Full Changelog by Durante - 1/17 Update
A major update is now available for Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA!

New improvements have been made to graphics, performance/stability, and input/UI. In addition, an experimental local co-op feature has been added to the game.

Check out all the exciting quality-of-life changes that are included in the available game update patch:

Full Changelog

GRAPHICS/PERFORMANCE
  • Arbitrary main rendering resolution enabled
  • Improved frame-pacing and animation sync accuracy at all framerates
  • Improved menu opening/closing behavior
  • Character and enemy animations now correctly timed at 100+ FPS
  • Support for high-refresh monitors and >60 Hz V-sync
  • Replaced ineffective anti-aliasing blur filter with high-quality screenspace AA
  • Bloom, refraction, and glare post-processing effects now scale with resolution
  • Minimap rendering resolution now adapts to rendering resolution, preventing pixelated map at high resolution
  • Greatly improved quality of menu backgrounds (replacing low-res screen capture)
  • Improved standard shadow filtering without performance loss, plus two new, higher quality filter options
  • Added option for rendering additional environment shadows
  • Added supersampling/subsampling option (which also affects secondary 3D rendering)
  • Improved shadow rendering performance by preventing unnecessary memory traffic
  • Fixed animation speed of HUD elements at >30 FPS (e.g. full health bar)
  • Improved the quality of volumetric lighting
  • Implemented HBAO+ ambient occlusion as alternative higher-quality SSAO option
  • Added a draw distance setting which applies to grass/clutter, monsters and NPCs
  • Implemented anisotropic filtering setting
  • Added high-quality texture pack (generated from original sources, partially with AI upsampling, and full mipmaps)
  • Character poses in the equip menu now update at >30 FPS

INPUT/UI
  • Improved camera mouse controls, replacing joystick emulation with direct 1:1 control
  • Movement keys are now individually bindable
  • Added keybinding for walking (slow movement) with keyboard/mouse controls
  • Changed default bindings to fit common usage by PC gamers

STABILITY
  • Fixed multiple video memory leaks
  • Fixed potential crash when switching between languages
  • Switched to 64-bit build to prevent address space fragmentation issues in long sessions
  • Improved render thread synchronization to prevent specific types of race condition crashes
  • Removed superfluous asset encryption
MISCELLANEOUS
  • Fixed unlocking of some achievements when playing with mouse/keyboard controls
  • Fixed several typos and dialogue/text issues throughout the game
  • Fixed slightly-too-low cloud save limit when using a very large number of saves

CO-OP MODE (Experimental)
  • 2-Player local co-op mode has been added
About coop mode:

  • Need to supply two Xinput controllers
  • You must have 2 or more characters in the party in order for the second player to join the game.
  • SP is shared
  • Second player does not receive the “AI cheats” (ie. AI controlled characters only take half damage, whereas second player in co-op mode will take the full amount of damage.)
  • Not officially supported and limited support will be available for troubleshooting
To enable co-op mode:
  • Open Steam libraries through the Steam client
  • Right-click on Ys VIII: Lacrimosa of DANA, and click “Properties”
  • Click “Set Launch Options”
  • Input “--coop” into the parameter and click “OK.”
  • Launch the game
  • Press “Start” on the second controller to enable second player

Start with Nightmare difficulty for the funnest experience. You can always drop the difficulty if it should get too hard, but Normal is a joke and Hard is hardly better.

Flash Dodge and Flash Guard (perfect dodge/guard) are your best friends.
Flash Dodge makes you invulnarable and slows time down for enemies but not you for a few seconds, Flash Guard makes every attack crit for a few seconds. You can chain a Flash Dodge into a Flash Guard for maximum pro-ness.

Have fun!

I just can't believe that the day finally happened where the mistakes done with the Ys VIII PC port have been rectified thanks to Durante, the hard working folks in PH3 Studios, and NISA for contracting them and making sure the fans get a game that everyone can be proud of. Just an insane amount of work in this update.

Is the resolution scaling broken? I set it at 4k and it doesn't really look like it's rendering at that res.

Will keep that in mind!

Also how much VRAM high-quality texture eats for breakfast? RTX 2080ti does not required? :steam_pig_scowling:

So, did anyone expect Ys VIII local coop? ;)

It really shouldn't need more than 6 GB VRAM, even at high resolutions (unless you go crazy with the supersampling).

Is the resolution scaling broken? I set it at 4k and it doesn't really look like it's rendering at that res.
Did you restart the game? The internal resolution settings only apply after a restart.

That's a lot (i only have 3.5gb), playing at 1080p usually.
You can give it a try, I can't say it won't work,

That said, the texture pack is actually not a big deal, especially at that resolution. It's very subtle and only noticeable at really high res.

Most of the other graphical improvements are much more meaningful than the texture pack.

Supersampling "normal" just means "native resolution rendering".
("low" is * 0.5, and the other two options are * 1.5 and * 2 respectively. That's in both dimensions each time, so the highest settings is 4 times as many pixels rendered)

That a bit stupid I know but the game's menu system doesn't leave that much room for explanations.

Looks like someone found the direct cause of the crashing issue with Ys VIII in the troubeshooting forum. To keep it short it looks like if your F drive specifically is assigned to a random drive say DVD, USB, CD (in my case BD), the game will crash as it tries to dump files? (someone noticed a "F:\\tmp\\y8texdump" string in the debugger) to this drive. Simply assigning the F drive to a real drive or removing the F drive entirely will fix the issue.

If anyone else is running into the crash issue, give this a try and see if it fixes it for you. Just a matter of going into the disk management tab and reassigning the value of the F drive to another letter.

I've tried it for a bit and with 1440p + High Supersamling I hover between 70-90 fps and it's awesome.
With 144p and Normal Supersampling (so none) I get 120-144.
It's awesome.

One thing though, do you have any idea why the game does not pick up my Steam Controller at all Durante ?

Played this a little tonight and man, the controls feel great on mouse and keyboard. The camera seems pretty important here so I am glad I can skip dealing with controller camera control.

Yeah, there might still be a few areas in fog which aren't great with HBAO+. It's always difficult to combine when you do it in postprocessing for a forward-rendered game. In most situations it should choose a good tradeoff based on the level and type of fog but some borderline cases like the above can happen.

One thing though, do you have any idea why the game does not pick up my Steam Controller at all Durante ?
That's strange. I didn't work on the controller input at all, but it worked for me during testing.
Do you have a Direct Input controller connected to your PC? You might want to try enabling Steam API controller handling for all types of controllers.

Yes, I have a DS3 connected. I'll give it a try. If it worked for you I can at least be sure it's something on my end :)

Durante Asked before if you have any info regarding if it would be possible to release the Vita DLCs for PC? I know that you aren't in charge of deciding things like that, but it would be cool if it could happen, to solidify the PC port as the best version. Dunno if you missed my post before in the Steam thread or not, but feel free to ignore this message if it is stuff you can't talk about.

Either way, thanks for fixing the game up, works wonders!

Encountered a pretty strange bug in a late game boss fight in Ys VIII, that I recorded a video of below.

Looks like it might have something to do with Dana's
light form attacking really fast in conjunction with the higher frame rate (it was running around 90-100), messing with the hitboxes? I noticed it happened a few times before, but nothing this wild where u just skip a whole phase lol and it was easy to recreate.

I don't think it's a big deal, but I thought it'd be something worth flagging.

I booted the game to try that, and yeah. I tried it via time attack mode 3 times, and couldn't do it at 60 fps, but once i unlocked the fps i killed him even faster than in your video at 200fps, the hp dropped real fast, he went from 60% in the yellow bar to dead ( also it seems the game is capped at 200fps, can't go higher! )
