We just finished a successful nineteenth season of the Backlog Blitz. Halfway through the year and things seem like they sort of were quieter this last quarter? Sure, you've got your big Elden Ring DLC but otherwise it seems it was a good time to clear out those backlogs. If you've been here from the start and completed all your games each time then you're up to 95 completed backlog games! We have now bested Lassie for number of seasons running. Anyone remember Lassie? What's that, girl? Timmy hasn't completed games from his backlog and is now the shame of his community? Timmy sucks.

We had 14 participants (-6 from the previous two Blitz) with 70 game goals set (-27 change) and 55 of them were completed (-6 change). Congrats on clearing out those backlogs! The rate of completion is possibly the highest we've ever seen! Participant numbers took a big hit so hopefully this doesn't mean people are losing interest. But for those of us that keep taking part, there are more games to complete! Congrats to Knurek for winning the raffle. Make sure to give them congrats for clearing that backlog and winning. Knurek got the win for completing Florence. I have unkind words to say about the game but at least Knurek is done and can move on to better games, right?

I don't remember what's coming out this quarter. Anything big? Maybe not? I'm looking forward to UFO 50 and I think that's this quarter? Otherwise it's likely a lot of smaller profile but still great games around the quarter. Silksong is coming out, right? Right?!

The spreadsheet has been updated, the prize pool has been reset. We'll start with $20.00 but chipping in is always welcome. The details to do so will be posted separately within the thread soon after we get started.

Pick your games accordingly!

What it is:

It's a simple way to clear out some backlog games. You select a number of specific games you want to complete and if you complete them in a set time frame you have a chance to pick a game of your choice within the prize limits.

Rules:

First off, there is no time limit on when you can join. If you come in late and only have a month left please feel free to join. Even one completed game will get you entered into the raffle detailed below.

Everyone shares the same rules so an agreed amount of time would be set (three months this time) and then a set amount of games you want to complete in that time (been using five games). You then pick your specific five games with the intention that you don't go changing it all the time. The idea isn't that once you beat some game you go and list it and mark it complete. Instead, you pick five games to complete at the start of the Blitz and ideally you complete them as well as anything else you want to finish in that time.

Prize:

In the end, I suggest a prize pool and a simple raffle done. I always chip in $20 to start it and accept any other additions. Raffle winners must use at least half but can go up to the full price of a game (capped at $60 if the prize pool gets large enough). Leftover goes to the next drawn winner until it gets down to $0 (or close enough at which point I'll just add it to the next Blitz).

Thoughts?

There's no entry fee or anything so there's really no loss for taking part or starting it and then ignoring it. It's just a fun way to clear out backlog games and have discussion about what you're completing. And commiserate if you pick a game you don't enjoy and sour one of your spots on your list.

I created the Google Sheet so feel free to add yourself and games:

Hidden content
You need to reply to this thread in order to see this content.
I changed to a hide until replied as I think some people had issues with the hide until reacted. Ask any questions and sorry for those that already posted their new lists in the previous thread. Feel free to just post it again here as we continue for the next three months here.

Good luck, everyone!

1- Forza Horizon 4
The news about delisting finally made me play this after a year in the backlog.

2-Yakuza Kiwami 2
This one is a bit weird, I really liked 0 and Kiwami but I never continued with the series. This has been sitting in my backlog for like, 3-4 years so I think it's time.

3-Twelve Minutes
Saw mixed things about this one.

4-Life is Strange: True Colors
A bit of the same as Yakuza, 2-3 years in the backlog, enjoyed the previous ones but never got around to play this one. Now that a new one got announced I need to catch up a little bit, even if they are not related.

5-Kentucky Route Zero
By far the one that has been in my backlog the longest on this list, I've heard good things about it so let's give it a try.

I hope I'm not getting to ambitious here but i'm optimistic, here to another great blitz!

Sorry, forgot to finish cleaning up the spreadsheet. It's cleaned up now. If you edited in your name games into the still full spreadsheet you'll need to do it again since I wiped it all.

1. One Piece Odyssey: Currently playing

2. Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair: Played the first game last year. I aim to finish the trilogy, shooting game spinoff and the Danganronpa 3 anime within the year.

3. Nights of Azure: Sitting in the backlog for 4 years. Controller didn't work properly and I was not in the mood to fix it back then. A few days ago I randomly found that it works with the community layout fix. Also fixed the video audio issue on the Deck so now the game is finally playable at my end.

4. Tinykin: Pikmin on PC!

5. The Fruit of Grisaia: Currently reading this on Switch. It is the all-in-one version released by Prototype. No way I can finish the whole series in three months so I am breaking it down. It seems to be a pretty long read so I plan to spend 30 minutes on it everyday.

Edit: Honourable mention, Trail of Cold Steel 3. After finishing the first four games this is going to be the next big game to play.

I just finished WARP., which is 3D Action Puzzle game with some very light metroidvania elements

First, the Steam version of the game doesnt work properly in my computer, most likely due to some funky PhysX implementation that tanks the framerate about 10 minutes into the game. The EA App version, which you can redeem using the CD-key provided in the Steam version, works as intended, still the performance is far from what you would expect from a 12 year old game.

It's a short game, 6-7 hours, maybe more if you are trying to get every collectible, which is a waste of time due to all online features being shutdown last year.

If you want to play it get it cheap and redeem it in the EA app.

Decided on my five games tonight after changing my mind on a couple. This time picking all five games that I don't mind streaming since that got in the way of me finishing Seabed quickly.
  • GRIME
  • Pronty
  • The Talos Principle
  • Chicory: A Colorful Tale
  • Tangle Tower
First two are in my Metroidvania goal category and the remaining three are pulled from my Overwhelmingly Positive list. I've started the first four all at one point in time but I'll just start them all over since it's been far too long and I never got that far.

I was waiting for the monthly reveal and to finish my summer shopping before deciding what to play.
With all that behind us here's my five picks for this blitz:
  • Kingsvein
  • Figment 2
  • Crystal Project
  • Lenna's Inception
  • Fire Emblem: The Binding Blade - Hopefully the rom works without issues otherwise I'll change it for something else

No real theme for mine, just a bunch of games that I've been thinking about lately for one reason or another

1. Souldiers. I liked the demo way back when, but I also seem to recall that it didn't review as well as I thought it would, I think people also said it was hard but it's been a while, maybe they patched it a bit. It's still mixed on Steam, didn't bother to look at the recent reviews in detail though. My expectations are still positive, based on my time with the demo.
2. REDO! Bought this somewhat recently, around March this year. No real expectations, bought purely based on the trailer looking alright.
3. Unheard - Voices of Crime. Always thought this concept is interesting, time to give it a shot.
4. Tech Support: Error Unknown. Another one that's a bit unique I suppose. Not entirely sure how much of a sleuthing game this is, screenshots remind me of this other game I can't recall the name of right now.
5. Just Cause 2. Known quantity, not much to say here.

Going to join in this time since I missed quite a few:
  • Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney (Currently playing, in Case 5 which people say is still half of the game :face-with-tears-of-joy: )
  • Doom Eternal (Played a chunk at launch but it's been so long I need to start over)
  • Umineko When They Cry - Question Arcs (Obviously a big undertaking but I plan on reading this along side playing other games)
  • Trails in the Sky SC
  • The Talos Principle

Just completed Flatout Ultimate Carnage's career mode. I must be getting old because I didnt enjoyed it as much as I thought I should. In fact at times I was annoyed when a random car would try to take me down so another CPU car with a better chance to win gets an advantage. Or that little piece of debris that flips your car at the last moment making you lose the race. I liked Gas Guzzlers better, or at least I was less annoyed by it.

Second game of this season.

The Book of Unwritten Tales. Good length (15 hours) and rather easy: any point of interest/hotspot that has served its purpose or no longer provides useful clues is discarded so the pace of the game is streamlined. You get to play as 4 characters in total. I recommend it.

Third game of the season.

Dark Void Zero is an annoying game with annoying mechanics and a jetpack that's so unstable and fast that you will run into enemies all time. I'm removing it from the list.

EDIT: Replacing it with Steamworld Heist

I appreciate the sassy OP, and congrats to Knurek!

Hm, not sure if I'll participate in this one. I'm not even halfway through the Elden Ring DLC I'd guess, and there are some other ongoing games I'm still playing a lot (Valheim, Helldivers others). But, I am doing a new PC build and maybe should celebrate by slamming out a couple of backlog items, at least.

I do wonder how many notice I actually rewrite the first few paragraphs for every thread, heh. I'm assuming you meant the sass aimed at Knurek's winning game? It's a game. Nicest thing it deserves to be said. (it's not bad but it was just hugely overrated the year it came out)

Almost had a third batch of sass as I was going to call out two people who were responsible for 60% of the unfinished games last season but I figured I'd be nice (since I already harassed them over Discord).

Maybe I'll mix up the formatting or something a bit so it's not always the same looking and might draw some new eyes to it? We'll see if I remember with the next season.

Finished my first Blitz game: Tangle Tower. A joy to play through. Not the most difficult or anything like that but for someone that doesn't get through many point-and-click adventures it was breezy and had a pretty solid story (barring a couple major beats but I can shrug and accept it). Definitely worth it if you played Detective Grimoire and enjoyed it and there's another new case releasing this year, too.

Started and finished REDO!.

Eh.
It feels kind of bad to play if I'm honest. Feels like input lag, plus some actions like jump has an extra frame of start up animation before the action starts so it feels extra laggy.

Started Souldiers.
Digging it so far. It (mostly) looks, sounds and plays great.
Sometimes I notice some odd pixel shifting which is distracting when it happens but it's very rare. Also some sound effects seem to double up in a bad way, for example if there are multiple torches in the screen, the sound they make gets distorted and clippy. There are also a few odd UI/UX choices that make me scratch my head a bit.

Finished 2 games of my list
Figment 2 - I enjoyed it but it's definitely a very bite-sized experience. What's there is good and well put together but it's about half as long as the original game which doesn't leave too much room to explore any subject. I also wish the chronologic jump between the two games story's wasn't as big, in the first one you're a kid/teen and in the second you're a married man with a kid. Both stories make sense in their own context since they both reflect the typical problems one faces in those times but it feels like a lot of potential stories were left unexplored by doing things this way.

Crystal Project - Definitely one of the most ambitious and unique games I've ever played and also one of the best. It's an open-world 3D metroidvania with turn-based jrpg-style combat, a robust job/stat progression system and quite a few puzzle-based dungeons with little to no hand-holding where you're free to explore anywhere in any order. The game is also massive, the main story takes you to all the corners, and heights, of the world and by the end, if you followed the critical path, you've only seen about half of it as there are a lot of optional dungeons, quests, bosses and an underwater world to explore. It's an absolute must-play.

One of the greatest adventure game of all time.

Finished Souldiers. It's pretty good! It has a few technical issues, and perhaps a few odd design choices, but overall I really enjoyed it.
I'm going to look at a few guides and see about possibly 100% all map regions, and then maybe check how different the two other classes are to play and if they are fun, but will probably not play much beyond that. Definitely will not get all achievements.

Finished Kingsvein and it was great. For anyone that enjoys cRPGs it should be mandatory to play all of Rad Cortex's output as they are all amazing, each in their own way. My only complaint is that the color palette in this game is a bit too dark and monochromatic and can make spotting things a bit too difficult at times but it felt an intentional choice and it fits with the overall themes and sentiments of the game.

Completed my second game: The Talos Principle. Got all three main endings (not all variations) which includes solving all puzzles and optional stuff. It's a really solid puzzle game but could have used more variety in puzzles and art. Kind of wears on you a bit when you do the same sort of move for the dozenth time. It also commits the puzzle game crime of taking too long to set up solutions or to try things out so some puzzles can be pretty frustrating (especially when it uses one specific puzzle type mechanic). But still had fun and will do the DLC eventually.

ganmo Just checking if you plan on joining the Blitz. You didn't last time and I left your row on the sheet but I can remove you this time if you'd like. I usually leave anyone who has a linked name so they don't have to relink it so you're still listed at the moment.

Jack Keane 2 is a mediocre, maybe below mediocre adventure game. Just like some other games like Broken Sword 3 it tries to be both a P&C and an action game but the controls are awful, specially when you have to do some platforming. The progression is flawed with the first part of the game being the hardest one. The game still has some charm which prevents it from being just a plain bad game. Play it at your own risk only if you played the first game (which I did over 10 years ago)

Final game for this season, back to Fallout 4.

Completed my third game a few days back: Pronty. Solid but not exceptional Metroidvania. Kind of ticks off all the boxes, has some interesting combat elements, but also doesn't do anything that'll really surprise or make it stand out at the top. But still worth it for people that play a lot of Metroidvanias and want another quality one. And it does have a couple decent secrets (hidden ending and true ending require a bit of extra work) so that's a bonus.

Getting deeper into Chicory and I have GRIME on the backburner as I just don't feel excited to return to it but I'm guessing as I get further and discover more abilities or whatever my opinion might become more favorable.

Completed my fourth game, Chicory. I really appreciated Wandersong, the developer's previous game, by the end of it. Gameplay was quite average but the writing and characters really won me over and helped push me through to completing it. The writing is still solid here but I do think both of Wandersong's pros and cons met closer in the middle. Gameplay was overall improved but still pretty light and not really engaging. Doodling all around the world and coloring things in was fun but also was really just up to the player on how much and what to do most the time. The writing was quite solid and tells a more serious story than the visuals would have you expect (similar to Wandersong) but also just wasn't as interesting of a story. Dialogue and characters were still fun.

Overall I had a solid time with it but I didn't really love it like some others did. I think it's around a 7 or 8 out of 10. It's a good time but could have done more to keep me hooked more.

Been working on my final game, GRIME. Seems I'm fairly far as I was told I could probably beat it within a couple hours if I focused on just going towards objectives but I've been roaming and exploring a lot so I'll probably wrap it up in the next couple days.

And Blitz completed. Final game was GRIME: Definitive Edition. Really mixed feelings. Disliked the first few hours to the point of considering swapping it out. Improved a good bit with upgrades and abilities, but ultimately I still had plenty of frustrations and despite clearing a few optional bosses (mainly because I didn't even know they were optional) I was glad to just get the credits and move on. I explored a fair bit and did find plenty of optional things but there's a ton more I could have done but no thanks.

Finished my last 2 games of the blitz.
Lenna's Inception is a 2D zelda-like with randomized environments. It revolves mostly around meta commentary on how games work and the way their protagonists are presented, and it's fairly successful at that, but it inevitably falls in some of the same traps of the games it is critiquing. I got the neutral ending and for curiosity I looked at how to get the good one and it's insane. You need to explore the whole map to find hidden dungeons with random rewards in order to subdue the bosses peacefully, which would be a massive undertaking on a predetermined map but the whole thing is seed-based and random, so it's impossible to get help from guides. The game is good but I'm not masochist enough to attempt to get that ending.
Fire Emblem: Binding Blade - It's an enjoyable game but after playing the other 2 gba FE's I felt like I was replaying the same game again for the 3rd time. I could swear some of the maps were reused between these games. They are good games but after playing 3 of them in such a short span of time I feel pretty burned out. Next up is the gamecube one, I guess, but I'll save it for next year.

Had forgotten I even had Praey for the God on my list, but have completed it.
Very vague in terms of story, but I rather enjoyed the puzzles posed by the bosses later in the game and the survival aspects. It's the Shadows of the Colossus-like I've played, but it seems to be a genre I enjoy it turns out.

1/5 for the month, It's been one of those months where I end up not playing the games from my list.

I've been mostly playing Just Cause 2 in the past week and it's fairly meaty (if you do all the missions), but I think my other remaining games are shorter so I can probably still get it all done in a month.
JC2 is a meaty 100-120 hours game if you attempt to 100% it. Attempt, because due to some bug you'll never reach 100% completion.

Kentucky Route Zero done. Started really strong for me but it kinda went downhill from there, by the time I reached the two final arcs I was ready for it to end.
Good vibes and music but sometimes I felt it went up its own ass. Cool experience tho and works great on the Deck.
