Throughout Dark Devotion you’ll discover an array of weapons, armors, and relics with which to enhance your character. Each item has its own attributes and statistics, and is customizable with mystical runes. It is essential that you maximize your strengths and adapt your inventory to the enemy you’re facing. Choose wisely...


Dark Devotion is a story of perseverance, dedication, and secrets. Every chest you open, every item you encounter holds another piece of the story: be it a letter, weapon, or clue, all will help you on your quest. Whether you find these secrets amongst the shadows or in the dead hand of another character ...well, that all depends.




In the Temple, Faith is your only recourse against the heathen droves. Defeat them to collect Faith and unlock secret paths, special chests, and more. But remember to use your Faith sparingly. Nothing lasts forever.



The Temple yearns to see you dead. Your survival depends on using the right item at the right time to heal your wounds or dispel a curse. Some of these items can be looted, others are scattered throughout the Temple in secret places. Employ them wisely… your life depends on it.



The eye of your God is ever-watchful. Complete an act of bravery or skill, and your God might bless you. But the Temple is also rife with despair and sickness, ready to destroy those who lack courage and temperance. Learn quickly its ways, or suffer.




Salvation is fleeting, so choose your route wisely. Every world in Dark Devotion offers several different paths. Each one is original, but all are interconnected, and the only commonality they share is that there is no turning back.




Completing your quest requires shrewd interpretation of the secrets shrouded within the Temple. It’s easy to get lost, though this might bring you favor...depending on the secret you uncover. Perhaps the Temple will reveal a hidden altar where one’s story can be saved if one honors the Temple appropriately...or perhaps not.

looks amazing, wish have some more time, i have too many games, will wishlist for future!
i like the setting, it makes me feel like diablo 1 and the butcher.

This looks so cool! I really hope the exploration/metroidvania aspect can match the style though.

Been burned by some other metroidvanias lately that were more style than substance. 😬

Wow, this looks great. Definitely going to pick it up at launch if initial word of mouth is in any way decent. I really dig the visual style.

This game is quite brutal feeling so far, and I kinda like it. Only very early, and I am going to hold off until the controller issues get sorted (anyone else that is playing having any luck?) hopefully.

I have seen comparisons to Salt & Sanctuary and Dead Cells. I think those are both excellent games, and those feel... a bit more polished? There is a bit of sluggishness here in DD. That said, I am looking forward to the more crafted design of the areas. I love a good procedurally generated level, but I have enough of those right now. I am excited to see the world the devs have created on this one. Hopefully more to add soon if I can get a controller to work! I see that the dev has posted something in the Steam discussion.

Deactivating all steam controller support and using xinput worked for me, the game would just default to m+kb otherwise with no way to get a controller to work.

very early on impressions:
  • a little rough around every edge, feels very indie
  • lacking some things you might expect like jumping
  • no key rebinds and odd controls / ui
  • world looks interesting and the challenge seems good

i'm certainly motivated to go deeper though i might wait for some patches, hopefully they're coming

For me, using an X1 wireless controller, what worked for me was:

Launch Big Picture Mode
Navigate to Dark Devotion in the Library
Manage game
Controller Options
Steam Input Per-Game Setting - Forced Off

Now the controller works. I don't love the button maps, and haven't figure out if that is something I can change without effing up controller support again, so I am just trying to get used to it for now. I keep hitting RB/LB and rolling either the wrong way, or rolling when I don't want to. I don't quite understand the need for both individual direction roll buttons (LB = roll to the left, RB = roll to the right) in addition to pressing B to simply roll the direction you are facing.

I suppose it makes more sense so you can roll right while facing left... but it's just more buttons to remember in a pinch in an already brutal game =)

Mixed steam reviews are bit unfortunate, and is yet another example that one must must have game be issue-proof at release. I've already had one of my friend (who liked Unworthy and S&S) dismiss this game because of the reviews.

How similar is it to Death's Gambit? That's a game that I really wanted to love, but it was always a bit too sluggish for me.

it's very deliberate, might even be a bit slower than deaths gambit (haven't played much of deaths gambit)

some dev comments on steam make me think that short term they're looking into fixing bugs and there might not be much coming after that or if there is it won't be soon

for now i've gone ahead with the time honored tradition of mapping my gamepad to the keyboard+mouse controls

I'll probably hold off for a while then. It does have a good look to it so hopefully it will end up in a better spot after some patches.

I've been playing Dark Devotion for the past few days and I honestly haven't been able to put it down. Aside of not being able to change the resolution, or rebind keys or even a jump button, this game has a lot going for it. The combat is interesting and engaging, the random blessing/curse system will have you constantly paying attention to the your character. Not to mention the armor/health system, which can be abused really easily by saying all of armor repair kiys plus the armor +3 bonus. Not really felling the random weapon dropping mechanic, but at least you can find certain weapons and permenatly add them to your catalog.

In comparsion to Death's Gambit, it starts off slower. But once you get a handle on the combat, the game is just as fast.

I saw a mention of the levels being procedurally generated. They are not. The levels and rooms never change, but the rune/blessing/items will. I don't really consider that procedurally generated. There's also a mapping system, which is very rough, but gets the job done.

I need a bit more time to finish up my review, but I'm really enjoying the game.

I love a good procedurally generated level, but I have enough of those right now.
Yeah that was me earlier. I probably could have worded it better but I was implying that the fact that Dark Devotion was NOT a procedurally generated game was a + for me as I have enough that are.

Happy to hear your impressions after more time, I'll definitely keep going myself so that I can see the game open up. I am barely into the first area, but haven't had more time!
