Well, that's the nature of the game, any game with replayable levels that then had a level as demo would have that effect :p
Yeah, but think of the game as a "platform" with a number of different locations.
Each location grants you access not only to the story mission, but also unlocks, challenges, time-limited events, and you can create missions and access all user created content based on that location.

So, with this, they are essentially giving you the first location, without limitations. Unlike what we usually get with a regular demo, this allows you to access all content based on this location, and your overall progress and unlocks are saved.
If you get the rest of the game (or if you buy the previous game, or the legacy DLC, either granting you access to all locations from the previous season), you get the rest of the locations.
But, you can simply continue to grow your character just by doing content on the location you have access to, and even enjoying events (for example, on March 8 users with access to New Zealand will be able to play the upcoming Elusive Target).

Still a demo to me but yes it's cool they didn't put more restrictions to it and it has all you can do in the full game in the first area :)

Like back when SEGA gave out the first of 4 Panzer Dragoon Saga discs as a demo!

Yeah... this game isn't for me.
What was it that you didn't like?

The New Zealand map is actually a lot smaller, and a lot more restrictive than the rest of the maps.
In the main game you are usually dropped in a big map, and you have a lot more freedom to do as you please, changing disguises, following up on opportunities to infiltrate places and impersonate other people, and use all kinds of methods to dispose of your targets.

The part where I had to have patience. As soon as someone blew my cover I just started to shoot everyone with my shotgun.

Yeah, the ideal way of going through a map is to kill just the intended target. ;)

But seriously, give the series a try again in the future. Sometimes you just have to be in the right mood.
The first time I played the demo of the first Hitman (the original game from 2000), my reaction was not unlike yours. Stealth? What's that? Nah, I'll just run around and shoot at everybody. :p
But after that, things started to click.

If you didn't already, make a lot of use of the key to use "instinct". It allows you to see where your targets are, and who can see through your current disguise.
It helps a lot.

I still argue that the first mission in Hitman 2 isn't that great and doesn't sell the concept nearly as well as the prologue to Hitman 2016 does. Since that's also free if you're entirely new to the series I suggest you give that "demo" a shot as well as it feels more similar to the rest of the levels.

I think the most important aspect that's different is in Hitman 2 the prologue everyone is an enemy so you can't be seen by anyone. In the previous game there's more standard NPCs instead of just military-esque people so there's more to blending in and just seeing the world react. Also, they just felt more open whereas this prologue level is very directed, despite being open in design. Maybe it's because the actual building is so small and the rest is just open outside beach area?

Anyhow, Hitman 2 is still one of the best games of last year so everyone should give it a shot but I just don't think this sells it well.

Nice! Now I got starter pack. Is Hawke's Bay the first mission of the game? I guess I don't need to play Hitman 2016 anymore.
Now gotta find the time to play Hitman :p

Well, you should play Hitman 2016 if you have the chance, because it has some great locations (Sapienza, Paris, ...), and some of the events and elusive targets still take place in the legacy maps.
Well actually, if you own the previous game, just install the Hitman 2 prologue/starter edition, the maps of the first game will be imported to the second game if you own it, and you can play them there with the improvements done for the new game.

I do have the first game. Too bad that I started playing it before knowing about legacy content in Hitman 2. Already unlocked some achievements, which means lowering my achievement completion rate

I can't help with you the achievements part, but I just wanted to point out that the QOL improvements done on the legacy maps on the second game make it a more polished, fun experience. It's worth it.
And, your progress and unlockables on 1 don't count towards 2 (while playing on the legacy maps of Hitman 2 does), and while you are going through the first game, you are probably missing events and time-limited/seasonal unlocks on 2.

You can always try to finish the first game in a hurry, and replay the maps on 2. ;)

A reminder that there's a new elusive target, and that everyone with the free starter pack can try it, since it's in that location (New Zealand).

Already done it, once again with a silent assassin rating. :giggle:
It took a hour or so of retries, until I finally executed my plan flawlessly, but in my defence it was 2 weeks since I last played the game, so I was a bit rusty. ;)

So, anyone else doing these events and elusive targets?
I'm the only one with a ranking on my friends list, so it seems not many are doing them. It's a shame, since these are always a lot of fun.

I did the elusive target yesterday. I've never been one for silent assassin ratings but I decided I'd try more and pulled it off in Sgail. After resetting a couple times finding a good method to get indoors I cleaned up the house nicely and was outside on my way to the exit when a body was found. I'm trying to learn how they do NPC behavior as there was nobody that was on a path that would have spotted the one body I left out. I purposely put it around a corner where it wouldn't be close to visible. But I had already done the kill so I just had to accept it.

I'm guessing that if it's a posted guard they must send a newly spawned NPC to take their place if they're gone for too long? It had been maybe ten minutes since I had taken out the one guard in the surveillance room and that's where I had stashed the bodyguard's body. Nobody else should have gone in there to see him. In the future I'll just be extra cautious. This isn't the first time I've had a body found when playing in a location that shouldn't have anybody passing by so I have to think it's something like guard replenishments for specific guards?

Thanks for the heads up!

I really ought to get Hitman 2 + Legacy. Stealth in Hitman feels right. It doesn't feel like a chore even considering I'm somewhat of an impatient gamer nowadays.

Sorry for bumping this thread, but the free Miami Pack, which gives access to the first "proper" Hitman 2 map/mission, should be up on Steam any moment now.
The first Hitman 2 elusive target is also returning, for those who missed it:

Those who played the Hawke's Bay prologue may want to give this map a try, especially since it's free, because it's more representative of the scale of the game, and the freedom it provides for you to complete the goals as you see fit.

Ops, it appears the pack is not free. I misread.

I'm pretty sure this is $15. Only the Hawke's Bay continues to be the free pack. The news for the Miami Pack simply notes that for $15 you get both levels because Hawke's Bay is free for everyone.
