DAYMARE: 1998 is a third-person survival horror with hardcore survival mechanics and hard to kill enemies. It requires a strategical approach to combat and puzzles and offers a multi-character point of view on the story, revealing a deep and obscure lore.
The scene is set with a secret research facility, a deadly chemical weapon and a special security team to investigate this incident with the potential to become much more than just a security breach. Follow the steps of an elite soldier, a helicopter pilot and a forest ranger, as they play out their roles in an event that transforms one peaceful small town into a deadly zone and its citizens into bloodthirsty monsters. Take the creatures down first, before looking for any clues and evidence to bring more sense to the mess. Keep track of your itinerary, as resources are scarce in a situation like this! Anything can happen when your daymares become real..

Fans of the iconic cinematographic brands and classical gloomy survival horror games of the '90s will be thrilled, seeing how DAYMARE: 1998 recreates the atmosphere of the most beloved works from the end of the millennium and places a typical yet fresh story in the middle of it. The plot unfolds through the eyes of various characters, putting players in the shoes of different personalities that will guide them through their theories and doubts about the situation. Backtracking, managing ammo, collecting lore items, solving environmental puzzles and the overall difficulty will help players jump a couple decades back and get chilled to the bone in their first real daymare.

Nice to see it getting released even after the failed kickstarter. It's not the kind of game that I enjoy but I hope they can get soke success.

I dunno about this. Seems like a title like this is too ambitious for a small indie studio to make AND execute in a way that works. Hope it's good, though!

Looks good, but I can't get a good sense of movement or combat in terms of whether it's the kind I like or at least okay with (original Resident Evil, Cold Fear, etc) or the kind that frustrates me (Overblood, lot of other indie inspired by RE games).

I don't mind adding to my wishlist though.

So the game is releasing tomorrow. I'm quite interested, however I have some concerns.
  • The game has no key rebinding. This is a serious oversight for any PC game. Support might be added post-release.
  • The game's mouse support in menus is... kinda lacking. It's WASD menu navigation all the way, baby. Again, an irritating oversight for a game with a LOT of inventory management. Once again, might get fixed later but there's no promises.
  • The developers have been a bit dismissive of negative feedback. I definitely respect sticking to a vision, but a lot of their defenses come down to "Oh, well, it was like this in 1998 so we're just being faithful". They would be wise to heed general gamefeel feedback instead of insisting that maybe the game just isn't for you if you disagree with literally any of its design choices.

The last part is sad. I admire the work people put into passion projects, but those are also not safe of (legitimate) criticism.

I've been watching some gameplay footage while the game downloads.

It's... interesting. Leaving aside any gameplay concerns, it's clearly a game made by people who tried really hard with some degree of competency. This is in a whole other league compared to most of those low budget made by one person affairs you find on Steam.

The dialogue is... certainly a thing. It veers between perfectly ordinary, having subtitles completely different from the voiceover, and meme-tastic lines. If it is sincerely trying to be like an atrociously translated game from 1998, then it's certainly succeeding in that regard in a somewhat endearing way, like someone played Operation Raccoon City and decided that it wasn't edgy enough.

The presentation is surprisingly slick. It's amazing what a small team can accomplishing using modern tools. 10-20 years ago AAA devs struggled to make something that looked a fraction as slick. The biggest flaw I notice off the bat is that a lack of convincing enemy attack animations. All they really do is grab you and vomit on you. Adding in some biting and scratching should be a priority post-release. It has that stiffness, that constrained animation variety that clearly betrays its low budget nature. But it looks decent in motion. This game has the makings of a cult hit.

I just tried the demo of this. It was ok, good effort for a small dev team. Its rough in terms of the gun play but ive been playing RE2 so maybe its only noticeable to me coming off that (which just feels much better to control).

I probably will pick it up in a sale.

Dang, that's a pretty solid changelog. Regarding future content, they'd be very savvy to look into a female character story DLC. It's obligatory for anything that has any pretense of a 90s horror game. Alone in the Dark had a female character. Resident Evil consequently had one, too. The male vs female dynamic of horror is a really important one. Solving your problems through raw strength vs craftiness. The game needs the equivalent of an Ada Wong campaign, IMO. It would flesh it out nicely. I mean, the story isn't exactly salvagable, but it can be expanded upon in interesting ways.
