Would be nice if Deck gets more devs to think about interoperability of controller and keyboard/mouse inputs rather than games hitching when swapping, having the UI change constantly when going back and forth, or being locked to just one or the other.
This was one of my biggest gripes with the Steam Controller. When a developer did it right (see Deus Ex Mankind Divided) it’s awesome.
Hoping the Deck is successful enough that developers continue to consider accommodating the Steam Controller as a side benefit.

Steam Deck verification status is online on Steam Store, but everything has Unknown status so far.

Edit. It looks like Valve is turning it on and off constantly. Maybe it is not ready after all?

it's not ready, they are testing things at this moment.

Boo! Do these get uploaded to the Steamworks Youtube channel afterwards?
Yes, it is also confirmed to have localization to multiple languages once it's up on YT's steamworks channel, but it will probably take a week or two.

We were all extremely naive to hope and expect this to make 2021.
Just today I spoke to a colleague at work who told me the computers ordered in november 2020....about 200 of them....are still undelivered.

Don’t think there will be another delay, I’m actually surprised by this one. They have made such a push getting out dev kits and also pushing out the message.
imo its part of the reason for delay
  • sending in xmas period is always bad idea
  • the ship shortage and stuff
  • they did sent tons of devkits all around the world from randomass korean mini teams to big pubs like CDP or heads of Sony

=> which must be logistically quite the task as well as huge amount of feedback on moth SW and HW side of things from the devkits

so ultimately its gonna be better for it

Yeah i dont see delays as bad things to be honest, means the thing isn't ready and so i'd rather they take more time and then send me a finished product.

Too often games these days are shipped with a load of issues that then need patching. Puts me off buying things day one. Hardware is a bit different i guess but still dont mind waiting if it means less likely to get initial faults.

I don't want to sound negative on it, I love the Deck and I play on it more than anything else currently, but from a software development perspective it feels more than 1.5 months away from a public, end-user release to me.

I'm confident and positive Valve won't be able to provide the 1st consumer batch before July.
Nah I expect that will happen (before July).

You mean you are still seeing big changes to UI and other things, or does it also have big issues with stability? I could see Valve shipping it early (if other circumstances allowed it), if it's just a few final touches that are missing. Of course, if there's real "show stoppers" then that's another question.

Well, I should only talk about our own games, so as an example ToCS4 crashes every ~30 minutes with the default Proton configuration. Also, pretty significant chunks of the UI are still missing and getting added, but that's public knowledge.

I understand, I didn't perceive it as negative, more as a matter-of-fact statement. I want the final release to be as polished as possible so hopefully the delay will help in that regard.

The trackpads seem great to me. Smooth and precise, and I particularly like the feedback on "clicks". I actually thought they had a hardware click and was wondering how they managed to integrate that with the force sensor until I figured out (when the deck was off) that the click feeling was entirely virtual.

Developing for Steam Deck without a Dev-Kit

We’ve just updated partner site documentation with a new article, “How to Develop for Steam Deck without a Dev-Kit”. You might notice that this sounds very similar to a talk happening at tomorrow’s Steamworks Virtual Conference. You’re not wrong - this article is basically the contents of tomorrow’s talk by the same name. Feel free to look it over and come to tomorrow’s session with your questions ready, or just watch the session tomorrow if you prefer listening to reading.

Along with these docs, we have released the SteamOS Devkit Client and SteamOS Devkit Service applications on Steam. These free tools allow you to connect your dev PC to another PC running Linux, to push builds, grab traces, and debug your games in a Linux environment (perfect for developing for Steam Deck). If you already have a dev-kit you no longer need to reach out to us for additional keys, just download it directly.

Similarly, if you’re testing Steam Deck compatibility with your own hardware (as per the new article above), you can just download the Devkit Client app to your dev PC, and the Devkit Service app to your Linux box. Links to download these tools and instructions for use can be found here.
