WELCOME!
Hiya MC! :heroblob:

MMOs are such a big part of PC gaming, and I've noticed that we haven't had an official MMOs thread in here. That needs to change. So here we are, post away your screenshots, news, updates, impressions and experience regarding MMOs (and not so MMOs) in here. I've put together some of the most popular ones available in the market right now. So if you have any recommendations and reviews of MMOs you've played or have been playing, please do post them here and I'll put them in the OP. :highfiveblob:

I wonder how many here are gonna go back and play World of Warcraft Classic. All of the friends I had playing in 2004 or coming back for a nostalgia trip. I never thought I would ever want to return to WoW, but all the twitch streams of the beta make me want this game now.

Ugh...I've been playing WOW since 2004. I ain't ever going back to Vanilla. Ain't nothing gonna make me spend an entire weekend farming up Briarthorn in Westfall just so I can buy my NORMAL riding at 40. Never. Again.

One of the reasons i abandoned Bioware's SW MMO was their business model.
SWTOR sold quickbars. Effin quickbars.
And yet they have not shame when they are saying they ll add 1 for free to freeps.

Yet the worst bussiness model a F2P MMO has is on Star Trek Online. It is a fun game when you are not doing land quests (space combat is/was good) but the lockboxes pay to win system drove me away very quickly.

I haven't played an MMO in quite a few years, but I'm excited for WoW Classic. I left WoW right before Cataclysm was released. I raided very competitively back then for world/server firsts as a Disc priest and loved it. I think I left at a good point though, and the changes they've made to the game since then have only soured my interests. My plans for Classic are to calmly enjoy the leveling process, engage in the social aspect. and do some World PvP.

As i 've said in other threads, All this talk of WOW Classic and StormBringers has me wanting to try an MMO again. Usually i walk away but i think this time i'm going to give FFXIV a try. I'm totally inexperienced with actually playing an MMO aside from a few months on STO a long time ago so it's going to be quite a learning experience for me but i've always wanted to find a game that enthralls me for a long time while i skip about my regular games and i want to do something with a chance of me taking part in a community when i get myself sorted and confident in game.

Should probably note FFXIV is down for maintenance until tomorrow because of Shadowbringers, So if you're interested in playing you might have to wait a bit lol

Yeah, i also figured it'd be a while because servers will be marked 'congested' to spread the new influx of players around.
I still want to buy it today in case i miss out on the 57% off deal currently available.

Hmm, I'm in trouble. You have finally succeeded in making me consider restarting FF14.
And now I'm looking into Secret World and TESO. Send halp !

Anecdotally, Secret World is my most loved game I didn't play. Sorta. I played during the beta, absolutely entranced. Then I replayed during the second beta, same. Then I played at launch and lost interest. Turns out playing the same zone again and again takes a little from enjoyment :-X
Didn't help that the second zone, while having some really good missions, was not on oar with the first. The hell beach was so typical MMO that I must have hurt my eyes rolling them so hard.

Have i missed something or are the instructions for registering and logging in to an MMO complete junk?
Does anyone have a step-by-step guide on how to go from having a Square Store Account with an Activation Code to actually launching the game or is it hosed because of maintainence and i'm SOL until tomorrow sometime?

edit: I'm slowly putting this puzzle together... slowly. Step by step we get closer.

Edit 2 - Putting out the Dumpster Fire: The Story So Far...
We start with nothing, lebowski, nothing.
You need a PC/Mac, a phone and an email account.

SE Store UK - Square Enix Store
SE Accounts/Mog Station - Please wait ...

Go Square Store, create Square Enix Store Account, buy game on Square Enix Store, download launcher, Get Registration Code for game.
Go Mog Station, create Square Enix Game Account, login to Mog stattion with Square Enix Game Account,
Once in Mog station, Click "Add New Service Account", enter Registration Code from Store, tick "Accept User Agreement", click Next, Bonus Stuff, Click Next, Done!, click Return to Account.

Download FFXIV Setup and run it to install the FFXIV Launcher
Open FFXIV launcher
type Square Enix Game Account ID
type password

Now the fun begins - Setting up One Time Password (OTP)
You need a phone and Square Enix Software Token app here

Login to SE Accounts/Mog Station - Please wait ...
"Services and Options" menu
"One Time Password"
Enter Security Question and Answer
Click Accept and Send email
Open email and get 20 digit code

Open SE Software Token app
Type Square Enix Game Account ID
Type birthday as YYMMDD
Type 20 digit code from the email above
It'll say when it registers successfully,
then it paused a while for me...
then returned to the app screen.

Check your email for the Serial Number for the Software Token
Token Uage Status in SE Accounts page should give you matching details too

On the app click "One time Password"
Enter the code into the launcher
Accept EULA and it should start downloading things.

If that lot helps one person then my time on this Earth will not have been wasted.

Can't help not thinking the Secret World was a game on the wrong genre. I loved many of it's quests and missions so much and i feel sad they have gone wasted by being misused.

I had some 4 months of great time in FF14 Heavensward playing in US servers back in 2015 and i was thinking of starting anew on an EU one but i am scared of the grind.
The same applies to WoW 8.2 and as much as i want to get the Bee mount, something inside my head reminds me that i had a lousy time with BfA and i probably won't enjoy returning.
So i am saving my self for when the Classic hits. Can't wait farming Mithril and Thorium again to pay for the riding license or being dismounted every time i cross a stream without jumping lol.

omg, yes! that game would've been SO MUCH BETTER as a single-player action RPG (maybe with optional co-op or something) ....

i seriously hope they're at least considering rebooting it again as exactly that after the current reboot dies off completely ... because there's just SO MUCH great writing and world building in there ... it's just insane how great the writing and quests in that game are

I logged back in to my Guild Wars 2 account, and I'm kinda lost on what to do lol.

So I ended up creating a new character to try out the new Revenant class, and boost her to level 80. That was a huge mistake. :neutral-face:

They lost several key members of the creative team AFAIR, not sure this hypothetical game would be on par.

they pretty much already have most of it done ... just replace the combat with a non-mmo one (and add controller support, for fuck's sake! people have been asking for this since the game released) ... and you're done :p

Yeah but they need people to continue writing the wonderful lore, and in this department they took a beating. Tornquist is the most prominent one, but browsing Massively yesterday while toying with the idea of playing MMOs (cry for help !) it seems that Funcom has lost at least two other creative people since then. You gotta wonder what would results of this solo game with Funcom 2019 at the helm, at least on the writing front.

By the way I can't disagree with you here. TSW is a gigantic wasted opportunity. It came at the end of the MMO craze and its lore is so good that it can't help but frustrate solo gamers. I told yesterday that it was the fact that I played the two betas that made me burnout on the game, but that's not the whole story.
You can totally, at least that's what I did, play the game solo, immerse yourself in the lore of the first zone and it reaches its climax in... a fucking multiplayer dungeon ! :disapproval-blob:

That's where I quit at launch, I think. It's a shame, because I loved the world they created, but the awful character models, animations, and combat really dragged it down. (And the fact that the story is ruined by multiplayer-only climaxes)

Well, to be fair, it's not the only game with this particular issue. Oh, how I remember finishing FF14 vanilla. Not a fascinating plot, but I'm a good boy, I will hype myself up with whatever bread crumbs you give me and I will fight whatever his name, for Eorzea !!!
Cue multiplayer dungeon with a bunch of seemingly idiotic headless chicken running everywhere like their life depends on it, transforming the climax in a game of hide and seek with your partners.

End credit.

Hahaha I had the same experience, though I stuck with it for longer in FF14. The dungeons were relatively painless by the time I started playing it, though I had to make a healer in order to avoid 30+ minute queues. I still found it frustrating though.

MMOs are the reason why I play on PC! Well, that and Warcraft I guess.

Now I lost interest in the genre, I really don't like how it became little more than a hub grinder... wait in the city for your automated dungeon with 4/5 people, or your raid... bumrush the corridor, get your daily/weekly dice roll, fuck off until the reset.
Bleeeh.
I loved MMOs when you had more social interactions (especially more of them outside of being required for loot...), and an actual living, breathing world. Now you get small zones, phased to hell and back, and never used once you've done the quests.
The WoW model just butchered the spirit of MMOs... and I really enjoyed WoW! Being able to play alone, make progress at a good pace, following interesting quest lines (well, not always, that one), much faster paced combat, all of that was great.

But it's pretty funny when I see people call Vanilla WoW difficult and unforgiving, wait until you (re)play old crap with 6+hours mandatory parties to do anything, DAYS of progress lost on death... and in general they were pretty shitty games, but hey, we talked with one another I guess.
Not exactly my best memories ultimately, you make those with people rather than the games themselves... and since you can literally complete 99.8% of modern MMOs without ever saying hello, it's getting harder and harder.

Anyway, I play a bit of Guild Wars 2, I like well enough since they've mostly fixed the reward structure (which does feel artificial and vomits new currencies every patch - but at least you know what you're getting/crafting)... it's also horizontal, so you don't throw away everything you did every patch and reset your class every expansion, they add more and more options instead... even if it becomes a bit messy, it's cool to have multiple specs in an MMO. It's getting rare.
They've also started adding constant world events and festivals, it's hit and miss, but damn does it help a lot the open world, which was always its strong point.
At least you play alongside others instead of human bots. Or literal bots when games start to falter like Everquest 2 and... Guild Wars 1.

I have insanely vivid memories of EQ1 and UO. Losing SOOOO much every time you failed was brutal, but it made you value what you gained for sure. I'm glad my MMO heyday was when I was young enough to have the time and patience for such things. Now I can't imagine the horror of WoW Classic.

I put so much time into GW2, but I think I am finally done with it. Each of the expansions only kept me around for 1-2 months tops, and the Living World content is just too much of the same. I think the combat in that game is what drove me away... The amount of dodging and telegraphs on the ground just became annoying as time went on and they made it more and more frantic to the point where I feel like I'm playing a SHMUP instead of an MMO - jump the shockwaves while staying out of the checkerboard of doom, while trying to kill enemies.

But why...

Final Fantasy XIV Under DDoS Attack as Square Enix Looks into Countermeasures - MMORPG.com
It may be the start of the Final Fantasy XIV: Shadowbringers early access period, but that doesn't mean things are going smoothly. Players have been reporting issues for the last couple of hours and it turns out that FFXIV servers are under DDoS attack.

For everyone talking about FFXIV, at least in the new expansion, we have the new Trust System that lets you do the ShB dungeons with AI story NPCs. From the sounds of it, it's slower than if you do it with a competent pre-made, but it's faster than a pub, because the AI actually do mechanics, and kind of fit in the atmosphere of the dungeon anyways.

Now all they need to do is patch that in for old content too.
That sounds perfect for me! If they were to add this to all of the pre-existing content I would be back in a snap.

Blinkin' Flip! I'd forgotten what an information overload an MMO screen can be at times, sorting out my display settings has moved right up the To-Do list.
Had no problem getting in to FFXIV and creating a character this morning. I've only seen one other lalafell so far so my contrarianism in choosing something not super-popular worked out! I thought the place would be flooded with Conjurers as they are supposedly one of the easier jobs to start out in but most seem to have gone for Arcanist for those sweet, sweet pets. Now i need to work out what the heck i'm doing next without looking like a total noob. So far, so good but so much to learn!

edit: I take it the "Pre-Order" items i have because i got the Collector's Edition in the sale will unlokc for me when i'm eligible to use them? I can see stuff on my account but nothing in-game.

Sampson Thanks! I'll check it out when i next log in. I finished the very first quest to go talk to people then messed with some settings and had to log out.
I'd already decided i liked the Lalafell with their lack of Grim Dark, i then found out they're relatively rare on Western Servers so i went with it. I also wanted to try something new rather than a ranged class i end up playing in other SP games and Conjuror/White Mage being supposedly easier for new players to pick up and get used to the systems of the game i chose that to start with.

I am kinds jealous of the Jobs with pets though so if the game clicks with me then i'll definitely try one of those next.

edit: Is "Recruit a friend" still a thing? I see people posting them around and it seems new people and the recruiter get some items? Is there no obligation other than that?

Healers got kind of gutted in this latest expansion, but WHM is reportedly still fun and the most engaging, so you picked the right healer class!

They’re not the same as pets, but as you play you’ll unlock minions which are little pet-like creatures that follow you around, ride on your shoulder, etc. You can’t use them in regular battles, but they can be used in a casino mini-game.

Recruit a friend is still a thing, and someone can give you a code if they have a slot free. You don’t have to do it but there are really good benefits for both of you:

Anyone can feel free to use mine 👀👀👀👀👀

I started as Archer, but I'm doing pretty much every class I can. :p

I started on Spriggan, so far didn't have much problems with queues, I think the largest one I had so far was like between 100~200 (not sure if it was more than that) yesterday evening?
Hopefully things will calm down on Twintania. ^^;

After only a 500 peoples queue in front of me last night i made it in to Eorzea!
I managed to get a couple of MSQ and CNJ quests done and i'm now level 12 and have to get to 15 to start the next CNJ quest.
Being a newbie on a newly launched server with "The Road to 70" perk turned on accelerates you through the levels like crazy! I didn't even wear the "Horned Helm of Extra XP"!
I also did a bunch of FATEs and they were fun little events that reminded me of Destiny, good times!

I don't know if people want it but i was also throwing a few cures around and things to people getting low. I figured i may as well start practising though. Also i noticed there's a lot more Lalafell around... the takeover starts soon...

I had a queue of 400 yesterday evening. ^^;

I'm glad we can change classes at any time, the completitionist in me wants to do all quests that I find, but I wouldn't have liked to be overleveled for them due to the new server boosted exp, but since we can change classes, I can manage to not be too overleveled by playing with multiple classes, especially now that I've gotten to a new city which came with a bunch more classes to unlock. :p

I had a queue of 2,200+ the other night so 500 was easy-mode! The game is still bewildering though but i'm identifying things i want to know like finding the targetting keys, how might i want my hotbar set up, learning keybinds, luckily apparently WHM is too simple to really need macros but rotations are good to learn but i'm MILES away from even that yet!

I have to go do MSQs now until 15 when i can resume the CNJ Guild Quests. I'm gonna spam Holy like a mofo when i get it!

So Pretty, so, so, Pretty...

I also understand the "Massive Neck Muscle" memes now too but then i'm one of those strange people who doesn't have an issue with the silent protagonist unlike some.

Realized that I never posted here since signing back up to FFXIV. Which it's always weird when I word it that way since it sort of implies that I made any sort of progress during the multiple times I've tried picking the game up. That couldn't be further from the truth.

As soon as I loaded up my catboy I was overwhelmed with hotbars I didn't remember and a bunch of windows being like, "Here's all these amazing things you could be doing right now!" and my first thought was, "Oh god.. this can only go poorly."

Thankfully I picked it back up rather quickly though there's still plenty for me to relearn or discover. Actually managed to have some positive experiences during my first time with dungeons. Had a very friendly cat lady in my first one that offered some good advice. The following dungeons were completely silent, but I consider that a positive given my experiences with other MMO's.

And for anyone that hasn't checked out the screenshot thread I'm finally able to ride around on my fat chocobo which is something I've wanted for a long long time, but would always bail on the game before that point. So while I've joked in other threads about my signing back up being the fault of two particular forum members I'm not sure if I've ever properly thanked them. So thank you Sampson and Ryna! It's been a blast so far! :smiling-face-with-smiling-eyes:

I spent the evening playing FFXIV last night after not playing for a day or two and realised that i know nothing! lol
I went from 12 to 19 on my Conjuror and now i look like a little grape coloured Jedi but i'm barreling through the MSQ as it's all lower levelled than i am for the moment. I cleared a bunch of FATES and for the first time in combat i had to quaff some ether potions to top my MP up so i could keep up the DPS, CNJ DPS tho lol. What was cool was getting about a third of the way through and realising i probably couldn't handle this one solo when a Tank and another CNJ turned up and we cleared it no problems. It was the second time i'd seen tanks draw aggro and as a squishy class i was glad of it!

I also performed my first Raise and out of combat too. I saw someone fighting on my way to bash some skeletons and as i ran past them to battle another mob it looked like they were having problems and sure enough after i battled my mob i turned around to check just to see them die. So i Raised them and Cured them up a bit then ran off to do my things. I then saw them twice in the skeleton pit and threw Cure at them randomly in my downtime. A while later i was running back to Bannock when i saw their body on the stair right by where i'd Raised them before but just as i clicked 'em they disappeared. Sorry random person but at least you got one.

Had my first KO trying to save someone from Big Zebras and my first FC invite but by the time i'd read up and found them the timer expired, oh well i doubt i'd be much use to them at the moment anyway as i am clueless.

Going to try for 20 later on and then level Botany for a bit. Is there anything stopping me from trying a bunch of Crafting jobs at once or should i stick with one for now?

Also am i doing wrong by throwing Cure around if i see someone fighting and they're down on health? As a CNJ/WHM wannabe i feel it's what i should be doing.

You're not doing anything wrong by helping them out. One of my favorite things is just roaming around the overworld hunting stuff, only to see a low level person getting wrecked and then throwing a heal on them or reviving a person.

Luminaire Thanks! Sometimes i cure someone and it draws aggro onto me but as i'm level 23 and most mobs are beneath that i can handle it and it gives people time for their cooldowns to reset and get back into it. I did notice a "thx" message in chat when i threw a Cure during a FATE so that was nice :)

Did a TON over the weekend! I made it to level 23, caught up with the Novice Training, sorted CNJ quests and took advantage of the free airship rides in the MSQ to learn 3 dances, unlock glamours and dyeing, add a Wolf Pup and Coeurl Kitten to my minions and some other bits and pieces.

I have a looming problem now though. Gridania is my home and i love it, Limsa Lominsa is a great place with neat uniforms and Ul 'Dah is Lalafell homeland... so where to GC? Hmmmm, i'll probably stick with Gridania and the Twin Adders there seem to be a lot more concerts going on at the Aether Crystals due to all the BRD about. It's awesome :)

I also somehow have 350 screenshots already. I may need to buy an external drive to hold them. I also want to try GShade/GPose/ShadowShade fun, customising my HUD & Hotbars, sorting out my keybinds and capturing short movies.

i'm pretty sure choosing CNJ/WHM was the right choice for me as a newbie to MMOs and FFXIV, i'm having fun but at some point i'll have to team up with others... :sorryblob:

Oh, while i'm in Ul'dah i may as well start Thaumaturge. I hadn't really thought about changing until i got my pointy horse but seeing the jobs you've tried i figure i should give it a whirl.

It's heartwarming to see people start up now and actually enjoy the early stages (specifically: A Realm Reborn.)

Things escalate in quality as you approach the first expansion and its a continuous ride upwards from there. Your actions per minute will speed up significantly as you get more abilities and handle more mechanics, so look forward to things continually evolving.

Outside of two minor problems with different dungeon groups I'm still having a lot of fun with FFXIV. Though to be fair I was kind of the problem with one of them. I had no idea you could return to the entrance of a dungeon and after a few minutes of awkward silence as I frantically ran around alone someone finally explained how. It was pretty embarrassing and I felt horrible that they had to wait.

I managed to unlock the dragoon right before maintenance hit earlier and unlocked black mage a few nights ago. Both have been great so far. Pretty excited to jump into the crafting too.

And that's all without even mentioning my catboy's makeover. I started noticing that my white hair wasn't quite so unique anymore and honestly probably hadn't been for a long time. So I figured a change was in order! I'll have to grab a new screenshot when the servers are back up. :grinning-face-with-smiling-eyes:
