Community Backlog Blitz Season 15 - Runs April 1 through June 30 with a raffle at the end

We just finished a successful fourteenth season of the Backlog Blitz. Having made it past our fourteenth season it means that Dallas, Bonanza, and Knots Landing (if you're into older TV shows) didn't last as long as we have and with this season we're catching up to Spongebob Squarepants and one of those NCIS shows as well. We had 19 participants with 92 game goals set and 51 of them were completed. Congrats on clearing out those backlogs! The rate of completion went up a tiny bit after the big fall last season, possibly due to slightly fewer total games set as goals or those New Year's resolutions kicked into gear but now a bunch of big 2023 games have released we'll see who sticks to their backlog. C-Dub was the big winner this time winning the raffle for completing Dead Space (2023). Make sure to congratulate them here or in the previous thread!

We're into the second quarter of 2023. This year has started off with quite a few larger releases, as well as some high-scoring indies, so there's been a lot for people to buy, possibly play, and likely build up a backlog. Don't I know it. Try not to get too distracted as there will continue to be more hitting and I predict June will be rough with Diablo, Final Fantasy, and the start of all the gaming events to excite everyone for new games instead of backlogs.

The spreadsheet has been updated, the prize pool has been reset. We'll start with $20.00 but chipping in is always welcome. The details to do so will be posted separately within the thread soon after we get started.

Pick your games accordingly!

What it is:

It's a simple way to clear out some backlog games. You select a number of specific games you want to complete and if you complete them in a set time frame you have a chance to pick a game of your choice within the prize limits.

Rules:

First off, there is no time limit on when you can join. If you come in late and only have a month left please feel free to join. Even one completed game will get you entered into the raffle detailed below.

Everyone shares the same rules so an agreed amount of time would be set (three months this time) and then a set amount of games you want to complete in that time (been using five games). You then pick your specific five games with the intention that you don't go changing it all the time. The idea isn't that once you beat some game you go and list it and mark it complete. Instead, you pick five games to complete at the start of the Blitz and ideally you complete them as well as anything else you want to finish in that time.

Prize:

In the end, I suggest a prize pool and a simple raffle done. I always chip in $20 to start it and accept any other additions. Raffle winners must use at least half but can go up to the full price of a game (capped at $60 if the prize pool gets large enough). Leftover goes to the next drawn winner until it gets down to $0 (or close enough at which point I'll just add it to the next Blitz).

Thoughts?

There's no entry fee or anything so there's really no loss for taking part or starting it and then ignoring it. It's just a fun way to clear out backlog games and have discussion about what you're completing. And commiserate if you pick a game you don't enjoy and sour one of your spots on your list.

I created the Google Sheet so feel free to add yourself and games:

Little Nemo: The Dream Master (NES)
Atelier Ryza: Ever Darkness & the Secret Hideout
The Last Campfire
God of War (2018)
Eternal Threads

These are my games. Some notes.
Nemo is one of those games I rented way back when but never finished for one reason or another, possibly ran out of rent time, but I can't quite recall for sure. And with the two new Nemo games coming from two different devs, it's been kind of on my mind lately and it's kind of bugging me that I didn't finish it.
Ryza, it's the first one of the Atelier Ryza trilogy. I've played Sophie and Firis from the previous one, but never bought the third one, part of it was because they stopped doing dubs, and then when I played Nelke and heard the Japanese VO's for the two alchemists, I think I made the right decision. Anyways, Ryza is the beginning of a new trilogy and I'll likely play all 3 of them eventually.
The Last Campfire, I liked the demo. Nothing much else to say here.
God of War, this is the new one. I guess I should watch some quick recap of the old games to refresh my memory and also because I only played the first one of those back in the day.
Eternal Threads, don't really know much about it. Looks interesting, has good rating on Steam. Per store page, it's a "first-person story-driven puzzle game of time manipulation, choice and consequence".

I chose Ctrl Alt Ego as my Blitz prize. I’ll be playing it in this Blitz!

My 5 this time are:

1. Resident Evil 4 (2023)
2. PARANORMASIGHT: The Seven Mysteries of Honjo
3. Metroid Prime Remastered
4. Ctrl Alt Ego
5. Synergia

I’ll add them to the spreadsheet soon. Will probably get started once I finish Octopath Traveler II.

Also sent you £6 for this Blitz, Wibblewozzer!

Thanks, just got it added. After conversion that came to $7.10 USD and there was $5.01 left over from the past Blitz so with those together this Blitz is starting at $32.11 for the prize pool. Nice!

My five games this time (pending any changes I may make):

  • Blaster Master Zero
  • BlazBlue: Continuum Shift
  • BlazBlue: Chrono Phantasma
  • Dangaronpa 2: Goodbye Despair
  • Rising Hell
Something about having two games in the same series listed kind of bothers me for my list but I also really want to make more progress through the series so I'll probably leave it.

Lets keep on trucking :longswordblob:

  1. Toodee and Topdee
  2. Everspace 2
  3. Tenderfoot Tactics The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos
  4. Penko Park
  5. Prodigal

I chose Ctrl Alt Ego as my Blitz prize. I’ll be playing it in this Blitz!
Quite interested to hear your thoughts on this later. The general reception seems to be really positive and god knows there aren't a lot of immersive sims to sink our teeth into, so any good one is always welcome.

Up for any feedback from anyone here but just trying to make it a bit easier knowing which color to set for the status stuff so I wanted to see about making a simple selector. It's available on the "Test" tab to the right of the first tab with the current Blitz if you want to try it out. I could probably do more to make it visually stand out but there's a new cell to the left of the first game's main cell that you double-click to get the available options and selecting one changes the cell color.

I went ahead and put a simple border around the box you double-click to help draw attention to it for testing purposes. I'd probably format the look of it a little differently otherwise.

Another update: To make color selection easier overall I tweaked the colors so they are now all listed in the "Custom Color" section in the color selection panel. Just use the red, blue, and green colors there.

Only managed to complete 3 games last Blitz.

Anyway, games for this season are:

1) - Resident Evil 4 Remake (Currently on Chapter 13, but I also plan to do a second playthrough).
2) - Jedi Survivor
3) - Lost Judgment (Carried over from last Blitz. Currently 18 hrs in.)
4) - Valkyrie Elysium
5) - Warhammer 40K: Boltgun

Another update: To make color selection easier overall I tweaked the colors so they are now all listed in the "Custom Color" section in the color selection panel. Just use the red, blue, and green colors there.
Thank you for the custom colour picker! Now I don't have to remember whether it was Cornflower blue 2 or 3, etc. :p

I'm still toying with possible alternative methods that remove the need to use the cell background color thing. Really just comes down to what's easier without making things more cluttered or confusing to use.

Instead of a double click, would it make sense to change the display to an arrow, to make it stand out more as something you can click? I imagine that might be visually the most familiar 'you can click here to open a dropdown' concept for a lot of people.

This was updated on the Test tab for anyone else that wants to also check it out. I built out a second row just so I could look into how things would look if it was added to all game columns. I kind of like how it works but still not sure if or when I'd implement it for the main tab.

Going to drop "Catherine Classic". Pretty interesting visually, but the stress of getting puzzle done is a big turn off for me...

Anyhow for my first game for this blitz season it will be

I suppose I'll join. My health has been rough this year which has made me not really want to play much but I'm trying to slowly get back into things. I've been doing the FF pixel remasters lately so I'll put the last few on this.

FFV
FFVI
Resident Evil 4 (been putting this off til I felt better)
Zelda Skyward Sword HD
Gotham Knights

Doubt I'll be able to finish all these but it's something to aim for at least.

Eternal Threads done.
Kind of underwhelming in the end. I was hoping that the investigative aspect of the game would have been more involved, like, finding things in the house or through watching other events that would allow you nudge events in certain directions and such, but no such luck. Only thing you need is your magical time device that allows you to make choices. In a few instances you can see in the timeline that an event that happens here can actually be a choice, and making different choices in the past can unlock that choice for you, which is kind of neat. But that's exactly the kind of thing I would have hoped to have more, and the discovery of choices being unlocked by finding out things in the environment or by observing events, instead of altering a choice in the past.
There are a few spots where you need to observe someone do something, hide a key or whatever so you can then find it, but those are few and far between and your helpful radio sidekick is sure to mention it so it's impossible to miss.

The story is a bit whatever. Most of it is very mundane slice of life stuff, not really interesting to me at all. There are a couple of potentially interesting threads that are revealed early on, but one of them ends up being a bit of a dud, and the other is kind of left hanging. You discover that one of the tenants senses glimpses of the future somehow, and also somehow manages to capture something of the future with an old school camera... and then that's that. Two of the tenants develop some pictures, your sidekick says some shit, and it's never mentioned again. You discover some more temporal stuff too like an older magical time device similar to yours, which points to a previous tenant being a traveler too, but it doesn't really tie together in any meaningful way, other then 'weird time travel shit'. It's really unsatisfying.
And the ending is a massive sequel bait cliffhanger, and I'm not really optimistic about a sequel at all.

The Surge. I liked it better than Dark Souls 3. I think I even like it better than Nioh. The only drawback I can think of right now is that the level design relies too much on service passages that all look the same. Play it, there is souls life beyond From.

1/5 for this season.

Game #1 complete. Rising Hell is part of my Rogue-lite category of goal games and I picked it for this Blitz because I saw completion time seemed to be shorter, typically 2-6ish hours depending on the player. I ended up finishing it on my second attempt in just over an hour. It's overall quite easy which makes the slow progression to unlock things a bit amusing since usually you work on unlocking stuff by doing a bunch of attempts. I toyed with the alternate challenge mode, did a partial extra run to earn the permanent currency to unlock the middle locked character, but ultimately I feel pretty content to just move on since there's nothing else added other than higher difficulties that unlock and I don't care enough about that.

I was needing this anyhow since I've been playing a lot of longer, open world games this year and I want more short games. This was just a little too short.

Just finished Ion Fury. This game deserves to be in the "pantheon" of Build engine games, from the three classics it resembles Shadow Warrior the most in weapon loadout and enemy behaviour. Good level design although you may say it leans too much on the biolab/sewer FPS cliches. Just like Duke3D expect a lot of air vents traversing. Highly recommended if you are a fan of boomer shooters.

Thats 2/5 for this season.

I didn’t get on with Synergia (the writing was kind of mediocre) so I dropped it quickly.

And I don’t feel like a weird immersive sim right now so rather than forcing myself to play Ctrl Alt Ego I’m gonna postpone it until the next Blitz.

Completely forgot to update I finished my second game.

Blaster Master Zero is completed with 100% items and true ending. Pretty good time but I went in not aware that it's an expanded remake of Blaster Master. Pretty much the Blaster Master version of Metroid: Zero Mission actually. So after getting through stuff I was familiar with and seeing how things expanded I began getting more hooked. Overall it's much easier than the NES game as I only died a few times. But still a fun time and now that I'm through it I look forward to the next two games they did since it'll be all new for me.

But now I'm getting deep into Danganronpa 2 from my Blitz list. It's the long game I have in my list and I passed the previous point I played to seven years back so now it's all new and interesting so I'm having a good time.

In your opinion, is the original still worth playing or should I just play the remake? I don't really care that the remake is easier than the original, so is there anything that the original does better, or would you say the remake is the better game (in every aspect)?
Blaster Master is one of the old Sunsoft games I always meant to play but then never did so lately it's been popping in my head along with some others just like Little Nemo.

Well, keep in mind I beat the original like 30 years ago, so while I remember some of it to compare in the game, it's tough to fully compare against them. Overall I think it just makes sense to play Blaster Master Zero over the original because it's essentially all the content from the first game and more, including a whole new area added for the true ending section which does offer a decent challenge and isn't terribly difficult to unlock. The "remake" also adds more story which isn't necessary, but it's welcome. And there's not a lot more so it doesn't slow things down much, but it mostly helps set up the next games more than anything.

So yeah, just play Blaster Master Zero.

My god, Metroid Prime is a slog. I will admit that I am generally averse to Metroidvania style games, but I find everything so tedious, unsatisfying and unrewarding.

I get the Prime games push some buttons for a lot of people and that’s awesome, but as I was playing Prime Remastered all I could think about was how much fun I’m not having playing this game.

Yeah I figured it was a while since you played the original, but if there's nothing that stands out as being worse in Zero versus your memory, I think that's good since typically memories of a game are a bit more rosy than the actual game. I imagine a modern game will offer some nice QoL stuff versus a NES game that had to work with a 2 face button gamepad. :D

I've been playing Atelier Ryza a bunch. All the characters are idiot kids, even the supposed adults. The character writing is just mostly embarrassing, but I'm curious about the world building and the history that they are unveiling.
Feels like there's a bit too much combat. The upside is that you can ignore some of it if you just avoid the enemies in the world, that is, no random battles. But obviously you need to do some combat to actually be able to progress. Building overpowered items with alchemy can only get you so far.
I generally like how it looks and sounds. Still a bit bummed that they stopped doing English dubs after Firis though.

Completed Hitman 2, I just realized I only had 6 levels from the standard game and not the rest of the DLC levels that cant be bought for Hitman 2 anymore, only for Hitman 3/World of Assassination.

Anyway, the game is good and very enjoyable if you dont mind methodic gameplay that may require patience at some parts. 3/5 for this season.

Time for a little update:
  • Decided to replace Tenderfoot Tactics with The Dungeon Of Naheulbeuk: The Amulet Of Chaos. I started playing the former and it seemed like a competently and well made game but it's not exactly what I want to play right now so replaced it with the latter that has a much more standard struture while also being a turn based tactics rpg.
  • Finished Everspace 2 and loved everything about it. There are a few nitpicks I can point out regarding weapon and abilities balancing as well as a somewhat lackluster final "boss" but none of it detracts from the fact the game is great. 5/5.
  • Finished Penko Park and, in one word, it's amazing. One of those hidden gems, that was clearly made with love and care. The only downside is how short it is, completing it 100% took me 5 1/2 hours. Still it's a 5/5.
  • Finished Prodigal and it's really hard to say how I feel about it. Being a classic zelda clone it took a lot less time than what I was expecting but at the same time it feels like I only saw half of what the game had to offer??? It's weird, there's 2 pages of items you can collect and I only filled the first one but I advanced the story and completed every dungeon and quest... Either way to story and combat were average so it gets a 3/5.

Finished my third game: Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair.

Been 7+ years since I played the first game and a chapter of this game but it was still a pretty good time these years later. Minigames largely sucked but the story and characters are roughly what I remember and expected. A bit of clunky writing in the middle but bunch of fun surprises, interesting logic, etc. I bought the rest of the games in the series so I'm ready to play through all of them but I'll likely wait a bit for some other stuff.

My last two Blitz games are the second and third BlazBlue games, so I've got a load of fighting ahead of me.

It's like a 6 out of 10 for me. Just about every element was just above average or otherwise "fine." There was a lot of room for improvement and if they make a sequel (I'm assuming they will) I hope to see a lot more depth and fun added to the game as it largely felt like busywork throughout.

I'm working on the second BlazBlue game and devoting way too much time to Challenges and Tutorials so far. I think I've got around seven hours on the game and all but one hour or so has been in those two modes. I'll probably start plowing heavily through the story starting tonight since I still have the third BlazBlue to play afterwards as well.

Finished the main story of Atelier Ryza.
It's fun. All the stuff I wrote earlier remained true for the most part. There was some character growth here and there and some shocking revelations about stuff and things, but it's a really simple story in the end.

All the DLC stories are self contained, separate from the main game. Seems like they all take place during various parts of the main story, just aren't integrated into it in any way. I'm going to do them, but have no intention to grind out some of the achievements.
In terms of the blitz though, that's 3 games done. Little Nemo for the NES and God of War (2018) are left, I'll probably hop into Nemo after the Ryza DLC.

Sunset Overdrive is a decent third person shooter open world with huge emphasis on movement and traversal mechanics. Item collecting is optional, sub quests may make your life easier on the main quest. Lots of weapons to choose. Not too long nor too short. DLC (integrated on the Steam version) adds new playable areas. I recommend it.

Thats 4/5 for this season. Vanquish should be next.

Finished Little Nemo: The Dream Master.
Used save states at level beginnings to separate sessions, but it's a pretty short game overall so you could do it in one session if you are good enough at the game. It's kind of a pain in the ass tbh, lots of enemy placements that just feel mean.
Kind of a structurally weird game too. First 7 levels you collect keys during the level and they can be anywhere, so if you miss one at the beginning, it's a pain in the ass to actually go backwards and try to find what you missed. You feed candy to certain animals and can then become them. Or in some cases you ride them. But really most of the time you peel their skin and wear it as your own. They have different skills, as a bee you can fly for a bit and shoot needles out of your ass, gorilla can punch and climb, frog jumps high and bellyflops enemies etc.
Anyway, back to the weird structure. In the first 7 levels all you do as Nemo is feed candy and avoid enemies, you don't have attacks of your own. But then for the last 3 levels, you get a morningstar, well, they call it a morningstar but it's really more like a scepter. The Nemo sprite actually has the scepter on his back from the start of the game, I'm not sure if it's supposed to signify that he had it all the time and just couldn't use it or didn't know how, or if they just didn't want to make a different sprite for it. The dialogue doesn't really make it clear. Anyways, now you can bonk enemies and have a charge attack, like later NES Mega Man games. And the last 3 levels also have boss fights, the first 7 didn't.
Just seems a bit odd, especially for its time.

That's 4 games done, God of War is left.

Vanquish has a lot of similarities to Binary Domain but simpler and more arcadey. I believe its a very average third person shooter with some above average scenarios. I still recommend it but you mileage may vary.

And thats 5/5 for this season.

Game #4 completed. BlazBlue: Continuum Shift Extend is a really good time. Was always into the older Guilty Gear games and this series really just feels a lot like those to me but obviously new characters and story and all that. Feels really good to play and has a ton to do. Took me around twenty-five hours to wrap up all the story and some other odds and ends.

And that leaves me my final Blitz game, BlazBlue: Chronophantasma Extend. I'm worried it'll be even longer!

Finished Lost Judgment + Kaito Files & Jedi Survivor.

Even though I have some gripes with Lost Judgment, it's definitely one of my favourite RGG games alongside Y7 & Zero.

Added Valkyrie Elysium & 40K Boltgun to the list.

I'm swapping God of War to Teslagrad. I can't very well play God of War without knowing all the backstory that happened in the earlier games, and it's going to take me a while to watch all of that.
Teslagrad is one of those games I always meant to play, and now that the sequel is out there's no better time. I'm going to try the original first even though the remastered is out too. If I end up liking it enough to get all the achievements, then in a few years time I can do that again with the remaster. :smart-thinking-blob:

Finished the fifth game. Woo! I meant to pick shorter games overall as this year has been a lot of longer games than usual but instead three of the five ended up being 20+ hours.

Final game was the third BlazBlue game, Chrono Phantasma. I've played the first three all this year and already started up the final game, Central Fiction, last night. Was thinking I'd wait until the next Blitz to put that in there but odds are I'll wrap it up before the next Blitz hits and be done with BlazBlue. Great games I should have been playing as they released.
