I thought it would be a cool idea to post about some unknown/obscure games that don't get mentioned much, or at all on many forums. I know other forums post these sort of threads as well but usually it seems to be games that actually have a following and or are just smaller on consoles. I'll start off with a few:

CHAMELEON (2005)

The main things I know about this is that it was done by a lot of the team from the first Mafia, "The game was released in a limited quantity in a limited number of countries and has never been released in western markets. The development was already finished in 2003 but it was published in 2005" it is very strange that it didn't go west as it was published by Take Two and English voice overs and was considered good 78% on Mobygames.

VIVISECTOR (2005)

I remember this game for having some great destructible enemies, you could shoot chunks of meat off them, allowing you to see the skeleton below. Also had some pretty wide levels. "It was originally intended to be an entry in the Duke Nukem franchise titled Duke Nukem: Endangered Species Hunter "-Wiki

YOU ARE EMPTY (2006)

This one seems to have a cult following. "The game is set in an alternate-history Soviet Union. It begins with the protagonist waking up in a ruined hospital, and it soon becomes clear that the populace has been afflicted by mutation and madness. He then must battle to stay alive and unravel the mystery. " -Wiki

COLLAPSE (2008)

Game from Ukraine, I remember really enjoying this, action combat with a sword like God of war combined with 3rd person shooting. There was also an expansion called Collapse: The Rage in 2010.

WHITE GOLD/XENUS 2 (2008)

This one might be more well known in PC circles as it is the sequel to Boiling Point: Road to Hell.
It is an open world game where you take on main/side missions and based on that your alliances change with the different factions. There are vehicles to drive from cars/helicopters/boats etc... these developers always went super ambitious (which meant lots of bugs).

PRECURSORS (2009)

From the same developers as the game above (Boiling Point and White Gold), but even more ambitious. Had the same gameplay loop as those games just on a galaxy level
"The game features a free-roaming world, with vast open areas, diverse weapons and a multitude of land, air and space vehicles. The player will be able to do a multitude of missions on six different planets or moons and even the interior of spaceships and space stations. Different vehicles can be used in engagements on the ground ranging from simple buggies and flyers to hover tanks and mechanical robots. After getting a spaceship, the player can also engage in space trade and combat with other factions in between the planetary missions. The player's spaceship can be upgraded throughout the game and the player character himself can be developed using a perk system " -Wiki

Theres a lot more I'll post as I remember them.

UBERSOLDIER 2 (2006)

Another game which might be more well known on PC (its on steam). I remember enjoying this game, shooting felt good, although AI were aimbots and great graphics and some interesting superpower abilities like a shield that would catch bullets.

SHADE: WRATH OF ANGELS (2004)

This was a 3rd person action-adventure RPG, I remember it being technically advanced with a really good lighting system, got very mixed reviews in the end. "with over 30 hours of gameplay. The game consists of action/adventure elements with hidden secrets and twists. The game includes four different chapters traveling through different times and dimensions. There are 30 different levels with a tutorial included. The player has the ability to wield both weapons or cast spells on 20 different types of enemies. "-Wiki

I will pay good money for legitimate copies of vivisector and you are empty - physical or digital, since they are nigh impossible to track down in non dutch/german on ebay. Have been looking for quite some time

heh , lots of interesting stuff stuff in here .... its the kind of stuff i used to buy on the small town niche corner shop in the hidden shelf for like +- 5$ (while new modern games were equivalent of 80$ here back then)

Most of these were from russian publishers (Buka , 1c, Russobit, Akella ,... ) , super low budget gameslow budget mostly russuain published , often even CZ translated, sometimes even dubbed (unlike the western games a the time for some reason) , protected by insane DRMs of the time like Tages or Starforce.

Oh the memories ..... might try to find the CDs :dualbladesblob:

You weren't kidding about being obscure! Never heard about any of these. Very cool.
Haha yeah that is why I wanted to do this thread, I'll post more when I have time.
Lots of these unfortunately are hard to find now, some you can pirate.

Some were in my old gaming magazines and were meant to be high profile on release, but budget couldn't match their ambition, and they just didn't reach a big audience.

Games like white gold/precursors etc... are on steam but you need community patches to get English voices and bug fixes.

I just started playing that Chameleon game from the Mafia developers and I am shocked at how good it is so far. Feels like it takes place in the same style universe of Mafia except you are playing a spy. First mission is in a hub city like area, where you have to spy on someone and use gadgets to record his conversation, the city feels lived in and alive, with lots of ambient chatter and detail. I'll post a couple screens in the screenshot thread later this evening.

wil have to correct you a bit on bolded one :p

Mafia was made by former Illusion Softworks (later 2k Czech), Chameleon wasnt really made by the Mafia team , but by the Silver Wish studio in Slovakia , but yeah it used Mafia engine and IS helped them.

Illusion Softworks ultimately consisted of these studios before the 2K acquisition ... Illusion Softworks Brno (Mafia series, Hiddena nd Dangerous series) . IS Prague (Top Spin 4) , Pterodon (Flying Heroes , Vietcong series ) and Silver Wish (Wings of War, Chameleon, Axel and Pixel ) . Pterodon and Silver Wish were later disbanded in IS and currently the whole of 2K Czech was merged into Hangar 13 , while big part of the team left to build WWarhorse Studios after Mafia 2.

Awesome, I didn't know a lot of those finer details. Didn't realise how many studios they have formed or merged into.

Not trying to hijack the thread, but would just like to show you the following thread on a similar subject if you're interested:

We got some nice old obscure games in that thread as well.

found some, there is probably more at the old foks attic
So awesome, I think I still have my boiling point/full spectrum dvd's somewhere. I remember watching the movies night watch and day watch (not sure if they are connected).

The only game there that I've never seen or played before is hell forces.

GENETROOPERS (2006)

This game had so much potential but ended up being very mediocre to bad, I remember it having very good physics (including a gravity gun mechanic) and cool looking weapons.

I'm really really sad we never got Sol Trigger in the West or any kind of remaster of it; nowadays I can't help but wonder if that's impossible at this point since Imageepoch went under. It was a Japan only turn-based JRPG on the PSP; a very high fidelity one at that. It was the biggest budget game they ever developed, and I fear it came out just a bit too late to make its way Westward. Had people that worked on Final Fantasy games and the Persona 4 comic on the team.

(the English in one of these pics is from an unfinished fan translation; as of now the game has no complete English translation)

PSP has so many JRPGs... I compile a huge list of PSP games so I can get through them one-by-one once I get the Steam Deck in 2023 or later.

Here's one called Terror of the Stratus. I heard the story is pretty good. It is written by the person behind Infinite Space and Root Film.

A hard copy of HellForce? Holy shit.
It's a thread of all the CIS games I've been looking to find legit copies of (since learning of the huge glut of games that never released here circa 2000-2010) and I'm jealous you have one

I cant claim that it's a good game (though ive heard it is ), my interest in a lot of these titles if a mix of FOMO and intrigue of how other parts of the world designed shooters circa half life 2

To be honest, lots of the games I have mentioned would not be considered great by many people, but they usually have a weird charm to them, some had big ambitions or a gimmick to try make them unique. And yeah I suppose there is a FOMO with them as they are usually harder to find (although some are now on steam, 5 yeasrs ago they weren't), or lost relics. Some you can't even pirate unless you go to weird blog sites that are riskier.

Anyway can't post without posting another game.

NEURO (2006)
not to be confused with Neuro Hunter

This was originally only available in Russia (until 2018 where it got republished for the Asian markets and got English support). Its a cyberpunk first person shooter.
"Neuro is a low-key crime drama with a cyberpunk theme and backdrop that philosophizes on the devolution of humankind: Even though humans have spread themselves out amongst the stars and developed technology to improve and enrich their lives, they are still likely to exploit each other whenever possible. James Gravesen is a law officer who is attempting to arrest an elusive smuggler with government connections, Ramone, who is dealing in "Lilac Death," a highly dangerous weaponized substance that can "wipe out Sorgo three times". James has biotechnology implanted in his brain that gives him a handful of psi-weapons: From 30 feet away and only using his mind, he can light enemies on fire, blow them off their feet and crush them, and make them go berserk and kill their allies. He can also see through walls to identify where enemies lurk, and he can heal himself. All of this takes a psi-energy which depletes with each use but resets over time. The enemies are mostly crooks trying to stop you from completing your various missions." -Wiki.

I'm not making the same value judgements the the eponymous Keith does, but his blog is how I heard about a lot of these games the first go around - like Hellforces, Neuro, You Are Empty
Keith's Crappy Video Game Blog - A zesty mix of good, forgotten, and bad games in long form

Funny enough I saw that blog when trying to get Neuro screenshots. There are some good ones there that i haven't posted but have played . Don't agree on his opinions with the games though.

Did you know that there are Blair Witch Project games?
No I don't mean the one with the dog from 2019. No I mean Blair Witch Project, 3 kids in the woods scared of scary noises and standing in a corner Blair Witch Project. If you're old enough to know what I'm talking about, you may remember the three games made to further flesh out the mythology that is only hinted at as backstory from the first film

Volume 1 Rustin Parr

The first is a 3rd person horror game, similar to Resident Evil in it's static backgrounds and movable characters presentation. The plot concerns Rustin Parr, the hermit who kidnapped and killed children in his basement while under the spell of the Blair Witch as mentioned in the film. You're tasked with discovering whether the Witch is real or not. The game's also a sequel/related to Nocturne, also developed by Terminal Reality as you work for Spookhouse and are partnered with The Stranger, Nocturne's protagonist. This would also imply it is tangentially related to Bloodrayne who appears in Nocturne

Volume 2 The Legend of Coffin Rock

Next up is The Legend of Coffin Rock , This time out more survival horror from none other than Human Head studios. You play an amnesiac who has to find a missing girl in the 1880s who has disappeared in the same woods supposedly haunted by the Witch and figure out just who you are and why youre dressed as Confederate soldier

Volume III: The Elly Kedward Tale

Taking a slight detour from the previous two volumes, Vol.3 is actually not a plotline/myth pulled directly from the film, but is instead more 3rd person survial horror detailing the origins of the Witch and the myth surrounding her. And like Vol.2, a different dev involved here as well, this time Ritual (they of Sin and Sin Episodes fame)

Despite the developer pedigree and the massive amount of hype for the Blair Witch at the time, the games were at best 'okay', but controlled and played about as well as low budget RE knockoffs would be expected. 1 engine, 3 devs and a development window of about a year or so didn't help thing.

I watched a Let's Play of all the three Blair Witch games a couple of years ago. I found them interesting but you can definitely see that they are budget titles.

That's pretty cool. There's also an X-Files adventure game on PS1 that's supposedly pretty alright. I'd really love to play it. A friend of mine had a half-working bootleg copy of it, and it was fascinating to me at the time. We both barely knew English too so it was all incomprehensible.

I remember seeing the first Blair Witch game., but have never seen the 2nd and 3rd game. And definitely did not know Human Head Studios was involved with the second, I loved their Prey game.

I didn't realize that X-Files game also came out for the playstation as well. Interesting. I wonder if it was any different than its PC counterpart.

No idea! Probably looks a good bit worse. I wonder if it’d be possible to get the PC version to run nicely nowadays…
