FINAL FANTASY I through FINAL FANTASY VI return soon as the ultimate 2D remasters. Here’s what you need to know.

The FINAL FANTASY Pixel Remaster series will comprise FINAL FANTASY I through FINAL FANTASY VI, with each game releasing individually. For long-term fans that will be hugely exciting news - a chance to revisit some of their most beloved RPGs of all time in a way that perfectly captures the spirit of those original game.

But if anything, we’re even more excited for new fans who’ll get to experience them for the very first time. These games are true masterpieces, and the FINAL FANTASY Pixel Remaster series will offer the best way to play them yet!

FINAL FANTASY
This is the ironically named game that started it all. You take control of the Warriors of Light, off on a journey to defeat four fiends and restore peace to the world.
So many of the elements of the series that we’ve come to know and love make their debut right here in this very first entry: a massive world full of mystery, some iconic monster designs and that incredible music.

FINAL FANTASY II
The second game in the series introduces a new world, new characters and something that would become a trademark of the series: innovation.
The story focuses on the conflict between the hostile Empire of Palamecia and the rebel resistance. A small group of heroes is all that stands between the world and ruin.
FINAL FANTASY II demonstrates the developers’ willingness to push their boundaries and try new things. For example, rather than sticking to the predictable, the game features a proficiency system in which characters skill with weapons and abilities increase the more they used them.
Fun fact: this is the FINAL FANTASY game that introduced the world to chocobos! Now that’s a legacy.

FINAL FANTASY III
When darkness falls and the land is robbed of light, four young heroes are chosen by the crystals to head off an exciting journey across a vast and hostile land.
This critically-acclaimed entry in the series innovated with a flexible job system, which lets characters change their roles in combat at any time. Many of the most famous elements of FINAL FANTASY started here too - for example, it was the first to introduce summons, including series mainstays Bahamut and Shiva!

FINAL FANTASY IV
FINAL FANTASY IV delivers one of the richest and most powerful stories in the series. It’s filled with characters and scenarios that fans continue to love to this day.
It focuses on the dark knight Cecil, who finds himself stripped of his position and rank when he questions his king’s increasingly troubling orders. When he’s sent on a simple delivery mission with his friend Kain, the shocking events that follow send him and a group of allies on an incredible journey of betrayal, love and redemption.
This is the first game to feature the Active Time Battle (ATB) system, which combines turn-based and real-time elements to create fast-paced and strategic combat.

FINAL FANTASY V
The world of FINAL FANTASY V is on the verge of destruction because the elemental crystals that bring life and prosperity to the lands have lost their power.
The only hope lies in four heroes: Bartz, Princess Lenna of Castle Tycoon, pirate Faris and the mysterious Galuf. Driven together by fate, they set off on a quest that to save the planet itself.
As well as refining the ATB system, FINAL FANTASY V expands your strategic options massively through a greatly expanded job system, which let you customize your characters with 22 different jobs.

FINAL FANTASY VI
FINAL FANTASY VI is a game that’s beloved by fans and critics alike.
That’s partly thanks to its incredible setting and story. It’s set in a land where magic has disappeared, and humanity has instead turned to iron, gunpowder, steam and other technology.
Actually, it would be more accurate to say that magic is mostly gone - a young woman enslaved by the evil Empire still has the power. When she encounters a powerful ancient being called an Esper, she sets off a chain of events that will have epic and terrible consequences.

The games will each be released individually as part of the “Pixel Remaster Series,” but Square Enix hasn’t shared release timing beyond the fact that they’re “coming soon.”

I wish they would include the original sprites as a choice.

On a related note, I wish remasters included the original version with the remastered version, especially with these older titles where the ori9inal version would not take up much space. Granted, I know playing the original version on a 4K monitor/TV is still wishy washy without some sort of upscaling even to the ori9inal.

It sort of looks like they're going for what the end-result of the original sprites would look like on a CRT monitor. At first glance it doesn't look terrible, but I'll wait to see.

It's not like the original versions aren't easily playable on just about any open platform. You just need a good CRT shader if you're going for the authentic look.

I expect the UI would be mobile-esque just like their predecessors. And of course, it'll be left to the modders to make things right once again.

Not too used to the colors, i don't even remember what it used to look like on a crt but only remember FF6 being less colorful and more gritty. Guess we'll find out when they release new screenshots.

The font in English looks so bad while the Japanese font looks normal. So weird, someone handling the localization must have messed it up.

I wonder if it's just because they're rushing to get the first few games out, wouldn't be surprised if those fonts are fixed at release.

FFVI pixel remaster is out, I bought it. So far I'm enjoying it, the only music I didn't like is the battle music, lol. And the stupid UI elements that you can't really turn off, like the forward button in combat.

There's a mod out for a custom tileset for the overworld, the default is a lot brighter, there are some differences though as shown in one of the screenshots but probably not too big of a deal.

There's also a better pixel art version of controller buttons, ripped from Undertale I think but it fits better.

I finished with FF IV on the weekend. It's been quite interesting following the evolution of the series. Oddly enough, FF II is actually the "darker" one out of these four, because it didn't shy away from killing the team members permanently. FF IV tried to do this same old trope to a lesser degree, settling in with quite a number of fakeouts, although I must admit the end result is quite satisfying.

The job system of III returned in FF V, and it sort of marked the beginning of the more complex system implemented in the Ivalice Alliance games.

I tried my hand at modding the game too. It's easy enough to do texture replacements.

Good to see they're patching the issues.

I never realized the rng stuff is so bad in FF6 until I read about stealing and trying to learn some moves with Gau. Hope someone figure out a way to increase rare steals because it's basically really useless and the chances of you stealing useful equipment are low.

When I first played this game as a kid the game felt so much bigger and longer, now it feels like I got to Zozo in a day or two because I play video games a lot now, and a few hours game time isn't that much relatively.

I don't like scanlines usually but the dithering effect kind of helps a lot, things aren't as flat and it smooth out all the color banding/gradient/pixelation. Noticeable with round objects, like their head/hair.

FF V musings:

I wish there was a Cheat Table that will always trigger learnable skills for Blue Magic. That will save so much time. 100% bestiary collection is a bust already since I missed some in the 1-time visit only dungeons.

Ninja and Samurai's special abilities are broken though. It trivialises some of the boss fights. :flare_lmao:

Do you have an older save ? The bestiary collection is global, as long as you find it once it will count (doesn't even need to be in the same "playthrough")

Ok, from what I've seen of Pixel Remasters, they look really.. off.

And what's the general verdict on FF6 PR? Aside from QoL stuff, are they any downgrades to the original experience?

Most changes seem to be minor, but people did find quite a few bugs here and there. There are some odd design decisions like using the GBA color scheme for the worldmap tileset instead of the original snes ones and they look super bright compared to everything else in the game but there are mods for things like that.

Naruhodo. Would you mind to share the settings? I've messed with Royale myself but only had varying degrees of success. >_< To the point I wonder if my shader is broken or perhaps I downloaded the wrong one... :anguished-face:
I don't know how to save the settings, I tried saving and reloading that ini but it just revert to default lol, so I'll just screen cap it:

I have no idea what most of the settings are but I've only changed a few values, you can mess around with gamma and such or disable interlacing.

Man, world of ruin starts with my least used characters lol, i'm barely winning these early boss fights. Either this ver is tougher or I grinded a lot when I was a kid.

Finished with FF V last night. I enjoyed it. The final dungeon was super long, I thought I'm back playing a Trails game. :flare_lmao:

Typical of the games of the era, the antagonist was kind of one-note, but it's expected. I would've wanted to play with Tom Slattery's translation of the GBA version, but I guess the translation in the PR is serviceable enough.

Finally we can say goodbye to the four crystals as plot device! :flare_mogu:

Onwards to FF VI this afternoon. Already have a bunch of mods installed; Custom UI and SNES sprites, amongst other things.

So, I got to the Opera House scene in FF VI.

I have to admit, it was pretty good. Having played the GBA version with patched SNES music, the voiced lines sounded rather different than what I imagined, but I think Squeenix did a good job, overall.

Having said that, though. whatever happened to the map textures of the opera house balcony seats? I didn't recall the colours being so washed out. I'll have to play around with ReShade. Also, I had HDR activated which may have exacerbated the issue.

And for a bit of nostalgia, I might have to try this mod next.
