Time for some good ol' gaming controversy.

Fanboys are everywhere. Sports, Politics, Cars, everywhere. I want to know which gaming platform has (or had) you under its spell.

Don't feel bad answering, yo. There's no shame to stan for a brand as an immature youngster. Nostalgia is also powerful.
Just don't be a weird fanboy as an adult

I was hesitant to put PC in the poll since it doesn't really fit together with consoles. The technical advantages of upgradability and extreme far-reaching backwards compatibility can skew it heavily, so please, I'm not asking which platform has technical superiority etc.
Just your childish feelings

Me personally, it's PlayStation. PS1 and PS2 for nostalgic reasons as the first mature-oriented console with non-childish games I've seen. Nowadays, it's really only because of the exclusives. Sony's games just do it for me the most. (I need a PS4:cry:)

I've never been a "fan" of any platform (thankfully, I was able to play on all major consoles as life went on). With that out of the way, I voted PC, since it's the platform that I've always preferred over the others due to my own personal quirks (I need to be able to tab out from games in order to do other stuff, I like that I can customize practically everything, and part of my work makes me use the computer, so it's a dual purpose machine and not just a videogame center).

I've been a Playstation fan since I was 16. I've only had PCs growing up and Playstation was the first console I managed to get, as I couldn't get my parents to buy me consoles or even an Amiga 500 or a C64/C128.
It's not like I disliked PCs, I loved PCs, but games on PC kinda sucked compared to the competition. It didn't have the games consoles had and if a game was on both PC and Amiga, the Amiga version would usually be much better. PC had cool games like graphic adventures (which were my preferred genre on the platform) or gems like Diablo or Syndicate, but most of the popular games with my peer on the platform just weren't to my taste.
Playstation had Ridge Racer. Kaz had it right hyping Ridge Racer. Best game. It sold me the first Playstation because it was all I was playing at the arcades at the time.

Still, even tho I'm a Playstation fan, I never felt like that blinded me to not call out Sony on bullshit moves, like removing OtherOS, removing BC, going from free online to paid for online or the latest dumbness about no cross-gaming (which they finally walked back on). Well, since I decided to not buy a PS4 because it didn't have any kind of BC might make me look not like a fan, but I dunno, I still feel like a fan. I guess PC has grown so much lately, with console games coming out for it too that the PC side of my fandom makes up for the Playstation fan in me not feeling compelled to go out and buy a PS4.

Our stories are so similar lain! We never had a console but instead an Amiga 500. After that we upgraded (felt like a downgrade tho lol) to a Win95 PC. So; I've always been a PC-only gamer.

But the times I played PlayStation at cousins and friends really left a mark on me. I'll always choose a PC over any console but PlayStation would be the first one I'd get as a complementary device to my PC.

When I went to my friend's house, I'd see them insert a disk into their Amiga 500 and then we'd be playing some fun side-scroller or shmup and I'd envy those with NES and SNES at home.
When I was at home, I'd be battling with config.sys and autoexec.bat to get enough XMS memory or enough of that 640kb memory free to get a game to start, with the trusty MS-DOS manual by my side.

Still, I'll never forget that feeling when I first got to play Trolls, or got the Legend of Kyrandia games to boot, my first time with Loom or trying to not die in the alley at the start of Leisure Suit Larry. Nor will I forget the memory of my first Sound Blaster card in my newly bought PC (which was a fraud, it was sold to me as a 386DX, but it was a 386SX!!) and me spending time with the sound demo with the color blobs. Such an upgrade over the old 8086 with the internal bleeper.

I'm a fan of games, but for the sake of the topic I was never a big fan of Xbox.

I never caught interest with the system, but if someone gave me one, I would not mind keeping it & playing on it. It's just that the pool of games exclusive to the system that I have interest in are very minor compared to other systems. Maybe if somewhere down the line I do change my mind & decide to switch it up, but for now, I'll stick my guns with Playstation, Nintendo & PC.

I go where the games go :p

but if I had to choose, I'd say I have the most fond memories with Dreamcast, mostly because I mostly stopped playing games outside of a few arcade games here and there during that time period (Street Fighter 3, MvC2, Crazy Taxi), and some western PC games. Dreamcast kind of brought me back to console, it has most of the arcade games I played and some unique 1st party ones, the image quality was really good too jumping from PSX.

Dreamcast was the only Sega console I bought and it died really quick. So I can't call myself a fan for the company.

I mainly play my games on PC nowadays, but I've always been a Playstation user since I was a little kid.

PS1, PS2, PS3, PS4, even the Vita, I own(ed) them all. However, I'm not actually attached to the brand, and I never keep them for that long. I simply bought them to play the exclusives (and multiplatform games that weren't on PC), I've only had my Vita for less than a year. I still have my PS4 now, but I'm planning to sell it after Kingdom Hearts III next year. PS5 is looking even less attractive because most Japanese developers/publishers are on board with PC nowadays. Though I'll probably still buy it for a few exclusives, but definitely not at launch. I've barely seen an XBox in person as it's (except the controllers) is not a thing in my country. I've had an NDS before and I loved it, and now I have a Switch but I barely use it.

Mostly PC with some switch. I wasn't really a console person to begin with but had no dislike for any of them if you exclude practices of some. I have a lent PS4 which I rarely use. My switch I can play during breaks.

Basically at home PC, out and about switch. Switch is also my (local) CoOp machine.

After that PC of course... But I have no beef with either other platform either... It's just that I have no need for them these days. I have enough to play for a lifetime already and a few console exclusive games won't change that.
Except Nintendo a bit, those games are still the tits and I hope to buy a Switch when the first revision is out.

I would have said PlayStation a year ago or so. Realistically however, this gen their policies really rub me the wrong way. From the recent censoring of small and niche Japanese games, mass ban-waves to whole IP ranges whenever they get DDoS'd, no refunds, the cross-play BS, garbage OS which has slid backwards in ways from the PS3 OS of all things, etc...

Beyond this I don't like how the Japanese branch has been run this gen. Gravity Rush was let out to die with next to no marketing, and when it failed they shut the servers down. Screw that. Secondly, Sony no longer seems interested in securing things as exclusive. Now more than ever PC Gaming is seeing the benefit of more and more Japanese studios porting their games to PC and Steam. This is great, don't get me wrong, but previously it was Japanese games that forced me to buy PlayStations... These days, it seems Sony pursues a year of exclusivity (See World of Final Fantasy) and then whatever. I'm not the kind of person to settle for lesser versions when I know a better one is on the horizon.

So I have to vote PC and that's it I guess? Nintendo is an interesting one. I really liked the 3DS. They also have Fire Emblem, Animal Crossing, and Girls' Mode, which no other 1st-party even tries to emulate or support that style of games. Nintendo is also the last of the big-three to support 1st-party JRPG's. For that, if I could vote twice, I'd probably give Nintendo a vote too.

Not really a fan of any kind of platform holder lately. I don't consider PC really the same sort of thing, but I can replace PC with Nvidia, Intel, Steam, etc. I don't trust any of em. There was a time I was a fan of Nintendo, a diff time I was a fan of Sony, a fan of Sega, MS... Eventually they did enough stuff I didn't like and I never was a fan again.

Always been a PlayStation fan. Just seems to be where all the biggest and best games have always been.

I should mention that I mainly play games for the story, and for this reason most of Nintendo's catalogue does not resonate with me.

Microsoft has very few exclusives relative to PlayStation so I've never wanted to invest money into that ecosystem.

I haven't owned a console since the SNES and I only had that because it was a gift from a cousin that didn't use it anymore. I never bought any games for it besides the ones my cousin gave me. I've always been a computer guy and I don't plan on ever buying a console unless Valve makes a SteamOS one. There are a few console exclusive games I'd like to play but the amount of control I have over the experience on PC is not something I want to settle on. So I'm definitely a big fan of the PC platform.

I would say PC, but only right now as a Mac Steam player only, I like being super niche.:D As to what platform I have the fondest memories of... hmh that is indeed hard, I mean PC wins again just because of the long history with it, but I did love my Amiga 500 and Dreamcast back in the day but all the multiplayer fun I had on the Xbox 360 hasn't been beaten elsewhere. Ugh but then I remember all the good times on SNES/MEGADRIVE and things like having to have my PS1 upside down for it work when playing FF7, good times.

I just got an X for RDR2. I have to say I am very happy with it. I think this will become my 3rd party game platform. Usually its PC, but to get pretty good performance, in 4K, even when scaled. But with proper HDR with no hassles sounds awesome. At least something like AC or something like that is better here. PC is such a gamble lately. But yea... at least with RDR2 i have been super impressed with the IQ and performance.

I guess so... as a PC enthusiast and someone that spends the money to not think about performance settings, its just so much easier to use a console sometimes. Its too bad PC is not that reliable at times. But i guess i will continue to do my research to make sure i get the best version on games.

well, i mean - PC version is 99% of the time objectively the best version ... even Arkham Knight, broken as it was - was better than any of the console versions ... because it ran perfectly fine at 30fps ... and even then you could set graphics settings waaaaaaay beyond what any of the consoles could do ....

so yeah, it was an awful port ... but objectively the best version of the game ... and that was before they fixed it :p

X sounds like a pretty good option for 3rd party games, especially if they keep up with the backwards compatibility, although at this point I may as well wait for next gen to see what MS has to offer.

Also where's my Blue Dragon X enhancement :poop:

Grew up a Sega fanboy.

Being born in 1980, I mostly played games in the Arcades and Sega ruled the arcades. Altered Beast, Golden Axe, Virtua Fighter/Cop/Tennis/Striker, Daytona USA....the list goes on.

Naturally, when it came to getting a home console, Sega was the only choice. How the fuck else would I get those arcade games at home? So I went from Master System to MegaDrive to Saturn. But alongside me, my best friend was a Nintendo guy. So I did get exposure to Nintendo consoles all the while and honestly up until the N64, the NES and SNES did nothing to make me regret my choices.

But maaaaaaaaaaan. One night he had a sleep over with a bunch of guys and we played Goldeney multiplayer and Mario KArt 64 all night and it was like a transformative experience. From that day on I vowed to be a multiplatform gamer. So went and got a Nintendo 64 not long after. Sega was still ultimately my go to and favourite console brand, but I didn't want to miss out on anything so I bought it all.

After the Dreamcast though, I kinda naturally gravitated towards Xbox as it seemed like the spiritual successor to the Dreamcast. Ditto for the Xbox brand and Sega. Xbox valued online gaming, onboard storage (which even the Saturn had while the PS1 did not), they supported 4 players out of the box like Sega and Nintendo, which Sony did not. They also had all the quirky cool Sega games which again...Sony (and Nintendo) did not. I'm still a multiplatform gamer all the way, but to this day Microsoft hasn't given me a reason not to main their platform and Sony and Nintendo haven't given me a reason to be pulled away.

Voted all but Amiga (sorry Deacon). Currently I play mostly on my Xbox One X and Switch but I've been a fan of almost every platform and own about 35 different units from 7 or 8 different manufacturers currently. From 2600 to Xbox One X hitting Dreamcast/64/gamecube/Saturn/Ps1/Genesis/NES/SNES along the way.

I just never really had an amiga to play with.

It really depends on a few things tho. The quality of the port and the amount of effort you want to put into fixing things and tinkering with settings. You would think that most of the time settings would affect things in the same way so you know more or less what to keep the same. Most of the cases that is the case, but that is in good ports. Bad ports things are so weird. Anyways. I love PC. but the lack of native HDR in most games is becoming a turn off.

I think it is interesting how some people can have some similar exposures but different experiences. I was born 1981 and spent plenty of time in arcades but didn't become a Sega fan until 1996 or so. A little background:

My favorite arcade games in the day were Marble Madness, Rampage, and later the TMNT arcade game. As far as Sega stuff, somehow I had this perception that a lot of the stuff felt 'older' except for After Burner II, which I thought was really cool, and Rad Mobile. I remember watching some kid play Rad Mobile for probably an hour. I loved that there was a windshield wiper button, and I loved the Sonic mirror ornament. I thought that was amazing - it looked so good.

By that time I was a Nintendo fanboy. I got a NES when NES was the hot stuff in town. Every kid new about NES and loved the games. I also got an Atari Lynx, which most everyone thought was amazing, but obviously NES was very popular.

At some point I thought Mortal Kombat on Game Gear looked real good, so I wanted a Game Gear. I got a Genesis, too. I really enjoyed Sonic 2, and I rented Sonic 3 in the day, but I literally only owned Sonic 2 for Genesis for quite a while. Meanwhile I had about 20 SNES games.

When PlayStation came out, it wasn't long before I thought it was the hottest shit I had ever seen. By and large the games blew away anything I'd seen on PC at that point. I was a huge fan of Doom and PC gaming stuff and suddenly this console from a nobody comes up in the game space and just fucking owns everything. So I got the PlayStation. And I got hyped for N64 and got that too.

At this time there was a fair amount of hype in gaming mags regarding some of the Saturn games, too. I remember thinking Virtua Cop looked amazing, and I was interested in other stuff too. But at this point I still had never seen a Model 2 arcade game. I had seen Virtua Fighter and played Virtua Racer and I thought they were real cool, but for most intents and purposes Doom with its texture mapping and atmospheric levels was just cooler. Heck, I had played Cruisin USA a lot and thought it was the best looking racing game at the time.

So I even decided to rent a Saturn and Virtua Fighter 2. I thought it was alright. I decided to get a Saturn anyways, because even though my rental had ended, I just kept thinking about Virtua Fighter 2. I couldn't stop thinking about it now that I couldn't play it. I can't recall if I knew about the Christmas deal where you got VF2, Virtua Cop, and Daytona USA for $200 or something or not.

Then it happened. My family went to Atlantic City or some other east coast tourist place and the boardwalk there had the biggest arcade I'd ever been to. The place was packed. That's where I first saw Daytona USA (4 unit). They also had Virtual On. I remember that was the moment Cruisin USA got kicked to the shit can. This shit blew Cruisin USA out of the water. Daytona USA & Virtual On were THE games at that arcade. The units were mobbed. I was absolutely smitten, especially by Virtual On. This was my shit.

So that was it. I literally became a Sega fanboy at that moment. I got that Saturn pack, Virtual On, and Nights. Besides PC gaming a lot, especially in 1998, I was so into Sega's style from late 1996 through 2000. Sega's Model 3 stuff absolutely destroyed me. This was the future of video games delivered a almost a decade early. I literally got my first job so I could import a Dreamcast in early 1999. I owned more games for Dreamcast than I'd owned for any console previously by a huge margin. It was a lot of fun.

Anyways, it's a long story, but it is interesting how simply the games that show up in my local arcades shaped so much of my opinion.

Voted PC, simply because I like the option of purchasing keys from different digital distributors and enjoy customising games with downloaded mods.

Was originally a huge fan of the PlayStation, until the Sony started charging for PSN among other minor issues that I have with Sony..

Edit:

I'm not a huge fan of console gaming anymore, it's far too restrictive and controlled. You can only purchase your digital games/DLC from one store front. All three console makers now charge for multiplayer access. Worse of all is being unable to properly service your console without voiding a warrenty, which is pathetic IMO.

I voted PC and Nintendo, which isn't really true on either account.
It's more that I have a lot of love for PC as a gaming platform and myriad of unique things coming from the community and new devs.
Equally I like a lot of what Valve do to push the platform along.

Nintendo on the other hand, I hate with a passion for their policies - but I grew up with Nintendo consoles since I was 4 and had every single one up till WiiU, and now got the Switch... which I may sell - but through it all, I still love the work that goes into Nintendo games, and I often feel there is a personality and ingenuity in there that simply isn't found elsewhere

Ha. I started out on PC. My dad worked for IBM for 25 years and bought home lots of PC stuff and my first console NES. Being a designer I was forced to get to know the Apple ecosystem. My dad never brought home any bias so seeing adults being corporate fans has always been odd to me.

If you work in the industry you don’t know where your next job will come from so pretty important to have the ability to check out everything across all platforms including mobile.

The era when people used "I don't have to download patches on my console" as an argument against PC gaming. Those were some good days to own a console with all the exclusives. Now I don't need to since most of it eventually ends up on PC and I have a PC I use for both gaming and work.

Using my PC for work was a big part of moving back to console, If I'm in my "office" (2nd bedroom) for 10 hours a day at the computer desk working I just want to get away from it and play elsewhere.

Canada... eh?
This is the first time where my primary platform has come from the same provider in back to back generations... so I guess Sony.
I don't particularly like their consumer policies, and I think their first party offerings this generation have been pretty lackluster (despite sales being high), so I wouldn't actually say I'm a fan.
Plus, there's very little chance they're my primary platform next gen.
