Welcome to the second PC Gaming MetaCouncil GOTY (Games of the Year) awards! The main award focuses on PC games which we deem GOTY worthy. This year, it was also possible to vote for the best Ongoing game, as well as the best Early Access game, the best VR game, and the most disappointing game in a separate category. So, sit back and relax while you check out the results.

Previous year's GOTY results: 2018.

NB: The results for the Games of the Decade 2010-2019 (GOTD) are available in another thread.

  • Voting took place in the monthly MetaCouncil Thread.
  • Voting was open from January 4th - January 18th.
  • Up to 5 games were allowed for each person to pick for GOTY.
  • Games of the Year had to be released on PC in 2019.
  • Ongoing, Early Access, VR and Turd were given separate, optional ballots.
  • Overall the poll turnout was: 65.
  • One game was removed from scoring for not meeting requirements: it was released in 2018.
  • 100 games were represented in the GOTY category.
  • There were 25 Ongoing games, 12 Early Access titles, 6 VR games and 19 candidates for the Turd award.
  • The ranking results from ranked voting without point.
  • There are ties but there is no tie-breaker.
  • Wok was allowed to vote in this poll.

Here are the top 10 Games of the Year!

I never thought we'd get anything that could top Planescape: Torment, yet Disco Elysium does that and so much more. Best RPG I've played in decades.
QFNS said:
Disco Elysium is the kind of game that isn't supposed to exist anymore. Gorgeous pre-rendered backgrounds, sublime writing, and a fully formed story this game is a true delight. Well it is sort of depressing, but that's part of it's charm. It's Disco baby.
Flips said:
By far the best game I've played in 2019 and one of the best of the last decade. I'd even go so far and say it's the game with the best writing out there. It manages to be funny as hell or fucking depressing, plain stupid or super intelligent.
fantomena said:
I started playing it without any expectations, so that might have helped. I found the game gorgeus and the writing absolutely genius. Something about the game instantly clicked for me and I just love it.
Mivey said:
Wake up, get drunk, some solve crimes, then get even more drunk and start a magical adventure about finding invisible bugs.
Taborcarn said:
Such a revolutionary game, great writing and brings new life to the CRPG genre
daxy said:
The quality of its writing, world-building and the game's atmosphere are absolutely phenomenal. It's one of the very few games where I wanted to take it slow and really process the world and the tensions at play therein before moving on through the critical path. The interplay between its role-playing systems, the development of your character's personality and how this all expressed itself in the way you interacted with the game's characters and world was also very engaging. Almost every choice in your character sheet felt actually meaningful. Just all-around a great achievement in game design.
eonden said:
Disco Elysium feel like a great role play campaign with a great DM. Every single small decision will have impact in the development of your character and the game is smart enough to have different reactions depending on his thoughts. This game will probably have a huge impact on the focus of story telling and character development for years to come.
Kyougar said:
A passion project which completely abandons fighting gameplay to fully embrace the narrative options in an RPG
NeuralProxy said:
Brilliant concept and fantastic execution. Thanks to its brilliant writing, original characters, interesting world and great art, Disco Elysium really is one of the best PC games ever.
lazerfox said:
Disco Elysium has perhaps the best writing I've ever seen in any video game. The outstanding writing and the complex skill system makes this such a unique experience unlike anything we've seen before. And most importantly, the incredibly witty dialog made me laugh multiple times.
AHA-Lambda said:
One of the most well written and enthralling games I've played in as many years as I can think of, and one which always surprised in its absurdity. It simply had me completely hooked from beginning to end.
kafiend said:
I don't even own it (yet) but just seeing the way people talk about it makes it GOTY.
xinek said:
Outstanding narrative mixing humor, sarcasm, parody, introspection, and character development. This is the kind of experience that pushes games forward as one of the most innovative and engrossing forms of media and a kind of experience you can't get anywhere else.
m_dorian said:
A challenge of the senses which dethrones Planescape: Torment as best narrative.
Monooboe said:
This is one of those games that gets closer and closer to what I want games to be. I want games that deal with mature matters and do it like they care.
Big McLargehuge said:
I don't buy many games at launch nowadays, but as soon as I read about this game, I knew it would be one I would enjoy. Disco Elysium is a triumph in terms of writing and storytelling in video games. At times, the game had me laughing at its witty and sometimes dark humor. Other times, I was deeply engrossed in one of the many optional but deep conversations. Normally, a game would need a combat system to keep me engaged, but this game’s plot and characters kept me enthralled until the end. This game deserves all the praise it has received and I hope the developers continue to create more fantastic narratives such as this.
Durante said:
It's the most interesting take on the genre (whatever the genre is) that I've played in years.
Ibuki said:
Fantastic writing and interesting choice and consequence make this one of the best CRPGs I have ever played.
prudis said:
Disco Elysium is something special. RPG/Adventure game with absolutely astonishing writing and unique/fresh character system.

Derrick01 said:
I can't think of another game this year that had the gameplay heights that Sekiro provided. It's a difficult game and even more difficult to master the combat but when it did click I felt like I was playing out an action movie fight scene in real time. There were other great moments this year but for me nothing tops the feeling those fights gave me.
yuraya said:
From decided to do something a little bit different and they absolutely nailed it. One of the best and most precise action games I've ever played.
Gevin said:
Though to learn and even harder to master, but incredibly satisfying once you do
xxr said:
A brutal and unforgiving adventure but incredibly rewarding as you learn and master the different enemies you face. The gameplay is more satisfying than ever and the combined narrative and world-building makes for an incredibly memorable experience. Might be my all-time favorite by FROM!
Parsnip said:
Sekiro's grappling hook just feels so good.
PC-tan said:
It was one of the few games that I actually completed and didn't drop

TioChuck said:
Improved in everyway possible, still surprisingly faithful to the original, the love and respect used to make this game transpires on the final product.
Joe Spangle said:
An excellent remake with terrific atmosphere, controls and story.
Wibblewozzer said:
Resident Evil 2 surpassed my expectations. I played the original but don't have fond memories like everyone else so I was reluctant to jump into this remake and had largely ignored all media. But the reviews and word of mouth after release made me decide I should just give it a shot and I was enthralled immediately. I did Claire A first (the best path) and it felt complete by the end. There was a lot of back and forth about the alternate paths just being a rehash but the next day I figured I'd start up Leon B just to see and I ended up playing through the whole thing in one session. It doesn't do anything groundbreaking, but what it does do is done with care and precision not seen in many games.
Dragon1893 said:
An incredible remake of a real classic, RE2 sets the bar for how remakes should be done.
BO7AMMOOD said:
If you had told me that Resident Evil 2 would get a remake in 2019 that would modernize the game yet still keep its survival horror roots I would never have believed you! Even though I was sad at first to see the game shed its iconic fixed camera angle, I was very pleasantly surprised to see that the camera change was the one and only big change to occur in this remake. Masterful game design ensured that Zombies, Lickers, Mr. X and the rest of the horrors that await you deep under RCPD are as terrifying and challenging as they've every been. Playing this game masterpiece with the classic soundtrack makes for a ridiculously good nostalgia trip! Easily my favorite game of the year and one of the best in recent history even!

uraizen said:
This game is possibly the pinnacle of all action games to this day. Itsuno comes back full force and basically says ""this is how you make an action game."" Three different characters with completely different play styles, a great soundtrack, really good graphics, and plenty of replayability.

Panda Pedinte said:
It's the best igavania that was released in 2019.

MJunioR said:
Red Dead Redemption 2 is a return to form for Rockstar. With an incredible story and a great cast of characters, RDR2 living world feels great to explore, and the story as well side-missions and stranger encounters I simply couldn't stop playing it.
freshVeggie said:
Rockstar elevates their second jab at the Western genre with great writing, excellent world-building and memorable & believable characters. A never-before-seen attention to detail leaves you in awe even if it comes at a cost of easy gameplay. Nonetheless, one of the best games Rockstar has ever produced and a milestone in immersive game experience.

d00d3n said:
Many aspects of the game are unrefined, such as the simplistic combat, the generic art style and the inconsequential story. All of those things should bother me, but the genre mashup offered is kind of irresistible: a 3d puzzle game with a lot of exploration, some combat and a metroidvania style progression system. Sounds like a nightmare to fuse all of those components together, but this game somehow succeeds. The puzzles themselves start out trivial, but there are some intensely pleasurable eureka moments to be had down the line. Many 3d puzzle games make you feel like a menial worker in a Rube Goldberg machine factory, but this game is more about understanding the exact properties of your gear and machines/materials in the world, which meshes really well with the metroidvania progression. I think this may be the best game I have played this year.
BlackRainbowFT said:
This is the best metroidvania I've played in ages. The gameplay and the pace are top-notch, the exploration is consistently rewarding and the humor is great!

A Plague Tale: Innocence is a captivating story set in a harrowing world. As Amicia, you have to protect your brother Hugo from the Inquisition and swarms of plague rats, all out to get you. Sneaking your way through the beautiful and sometimes terrifying scenery of Southern France in the 14th century during the plague, you team up with likeable characters and overcome unrelenting foes. Its a story that grabs you and doesnt let go, but does not outstay its welcome. A Plague Tale: Innocence is a masterpiece in videogame storytelling.

I don't think it means all 100 were someones GOTY, all those 63 placed were last on someones list.
Sure, but they were included in the list to begin with, so someone thought they were good enough to be in their GOTY list (that's hopefully worded better)

Thanks Wok for your great work. :)

I am one of them who did not know they could vote for Tim's Store and i voted for Anthem. I consider them both as winners of their category.

Terrific work, thank you very much, Wok!

A nice set of results, those - plenty of great titles in the mix, and some great variety. Very pleased to see a title of Disco Elysium's ilk garner so much admiration. Thanks to everyone who voted and contributed!

I'm yet to play any of the top 10 games (my best of the year came in 11th), so personally there's much to look forward to playing... eventually!

I'm happy Disco Elysium won, it really was the surprise hit of the year for me.
i would say it was surprise hit for all of us ... like i was pretty well aware of it even from days it was called No Truce with Furies .... but i dont think anyone really expected it to be that good from pretty much unknown team

I remember hearing about it from the Codex and they were like "yeah it's good" but it was an Age of Decadence-good from the way they sounded. Nice but possibly very subjective and niche. Still, the detective concept and all seemed quite appealing.

Then it released and oh my.

Thanks for this! Fun read. I'm guessing Fallen Order ended up making the the list despite nobody having it in no 1. That's pretty interesting,
Also seems like more than 1 person put Kind Words on their list, which is cool :)
