Gods & Monsters sets players loose in a vibrant, colorful open world as Fenyx, a forgotten hero who receives a quest from Zeus: save the Greek gods from Typhon, one of mythology's most terrifying monsters. Fenyx is fast, agile, and strong, able to wield gifts from the gods to fight impossible aerial battles against the likes of harpies and gorgons. Fenyx is also whoever the player wants them to be. A fully customizable player-created character, Fenyx springs from the magical storytelling lyre of the legendary poet Homer, who narrates the story of Gods & Monsters as a campfire tale for his grandchildren.

Gods & Monsters is being created by the same team behind Assassin's Creed Odyssey, and while the two games share some similarities – they're both open-world adventures centered on an acrobatic Greek hero, for example – it's already clear that they're very different experiences. For starters, Fenyx can chop down trees, lift the fallen trunks into the air with telekinesis, and hurl them into the distance.
"It is lighthearted," says Creative Director Jonathan Dumont. "Homer is telling this story, but his grandkids are interrupting and asking questions along the way. Mythology has a good sense of humor, oftentimes, so there are certain instances where we like to poke fun at things. You can expect a different approach for how the story is told, but a similar tone to what we've done in the past."

We've seen a brief sample of Gods & Monsters' gameplay – running smoothly on a Pixel phone through the Stadia app – and even on the small screen, Fenyx's adventure on the Isle of the Blessed looks impressive. From high atop a grassy cliff, it's possible to see vast stretches of the island, a sprawling expanse of hills, valleys, waterways, and ruins stretching out toward the sea. Fenyx moves quickly, running and jumping across the hilly landscape with a springy agility, and when they jump off a cliff, they can immediately summon and hang from a fiery phoenix, gliding safely down to an open plain below. And once on the ground, Fenyx can summon an equally fiery horse to race across the game's picturesque, painterly fields.
Speed and verticality also play big roles in Gods & Monsters' over-the-top combat, with Fenyx leaping straight at flying harpies and smacking them out of the sky with midair slash combos. Fenyx also has a range of special abilities that come in handy both in and out of fights, including a dash, a double jump, a whirlwind slash, a chameleon stealth ability, and a big ol' kick that can send enemies flying.

"When you're fighting and trigger your abilities, you're going to wreck the enemies you're facing, and free them from the corruption they're under," says Dumont. "You can expect a fast-paced type of combat that takes place on the ground and the air. For example, if you're fighting a cyclops, you may have to double jump to reach his head and hit him in the eye to blind him, so then you can fight him on the ground."
All of these abilities – along with jumping, attacking, climbing, and gliding – drain Fenyx's stamina gauge. So while Fenyx can scale just about anything, doing so can be dangerous; run out of stamina while free climbing, and you'll fall and possibly die. Your stamina meter can be upgraded, but in the meantime, exploration is sometimes a matter of weighing risk against reward. That said, there won't be a lot of complex systems for players to learn. Wide-open and filled with puzzles, dungeons, and epic quests, Gods & Monsters is meant to be fast, fun, and accessible to anyone.

"We send you into this open world and try to make sure that the journey is as interesting, challenging, and rewarding as the destination," says Dumont. "It's really about losing yourself into this world that offers a variety of gameplay through combat, puzzles, and traversal. I like that it is approachable and has a feeling of an uplifting adventure for everyone playing it. We're telling a cool story, teaching people about myths, and doing it in an uplifting way"

So this is action/adventure?

Hmm. This sounds a lot like Breath of the Wild or is it just me?

What was cool about diving into a setting like we did with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was that you start to know quite a bit about it,” said Jonathan Dumont, creative director on Gods and Monsters, in an interview on the Ubisoft blog. “We really connected with the mythological aspects of ancient Greece. The gods, the monsters, the legends, the myths are all great, but building an Assassin’s Creed game limits what you can tap into. During production, we started thinking, ‘what if we made something that’s 100% mythology?’ We could make a dramatically different game than we did before.”

Like Odyssey, Gods and Monsters features an open world, although unlike Odyssey, mythological creatures like harpies and cyclopes run rampant. We haven’t seen any gameplay yet, but Dumont describes Gods and Monsters’ combat as fast-paced, taking place on both the ground and in the air. Odyssey had a deluge of special abilities, and Dumont says for this game, the team has taken those abilities and “put them on steroids.”

“When you’re fighting and you trigger your abilities, you’re going to wreck the enemies you’re facing,” Dumont said.

In addition to special abilities, you’ll need to leverage gear and magical items in combat, too. Dumont teases the Boots of Hermes, a magical item that allows players to double-jump, which is good for striking cyclopes in the eyes, or reaching high places more easily. He’s tight-lipped on other magical items players can expect though (but throwing some of Zeus’ lightning bolts would be pretty sweet).

Cyclopes are only one type of mythological creature you’ll face in Gods and Monsters. The game’s Big Bad is Typhon, who’s held as the most fearsome monster in Greek myth. In legend, Typhon has a head of snakes, the torso of a man, and wings. He can also breathe fire, because why not.

“I’m not going to talk too much about his motivations right now,” Dumont said. “It’s tied closely to the storyline, but if you read up on Greek myths, you’ll find out he’s one of Zeus’ biggest foes. He is also supported by a huge cast of other monsters.”

“I think starting with a blank page is very exciting for us as a team,” said Senior Producer Marc-Alexis Côté. “Bringing our open-world skills that we’ve been honing for the last 10 years working on Assassin’s Creed, and having the chance to work on this blank page to create something new and fresh, is very exciting for me and this team. We’re all very excited about creating this new game, this new IP, and we’re giving it everything they can to make this the best possible game.”

It looks like a neat Zelda clone, and apparently the progression systems are not complete poopoo.

But the game is just bland, from artstyle to UI and combat... they really needed a stronger identity than they have. Feels like Kingdoms of Amalur all over again.

I've played this for one week straight back in november. Changes have been made narrative wise, the addition of the wings and that blue "health bar" ?

Looks more platformy which is exactly what was needed since some of the vaults are straight up demented platforming shit straight out of Recore, and I mean it in the best possible way. What put this game apart from the rest is the combat and the verticality, for example you can use the spear skill propelling you in the air multiple times in a row if you got the stamina for it and this opens up a lot of ways to actually use the environment around you

There's also a "lite" nemesis system and classical upgrade shit. However when I did play the physics were beyond horrible, looks like its fixed but knowing how empty the map is and all of that I don't think I'll buy it. Its pretty much an open world puzzle game without any town to find or npc to talk to

Yeah, this is definitely an interesting project coming from Ubisoft. It has most of the perks of BotW but with better combat. But as Sygmaelle stated above, the lack of towns and NPCs would immensely bring the game down for me.

Honestly, I think it's too close to BotW that I'd rather just play that game again.

I imagine since this is an Ubisoft game, they will do something to fuck it up like MTX or a million different pre-order editions.

Interestingly, I thought only the general appearance and traversal is reminiscent of Botw, others not so much. The combat is completely different and it has more RPG elements than Botw. Tbh, I expect more Botw clones / inspired games will be released soon and this one seems to be a pretty good take of this style of open world games.

Hopefully they don't add any MTX bullshit into it.

I just noticed they literally removed the stamina wheel lol, maybe its the thing on the left of the Fenyx. The traversal in this game is what sets it apart from so many other open worlds because its fluid and theres a crapton of verticality being used. As far as the combat having more rpg elements, its not exactly true : each weapon / power has a distinct use and if I had to describe it its a mash up of Automata and God of War, its also really satisfying to play

Then again I also found that the shrines in this and in particular the gods dungeons were much better on the regular than any of them in Botw, (who liked the divine beasts, serious question) ESPECIALLY the platforming ones which are a joy to run through if you're into old school punishing 3D platforming

There's a lot of interesting mechanics but yeah, its still an open world puzzle game first and foremost, so if you don't like solving puzzles as the very defining feature of it all, needless to say you'll get bored quickly

There was a shop in the version I played and also questions about MTX, I honestly went off because it was some unacceptable bullshit. basically they were selling costumes and ressources to upgrade everything faster

supposedly this is the ac odyssey team's game? kinda interesting. i never played that one but it's nice they got to try something different if that's the case.

last ubi-style 5000 things to do on the map game i played was division 2 so i'm about due for another one. i spent about 100 hours on botw's "empty" map so if this is even half as engaging i'll be set.

I really hope it doesn't follow the UbiFactory style of game because after watching some oft the gameplay footage and trailers it looks fun. Of course it's open world and ubisoft, so it's probably the same stale formula with a cartoonier coat of paint

At first, I thought it so uninspired and janky looking, but for some reason it’s been on my mind since yesterday. I could see myself picking this up cheap in a few years for some mindless play.

 good lord

real talk though, a remake or redo of far cry 2 would be kinda cool. that game had some neat stuff going on with it (weapon and vehicle degredation, malaria stuff, wildlife interaction, fire spread) but was pretty jank at the time.

Ok, after giggling at the change of title and kind of ignoring the game for the last few months, i'm kinda tempted to get this.
I have a metric fuckton of games to play and Cyberpunk 2077 next week but i fancy something like this as a palette cleanser from the games i've been playing recently.

Hmmm, Switch or PC? I can wait a day or two before deciding to go for it or not but i am tempted by a Ubi game for the first time in absolutely ages.

This game really suffers from the horrible story presentation. Graphics are good, the combat and abilities feel good to use, and the world design is quality BOTW clone stuff.

But the goofy "funny" villain and "humorous" tone? The framing as a story told by prometheus with that horrible voice over? The annoying main character? What were they thinking with all of this. The good parts of the game are wasted, because the experience as a whole is kind of insufferable. What a shame ...
