Void Bastards

Strategy first-person shooter Void Bastards will launch for Xbox One and PC on May 29, publisher Humble Bundle and developer Blue Manchu announced.

Inspired by BioShock and System Shock 2, Void Bastards is a revolutionary new strategy-shooter that will test your wits as well as exercise your aim.
Can you lead the misfit prisoners of the Void Ark through the derelict spaceships and myriad dangers of the Sargasso Nebula?

Forget everything you know about first-person shooters: Void Bastards asks you to take charge, not just point your gun and fire. Your task is to lead the rag-tag Void Bastards out of the Sargasso Nebula. You make the decisions: where to go, what to do and who to fight. And then you must carry out that strategy in the face of strange and terrible enemies.

On board derelict spaceships you’ll plan your mission, taking note of the ship layout, what hazards and enemies you might encounter and what terminals and other ship systems you can use to your advantage..

Move carefully through the dangerous ships, searching for supplies and manipulating control systems. React to what you find - will you detour to the generator to bring the power back online or will you fight your way into the security module to disable the ship’s defenses? Choose carefully when to fight, when to run and when just to be a bastard.

Use your hard won supplies to improvise tools and weapons, from the distracting robo-kitty to the horribly unstable clusterflak.

Navigate your tiny escape pod through the vast nebula. Flee from void whales and pirates, and politely avoid the hungry hermits. All the while you must keep scavenging for the food, fuel, and other resources that keep you alive.

Void Bastards features a 12-15 hour campaign that you can complete with an endless supply of prisoners, each with their own unique traits. When one dies, another steps forward to carry on the fight. Don’t worry though, as any crafting progress you’ve made is retained from one to another.

It looks amazing but just to be clear, this isnt a "roguelike" and is a handcrafted campaign ala Bioshock/Systemshock right? I wonder what they mean by "strategy/shooter".

i think the ships might be procedurally generated from pre-made blocks

arts&crafts Here's the IGN video showing 18 minutes of gameplay which should give you a good idea of what to expect.

I think it's a Strategy/Shooter because you have an FTL-like node map with events & resources that you travel around gathering what resources you need before moving on to the next. The Shooter part takes place on each derelict you scavenge for resources, it also looks strategic as there are different weapons and enemies to deal with as they will flank you or engage if you trigger alarms etc.

Thanks! I will check this out when I get home.

Seems like a better done Bunker Punks, not to put that game down, it might evolve into good shit too as it's ea. Edit: oh wait, it's not ea any more. Err. I haven't played it in a while maybe it's really cool now, don't judge it by this post, lol.

Well fuck. I just bought Three Kingdoms and was hoping I was set for a while. But maybe just one more game this month...
That makes two of us. Honestly if it weren't for the 25% off voucher for owning System Shock 2 on Steam I probably would have held off.

I managed to get about an hour in and I'm really enjoying it so far.

blindrhythm Thanks for the coupon! I remembered i've had System Shock 2 in my inventory for a good few years and two seconds after adding it to my library i got a coupon delivered. Nice.

... and bought!

I know what i'm doing tonight as well as installing Ace Combat 7 to see how shiny it looks on my new rig.
Nice! Congrats on the new rig too! (y)

And you're going to love AC7 if you haven't played it yet. It wasn't my favorite in the series but still a ton of fun and definitely a stunning game visually with everything maxed out.

blindrhythm Thanks! It's not exactly a new rig as i updated my mobo, cpu, mem & psu in november last year from i5 3580K to Ryzen 2700X and then upgraded my GTX1080 to an RTX 2070 and new monitor to handle it earlier this year.

I'm about 10 minutes away from starting the Steam installs... can't wait.

Get the Tydy DLC now and discover:
  • Three new Tydy ships with brand new ship modules and challenges.
  • The inadvertently dangerous Tydy bot.
  • The health boosting Whackuum weapon.
  • Roaming Tydy vans.
Clean up your messy nebula with the Tydy DLC! Tydy adds a whole new org to Void Bastards as well as a brutal new weapon, a fiendishly dangerous new opponent, new ships to loot and the opportunity to collect additional heart starters, giving you a chance to keep your favourite client alive or beat that ironman challenge.

Tydy vans roam the nebula dispensing neat-freak Tydy bots into every ship they visit. Although Tydy bots aren’t hostile, to them you’re just another dirty, dirty object to be vacuumed clean. Unfortunately for you, Tydy vacuums suck the very air out of your lungs, making it hard to hang around.

The good news is that parts from Tydy ships can be repurposed by clever clients and used to build your own vacuum device: the whackuum. The whackuum not only dishes out damage to your enemies, it can suck blood from citizens and slag out of mechanical foes. It’s a double whammy!

But perhaps the choicest delight that Tydy offers up is the chance to rip out an ignition plug from a combustion chamber on a Tydy furnace ship. This plug can easily be turned into a makeshift heart starter, giving you that jolt back to life when you’ve been living life on the edge. Watch out though, because the furnace is a dangerous place…

Rumour has it that other goodies can be recovered from Tydy ships due to the large amount of discarded junk that the Tydy bots have been known to collect.

Good.

That game really needed more content. Gets...repetitive around endgame.

It gets repetitive if you avoid endgame like the plague too! heh.
It's very much a game where i'll play an hour or two every week or so and i'm happy with that. Good to see them adding more stuff i really do like the game.
