Like a Dragon: Ishin! That's a JRPG right?

I'm curious about Suikoden 1 & 2 so maybe that, hopefully it aged well. I already bought One Piece Odyssey but I haven't been in the mood to play it for some reason, despite the fact I actually liked the premise so far with the game/story.

FFXVI would require me to buy a PS5, still thinking about that one.

Added. Also noted FF16 for PS5. Honestly the game doesn't grab me at all so totally forgot that it is not going to launch on PC simultaneously. :face-with-stuck-out-tongue:

Currently knee deep in P3P.

Will be playing Wo Long after I'm done but that is more action I guess.

With the Deck I'm always looking to play older stuff or stuff I missed out recently. So I will probably buy some JRPGs this summer sale. Maybe give TiTS a try as I've still haven't played those games. People here have said many good things about all the Trails games.

Hopefully ATLUS puts out more stuff on Steam this year like SMTV. I skipped Soul Hackers 2 because it had mediocre reviews but if ATLUS does a rerelease of it somehow to enhance it down the line I would consider getting it.

Other than that I want to see good discounts on some Square stuff like Dragon Quest Builders 2. I have have the first on PS4 but never launched it.

Time permitted I want to continue with the Tales series too and Zestiria will be the next one I play.

Also Octopath Traveler seems like a good one to get into now that there is a sequel coming. So hope for a good deals on all this stuff later in the year or even better if some of this stuff dropped on Humble Choice ;)

Sky, Zero and Azure are all excellent games!

I've gotten P3P, but I have no Idea when I'll get around to it, I'll most likely do a FeMC since I never played portable.
Will get Trails to Azure (so I can finally remove the patched version) and I'll get Trails into Reverie (at some point).

Always been intrigued by Suikoken so I'll probably get them.

And once I've gotten around the Yakuza/Like A Dragon games that I have left I'll get Ishin. The rest we'll see.

I'll be getting Digimon this month. Then Trails to Azure in March. After that I'll finally jump into Cold Steel 3 & 4, whenever the next good sale afterwards happens. After that would be Trails into Reverie, but I may or may not still be busy with the previous games at that point (or maybe need a bit of a break), so I suspect I will pick it up towards the end of the year.
Also really looking forward to Honkai: Star Rail. It doesn't have a concrete date yet, but there's a good chance it will release in a few months.

I'm looking forward to Eiyuden, though I'm not convinced that it will actually release this year.

Talking about JRPGs, yesterday I started playing Valkyrie Profile 2: Silmeria (in coop, and with an AI texture pack).
I'm not usually one for the "genre X used to be so much better" narrative, but having recently finished FF7R it's hard not to fall into that line of thinking to some extent.
  • Perhaps most crucially, the first real dungeon in VP2 is already more interesting than all but 1 dungeon in the entirety of FF7R.
  • The battle system is innovative, fast but precise, and gives you lots of options. To be fair, the battle system is probably the highlight of FF7R, and it's pretty good too... but I think VP2's might actually be more interesting.
  • VP2 starts in media res -- and to some extent, so does FF7R -- but the action and story in the former is paced consistently well so far, rather than having the feeling of "and now we need some side quests because that's just what you do".
  • The itemization and equipment system in VP2 is more interesting. FF7R is very fancy aesthetically, but under the shiny veneer there's not all that much you can do.
And that's comparing one of many PS2 JRPGs against an exceedingly-high-budget remake which was built on the foundation of one of the most highly acclaimed JRPGs ever, and which was really not badly made. I think PS2 was probably the last platform where top-tier publishers like Square-Enix would innovate like that in the JRPG genre, in something that's not just an indie-budget-tier experiment.

Modern high-budget (or relatively high budget, otherwise there's just FF left) like the aforementioned FF, but also e.g. Tales of Arise, just seem very "safe" in their design, comparatively. I feel like the interesting B-A budget tier that VP2 represents mostly fell out of the market, leaving just the relatively bland on top, and the low-budget but more experimental and often interesting stuff below it. And then there are a few companies that hold on to that B-A level with pretty good games, but they mostly do so by sticking to their core franchises, and the also can't afford to experiment too much and need to churn out their core content frequently (i.e. that's basically the Falcom / Gust approach).

Reverie and the Suikoden remasters(i've never played them) are day 1 buys for me and I already bought and finished Fire Emblem this year

the Baten Kaitos remasters would have been a day 1 buy for me(already played those way back but have a lot of nostalgia for them) but apparently they removed the english dub from those which made my interest in them way lower

I have some level of interest in Galleria, Octopath, Sea of Stars, and Eiyuden but whether that ever translates into anything will depend on my mood, how they turn out etc

there's also the Xenoblade 3 dlc expansion releasing this year that i'm looking forward to which will be around 20-30 hours long so it's basically a game in and of itself
