Nebuchadnezzar is a classic isometric city builder game inviting players to experience the mysterious history and culture of ancient Mesopotamia. In the campaign, players get to rule over influential historical cities filled with magnificent monuments.

Gameplay
From plowing fields to creating products, players must oversee the manufacturing of agriculture and goods for the city population. Players have an arsenal of tools to optimize their objectives. In addition, a maximum overview of their city helps players to solve problems and prevent population loss. Nebuchadnezzar’s gameplay is geared towards all types of players: from beginners of the genre to experienced strategists.

Campaign
Nebuchadnezzar’s main campaign contains 16 historical missions covering the colonization of ancient lands to the conquest of Babylon by Persians in 6th Century BC. Each mission summons a different time period in Ancient Mesopotamian history. Players must carry out tasks important to the specific time and place of each mission, including the construction of historical monuments.

Monuments
During the campaign players will not only build complex ancient monuments, but design them too. Nebuchadnezzar features an in-game “monument editor” giving players complete control over their buildings. From structural design to color scheme to final details: it’s in the hands of the player. Will you recreate history or make history? It’s up to you.

Mods & Localization
Nebuchadnezzar was created with mods and localization in mind. Modders will be able to create their own buildings, goods, and monuments. And in addition, they can invent new missions and campaigns. All definition files are written in the easy to read Lua language. Localizing mods will not be a problem. You can create mods in multiple languages and/or add languages to existing ones. This applies to the base game as well.

Oh, that's lovely!

It seems like an unapologetic application of the Sierra / Impression Games formula of auld.

Not everything has to be 3D, and the gorgeous art styles of those games hold well, to my mind, even today --- or is it just nostalgia talking? And to me, that art style was the selling point; the gameplay was fun enough, but the true reward was looking at the bustling city, full of quirky characters and exquisitely-drawn buildings, all dripping with personality.

Speaking of that, Nebuchadnezzar's art style looks just a little "flat" and utilitarian to me, compared with the above games, which is the only thing tempering (slightly) my enthusiasm at seeing a revival of a niche which I thought dead and (lavishly) entombed.

Or have I simply not been paying attention? In the early 2000s, everyone and their dog was going with that newfangled 3D thing, long before the technology could convey the same level of detail, and I kind of stopped paying attention to city-builders. prudis, if you are a city-builders buff, and know of other such games, specifically "Impression-likes", 2D city builders with an antique theme, I for one am very interested.

As for Nebuchadnezzar, wishlisted, of course.

I wonder if the game will utilize the weird and unwieldy "walker"-system from the old Impressions-games.

I would hope not.

Note: steam tags the game with "free to play"; that seems to be in error, as other sources indicate a --- very reasonable --- $19.99 price tag.

I took a look at the game's website, and astonishingly, it seems "Nepos Games" is actually just a two-guys team, for whom this was a passion project, initially pursued during their free time.

Press material with all relevant info:

Steam+Gog, Windows + Linux version. Take my money already!

Furthermore, there are a few posts on their blogs, and some are quite interesting, imo. For instance, this post about coordinate systems:

Yeah, sometimes users or even devs add the wrong tag, shit happens, I guess hehe. :cat-heart-blob:

Also thanks for the links, much appreciated, the more information, the better :blobmorning:

Anyone here who bought it right away? I've been addicted to Pharaoh many, many years ago and this obviously scratches the same itch and it looked like it included some improvements and enhancements as well. But the reviews on Steam are not the greatest (75% positive as of me writing this) and later this year there's the official Pharaoh remake coming out (Pharaoh: A New Era). So now I'm debating whether to hold off or not [UWSL]:thinking-face:[/UWSL]

I did. Only had time for the first mission, though.

The negative reviews I see pertain to the lack of quirky voice lines for citizens and stuff like that.

While it is definitely a large part of why I loved those games, it is not reasonable to expect that from a two man team, and it is adequately reflected in the asking price. The mechanics seem polished, and the graphics are good (though they could have more charm).

I'd say it depends on what you enjoyed most from Pharaoh; the logistics, or the quirkiness ?

(Personally, Pharaoh is the one I played the least, and is not very quirky -- so far as i remember -- compared to, say, Zeus, and had very challenging logistics, simplified in the later iterations.)
and later this year there's the official Pharaoh remake coming out (Pharaoh: A New Era).
Oh, and I wanted to add: thank you for mentioning that, I didn't know about it!

I want to add to that they also push small updates every few days, that are usually very small (today's was 18.4 KB) but always contain pertinent fixes and balance tweaks, obviously spurred by community feedback. The devs are active in the forum almost daily.

That a studio of two manages to crank out minor updates at breakneck speed, and prepare major ones with voice acting, new buildings etc, and do community management -- the right way! -- is extremely impressive.

Apparently, military is on their roadmap somewhere (as a DLC). Among other things.

The game may well age like fine wine...

I can't find any data on how well it sold. Hopefully well enough that they can hire somebody.

Nebuchadnezzar or Pharaoh or Pharaoh (2023) ?

I kinda want to build an Egyptian city, but the steam reviews for both the newer games are polarized.
