Just announced via Kotaku;

"“We have enjoyed a successful eight-year run and would like to thank Activision for their partnership on Destiny,” Bungie said in a blog post today. “Looking ahead, we’re excited to announce plans for Activision to transfer publishing rights for Destiny to Bungie. With our remarkable Destiny community, we are ready to publish on our own, while Activision will increase their focus on owned IP projects.”

TLDR: Bungie is going back to being an independent studio and will retain the Destiny franchise while Activision release mobile games that no one has asked for.

Hopefully they have a good plan for the future. Personally I hope they're able to take Destiny the Warframe route and establish a world upon which they can then build in perpetuity instead of releasing new games. I've seen it mentioned that they're working on new ip as well so perhaps that will show up first as their engine for Destiny supposedly still isn't great for making stuff fast despite all the changes they made to it after Destiny 1 came out.

Turning Destiny into a gaas would certainly benefit the franchise, but I fear it may be too late to explore that route especially when they have already released two full games and a load of expansions

I think this news explains all the "belt tightening" at Blizzard and likely the other ATVI studios. Without Destiny they are back to only having CoD and whatever Blizzard puts out.

Even if Blizzard or Bungie are or get separated from their parent company it won't matter. People need to realize that the Blizzard of old is dead and long gone. The Bungie of Halo 1 is gone and has been for some time now. Things change, sometimes for worse and sometimes for the better, in most cases when it comes to the gaming industry it has been for the worse IMO; just refer to any company bought up by EA as an example.

I am curious as to what the fanbase will say when things they do not like still keep happening in Destiny. Activision will not be there to shoulder the bad guy blame anymore.

I state this as a hardcore Destiny/Destiny 2 addict.

It is an interesting turn of events to say the least and I am curious what the roadmap will be going forward.

Which, for the time being continues to act as a money printing licence for Activision.

Indeed. But for how long? The investors gotta be nervous about having all the eggs in one basket (CoD) and Blizzard hasn't really hit a home run since Overwatch several year ago. Gotta be nervous times over there in Bobby's office.

I wonder if they go and try to acquire more studios or something...

No one knows how much longer the gravy train that is Call of Duty will last. It sort of evolves to current market trends to stay relevant, multiplayer, zombies, campaigns, battle royale etc. So long as people continue to buy a copy each year, along with the $50 season pass, then Activision will continue to shit them out.
