This is a great point actually. What a scummy move.
I still do hope the retail has steam key, because I want that steelbook...but only if it comes with steam key. I refuse to support Epic's disgusting practices.

Sadly, retail copies activate on the EGS, not Steam.
Places like CDKeys already updated their listings, and Rock Paper Shotgun posted an update confirming it as well:

I just sent email to my local retailer asking to confirm.
If that is the case, then Epic can fuck off always and forever and I will be cancelling the shit out of that preorder. Too bad I miss out on steelbook and artbook, but I will not be jerked around by these morons.
This mess will keep sending the wrong message to the devs and costumers are not helping with their flocking to preorder on steam.

I put journalist in quotations for a reason. Anyone who even marginally follows competitive Overwatch knows that the guy has been a hack for at least the past two years.
The fact that Kotaku gives him space to publish his vapidity (alongside actual writers like Schreier) is a considerable blemish against them.
The fact of the matter is that most gaming publications should stop writing about the PC gaming landscape, because they clearly don't actually care about it, and their hot-takes are garbo.
I'm beyond sick of Epic and their anti competitive actions (which extend to areas outside of PC gaming. See what they do to try and hurt Unity all of the time for examples). But a bribe takes two willing participants to pull off and Deep Silver deserves as much shit as Epic for doing this to consumers TWO WEEKS before the game is out.
I was going to buy the game so they forced me to buy it on steam today but I honestly feel gross even doing that. I feel bad for 4A if the rumors are true about them being blindsided by this but I wish nothing but the worst to Deep Silver. I hope THQ Nordic's CEO tightens the leash on them after this stunt.

I'd like to think it won't because that's from THQ Nordic proper and not the dipshits at deep silver (I think at least) but who knows at this point. It feels like anything is a prime target and even 2 weeks from release isn't a safe enough window from these poachers. If there's a single aspect to Epic invading PC gaming that I hate more than anything it's the anxiety they've created. Everyone has to worry that a game they are looking forward to is next to be bought out. It's making PC gaming a lot less fun and more stressful.
I'm so angry and disappointed about this. Metro Exodus was on top of my wistlist. But I will not support any companies involved in this kind of anti-consumer shit. So no buy for me.

4a was aware, and a willing participant.
Not only are they publicizing the launch on the Epic Games Store, but I should point out that Deep Silver isn't the publisher in Russian territories, Buka is, and the game will be an EGS exclusive over there also.
As for THQ Nordic, they fully own Deep Silver. So, no matter how they put it, this decision comes from THQ Nordic as well.
And I say this as someone who keeps buying their games on day one, because up until today, I considered them to be an exception in regards to treating their customers well.

I kinda doubt Deep Silver could do this when they are owned by Nordic...I think Nordic had to have signed off on this, sadly.
It's their loss. Now I'll just wait for it to go on sale in the future.

This kind of thing makes me sad. Valve does things generally good for gamers, like Steam Play/Linux support, and Steam controller customizations that makes non-Steam games second-class citizens in many ways. Plus now we all have to deal with yet another DRM system (Steam, for all its flaws, is pretty much a known quantity at this point).
I like Valve/Steam because they have shown that generally they are not evil. I'm not sure we can say the same for the others (though to be fair customer service has always been a weak spot).

I cancelled my pre-order. I do not support devs/pubs who do stuff like this. When it comes to Steam i will buy it only at 75% off. Twelve fucking months exclusivity!!!! The game is OLD then.

Yeah, my colleagues are talking about pirating the game as well, even while they haven't been pirating games over 10 years. They are reasoning that Epic already paid the publisher anyway. It boggles my mind how anyone could think this was a good move and actually was "competition". I never really let people get to me online but just wow.

Hmm tis and odd choice but I'm guessing ther ewas some very lucrative money being handed upfront which would easily help swing the choice to focus on Epic 1 year exclusivity which isn't tooo bad for an exclusive deal.
But odd for the PC market and even more odd considering they have been pre-selling on Steam for a while and will now need to maintain two builds of the game.

They've got the money do so and smart for Epic as Fortnite incoming slowly falls over the next decade they are hoping the investment in the store is the safety net for them so they won't be reliant on game development and engine support which hasn't been too hot for them recently. Bar Fortnite blowing up of course.
Being a year later is probably when I would get around to buying it to be honest. Got so much to play and I'm not as much of a day one person as I used to be for games. The desire to be 'right there right now' for games just isn't there anymore (unless it's a Yakuza/Team Yakuza game)
Aside from the utter ridiculousness of the claim, just adding to this bizarre recent trend of gaming press being so needlessly antagonizing toward their user base, I can't help but wonder what's up with vibe I'm getting, of journalists over-enthusiastically trying to hype up the Epic Games Store and downplaying all its shortcoming, while at the same time relentlessly chastising Valve for "faults" that are broadly applicable at the entire industry.
Even RPS' John Walker, who wrote an article allegedly criticizing Epic for their current strategy with exclusives, before getting to the point had to preface the entire thing with two or three paragraphs of throwing crap at Steam.
I doubt I'm the only one who's getting this impression, but I won't deny I have a hard time justifying where it could come from, if in good faith.
