I want to make this a community thread for fans of the saints row series and discussion about future games! Personally, I'm a big fan of 2, it was the right balance of serious and comedy. The map was near perfect too, it had the suburbs, beaches, casinos, poor neighborhoods, and even an evil underground lab! Sadly, the next two games failed to capture that magic especially the map which i felt was severely lacking. Hopefully, the next game will be more like 2 in map and tone.

oooh, nice idea for a thread! :)

and yeah - i, on the other hand, really liked 3 and 4 :p

really hoping we'll get 5 soon

(oh, by the way - you might want to fix that title ... capitalize it or something :p oh, and adding a cover to the thread might be a cool idea ... just some suggestions)

Ayyye! I was just looking into these games earlier today.

Does anyone know how the modding SDK ended up working out for Saints Row 4? I was part of the modding community for a bit, but that was long before the SDK was released. Any particularly cool mods out there for the games other than stuff like Gentleman of the Row (Absolutely awesome, but also ubiquitous.).

Saint's Row is one of my top 5 series of all time. It's funny you made this thread as I was just reading the Saint's Row reddit page for updates on 5. It kills me that Deep Silver is publishing Volition games as we all know what will happen when 5 releases.

I'm not even going to mention the first one. I liked the 3rd one the most and the 4th was just dumb fun. I couldn't get into the second because I want balls to the wall insanity. Gat out of Hell was... eh, that one was pretty boring. There wasn't anything memorable like riding a raptor.

I bought a bundle of saints row games on steam because they had all been ported to Linux. That was years ago, when there were a lot less Linux games and there was no proton. Without that motivation, I probably wouldn't have bought the games.

I started playing 2 and I really liked it. Unfortunately the Linux Port is really janky. I should go back and force it through proton. See how it runs like that.

Sounds weird, but it was I really liked about it was the tone. I was never a big fan of the grand theft auto games, but I have enjoyed them for hours and hours. Maybe the thing I liked most about them was the loads of absurd dark humor. From what I played of saints row 2, they copied that well. A lively copy. A somehow original copy.

I'm talking like I'm going to go play it or something lol. Okay. I'm going to go see if I can install it with proton and at least dabble for a sec.

Corrected but I'm no good with cover pics lol. Also, I started out hating 3, I felt it was a downgrade in most areas: the map, story, too many sex jokes, certain character changes. Years went by I don't hate it as much as I did back then but most of my criticisms are still there. 4 was pretty damn awesome though despite jumping the shark lol.

I've played 2, 3, 4 and Gat (no PC version for 1) and remember them as very fun. Compared to GTA4, SR3 was on par and even better on some things. I dont know if the superhero stuff in later games was really an improvement for the series.

Gat out of Hell wasn't great, but I've loved every game that's come to PC.
2 being broken as fuck was part of its charm, 3 was just over the top enough, 4 was so over the top it had come out the other side, and the Stan Bush reference sold me.

I'm not sure where they take the series, but then again every volition game seems to be in the Saints Row/Freespace universe, so I guess it could be anything.

Saints Row 2 is one of my top five favorite games of all time, 3 is in my bottom five. It’s such a disparity but they really didn’t seem to get what made 2 so great - it wasn’t a wacky sense of humor or a reliance on memes, it was the mind-boggling amounts of customization, from your character to your crew to your vehicles. Saints Row 2 is a game about rising to the top. If Saints Row 3 is a game about being at the top and enjoying it, why is there so much... LESS of everything? Yeah, I guess the weapons make bigger explosions, but there’s so much less of them, and the vehicles had VTOLs and hover bikes but I couldn’t customize them as much and there were just so many fewer vehicles at all. And then in 4 they were rendered completely pointless. Don’t even get me started on how much of a kick in the balls 3’s DLC was if you bought it at launch...

Anyways, Gat Out of Hell ends so absurdly I think a reboot is the only place they can take the franchise, which I hope they use as an excuse to pick themselves back up and refocus on YOUR Boss taking things over instead of the Boss they give you cracking wise.

So weird how the entire Brotherhood storyline has like zero jokes in it and is the most gripping thing in any sandbox game, and they just... pretend it didn’t happen.

Adore this series! Stories to follow but for now... and predictably enough i'm posting this!

edit: Saints' Row has a thing about having some of the voice actors sing along to the radio or do duets. So good.

And who could forget "Crashing The Party"!? That Kanye drop-in was perfect, i got hype!

I prefer Saints' Row when it's doing all the things tonally and storywise that GTA doesn't. I remember when GTA had some personality to it before the Hauser's became fixated with Hollywood and that's when Saints' Row really started to shine for me. GTA with a touch of pantomime - Perfect.

I never played the first 2, and barely remember 3... 4 was definitely my favourite. After it, I was really hoping they would do a super-hero/villain spoof game, without all of the street gang stuff. Agents of Mayhem could have been cool, if they hadn't gone with the weird "teleport in one of the characters" thing, and instead let you make your own hero and have the other guys be your companions.

I've only played 3 and 4. I really liked 3, but 4 was so over the top that I simply loved it. I usually hate driving cars in open world games, I hate driving in real life, let alone in videogames, so going around the map with super speed, flying and whatever felt great :coffee-blob:

I have a strong dislike for Saints Row The Third, but I love the hell out of SR2 and I enjoyed SR4 a ton. I was just remembering that kinda tease from a community rep regarding they possibly finding the source code for SR2 other day. Hope they actually did it and are planning some announcement this year still.

this is what I'm hoping. also, with the source code found, maybe they can re-impliment some things they couldn't in the third and fourth one.

also, thanks lash!

I liked SR3 most, but SR2 was great as well. Sadly, the series is being published by Deep Silver, and I'd rather stick my head in the arse of a pig than giving that shitty company my money.

Looking at some of my old Saints Row content, I had a ton of fun modding around in the game.

Super speed in Saints Row the Third

Bigger, Blacker Holes (Super strength black holes)

Super Strength Force Gun

10x Missles for the air strike

Replace the default Saints Row IV mech with a cooler, bigger, faster, stronger one. (I put a stupid amount of time into making those sloppy missles shoot out in a cool pattern.) It also includes my mortal launcher mod where you shoot missles up in the sky, then they fly to wherever you're aiming.

Laser Whip mod. Basically just multistage energy orbs. Come out, hover in place, then BOOM fire off.

Damn, Saints Row games were a lot of fun.

I own Saints Row for the Xbox 360 (the console no longer works).
I own Saints Row 2, 3 and 4 on PC.

I never played a single entry in the series. :giggle:

My brother is crazy about the series, but I bought them, and I never actually played them. Well, ok, I did a mission of the first game, but just to try the game out.
I was hoping for a PC port of Saints Row 1 (I hate playing sequels without playing the previous games), but that never materialized, so the series has remained unplayed so far.

What would be a good entry for a newbie, in terms of storyline, if 1 is not an option?
I know the series isn't particularly known for the story depth, but I would still hate to miss out on understanding something.

start with 2! In one the gist is:

your created character is caught in a gang shootout while minding your own business when the saints leader, julius, saves you. You decide to join and after the "initiation", julius has you help the lieutenants: Dex, lin, troy, and Gat in taking over stilwater. You succeed with the only casualty being Lin as she was killed by the rollerz.. In the Vice kings arc, you had an inside person named aisha whose death you faked in order to securely get her out of the vice kings. She and Johnny Gat are romantically involved.

After taking over the city, Julius is arrested. Richaard Hughes, a corrupt politician, and Monroe, the chief of police use this tot heir advantage and have them kill the current mayor running for re-election. Soon after, Dex and the player assassinate Monroe and a bunch of cops at the mayor's funeral. Hughes calls the protagonist to meet at his yacht and plans to kill him then and there. However, before he can make the attempt, a bomb blows up the boat. At the same time, it shows a few scenes of the gang and it reveals that Troy was a police informant.

In SR2, your character starts off awaking from a coma.

This was a big part of why I loved SR4 as well. I hate driving as well, but running and flying and jumping is a blast.

I loved the Super Hero freedom of movement in SR4 but i still cruised around in vehicles so i could listen to the radio. Usually when i wanted a break between missions and mayhem or if i was messing about doing side activities.

I was the sort of GTA player that always ended up doing just enough missions to unlock cool stuff and then just spent my time entertaining myself by doing wheelie and endos on motorbikes along Ocean Beach in Vice City listening to Wave 103 and V-Rock wearing the gaudiest suit i could buy. Give me a Sniper Rifle and a fast road with a curve and a junction and i'll spend ages sniping tires to see what kind of chaos happens. It's why San Andreas annoyed me with the Turf War stuff at times, "Have you seen this sweet jump i think i've found? I don't care if someone's invading my turf. Gosh."

Saints' Row 4 does have the "Minty Fresh" achievement so it's still much better... and i need a knitted jumper like the one you wear in "When the Saints saved Christmas" DLC. Need it.

speaking of mods, if you're itching to play 2 on pc, i recommend the gentleman of the row mod. it contains some pc fixes and extra goodies. though it doesn't fix the cutscene glitch where the physics get wonky because of the higher framrate sadly.

I'm sure i used Saints' Row Powertools to help with cutscene glitches? There was also a speedtest map that could help dial in a multiplier to make the game run closer to proper speed. If i remember right, SR2's timers are tuned to the 360's clock speed and the further you deviate from that the wonkier the game is.

Gentlemen of the Row is most definitely a required mod for SR2 though. It's fully customisable so you can just have the fixes without any of the extra mods.

I'm fairly confident that Volition are making Saints Row 5. A new Red Faction seems to be in development, but it was likely handed off to one of THQN's studios since DS and THQN weren't partners at that point.

The best way to play Saints Row 2 currently is via Xbox One Backwards Compatibility. Once RPCS3/Xenia matures a bit more, that will be an option. The PC port is absolutely horrific.

This. The original PC port of Saint's Row 2 was so buggy as hell. Gentleman of the Row improves on it so much that it is the best way to play the game on PC.

There's even a version of the mod made for Saints' Row: The Third called Gentlemen of Steelport if you are curious.

Yah. On linux tho. There's a linux version, but I was forcing it to install thru proton to see how it ran. Turns out it runs pretty good... on the character creation screen lol.
damn, i'm guessing that you can't install gentleman of the row on there either then?

It patches and smooths some bugs and glitches, it also has a ton of optional extra models/AI and items.
It's worth installing for the patches alone even if you don't bother with the other stuff.
