketheir buying experience better, this is coming from a consumer who bought a headset in january (Rift) after using a lot of time to research cons and pros with all headsets.

Some general tips for you and others:

It had some software issues at launch, but from my observations it's should be mostly fixed now.

The biggest cons with the Rift S is no hardware IPD, but a software one. Hardware IPD basically means that you can physically get the lenses closer to your eyes to make what you see less blurry, but it has a software one which is not as good. You should try and find out what your IPD is and Google if it will work with the Rift S. The VIVE, OG Rift (I own this), Vive Pro, Index and Quest has hardware IPD, Rift S does not.

Another con is that the implemented sound on the Rift S is not good, but pretty much anyone just uses headphones with it.

This is Rift S software IPD:

The slide left on the Index in this pic is the Index's hardware IPD:

Here is the Hardware IPD on the OG Rift (the sldie on the corner below):

Also, if you get a Oculus headset (Quest, OG Rift, Rift S), Oculus requires you to have the Oculus Client open when you use SteamVR, not a big of a deal at all , but it would be nice if you could remove it when usign SteamVR. Have tried some "hacks", but none of them worked.

Also, the Index, Vive and Vive Pro requires base stations to operate that you setup in the corners of your room. If you find an OG Rift, you will pretty much need to get a 3rd sensor (can be bought on Oculus.com/rift, the Rift comes with 2 sensors) that you need to setup in your room. Sensors requires to be connected to PC via USB (2 sensors use USB 3, 1 sensor can use USB 2 if you have 3 sensors like me). Base stations does not use USB connection to your PC, they only require you to connect them to a socket.

Quest, Rift S and the new Vive Cosmos (stay away from this, the game support and tracking is pretty crap, but HTC says they are trying to update the trackign with updates) does not require any sensors or base stations as they use cameras to track your headset and controllers.

A Steam-friend refunded SM3 but still received an EGS key. Check your account, I guess?
Thanks for the heads-up.

I don't have a code for the game (I just have an EGS key for the demo, which was already available before I received a refund), but I now have download links for some of the rewards (soundtrack, artbook, wallpapers).

We're nine days way from the United States Turkey Day. I happen to be lucky enough to have five days off in a row! First off, fuck black Friday! Second, don't visit your family if its going to destroy you for days/weeks afterwards! Three, play video games!

I think Imma make a thread in honor of the turkday next week.

That thread is a complete shit show. It's incredible how console-only gamers consider Valve a "bad" platform owner because they don't make the games they want, and/or because they don't behave and communicate like console manufacturers. In almost every pc-gaming related thread on Era, this seems to be the reason for another round of "lazy Valve" shit posting.

Maaaan I took a quick look at Twitter and that other forum and I got in like 5 minutes 9999 times the drama I got here since I joined. I'm not used to that stuff anymore.

You're spoiling me.
Metacouncil is very relaxing.
Honestly, I'm pretty sure an important part of it is just not being too big. People don't come here to astroturf because there's no reason to.

The "Are your PC ready for Valve Index" Steam app is in Norwegian. The Valve Index infosite (Valve Index – En oppgradert opplevelse - Valve Corporation) is in Norwegian. The Valve Index Steam overview page (Valve Index) is in Norwegian.

Yet "Not available in your country". :(

I have a Rift, so I can still play it, but I would rather play it on an Index. I have the money for it, but Valve doesn't wanna sell it to me. :(

I'm so glad I decided to skip Atelier Ryza.
I expected their DLC "policy" to be borderline insulting, and as expected:

And I'm sure more will follow.
Do note that not everything are costumes/skins, there's story content in there.

KOEI TECMO pricing and DLCs clearly are not for me.

I know some people are fine with it, but I find unreasonable the amounts they ask for, in order to get the "full package".
Unreasonable, and frankly, unaffordable for someone who lives in a country whose minimum wage is 600€, like me.

I was surprised to see that for me in Canada as well. Apparently my aging rig is index ready, but I can't imagine it'd be a good time even if it is 'ready'

At least on my end, the pricing on individual items is way more reasonable. Yeah I could pay 99 BRL for the entire season pass... or I could get the story stuff for like 20 since I don't really give a shit about skins.

The Index is not yet available in Canada, Australia, Norway (all countries in Europe who are not a member of the European Union), New Zealand (I think), Russia, the middle east (I think) and I read some months ago about 1-2 states it's not available in either, but not sure about that.

Valve better fix this. Availability is more needed than the price being lowered imo. I mean, what's the point of lowering the price if most people still can't buy it?

So... I'll need to start saving for a VR set, won't I? :dizzy-face:
Well due to the price difference you should try to find out which of the headsets you wanna get: Vive, Vive Pro, Rift S, Quest, Windows Mixed Reality headset (many to choose from) or Index.

Honestly, I don't see the point with the Vive Pro if you can buy the Index.

Looool. With that money, I could buy Cyberpunk and still have some change to buy an indie game or two.

Here's my view:
  • WMR is cheap, pretty great screens for the price (especially on Samsung!), but mediocre tracking.
  • Rift S is decent if you have an "average" IPD. Unexciting but decently competent in all aspects.
  • Oculus Quest with link hasn't been out there long enough to get a good idea. In theory, if the link works well with 5m cables, it should be a good alternative and a good deal if you also get use out of the portability feature.
  • Second-hand Rift CV1 / Vive might actually not be bad if you find a decent price for it. Both have drawbacks though: CV1 needs 3 trackers connected to high-speed USB ports, and the Vive controller diverges quite significantly from everything else now out there.
  • Index is, well, the best at almost everything (except display contrast compared to OLED HMDs), and sadly very expensive.
  • Everything else (like primarily Pimax) is even more expensive and more for enthusiasts/tinkerers.
Since HL:A won't be out for a few months anyway, might as well wait for more Quest link impressions for now.
I made a post here about things people looking into buying a VR headset in the future should know about that will maketheir buying experience better, this is coming from a consumer who bought a headset in january (Rift) after using a lot of time to research cons and pros with all headsets.

That's excellent, thanks a lot guys.

On first impressions, providing Quest with Link works well, and that I'm not losing anything by not using a "dedicated PC" headset, I'd go with that.

I hope HLVR doesn't require a full room set up though cos I've just not got that space 😕

I’d kill for a day off. I just want to beat Star Wars.
Starting with your boss would be a good start.

So anyone found a way to disable 'what's new'? Large library icons are too big, medium too small, an option to customize size is asking too much I guess especially considering it was there before.

Plans for a Quest may already be dead.
Doesn't support GTX 970 (yet?) and requires USB C to USB C cable but I've no USB C ports 😅
So hopefully an adapter works there too 😕

If I didn't hate Facebook as much as I do, all the Oculus port requirements would be enough. Not the quest, but the other headsets ask for too much.

I went with WMR (Odyssey+) and it's been pretty happy for the most part. One USB 3 plug, and one HDMI. I just wish Microsoft would continue pushing the platform forward. It would be an easy slam dunk for the next Xbox.

Started playing Bioshock for the first time since release and it is still amazing! Forgot how good the environmental story telling is. The bad news is it crashed and deleted my last hour of play last night. Upon googling it turns out you cannot play for more than an hour at a time or it will delete all your progress during that play session? I am scared.

What other Oculus headsets ask too much? The S only needs one displayport and one USB 3.0 port. It's the original Rift (no longer sold directly by Oculus, only whatever stock is left in stores) that asked a port for each of the 2 or 3 external trackers but it's not like such an external tracking system could function on less.

Plans for a Quest may already be dead.

The currently recommended testing cable is actually a $13 USB C (I imagine this end connects to the Quest?) to USB 3 (on PC end?).

Where are you guys getting your info from?

sorry, I think I misread the requirements for the S.

Are you playing the original version or the remastered? It sounds weird if that happens with the newer version

Newer version, this sounds like an issue with the remastered version. I am hoping if I just play 45 minutes and close the application and then open it again and continue that will reset the crash/save issue time period :steam_pig_crylaughing:

I'd heard they were making an "official" cable that's USB C at both ends, plus it's $80!

I remember having a ton of crash/audio issues with the original Bioshock port. Both of the versions are a shitshow and the remastered version of the 2nd game is probably worst offender. It crashed so much for me I just quit the game 90 minutes in.

Have you tried disabling Steam Overlay? Running it as admin?

Another thing it seemed to work for some people is add the -dx9 parameter before launching the game.
