AI: THE SOMNIUM FILES

AI: The Sominum Files will launch worldwide for PlayStation 4, Switch, and PC via Steam on July 25, publisher and developer Spike Chunsoft announced.

The mind never lies…

In a near-future Tokyo, detective Kaname Date is on the case of a mysterious serial killer. Date must investigate crime scenes as well as dreams on the hunt for clues. From the mind of Kotaro Uchikoshi (Zero Escape series director), with character design by the Yusuke Kozaki (No More Heroes, Fire Emblem series), a thrilling neonoir detective adventure is about to unfold.

Story

One rainy night in November, a woman’s body is found at an abandoned theme park, mounted on a merry-go-round horse. She had been stabbed repeatedly, and her left eye was gouged out.

Kaname Date of the Metropolitan Police Department arrives on the scene. He recognizes the woman. Suddenly, he hears a noise from inside the merry-go-round.

He breaks into the merry-go-round’s central column to find a young girl. And in her hands, she grips a bloody ice pick…

Setting
  • Set in a near-future Tokyo.
  • Real-world settings and science fiction elements.
  • Travel between dreams and reality to investigate crimes.
■ Gameplay

There are two types of gameplay: Somnium and Investigation. The plot unfolds as the player moves between the Investigation and Somnium gameplay modes. Investigation mode takes place in the real world, where you play as detective Kaname Date on the case of a potential serial killer.

As Date, you collect information by listening to testimonies and examining crime scenes. The story advances by visiting various locations and gathering clues. Gaining as much information as possible is rewarded: even if it seems unrelated, it may prove useful in the future.

In addition to simply speaking with people and inspecting objects at the scene, there are three unique gameplay elements you will encounter:

  • Special Vision Modes– Date’s left eye, the AI-Ball known as Aiba, has the ability to examine the environment further. Use three special vision modes to gain information you can’t see with the naked eye!
    • Zoom – Examine objects up-close for a better look.
    • Thermo – View a thermograph of an object.
    • X-ray – Use electromagnetic radiation to see inside of objects and reveal hidden clues.
  • Interrogation – Question suspects or persons of interest for more information. Here, you can corroborate crime scene evidence with witness testimony to gain leads.
  • Quick Time Events – Detective work is dangerous! Quickly input the correct commands to escape life-or-death situations. If you fail, it’s game over!

The trailer somehow reminds me of Deadman Wonderland, though I obviously don't know if they actually have anything in common.

I'm pretty sure this will be a day-one game for me simply because of who the writer is and also so that I don't have to have to dodge spoilers.

Always have time to play an Uchikoshi game. I just have to decide if I want to import a physical Switch copy of this from VG+ or buy it on Steam.

I thought 2019 would be a cheap year for me, and in some ways despite their lots of cool-looking stuff coming out, it is. But there's always those few games that catch my eye.

The latest YouTube video for A-set, an Internet idol who also appears as a character in Spike Chunsoft’s upcoming detective adventure game AI: The Somnium Files, has posted a new video featuring the first gameplay footage of the title.

The cast seems actually good, even if still panders a bit too much to Japanese Otaku culture (the idol and the "obsesseded fan" who seems to be framed as her justified protector :blobvomiting:), but I guess without that it wouldn't get any funding over there.

Waiting to hear from some other reviewer friends how the game is. If it's good, I'll have to decide whether to get it early for Switch (I have a local game store that breaks street date) or to get it for PC. Probably gonna go for Switch to avoid spoilers, honestly.

Ok ok. I'll pay your 54 effing €s for the game. Sheesh that's pricey.

Oof. Pricey indeed. I'll have to wait a little until I get this. Glad to hear it's good though. Can't wait to play it.

They wanted £45 for it here in the UK. I usually expect games like this to max out at £40, so they're definitely pushing the boundaries of what I'm willing to pay, but there are some creators that I will pay a premium for. Uchikoshi is one of them.

That's a high price for a VN to ask, I'll wait until I hear something from peeps on Meta who are already playing it

This seems so pricey.

A) I've heard some of the content is shocking. What are we talking from Uchikoshi here? Shocking gore, scenarios, twists, what?

B) How long is the damn thing?

I put 4 hours into it so far and like it. It's less puzzle-heavy than 999 etc., but has a lot more interactive gameplay elements than pure VNs.
Can't say too much about the story yet, but it's interesting at least, with some good characters.

Finished this earlier today. I expected to go on an insane ride and wasn't disappointed. I can't get the music out of my head.

Wishlisted the game but want to make sure, no previous knowledge of Uchikoshis earlier games is required, right?

There are a few jokey references to previous Uchikoshi games, but nothing other than a throwaway line.

Finished it yesterday and... it's great! There's some dumb moments to it, especially in the shootouts, but overall I think the game tows a very fine line between a murder mystery and a lighthearted animu game, and gets it right.

I was always going to get this, but I'm surprised at how much I enjoyed the game. The writing is top notch, with the high point funny moments hitting the mark most of the time, but then quickly switching to heartbreak when talking to another character about their troubles. I think the mostly excellent voice acting, in addition to the writing and good translation, helps deliver these emotional gut punches.

So props to everyone involved. Not quite my GOTY, but it's going to be much higher up my end of year list than I thought it would be.

The amount of japanese puns in this is silly (and amazing).
Luckily quite a few are dumb enough that I understand them.

He~~~ sou nanda.

Also, I've reached 2 endings and still have very little idea what's actually going on. Classic Uchikoshi.
