During the NieR 10th Anniversary concert, Square Enix has announced a NieR: Replicant remaster set to release on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and PC via Steam. The official title of the remaster looks to be 'NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...' and was called a 'version upgrade'. While it has not officially been announced for the West yet, it's likely only a matter of time before we get the inevitable confirmation.

For what it's worth, the number in the title is √(3/2).

In 2010, the original Nier launched in two forms in Japan - NieR: Gestalt on Xbox 360 and NieR: Replicant on PS3. The main difference between the two was that the 360 version had an older main character - and the international release for both platforms was entirely based on this version. The remaster looks to be of NieR: Replicant, meaning it features the younger protagonist, meaning this remaster is a version of the game that western audiences haven't yet experienced. The core of the game is the same, however.

After its original release, a PlayStation Vita version of NieR: that combined both versions of the game into a definitive edition was under development, but was ultimately canceled. If this remaster will pick up this concept or simply remaster Replicant only specifically remains unclear.

In the year of the 10th anniversary of NieR, we are announcing that the cult classic third-person action-RPG NieR Replicant, is to be rebuilt for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC (STEAM) as NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

NieR Replicant is the prequel of the critically acclaimed success NieR:Automata.

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... invites players into a dark, apocalyptic world as they join a brother’s captivating quest to cure his sister of a deadly disease - a quest which will in turn make them question everything. Developed in collaboration with Toylogic,(original developer Cavia, is now defunct.)

NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... brings together an all-star team including acclaimed director, YOKO TARO (Drakengard / NieR:Automata), composer Keiichi Okabe (TEKKEN / Drakengard / NieR:Automata), and producer Yosuke Saito (DRAGON QUEST X / NieR:Automata).

Square Enix's Yosuke Saito, the producer of the NieR series, responded "I don't even know" when asked if the remaster will have a different ending. Additionally, composer Keiichi Okabe has re-recorded all its songs as well as added new songs for the project.
The game's Japanese voices will be re-recorded, and the voice cast is as follows (note 'Nier' here refers to the 'brother' version of Nier, the character):
  • Child Nier: Nobuhiko Okamoto
  • Nier: Kōji Yusa
  • Yonah: Ai Nonaka
  • Grimoire Weiss: Hiroki Yasumoto
  • Emil: Mai Kadowaki
Here are a few more details (source Games Talk):
  • It is neither a remaster or a remake, rather an upgraded version of the game.
  • Development is being handled by Toylogic, and PlatinumGames’ Takahisa Taura, who was a senior game designer on NieR: Automata, is also cooperating on the title.
  • It is fully voiced, with all voice-overs re-recorded.
  • The release date is still undecided, but they want to release it during the 10th anniversary.
  • Various new things have been added, so even if you already played NieR Replicant, this game will have a fresh feeling to it.
  • New characters will appear.
  • New endings may also appear (undecided).
  • All background music has been re-recorded. New songs will also appear.
  • Yui Ishikawa, who voiced 2B in NieR: Automata, and Natsuki Hanae, who voiced 9S, will have a small role in this game. Ishikawa’s role has already been recorded.

Day 0. I've never played either of the original NieR games, but I adored Automata.

Nice! Now I can finally get a friend to play Nier.

That said, I guess they'll need new English VA for this since it's Replicant. The English VA (and translation in general) for Gestalt was pretty amazing, so that's a bit of a shame. On the other hand, I guess it being Replicant makes it more fresh to play through if you already played Gestalt.

Nier Automata is the only game in the series that I've played so I'm looking forward to this. I was waiting for the one on 360 to become backwards compatible but it never happened.

Never played the first because I heard it had bad combat and no PC port. I'll at least try it now that it's coming to Steam.

My favorite of the two Nier games.

But no dad nier and poor no PC support means i won't buy until it's on sale for cheap.

They couldn't event get the basic shit working in Automata, like fullscreen rendered at sub native resolution for me, not to mention all the other issues with the game.

I've played a couple hours of my ps3 copy of whatever the western version is called (Gestalt apparently?), so while this isn't that (at least not yet anyway), I always felt it would be better on pc, now I can find out.

this sounds like it's going to be pretty different, I guess I should probably still go find a copy of the original Gestalt

The original Nier is one of my favorite games during the xbox360/ps3 era. The game played okay and looked like shit but the story and music are... whew.

I am starting to feel the hype inside me, but i really shouldn't buy any games now. Be strong, my will.

i hate that all 3rd party stores don't sell their games in my region, mainly Square-enix. If I buy it I'll have to pay full price with no discounts on Steam.

Originally sent to game reviewers, we wanted to share some messages from the famously outspoken creators of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... with the fans to celebrate the game’s release.

…it may have been a mistake.

YOKO TARO - Creative Director

Hello there everyone, YOKO TARO, Creative Director of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139... here.

This game is a “version upgrade” of a title released 10 years ago under the name of “NIER”. That’s right, it’s not a remake or a remaster, it’s a “version upgrade”.

In the beginning I only intended for it to be a remaster you know. With some improved resolutions and that… But once I started saying that I would like to tweak the models a bit, or that I wanted to fix up the backgrounds etc., we were soon looking at a lot of fixes and improvements.

I mean, Square Enix recently did that remake of FINAL FANTASY VII right? I saw that and I thought it would be terribly inconvenient to be compared to such a massive blockbuster, so that was when I decided to call Replicant ver.1.22… a “version upgrade”.

Incidentally, the big string of numbers on the end of the title was just something I stuck on randomly, so I wouldn’t think too hard about it if I was you.

And another thing. In recent years, when I have been around Square Enix, they always give off this palpable aura of enthusiasm as if to say “Look! NieR:Automata (the previous thing I made) did well, so NieR Replicant will also sell now”. I would like to take this opportunity to tell Square Enix to take a good hard look at reality. Only the names are similar and the content of the two games is completely different, so it’s not really going to sell all that well now, is it lads?

I mean, come on, I made it! Automata selling was a fluke, and all my other stuff has hardly sold anything worthy of note. If you really do go ahead and manufacture all these discs and then store them in a big pile in a warehouse somewhere, the only thing we can do with that will be to have a good game of frisbee. Although, I mean… that does sound like fun and all…

Right now, at this very moment, some guy from the Square Enix marketing team is looming behind me and his glare is saying “YOKO you bastard, just promote the game properly for a change!”, but meh, not much that can be done about that now is there? Let’s all just give up and call it a day. I mean, you really don’t understand anything in this game until you play it through multiple times right? And the reviewers will find it pretty hard to do that in the limited time they have…

So, more importantly than that, let’s all just go home early and be nice to our parents, Mm, yes, that would have a much more positive impact on the world I think.

Yosuke Saito - Producer

Hello everyone. It’s “long time no see” for some of you, and I guess “nice to meet you” for others. My name is Yosuke Saito, and I am the producer of NieR Replicant ver.1.22474487139...

Thanks to all you fans out there, NieR:Automata became a massive hit, and this game was developed under great pressure from that past success.

We are calling it a “version upgrade”, but regardless of what Mr. YOKO says, I personally believe that moniker doesn’t do justice to the level of quality that the team has achieved!

Having said that, NieR:Automata’s big success was honestly somewhat of a miracle, so I don’t think we will be selling quite that much… However, if we don’t shift a certain amount then Mr. YOKO and myself will be forced to travel the world, selling the game out the back of a van. Ah, and Mr. Okabe will have to come along too!

So now you know this, please keep on supporting the NieR series.

Please, anything but the van…

As the game requires a lot of repetitive running from a to b i found this little trick quite nice:

With a good pc you can use the bug at higher than 60 fps as a speed mode, just bind the frame rate lock to a button (like here with rtss).

Yeah, I did farming at 120 FPS (without a framerate fix mod). That's one of the reasons I eventually installed SpecialK -- I didn't need it for 60 FPS.
