We Happy Few | Compulsion Games

We Happy Few is the tale of a plucky bunch of moderately terrible people trying to escape from a lifetime of cheerful denial in the city of Wellington Wells. In this alternative 1960s England, conformity is key. You’ll have to fight or blend in with the drug-addled inhabitants, most of whom don’t take kindly to people who won’t abide by their not-so-normal rules.

Discover the retrofuturistic city’s dark history as you play through the intertwined narratives of three quietly rebellious citizens of Wellington Wells, each with their own strengths and weaknesses, as they face their pasts, prepare for the future, and engage in activities that aren’t exactly status quo in the artificially enthused society.

Retrofuturistic 1960s England
Set in retrofuturistic 1960s England, you will find a city ravaged by war and rebuilt by delusionally happy people. Everything appears joyful in Wellington Wells, including its roads, its people, and its omnipresent television personality: Uncle Jack! But, it’s actually a world on the brink of collapse. Come unveil its dark history, and discover how and why its residents came to be so beguilingly happy.

Three Interwoven Narratives
Play as three flawed characters who explore their own connections to the events surrounding the rebuilding of Wellington Wells. They each have a unique storyline in which they interpret and react to the events around them in different ways. As you hide, conform, or fight back as each of them, you will encounter dark humour, a spot of hope, and even some redemption along the way.

A Dystopia of Your Very Own
In We Happy Few, no two playthroughs are alike. While the citizens of Wellington Wells will always want to ensure that you’ve taken your Joy, the procedurally generated world will ensure that your experience with We Happy Few is different and unique. Wellington Wells is never quite like you remember it.

Take Your Joy…or Don’t. The Choice is Yours
Customize your We Happy Few experience:
• Choose from a range of difficulties for new and experienced players alike,
• Masochistic? Try permadeath!,
• Collect recipes, scavenge items, and craft dozens of weapons, tools, and devices,
• Creep, crush, or conform your way through puzzles and encounters, and
• Fight with the crazy weapons you can craft, or fight with your bare hands and don’t kill anyone!

This patch contains Arcade Mode, including three separate new ways to play We Happy Few. It also includes infrastructure to handle the upcoming DLC, and general performance optimizations, crash fixes, fixes for progression blockers, fixes for gameplay bugs, and localization fixes.

Arcade Mode

Arcade Mode is a free game update for We Happy Few which contains three new modes that will showcase a different part of the We Happy Few experience: Survival, Night’s Watch, and Sandbox.

  • Survival

Survival is a return to the Early Access survival experience, designed for those of you who enjoyed the survival experience in the past. You will need to hunt for food, water and shelter, and you’ll need to use all of the stealth, crafting, and combat skills at your disposal to last as long as you can in Wellington Wells.
  • Night’s Watch (previously known as Wellie mode)

Night’s Watch brings to life one of the most requested characters by the community, allowing you to play as the most notorious Bobby, Constable Constable. As a constable, and a man of high duty, you’ll need to keep all the filthy Downers out of town through fast paced combat while making sure you do not run out of Joy.

  • Sandbox

Sandbox is a non-narrative / non-goal based game mode, which allows you to experiment with world generation systems and gameplay options. This isn’t a skill based mode rather than a calmer experience, designed for players who want the freedom to create their own version Wellington Wells.

Finally, we have just about fulfilled the last of our Kickstarter requirements. With Arcade Mode coming out, we’ve completed all our project stretch goals! We’re just about finished with the final physical rewards, including the final parts of the collector’s box. Thank you all for your patience.

first DLC out

James & Roger return in an all-new We Happy Few story. Wellington Wells stands besieged by a robot uprising, but the mechanized menace isn't the only thing threatening to tear our pair apart. Play as Roger and team up with your boyfriend James to Find Dr. Faraday, explore a vast underground laboratory, and discover the source of the robot invaders before it's too late!

James & Roger in They Came Below adds fresh content to We Happy Few:
  • Enjoy a brand new story in Wellington Wells with a classic sci-fi twist
  • Adventure into handcrafted new areas, like Dr. Faraday's secret laboratory
  • Test the mettle (and metal) of a cadre of new robot foes
  • Take up shining new weapons and tools like the transforming ray gun and the time-slowing Chronobomb
  • Uncover the puzzling purpose of the Curious Device and feel clever doing it
  • Stay focused on the mission--there's no time to craft, eat, or sleep in a town on the fritz
  • Challenge yourself in a new boss fight unlike any other in We Happy Few

Joy! I just checked and it's in my collection already so i know what i'm playing tonight!
I really enjoyed this game and i've an itch to start a new game in the Sandbox after giving Night's Watch a couple of rounds the other day.

Very nearly my GOTY last year, loved this game.

It's tricky. Basically you pop out of a Copper Popper at a Town Square and run about punching Downers to collect coins to pay for your Blackberry Joy. It's basically a wave-based arena mode where the arena is a small village so it's easy to get overwhelmed but i enjoy it for a quick 10 minutes or so before i jump into my main game.

JOY. Sex. Rock N’ Roll. All is not what it seems for Nick Lightbearer. Unravel his story on July 30th in the next DLC update for We Happy Few.

In this groovy thriller and second piece of DLC for We Happy Few, you play as Nick Lightbearer, notorious Wellington Wells rockstar and Joy aficionado. But Joy, sex and rock n’roll comes with a killer price.

Nice, i really liked "They Came From Below" and i'm looking forward to this DLC. I keep returning to WHF every now and then to wander around and look for stuff i missed. Nice surprise for next week for me as i knew it was coming but haven't logged in to Steam for a while.

I love the universe Compulsion have made with WHF, the art and art style is phenomenal, the music and voice acting, character and story all fit together like a jigsaw. I missed all of the game/quest breaking bugs on my play-through so i really have nothing bad to say about the game.

Can't wait!

I really have to give this game a go.

It's embarrassing: I was a kickstarter backer, so I have owned this game for ages (including the Season Pass), and I'm yet to even launch it. :giggle:

Maybe I'll wait for the 3rd DLC to be out.
When is it launching (is it known)?

The final chapter of We Happy Few. Coming soon.

This add-on presents an independent story set in the district town of Wellington Wells. Its plot revolves around the secrets of the past of the metropolis and its inhabitants. Just like any bearable lucky mask, all societies have cracks in the veneer - but does this mean that we are allowed to dig out dangerous secrets?

Releasing November 19th

You’ve taken your Joy, but now it’s time to tear it all down in this final piece of handcrafted Season Pass content. Play as Victoria Byng, get a grip on her whip, and get the last word on the story of Wellington Wells. As Victoria reckons with her own withdrawals, the city slides deeper into Joy shortage and disorder. It’s always been Victoria’s duty to help keep things proper, but the closer she looks, the deeper the rot seems to run.

We All Fall Down climbs to the highest heights of We Happy Few gameplay yet:
  • Tour Wellington Wells at its absolute most dire
  • Crack the whip across the face of your foes in a snappy new take on combat
  • Or take the stealthy route with a shocking new dart gun
  • Take the high road as you climb across the rooftops in a new, stealthy spin on We Happy Few exploration"
  • Stick it to the system swiftly – there’s no time for eating, sleeping, and crafting while the world falls apart

God that looks so awesome, but I'm going to hold off and wait for reviews of it.
Did the patches resolve the issues reviews all seem to bring up about the base game? Daddy needs a bioshock fix and this looks to scratch that

I've been playing since launch and have had only two annoying glitches that were fixed in later patches. The main game is more like an Immersive Sim with lots of sneaking than a shooter but two of the DLCs are more FPS-like with "They Came from Below" being closest. As usual with Compulsion though the story, characters, character stories and world/environment is stunning. I play with the survival requirements turned off because i'm in it for the story and atmosphere so i can't wait for "We All Fall Down" to round it all out.

Each chapter has a different spin on the gameplay and a new viewpoint that intertwines and expands on the story/narrative. It's one of the few games where the story and world stayed with me after i closed the game.

I played some of We All Fall Down. It's perhaps a tad too linear for its own good (shades of BioShock: Infinite), but pretty darn good overall. It's just a pity very few people will ever play story DLC for singleplayer games.
