Frontier Developments plc ( leading developer and publisher of videogames based in Cambridge, announces an exclusive IP licence (the "Licence") with Games Workshop to develop and publish a real-time strategy game within the rich and extensive world of Warhammer Age of Sigmar.

Warhammer Age of Sigmar is Games Workshop's most recent iteration of the globally renowned fantasy setting in which the four Grand Alliances of Order, Chaos, Death and Destruction vie for control of the Mortal Realms. Unique and distinct in style, and endless in scope, this ever growing universe sits alongside the far future dystopia of Warhammer 40,000 as the most successful tabletop miniatures games in the world.

Under the terms of the Licence, Frontier has the exclusive rights to develop and publish a real-time strategy game worldwide on PC and console platforms, together with the rights for streaming services. The game is planned for release in Frontier's financial year ending 31 May 2023 ("FY23").

I read a bunch of the old Warhmmer 40k lore, and played some Warhammer Fantasy roleplay for awhile. I know nothing about Age of Sigmar. I dunno, hopefully it's good? There has been so many crappy licensed Games Workshop games that I can't ever be excited for anything until there are results to look at.

In short GW took dynamite and blew up the old world and everything you know. Then they took everything and put it in a mixer with a lot of glue.

Chaos destroyed the world and ended reality itself, but Sigmar and Archaon kept on fighting and after an endless amount of time Sigmar himself formed new realms with the help of an almighty star dragon.
Those eight realms are condensed from the old winds of magic. So you have the realm of fire, the realm of heavens, metal etc.
All realms inherited characteristics from their respective winds of magic. The Fire Realm (Aqshy?!) is for example build from lava and volcanoes.
Lizardmen traveled in space ships but started dying off until only Slann remained, but one certain almighty Slann became so powerful that he literally thought Lizardmen back into existence. I'm not kidding here.
Then there was War, heroes were reborn, some fused into new entities, Sigmar literally created Space Marines from 40k etc.Chaos started destroying things again, some realms worked together to stop them. But the alliance is rather fragile.
Skaven managed to push their horned rat into true godhood etc.
Some of the stuff is so bad, it's not even funny.

That sounds like they bought a fanfic story and made it their new product.

They went as far away from their roots in medieval dark fantasy as possible, even renamed all the races. Elves are for example now called Aelves.
You can not hold intellectual control over "wood elves" but Sylvaneth is their creation and therefore protected and for their use only.

It really backfired with the community though.

Yeah, it backfired something fierce but they seem to have won over the grunt of their fan base by now. I suppose there are still many, myself included, that lament the end of the old warhammer.

But more than that, I have to doubt to logic behind this nuclear move. GW was tired of being ripped off ? But they themselves ripped others off. And let's be logic... I'm a game maker, I want to rip off the Sylvaneth. Ok, I change some key visual details and call them Wood Elves, and voila !
What did this move prevent, again ?

Afaik they announced changes and a reorientation back to the roots.
For your second question: It was the most widespread theory in the community back then and GW had indeed a couple of license problems for quiet some time. But I stopped following AoS when it launched and never cared again. For the logic behind it: It's GW, they sometimes like to smell their own farts, not everything they do follow logic.
40k also started going down a strange road lately: Space Marines are now called Primaris Marines for example and are even more badass now (lore wise). They are meant to eventually replace "space" marines.
