Developer: Deck13

Platforms : Steam , Xbox , Ps4
Story:

On the way to Jericho City, your plane is shot down by a mysterious storm and crash-lands in the outskirts. You wake up weeks later in a derelict detention facility inside the city. Armor-clad soldiers enforce Martial Law, robots are on a rampage, and a dark, expanding nanostorm looms over the cityscape...

Me Myself And You:

One of the more interesting changes from surge 2 is you now make your own hero Everything from your gender, to hair colour and style, skin colour, clothing, and more can be customized as you see fit.

The City And Design:

One of the reasons Deck13 chose to set the game in a city as opposed to the more confined setting of the first game was so they could address one of the biggest criticisms for it, and introduce more environmental variety. Jericho City is an urban landscape, which has allowed the developers to display much more variety in the environments that players will be visiting. That said, the changes and improvements are going to be more than just aesthetic…

we tried to be aware of what made The Surge unique. So we opted to stick to the idea of having only one save point per level (for the most part!) and utilized what the setting – a vast city center – gave us to connect everything smartly.

Not only while exploring the alleys of Downtown Jericho – all areas in the game offer a network of clever, interconnected streets, indoor locations, tunnels, even super efficient ziplines players can utilize to unlock the game world for themselves – one step at a time.

Some of these areas are accessible as soon as players set their first foot into Jericho City, though we make sure that there is a 'recommended order' gated by the difficulty of gameplay encounters. Players may still try to challenge themselves by choosing their own route through the game – and might discover some unique interactions this way.

This Is My Limb:

The limb targeting system – the best thing about the entire first game – is, of course, returning. For those not aware, it allows the player to target different body parts of enemies and dismember them with precision (and glorious brutality). When enemies die or when their limbs or body parts are dismembered, they drop gear, weapons, and equipment that you can then pick up for your own use. This also means that if you want specific loot that an enemy is carrying, those specific body parts need to be cut off. there is now over 80 weapons (original surge had 5).

but we have some new little tricks aswell

Parry System:
There is now a parry system called Directional Blocking. This will allow players to parry incoming attacks in the direction they are coming from. If done successfully, it leaves the attacker in a vulnerable state for a devastating counter attack.

Drones and weapon types:

The new combat drone will give players a variety of different ranged and utility options to survive the challenging fights, while the nine weapon types will let players choose their own preferred close combat style.

Charged Attacks:
All weapon types will feature charged attacks that are especially handy when fighting against shielded enemies or enemies that use attachments to buff up their combat abilities. Sometimes also just to quickly gather more combat energy.

Combo System:

The combo system of all weapons has been reworked quite a bit and combo attacks in general are now much more powerful. Some are particularly effective against armored body parts and others against unarmored body parts.

Partial Set Bonuses:
All gear sets will now not only have a special set bonus when fully equipped but will also feature a partial set bonus that is active once 3 parts of the set are worn.

Leveling up Character Stats:
And last but not least leveling up your Core Power will now not only let you equip heavier gear and use more implants but will also grant you 2 Module Points that you can spend to level up one of your base character stats: health, stamina and battery efficiency.

Implant Me:

As anyone who’s played The Surge would tell you, implants are a pretty vital component of the gameplay. In The Surge 2, there are going to be a lot more implants than there were in the first game. From those that give you some health back on every kill, to others that give your batteries more lasting life, to one that can even aid you with directional blocking, there’s going to be a lot of options for you to play around with.

One of the coolest and most fitting aspects of NieR:Automata was the customisability of its HUD. Slotting in a few components would allow you a set of controls usually reserved for game menus — enemy health bars, noise meters, you name it. Fitting, given you’re an android.

There’s a lite version of this in The Surge 2, and it’s very welcome — even if it’s just to serve as a tutorial for the combat’s more nuanced aspects. Slot in one implant and you’ll see enemy health bars as well as poise bars. Slot in another, and an indicator will show you which direction incoming attacks come from. All the better to parry them with — though these “educational” implants cost a lot of space, so we get the feeling they’re intended to be replaced quickly. Players will want to learn those enemy movesets to parry them without training wheels, and slot in some more advanced implants.

We All Like Fluid Around Here:

animation recieved alot of love compared to the first game in that everything human is now motion captured and then editied afterwards for certain moves/motions etc.

Anyone For Sexting ?

Players can also leave graffiti messages on the walls for other players to see and gain clues and hints about the environment or fights against enemies or bosses.

This looks cool, and your OT almost makes me wanna play the game. Sadly these games tend to be waaay too difficult for me, and I get frustrated pretty fast

I hope it lives up to my expectations.
The one thing from the trailers that I'm sad about is that the duck& hop thing is still in there. Kind of hated that mechanic in the first game and never used it.

Amazing OT queen.

I feel with the single Save point per level along with increased verticality and structure to the levels that it feels like a Metroidvania cross this time as opposed to a Souls like game but with mechs.

Would certainly love to try out the game and it'll likely go onto my Christmas list.

Thank you for the excellent OT! The new features are interesting and definitely makes me hyped.

I hope devs did something about unskippable slowdowns that occur whenever the opponent is 'harvested'; having to watch it over and over in 1 got tiring.

Wow, I never knew that you can actually create your own character now, and I've seen multiple trailers and gameplay footage.

Excited for this, but I don't really have the time and budget to play it right away.

I loved The Surge the first go around and was only able to play it because of Queen

I like how they're doing Graffiti messages to other players in a system sort of like Dark soulsy

Here's one of my favorite screenshots from the last game I took from when I died to a boss:

Polearms/Staves/2handers for the win

Everything I've read about it is it's basically making everything better so that's really cool

I have only played for a couple of hours, but this feels like a really good Dark Souls clone

I enjoyed the first game, especially its unique free form customization system based on power armors, but it had this unappetizing oppressiveness about it. The levels were barren, hostile and claustrophobic, mostly office/industrial areas, but the small number of outdoors areas felt the same. In addition to this, the lore was substandard as well, so the levels mostly felt like generic Dark Souls style obstacle courses. I thought some of those obstacle courses were quite clever, but the lasting impression you were left with was that the levels weren't very memorable. The uncharismatic main character and often boring plot made things even worse, encouraging many people to abandon the game after only a couple of hours.

As far as I have played, the sequel resolves most of the main issues with the first game. The game starts out in a beautiful post-apocalyptic city that has obviously improved environmental variety. There are oppressive moments, but they are now well balanced against more easygoing gameplay moments, and a larger focus on interactions with NPCs. The exploration feels extremely rewarding, including a large number of clever shortcuts and some pretty neat hidden areas with bonus items. The plot has been open (you create your own character), mysterious and satisfying.

Meanwhile, the power armor customization and combat are still as addictive and fun as in the first game. When you meet a powerful non-respawning enemy, you have to strategically consider what body part you want to cut off to enhance your own character, and it is a very real possibility that you will fail and leave empty handed. So, combat works on at least three levels, where the win/lose state is one level, resource management is a second, and maximizing gained items is a third.

I would highly recommend this game for Dark Souls fans!

patch coming soon

Our current priorities
  • Stutters and performance issues

While we we work on improving the performances, we advise you to activate adaptative v-sync and nvidia triple buffering. It should improve your framerate.
  • Investigate and fix various crashes at launch

we also strongly advise to check our technical FAQ if you're having any issue.

We hope to be able to share a first update in a Beta branch really soon to get your feedback about it.

The game is pretty good and I don't feel it's a Dark Souls clone, tbh. Being able to attack specific appendages for extra damage or rewards is great. You want that sweet weapon? You'll have to deal with that armored arm. You want to kill this guy off quick? Go for the appendage with no armor. The customizable UI isn't what I expected, but very welcome. I like being able to use a chip that helps me determine which way to parry. The combat feels good and there are a lot of shortcuts to open. The dodging is hilarious because you jump like twelve feet away, but it feels necessary with how much movement there is in the game. Not to mention some guys have projectiles, but they're dicks.

So far I would say the game is worth buying on its own merits and not just for being a "Souls clone."

As already said, amazing OT ! :cat-heart-blob:
I'm really liking what I played of the first one, it has evident flaws but the potential is here.

i refunded the game in the end, the game has alot of performance issues on pc, volemtric lgithing is likely bugged considering theres no visual difference between low and very high setting apart from a huge fps gain.

the game is also over shot color wise too

few screens taken from steam community

A friend gifted it to me so I played a bit just now. As Queen said, it has weird performance issues that lead to stutter that doesn't seem to make any sense (it happened on both max and lowest settings). It's sad, because what I played so far is a better version of a game I already liked, but having stutters during combat can lead to some shitty moments in a souls-like. I'll probably wait until they patch it.

devs said its due to texture streaming issue they are trying to fix which also leads to another issue that texture streaming is prettydire at times and reminds me of old unreal 3 games with the pop in lol

Yeah, I saw that too, but didn't stop to think that could be the culprit :D

I wonder if things will improve if I move the game to the SSD.

For what it is worth, I have only had occasional stutters on my (admittedly overpowered) system, restricted to some specific areas. Gideon's Rock was quite bad, but the central (starting) area and Port Nixon were mostly stutter free.

Specs: 2080 ti curve overclock, 9900k@5.0, 16 Gb RAM @3600

No real improvements on the stuttering front, sadly. I also got to the first big boss in the game and the same issue they had with these in the first Surge is present here as well (the camera sucks big time).
