Microsoft detailed some of the specs in a Xbox Wire post:

From a technical standpoint, this will manifest as world-class visuals in 4K at 60FPS, with possibility of up to 120FPS, including support for Variable Refresh Rate (VRR), and 8K capability. Powered by our custom-designed processor leveraging the latest Zen 2 and next generation RDNA architecture from our partners at AMD, Xbox Series X will deliver hardware accelerated ray tracing and a new level of performance never before seen in a console. Additionally, our patented Variable Rate Shading (VRS) technology will allow developers to get even more out of the Xbox Series X GPU and our next-generation SSD will virtually eliminate load times and bring players into their gaming worlds faster than ever before.

We are minimizing latency by leveraging technology such as Auto Low Latency Mode (ALLM) and giving developers new functionality like Dynamic Latency Input (DLI) to make Xbox Series X the most responsive console ever. Xbox Series X is also designed for a future in the cloud, with unique capabilities built into the hardware and software to make it as easy as possible to bring great games to both console and elsewhere. Xbox Series X will deliver a level of fidelity and immersion unlike anything that’s been achieved in previous console generations.

The new console will launch in Holiday 2020.

how is that supposed to fit in TV stands
It can be placed on its side. And comparing it to the pictured controller, it is probably around the height of three controllers. I assume that this fits for many people.
Alternatively there is the possibility to place it next to the TV stand...
I find it nice that this has not the standard console format :slightly-smiling-face:

I dig it, I don't really think I care about console designs in general, last one I liked was the Dreamcast, but I think the days where console looking "video gamey" are long gone and imo they all look boring now, so whatever gets the job done. Series X looks unique and alright.

That's a pretty smart-looking console. I'm not sure Xbox as a console is for me since I play on PC mostly, but it's definitely an interesting console design. I do fear a lot of people won't have space for it, however.

The 5700 XT is ~10tflops?
20% stronger than a 5700XT doesn't sound too bad from today's perspective.

Series X will, of course, be RDNA 2 and not 1 though and have some kind of hardware Ray Tracing support. Pure tflops are sometimes not comparable from generation to generation so we'll see.

Just 16 GB of shared RAM? I wouldn't be surprised if they go higher then that.

What's their "patented Variable Rate Shading (VRS) technology ", and how is it patented if Nvidia has been shipping GPUs with variable rate shading for over a year, and there are already several games out (and have been for a while) which use it?

I thought the 360 controller was perfection, especially after the first Xbox One controller with shoddy bumpers came out. But they have refined that design for a while now, to the point that it really is pretty much perfect for what it is. Always cautious when they go back and change things, but to MS's credit they don't like they've done much to it. Same old controller with a fancy new Share button.

Honestly, I wish they'd do more with it. Grip buttons at least.
i'm honestly only hoping for one thing with this new controller - NO built-in battery

otherwise - i'm getting one as soon as possible

Only thing that'd make the controller better imho would be paddles and gyro.

It's the best. Even dethroned my beloved Steam controller.

I can't believe I'm about to day one a console.

Thanks Phil

Console? Look at the damn thing, its a fucking PC. I don't wanna hear shit from xbot fanboys about pc gaming for the next 8 years.

Xbox One S is the best PC controller, ever.

Gotta say I’m real disappointed, actually. Only 16gb of RAM is such a low bump. I guess they’re counting on mandatory SSDs and the fact that the eighth gen RAM boost was huge to cover up for it, but 16gb is barely more than the 1X and will really limit a lot of games, especially now that 4K support will be mandatory.

And it’s 2019 and still no gyro in the controller!? Come on! Literally every one of your competitors is doing it now!

I also don’t really know what this thing is supposed to be. Recent interviews suggest they’re moving to the name just being “Xbox” and releasing several models - so we may see like a Series B or a Series O alongside it. But is this supposed to be the weaker or stronger model? Or is it the only one? What is going on? You already have something called Xbox One X and I’m getting real Wii U vibes from all of this.

The RAM progression is pretty interesting to observe.
If you look at just Xbox consoles, you have
64 MB -> 512 MB -> 8 GB -> 16 GB
which is
x 8 -> x 16 -> x 2

FWIW, I don't find that particularly surprising. In fact you can probably find posts by my on the internet from 2 years ago predicting a small HW bump in general, and a particularly small RAM capacity bump for this gen. RAM actually got somewhat cheaper again since then, but I guess they figured 16 GB is enough.

Of course, the actual game-usable chunk will probably increase by more than a factor of 2 (I can't imagine that they reserve 6 GB), but it's still an incredibly tiny step compared to every previous transition.

I thought i'd seen a Powerpoint slide saying that of the 16GB, 3GB was reserved leaving 13GB for Game Devs to use.
Is that enough to unlock all the TFlops and obliterate PC Gaming forever? Imagine how tight the graphics on Level 3 are going to be now!

Seriously though, if true console Dev's will be swimming in free RAM compared to current consoles.

It would be quite funny if Series X gets released before the PS5, just because Sony were arrogant jackasses.

Impressive specs to be sure. I'm very happy that the baseline for next-gen games is going way up. Bigger, prettier games.

I hope Nvidia are watching this, they need to bring some serious guns in 2020 to outshine Microsoft's new console. Ampere (or whatever it ends up being called) has to be a significant leap over Turing in featureset and performance.
Ray tracing in particular needs to be drastically (60%+) faster than Turing.

Agreed! I know that I have a fair bit of resentment toward nvidia for the glacial pace of their improvements, not to mention the price gouging from the crypto boom. Sounds like a wake-up call, although one that they probably know of long before today.

Why? I’ve seen a few people say they are going to buy an XSX instead of or in addition to their PC but for the most part they are separate markets. I do think Ampere will be a significant improvement, but they will charge you out the ass for it.

The PC platform does not exist in a vacuum. Hence why Nvidia needs to keep a very close eye on next-gen consoles.
It's not about people jumping from PC to consoles.

Well, nvidia has been taking the piss since the 970, and arguably been a really bad deal in terms of price/performance for the past 10 years at least. They went from low/mid/high-range to pushing the mid-range into high-range price, and introducing ridiculous cards like the Titans and Super. The fact the consoles are so comparatively powerful is a direct result of this stagnation in my opinion.

It's funny how what is probably going to be MS's crowning achievement in the console space is probably the first console of theirs I don't buy because they've doubled down on their PC support. But I guess that's to their credit, and I hope it does well for them regardless.

I suppose my One S will feel a little old once I get a 4K TV and want to play some BC games in beautiful 4K goodness. Will consider grabbing one then, price permitting.

MS also removed the option to pay for a year of XBL Gold. Perhaps all their subscriptions will be merging into one and will include xCloud?

It's interesting that the "affordable" Series S has no disc drive. This means Microsoft has an iOS-like "monopoly" on game distribution for this console, earning 30% for EVERY game. I wonder how Sweeney feels about this, and even more how this affects game prices.

Digital vs physical generally leans towards digital being more lucrative for both the dev/pub and platform holder as there's no retail or distribution to take a cut.

In that space, getting 70% of your game's revenue is actually an amazing deal. As it was when Steam first rolled in and demolished retail distribution. It's only because of grifters like Sweeney that the waters have been muddied around 30%.
