New week, new thread! What are you playing?

Final Fantasy XVI: At last, final dungeon (I presumed) appears on the world map. This game simply refuses to end and the atmosphere is so depressing. I will definitely play through it to its ending, but hell I am not collecting the achievements or replaying it in the future.

Super Robot Wars V: Dug out this one from the library due to the Y announcement. I reached stage 4. It's fun. Space Battleship Yamato music tracks are so good.

Girls' Frontline 2: A bunch of new game modes just popped up so I am putting more time into it rather than only doing dailies. Very nice.

just been Xenoblade X this week which i've been feeling very into(40+ hours in now and going to unlock flying today)

no Suikoden this week since I haven't felt like playing anything else

there's a Path of Exile 2 patch coming out on Friday that I want to check out at least a bit at some point but I probably won't end up doing that as soon as it comes out at this point

I want to practise writing, so I am going to elaborating my impressions on FFXVI. Huge late-game spoiler.

My original enthusiasm towards FFXVI began a downward spiral after defeating Bahamut. Originally, I thought the monotonous gameplay loop is the culprit – after all, the main quests are battle arenas one after another, and the side quests are always fetch-this-fetch-that, or go-to-A-then-B. But after putting some thought into the reason, I realized that there is a bigger design oversight at play: the main villain Ultima cast a spell which covered up the sky. Afterwards, the sky is always cloudy and the whole game is covered by a purple filter (like the green filter in Fallout 3) which completely destroyed all the beautiful scenery in the game. To make matters worse, wherever you go the background music is always a variant of depressive tracks.

In the respect of narrative, this makes sense - because the world is turning to shit. But in my opinion, this move should have been pushed to the very final moment of the game. At its current placement in the story, it put the players into an extremely long hollowing experience, further enhancing how monotonous of the gameplay loop. Every non-major cutscene involves characters standing face-to-face against each other, repeating the same animations during dialogues. Many of these characters are also deadpan serious, with the exception of one or two. Monotonous gameplay loop, repeating animations, serious characters, and the f**king purple filter and depressing music turned the final 1/3 of FFXVI into a painful long stretch.

In videogames, sky is a crucial element to create the proper vibe. In Red Dead Redemption 2, slowly strolling through the wilderness on horseback, look up – there is the starry sky; In Xenoblade Chronicles X, there are multiple moons in the sky. Their sizes tell you that they are very close to Planet Mira – an alien scenery that you cannot find on Earth. Back to FFXVI, the purple sky represents danger and apocalypse. Yes, the world is at the brink of destruction. “Hero, quick! Save the world!”, the sky was literally screaming. But the game proceeded to throw you 5 boring fetch quests.

I found myself dumbfounded by this dissonance. World-changing event is always a cool thing in videogames because many often this represents a result of evolving narrative or a reflection of players’ agency. But this change in FFXVI actually made the game worse – the atmosphere is so depressing and gloomy that I have difficulty putting in over 2 hours into the game per session. Bundled this with other gameplay flaws and foes, FFXVI is unsatisfying and even uncomfortable to play. What a shame, that is, because the combat was fun and many side quests had great writing. All the good perks were overshadowed by the sky.

Maybe Ultima actually won, because he is destroying my enjoyment from the game.

I spent most of my weekend on Xenoblade X.

Despite playing all the Xenoblade games and completed all of them, including the DLC/Expansions, the combat never really clicked with me. X is no exception.

However.

The exploration is so good. The OST is so good. And the combat QoL changes has made the combat servicable. Furthermore, I think the insane number of quests here is actually supporting the overall narrative, unlike the ones in the original Xenoblade Chronicles. There's even a quest that have a different outcome depending on the choice we make. I wish there are more quests like this, though.

I tried playing the WiiU version in the past and never got very far. Probably Cemu wasn't too stable at that point in time, too. Or I have other stuff to play.
Anyway, I'm still in Chapter 5. I even haven't started with the MSQ yet. Still running around clearing the basic quest queue. :flare_lmao:

New Genshin area dropped and to no ones surprise it's ridonculously gorgeous and fun to explore.
(Promo images, not mine, but it looks 1:1 in-game anyway, lol)

March has found me without an ounce of focus. Jumping from thing to thing has been my month.

The latest thing I did for an afternoon before abandonment was screw around in emulated Breath of the Wild. It's fun trying to find lines down mountains:

Note: The clips won't play in Firefox, unless there's an H.265 addon I don't know about.

I'm using a couple free games from Steam's catalog as stand-ins to track my emulation platform playtime. One for Dolphin, one for CEMU, and the Steam official Retro Arch for everything else. Since I'm precious about playtime tracking, maybe having them "count for realsies" will motivate me to play more old games.

Shield-surfing is legit one of the coolest things to do in Botw. :blobcheer:

Am I the only person who can't see the image?
