Hopoo Games has released Risk of Rain 2 for PC via Steam Early Access for $19.99. Users who purchase the game before March 30 at 12:00 p.m. PT / 3:00 p.m. ET will receive an additional copy of the game for free to give to a friend.

Risk of Rain 2 will stay in Early Access for around 12 months before the full release. The full version will include more content (10 characters, 10 stages, 12 bosses, and over 100 items), a true ending and boss fight to match, and more.

The classic multiplayer roguelike, Risk of Rain, returns with an extra dimension and more challenging action. No run will ever be the same with randomized stages, enemies, bosses, and items. Play solo, or team up with up to four friends to fight your way through hordes of monsters, unlock new loot, and find a way to escape the planet.

With each run, you’ll learn the patterns of your foes, and even the longest odds can be overcome with enough skill. A unique scaling system means both you and your foes limitlessly increase in power over the course of a game–what once was a bossfight will in time become a common enemy.

Myriad survivors, items, enemies, and bosses return to Risk 2, and many new ones are joining the fight. Brand new survivors like the Artificer and MUL-T debut alongside classic survivors such as the Engineer, Huntress, and–of course–the Commando. With over 75 items to unlock and exploit, each run will keep you cleverly strategizing your way out of sticky situations.

Key Features
  • Play four player co-op seamlessly through Steam — no more port forwarding.
  • Unlock over 75 items over time, keeping each run fresh and full of new challenges.
  • Play and unlock new and returning survivors, each with their own abilities to master.
  • Theorycraft and exploit endless item and character combos.
  • Encounter challenging monsters and enormous bosses.
  • Explore massive, handcrafted 3D levels.
  • Discover lore through the collection of Monster, Item, and Environment Logs.
  • Challenge your friends—and the world—in all-new Prismatic Trials, a unique seeded run where everyone can race up a global leaderboard.

And because #Senpai is awesome I also have a copy. I'm at the edge of my data cap (relatively) so I'll be waiting until April 1st to download it but I'll be up for some runs following that.

I was never amazing at the first game, though I do believe a couple friends and I beat it (I definitely know we reached the last boss). I'm very curious how this turns out with the change in perspective.

I watched some more game play videos and it seems a lot more action than I first thought. Still the environment looked a bit too empty. But it's probably the style of the game to be minimalistic

So cool they kept items appearing in your character model!

In the first game the levels also had that empty feeling, though as the time pass more and more enemies spawns and it lessens that impression.

I am aware of that. But emptiness in a 3D world isn't same as emptiness in a 2D world. I remember that the first game the levels weren't so big, I might be wrong.

Think is was kind of shitty of them to release this on my birthday and not give me a copy!:D

I'm considering getting a 20€ steam card just for this eventhough I can't play it, just to support the dev. Loved the first one so much.

IF it is what I am thinking it just means you can't buy it as a gift (meaning two gifts in inventory). So basically you can only buy the game & get one extra copy.

This game really translates to 3D very well.

I just did my first run. I did a lot of farming it seems. I took out the first boss and went to the second level. I went about 30 minutes and died at the second level boss.

Is the space the same as the first game generally? Because 30 minutes to reach the second level boss seem a long time. Not saying you’re playing wrong but with the change of perspective they may have slowed down the overall pace compared to the previous game.

I tended to always farm heavily in the first game so unless I’m pushed along by others I’d likely be in the same boat.

I just played my second game and it ran just shy under an hour. I don’t really know how far I got, but I beat about five or six bosses, I think. This time I tended to rush, and I didn’t farm. Basically, I love this game and I wish I was getting card drops and achievements.

Anyway, I sucked at RoR1 and need to try it again.

The longest I’ve gone is about 90ish minutes. The last boss I was at, I could never get past the respawning minionfucks and bossbastard’s health that kept replenishing. I think I spent 20 minutes on that boss until a damn daranged buffalo got me in the ass. I think I would have eventually got it. However, my ass is sore.

Well, it’s time to jump in again.

Wow! 65,638 playing right now...

Wow. Nice to see that kind of success story to counter some of the dumb Steam negativity. I didn't expect this to be so popular! It's not quite my thing or what I expected not having played the original. I thought there'd be some roguelite style exploration and stuff but, you basically spawn in a relatively small area, enemies constantly spawn around you in different types, ground or flying, melee or ranged, and apparently getting increasingly harder all the time so you shouldn't waste too much time either. So you move your ass, find that area's teleporter pad thing while constantly killing minions, fight the boss that spawns there, activate the teleporter to get the hell out and repeat in the next area. Loot and power ups and shit all over inbetween. It's fun. Maybe more fun in co-op. Clearly lots of people like it. I guess it's like, a condensed and over the top L4D style game with sci-fi roguelite trappings? A constant thrill ride for some, I guess.

I wonder how Hades sales compare launch aligned. Another roguelite action game in early access >_>

You can barely tell what it is glancing at the store page. GG EGS.

Devs were surprised too haha.

The game peaked at 70K!

I just had an awesome run playing with the Huntress, though I missed the celestial portal in the previous level so I missed a chance to unlock another character.

I was almost unkillable by trash mobs, but one wrong maneuver and I got a ton of damage from the bosses and an Imp finished me. :(

Over 60k players? That's insane. I wonder what made game so popular. Was the buy one get one deal, or that Gearbox announced that they are publisher for the game or simply that the first game was really great

I feel bad for still not having tried Risk of Rain 2. Maybe tonight I will play it

After playing just very briefly shortly after a release I played a few rounds with my buddy last night. We realized that with 4 players you seem to have much better chances of survival as with only two players (didn't really look like the enemy's HP were scaling with player numbers). We had a ton of fun and it was fun to check out all the different items that you can get.

You feel a bit lost in the game, but it's still EA, so I guess that tutorials n stuff don't have any priority right now. Also, neither of us played RoR1, so that probably plays a role, too. Looking forward to where this game goes and I hope they add a ton of stuff to increase the variety of things (more map types, more enemy types, more items). I have yet to unlock another class.

I finished Divinity 2 Flames of Vengeance last night so i thought i'd give this a solo run this morning to see how it goes and damn, i liked it tons. It's so easy to pick up and play or is Running about shooting everything while looking for the teleporter and opening up canisters and crates for loot and stackable buffs then fight the battles while the teleporter charges and on to the next world for more, the wrong way? :)

I was 55 minutes in on 'easy' though the meter said 'very hard' when it crashed on the second teleporter battle. Stupid Unity hates my rig :(
I mean it is EA and i had 4 drones and 3 turrets and a ton of buffs as i'd been alive so long in the same world looking for the exit so i expect it just creaked under the weight of the madness :)

Good fun!
