Solasta: Crown of the Magister

Solasta: Crown of the Magister is a new upcoming Tactical RPG based on D&D OGL 5e ruleset. Roll for initiative, take attacks of opportunity, manage player location and the verticality of the battlefield.

Bring the authentic Tabletop gaming experience to your PC!
Roll for initiative, take attacks of opportunity, manage player location and the verticality of the battle field. Set yourself up for the finishing strike and possibly roll a natural 20 at that key moment of battle.

In Solasta, you take control of four heroes, each with unique skills that complement one another. Every hero expresses themselves in the adventure, making each action and dialog choice a dynamic part to the story. Players will create their heroes just as they would in a pen-and-paper game choosing their race, class, personality and rolling for their stats.

You make the choices, dice decide your destiny.

Key Features:
  • An Epic Team Adventure.
Discover the shattered world of Solasta: explore ruins and dungeons for legendary treasures, learn the truth of an age-old cataclysm - and stop it from happening again.

Create your very own party of adventurers with our Character Creation Tool in the classic tabletop RPG tradition. Breathe life into your heroes, and see their personalities reflected in their dialogue. Tailor your squad to your preferred strategy and maximizes your party's abilities. The choice is yours.

  • Discover a Mysterious & Dynamic World.
Delve into long forgotten dungeons to unearth ancient artifacts, but stay watchful of light and darkness: many dangers hide in the dark, but a light can attract monsters. Some enemies have darkvision, some may flee from your torch... Successful adventurers will learn to use it to their advantage.

Fight monsters in squad-level, turn-based, tactical combat. Solasta's dynamic environment offers some interesting tactical options. Bridges can collapse, leaving enemies stranded and vulnerable. Walls and columns can be pushed over - on top of your foes, if you do it right. The world is your playground.

  • Prepare to Think in Three Dimensions.
The dungeons in Solasta are more than flat game-boards. Climb, jump, or fly around obstacles. Evade or surprise foes from above or below. Push them into chasms or drop things on their heads. Position yourself on high grounds to start the fight with an advantage.

Size also matters. Escape through narrow passages where bigger enemies won't fit and crawl through tunnels to find secret areas. Take advantage of the environment to find cover suited to your own size. Watch out, though - the monsters are also thinking vertically.

  • True to the Tabletop.
Based on the 5e ruleset of the world's most popular tabletop RPG, Solasta: Crown of the Magister brings back the thrill, tactics, and deep storytelling of tabletop games.

As you play, you'll feel yourself reaching for your dice and miniatures. It's time to dive into the world of Solasta. Roll for initiative!
Solasta: Crown of the Magister is an upcoming tactical RPG developed by Tactical Adventures, a development studio based in Paris and founded by Mathieu Girard (co-founder of Amplitude Studios, now owned by SEGA) last year.

He said in a statement:
Tactical Adventures is a small team comprised of Tabletop gamers, many of whom have been playing pen and paper games as well as D&D videogames for over 30 years. We have always dreamed of creating our own game, so we set out to create Solasta, taking the best elements of our favorite games and enhancing and building upon them. Additionally, we have added new features such as light, verticality, team-based adventure, dice rolls, etc. We are using the actual rulesets from Tabletop games to finally bridge the gap between Pen and Paper and videogames.

Sounds great! I'm always up for more RPG goodness. Not sure I will be Kickstarting it, but I'll definitely keep on eye on it.

Played this at PAX, it seemed like it has a lot of potential. The UI and UX definitely need some love but with the Kickstarter coming up I think this game has a really great base to grow on.

Was it the same as that IGN gameplay footage?

Sounds good, looking forward to the Steam demo later today.

I only played for about 20 minutes so I didn't cover as much ground but it looks to be the same content. I thought about playing it another day since there was almost never a line but it is really hard to play turn-based games in short bursts there. Had the same problem with Divinity Fallen Heroes.

Wish-list us on Steam, download the demo on Steam. The various tiers only promise a digital copy of the game. Yeah, nah, I'm out already.

Actually, from their Kickstarter FAQs:

«Can you promise not to go Exclusive on Epic Game Store?

Let's be honest here. It is impossible to prove on Kickstarter that someone won't ever go to Epic Game Store. We can say whatever we want, at the end of the day there is no guarantee for you, the backer.
What we can tell you however is that we are not fond of Exclusivity Deals, and that Mathieu (our CEO) has released all his previous games at Amplitude Studios on Steam (Endless Space, Endless Legend...). Another thing to keep in mind is that we're a new Studio looking to create many games in the future, and we cannot build a community on broken promises.
So yea. We're not looking to go Exclusive on Epic Game Store. Whether you decide to believe in our words is up to you!»

I tried a bit of the demo.

I like the verticality and exploration, but the camera control is left a lot to be desired. Need more keyboard functionality/shortcut.

For those interested in having the game on GOG, here's an excerpt from the first backer update:

«Another topic that often comes up is GOG - I can tell you that we're currently in discussion with them :)»

Man, I really have to give up on backing crowdfunding campaigns.
It's getting more annoying by the day, and I just don't think I have the patience to deal with it any more.
These people thing of backers as cash cows, and nothing more.

Crap like what Shenmue 3 and Phoenix Point did certainly made me think twice about backing certain games, as did the amount of missing rewards I keep experiencing.

But still, I keep backing a campaign here and there, because I like to support indie developers and smaller titles, and because of the background of the creator of Solasta (and because the game looks cool), I went for it.

I saw certain in-game items were exclusive to higher tiers. It's not something I particularly like, but anyway I went for it, and backed the game at a tier that got me all the in-game content they were offering in the campaign (after messaging the developers first to confirm my selected tier would get me all the exclusive in-game items).

I just returned home after a couple of days away, only to read an update saying they started a referral program, and will be offering certain in-game items only to backers who refer other users to back the campaign.
So, even after selecting a tier above what the game will retail for, I will be locked out of certain content, unless 3 people I refer also back the campaign.:astonished-face:

Yeah, screw them.

I had not seen that shit about referrals. Canceling my pledge now. I was already pretty much out on crowdfunding after the EGS shit but made a few exceptions. I think I am 100% done with crowdfunding now unless it is from a studio that I have backed before and did everything they promised.

Yeah, I've done the same.

It's like they think we are "lap dogs" or something. Do this. Do that.
Dropping our hard earned money apparently is no longer enough.
So now I have to find people to drop money on their game as well, otherwise I'll be locked out of certain content?

Forget it.

Major update & full release is coming soon, as well as a slight price increase.
Hey there folks!

The Spring Update should now be live, with a plethora of changes and new content! With the addition of the difficulty options, side quests and background quests, your Solastan experience is getting closer and closer to the final release. Well bugs and polish aside of course, Early Access has proved quite effective at finding and squashing them so far! But enough talk, it's time to dive into the patch notes.

Spring Patch Sales & Price Increase
Solasta will be discounted when the Spring Update hits the store on March 25th until March 31st, after which the price of the game will increase from $35 to $40 in anticipation of the 1.0 release. This is due to the fact that Steam prevents games from discounting within 30 days of a price increase, so we unfortunately cannot increase the price when 1.0 gets released while also having a launch discount. So if you want to jump in Solasta at Early Access price, make sure you don't miss the Spring Update sales!
