GreedFall releases September 2019 on PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC.

On the hunt for a cure to save your home continent from a devastating disease, you find yourself in the middle of ever-increasing tensions between the invading settlers and the local natives protected by supernatural Guardians, manifestation of the island’s magic.
You can progress and succeed in quests through a multitude of paths. Whether utilizing combat, diplomacy or deception, the way you reach your objectives depends on your choices and how you choose to develop your character. The island of GreedFall is a living, ever-evolving world. Your actions, from seemingly trivial choices to the most important political decisions, will influence its course and, ultimately, shape your story.

For me, they have the right amount of personality, "jank", and they don't overstay their welcome.

It's one of the few studios whose games are day one purchases/pre-orders for me, with no hesitation. (y)

There's still some jank, but it looks much better than I expected. They put some effort in animation it seems.

  • It's fully open world
  • You can bring 2 followers
  • You can setup a camp for resting & crafting
  • Lots of weapons & armors with various rarities
  • Each gear parts can be modified too which reminds me of DA Inquisition
  • Combat has lock-on & commitment to attacks but I didn't see a stamina system
  • You can activate tactical pause in combat for spells and abilities

Also, there's a lot of info from Czech, google translated. It's kind of old, but I just remember I saw this for a brief moment before.
  • Baroque / fantasy RPG inspired by the 17th century (and painters like Rembrandt).
  • the whole island is divided into 16 zones (large open maps) with different environments (inspired by Scotland, Ireland, Iceland). The environment is hilarious and stylized in autumn colors, but not for all locations.
  • Fireplaces allow you to travel quickly like Tomb Raider.

  • The name of the game is probably allusion to Silverfall, which was the RPG's first film by the founders of Spiders, and it has a major role in the fight against technology. Surprisingly, we will also encounter this issue in Greedfalle.

Like I mentioned before, I really like Spiders' games.
I know many people don't. Some say their games lack polish, have some poor mechanics and whatnot, and are somewhat lacking technically, and... I wouldn't really say they are wrong.

But, I find them quite charming.
The characters, the dialogues, the quests, they do things a bit outside of the usual for the genre. Some would say this is bad. For example, their dialogues frequently use more "modern" language, and cursing, and are as removed as you would expect from what you usually get in most medieval fantasy RPGs.
But, I call that having some personality. It's nice sometimes to play games that do things a bit differently. It's nice to play RPGs that don't go on for 100+ hours, and instead (mostly because they lack budget) go for a more streamlined, shorter experience.

Like I frequently say, Spiders make "B-movie" games.
Like 70's/80's exploitation genres, they try so hard to stick out, in a pool full of big studios and big productions, they frequently opt to go big on stupidity (in a good way). But, like genre cinema, I find them incredibly fun.

Spider’s inspirations for GreedFall
Countless books, movies and tv shows were studied by the whole team to create this new universe! Camille Lallement, Lead Cinematic Artist, also claims the team wanted to explore current issues, as well as some older ones that we may otherwise like to collectively forget. Key inspirations include the Miyazaki classic Princess Mononoke (1997). The animated film was one of the first references when designing the natives living on the Island of Teer Fradee. It also pushed the team to start considering ecology as one of the native’s greatest motives.

The main draw to me is that this is an indie game with an AAA look.

But that's about it. Doesn't seem to be a character design or art direction or anything that compels me. I'm looking for something unique, and that is certainly not how I would describe Greedfall.

As this gameplay shows, the wilderness of GreedFall is home to many strange and dangerous creatures, especially after dark - but there are more ways than one to overcome them. Experiment when selecting your skills and branch out into firearms, magic, alchemy, and more!

Scattered around the many open areas of GreedFall, you’ll find a variety of places to set up camp. There, you can access your workbench to deeply customize your equipment, switching out parts to change up both the look and stats of your gear. Campsites are also a great opportunity to catch up with your companions and get to know them better. Your life may depend on it.

Have a PC review copy. Performance is kind of stuttery in the initial city area (framerate overall ranges from 80-100 FPS in that area on max settings with a GTX1080), but might be my drivers are outdated and there's definitely jank which I understand considering the budget.
Looks like the game is not taxing on PC, but there's a stuttering issue.
