MetaCouncil is, as you all know, a PC-centric forum where PC gaming is the focus.

However, since some of us have either one or more consoles, I assume some of us use them occiasionally either to play exclusives or console-only games. In order to have less console gaming talk in the MetaSteam thread I decided to make this thread.

This thread is where you can discuss or posts your thoughts about any of the consoles and their games.

To start off:

I personally have a PS4 Pro, Switch and Xbox One X. I only use them for exclusives and console-only games and since MS games are all in on PC/Steam, I won't buy an Series X, but I will buy a PS5 at some point as I really enjoy Sony exclusives, unless they release them on PC of course.

I actually don't really know why I bought an Xbox X, I guess it was mainly to play some of my X360 games because my current X360 is dead (yay for console gaming :p ) and some games that are still not on PC like Rare Replay.

I am currently playing TLOU 2 and find the game amazing.

Also playing TLOU 2, not really far enough yet to say how good it is but I'm enjoying the graphics and the new control improvements so far.

I'm quite excited by the PS5 even though it seems like everything except spiderman is 2021. I plan on getting my first 4k/HDR TV later this year (an oled too) so my plans for the PS5 launch are mostly to replay the big PS4 exclusives so I can experience them in 4k/HDR and then move on to spiderman miles and whatever else is coming around that time.

I'll eventually get an xbox as well but there's no real excitement for that since most everything on it will be on PC. I can only see myself using it for games that EGS steals or maybe first party games that aren't interesting enough to buy on steam (because fuck the w10 store).

There's very little chance that Im getting PS5 on release unless Bloodborne 2 is out on release.

I will get it at some point when it's on sale and there are more games Im interested in. Demon's Souls Remake, Ratchet and Horizon looks nice, but none of them are launch titles afaik and who knows, maybe Sony will announce some PC support by that time.

Nice work fantomena .

PS4/Xbox One X / Switch here. PS4 is my Apex Legends machine now, Xbox for the odd Gamepass megaton, and I use my Switch quite often.

I’m a handheld type of person so I’ve got a Switch that I’m playing Xenoblade DE on at the moment. Pretty fun in a mindless kind of way. Not enjoying it as much as I used to, but it’s ok.

Also have a 3DS, DS PSP and Vita that I pull out from time to time. Still need to wrap up AA Trilogy and a slew of other games. Have a few older Nintendo consoles as well bit those are in storage.

Animal Crossing is great and also the quest in Xenoblade sure are something... I don't think I will ever finish that game.

Im still playing my 3DS, it got a big library of untouched games on it. PS Vita is still alive due to Muramasa Rebirth, Disgaea 3, 4, FF Tactics and Oreshika, but due to P4G not being Vita exclusive anymore Im not really afraid if the Vita dies or not. I mean, the games I mentioned are cool and all, but they are not "important".

Xbox for the odd Gamepass megaton, and I use my Switch quite often.
I mainly use game pass a s a demo service if it's also on buyable on PC or to play console-only games (like I played Kingdoms Hearts 3 via game pass, will soon do KH 2.8 which recently dropped ther).

Animal Crossing is great and also the quest in Xenoblade sure are something... I don't think I will ever finish that game.
I haven't played AC in a long time, don't know why really, only thing I guess is due to some games on PC that caught my attention so I just forgot about the game.

Played the first 4 hours of The Last of Us II.

Decided to play it on Easy, as I didn't like the gameplay in the first game. I see some improvements from the first, though.
Story so far is interesting and I want to know more about this new enemy (I've not being spoiled on anything so far); I'm liking Dina and I hope we'll see more of Jesse, he seems cool as well.

I wish I could play this on PC, Photo Mode is so limited here :face-with-stuck-out-tongue-and-tightly-closed-eyes:

Only played 3-4 hours of TLoU 2 (Persona 4 has its hooks in me deep, again), not feeling the game. But I'll give it a few more hours, the first game I only came to like in the last few sections.

Finished TLOU2, not a huge fan, it was just okay.
It had big boots to fill and sadly didn't live up to expectations. I rated it 7 on my "Games I've beaten this year" list, mostly thanks to the visual presentation and improved gameplay, it's a nice experience on OLED TV especially, lot of dark scenes, but ultimately doesn't live up to the first game with how bad the writing is.

I'm playing The Last of Us Part II aswell, like many of you.

It hasn't sunk its hooks into me yet after an hour, but I'm not put off by it. I just find it incredibly self-indulgent in the way sequels to critically acclaimed AAA games can be.

As far as consoles go, I have the trio: PS4 Pro, Xbox Series S and Switch.

I will be selling the PS4 once I'm done with TLoU 2. I probably won't bother with PS5 for a good few years as I want a PC upgrade.

The Xbox Series S is already redundant as I have a good gaming PC, but I'll be keeping it around as a DVD/Blu-ray player and my Lost Odyssey box. Since I'm subbed to Game Pass, I may grab a Series X to replace my One S and play some of the Xbox-only releases there, get improvements to my BC library and have a disc-based player. But as with PS5, I want a new PC first.

The Switch stays, as I love Nintendo first party. And hey, I'm excited for Deadly Premonition 2 and the new Paper Mario games!

I've recently looked at a lot of games of the early to mid-00s to find some rare gems that I might have missed and I've come to the conclusion that, if I hadn't been so broke that cobbled-together PCs were the only thing I could afford, I would totally have become a Gamecube and Wii guy.

Before downloadable indie games just became an unstoppable avalanche, it seems Nintendo was the place to be if you wanted cute or charming or just well-designed games that weren't necessarily "hardcore".

I have a feeling Im gonna both hate and love the story in TLOU 2. Hate because it's not the story I wanted
I want more Joel and Ellie adventures
, but love it because it feels different, risky and showing a really bad side of humanity.

Im on day 2.

Also

It somewhat hurts, both that he is dead, but also the way he went, yet still, his death simply shows humanity at it's worst, he didn't go out with guns blazing or something like that, but I wish he died by old age, yet still, the world in last of us is terrible so...

I hate The Last of Us Part II. I really, really dislike it.

I don't know where to start, but the writing is meh. It's very self-indulgent in the Rockstar style, which I hate with a passion. I was willing to put up with it for the sake of good gameplay, but then they introduced the open world bits and... yeah. I'm done. I hated that sort of gameplay in Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, and they've really doubled down on it in this game.

So I'm out. It was the last game for me on PS4, and I don't think that system could've had a more appropriate game to sum up how I feel about Sony's first party over the last decade. I don't want to say they make bad games, but I think I have to accept they don't make games I like anymore.

I took me a bit over 12 hours to get to Ellie day 3. Game is long and I love the gameplay. I honestly don't care that much about the story (didn't really care much for the story in TLOU either, found it fairly generic), so I guess that's maybe why Im only feel a bit of dissapointment. Simply wanted more Ellie and Joel adventures.

Noneless, I really enjoy the gameplay and environment.

I could've put up with the story if the gameplay and environment were good, but they've basically done the Sony Thing and made a semi-open space, filled it with garbage to do that wastes time while being very vague about what you actually have to do to progress. I don't mind open games with lots of side-content, but when you have to hop on your horse and roam a wide open space in a wild goose chase to find the marker on the map that actually progresses the story, then I'm out. I don't have the energy to waste on that. A compelling story can make that sort of gameplay sufferable, just as good gameplay can make a bad story sufferable. The Last of Us Part II gives me neither.

Though I obviously don't begrudge anyone else liking the game. Obviously a lot of people do. On another forum (not Era), I posted my dislike for the game and the resident system warrior jumped down my throat, as if I'd blasphemed scripture or something. Some people just can't handle others not liking what they like.

I don't have a problem when people say the story is a dissapointment (which it is for me too) or that it sucks, I have a problem with the full-on rage and hatred towards the story and Neil.

I also can see that the gameplay is not for everyone, I still however really like it.

To me, the story is not a dissapointment in the way in how it's told or shown or anything like that, it's a dissapointment in the way that it's not what I wanted. Despite that I didn't care much for the story in the first game I still wanted more Ellie and Joel adventures.

Oh yeah, don't get me wrong, the hate boners towards Druckmann have ulterior motives behind them. There's a lot of "SJW shit" posts going around and, well, if that's your argument against the game then not only are you a shit person, you also have poor taste. There's plenty of other things to ding the game for other than its diversity, which isn't a flaw at all.

My problem is that it's lost the feel of the original. The Last of Us was a journey. It had a lot of brutality, but it also had some good character building moments, and the game felt like it spanned a whole year. The Last of Us Part II, of what I played, was just misery compounded upon misery propagated by large and inexplicable timejumps. Apparently there are plotholes in terms of characters appearing, disappearing, and teleporting around in record breaking time. The new characters weren't particularly interesting. And the gameplay of the original game, stretched out over 20-30 hours and plopped into semi-open spaces, is really unflattering.

I think deep down, however, my feelings on The Last of Us is that it should've been a one-hit wonder. There are some things that just don't need a sequel. Or, make a sequel but do it about new characters going on their own journey. I felt Ellie and Joel's story finished at the end of the first game. Where possibly can you go after that?

I thought the game never needed a sequel so I was kinda letdown when they announced Part 2. To me, Part 2 feels a bit like a story that "doesn't exist" or something like that, like a nightmare Ellie has and the story still ended in the first game.

I'm around 7-8 hours into The Last of Us II.

Things I'm liking: the characters, both Ellie and Dina are very likeable so far.

Things I'm meh about: gameplay and graphics. The combat isn't really engaging, but at least the knife doesn't break this time, so props for that. I'm playing on a 1080p projector and the missing effects / ugly textures are pretty obvious (I might have been playing on PC for too long).

Things I'm not particularly liking: the semi-open areas, I don't see the point in them done like that. Of course I'll explore everything because that's simply how I play these games, but most areas are empty... it's just super disappointing. I wish there were little secrets around, to give the exploration a bit of reward, but nada, some notes and collectibles here and there, but nothing really interesting.

When I see semi-open areas I'm always hoping for some kind of immersive sims feeling, so the problem might totally be with my expectations.

But all in all, I want to play more and see where this is going.

PS4 and PS3 owner reporting in.

My PS3 is basically a fuck around with console at this point, got a lot of games but PS4 and PC take up the bulk of my time. I still have a number of 'big' releases on the PS3 unfinished, so I could spend more time working through those games if I was so inclined. My PS3 setup is a bit unique, I've got it hooked up to a 21 crt monitor via HDMI to VGA adapter. 720p looks hella crisp.

PS4 is were a lot of my AAA titles lived, although that's going to change a bit going forward. Still have Uncharted LL, God of War, Hitman, Detroit and a ton of others to start/finish. TLOU2 is a big ask at $60, especially when misery and stress are waiting for me whenever I do make the jump. My setup is 1080p monitor for the PS4, works great.

I've a relatively simple question. What Switch games would you recommend i have a look at getting for a 6 yr old lad?
My Sister has asked if there's anything decent on Switch and tbh i haven't really kept up with Nintendo much this year. It's mainly been PC Backlog time. I have no idea what he'd like and my sister is no bloody use at all. Oh, he's getting a fish tank for his birthday so is there anything "fishy" about? Aside from that gimme options, thanks.

As somebody who does not own a Switch:
May be Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, Luigi’s Mansion 3 or Super Mario Party?
These games can all be played with at least two players which is probably good for a kid (=> play the game together with the parents).
If I remember correctly Mario Kart 8 Deluxe has a support mode for inexperienced players.

I wouldn't go for Luigi's Mansion unless they're used to playing games. It's a good game but controls can take a while to get used to. Also there was a thread on another forum about (adult) people having difficulty with some of the puzzles

Mario Kart 8 is a must have, great for single player/multiplayer beginners and experienced. Mario Party can be fun and easy to pick up but only if you have multiple people to play with. Super Mario Odyssey is a great game but single player only.

One of my nieces is 7 and got a Switch a couple of months ago. Playing a lot of Minecraft and Animal Crossing. I've a 9 year old nephew that's obsessed with making levels in Mario Maker 2 so if you think he'll like making levels I'd recommend that.

Anybody have a nice Sega Saturn wallpaper akin to this style? It seems every console under the sun has been made into this "japanese super famicom box art" style except the dang Sega Saturn. At least not in a nice wallpaper suitable format, I did find that second picture which is probably modeled after it but yeah.
I currently use the Dreamcast one but want a Saturn wallpaper...

Is it possible to take uncompressed screenshots with the PS4? If so, how? I just noticed that my last shots have been terribly compressed, but I don't think I've changed any settings since I've started playing TLoU2... :confused-face:

Now, even the first shots weren't great compared to the shots on PC, but at least they weren't this compressed.

Can't look right now, but there should be an option to change the screenshot format to PNG.

Finished TLOU 2, took me about 25 hours. Really liked it. 8/10 from me.

I was afraid that I would end up disliking or hating playing as Abby, but it's the opposite, I really liked playing as her and I feel I liked her part (second half of the game) better than the first hafl with Ellie despite liking Ellie. So during the last fight when Ellie threatened to cut Lev's throat I got really mad at Ellie and during the fight I just wanted both to stop killing each other, didn't want Ellie to hurt Abby or Abby to hurt Ellie.

In conclusion, both Ellie and Abby are shitty human beings, but I understand each of their motivations for why they did what they did. So I guess Neil Druckmann succeeded in that.

I must say that I like the gameplay in TLOU 2 so far. Level design is a bit too linear, though. Yes, you can explore a bit, but it is a straightforward game.
For the story, I must play through it first.

Was watching some footage of Ridge Racer being played on YT earlier, and I was surprised to see how few people made proper use of the drift system. Like, people are actually trying take corners like it's a normal racing game when every corner should, in my opinion, be approached as an opportunity for ridiculous drifts. In the later entries at least, this is how you're always boosting whenever you're not in a drift. Weird :grimacing-face:

Playing TLOU 2, at about 15 hours in, broad impressions are:
  • much like the first one, it's a good game but dear lord almighty the hype for this is well bloody overblown
  • at about 15 hours now, I'm ready for this to be wrapped up. I hear the game is about 20 hours long? The combat while tense and gratifying isn't enough on its own imo to keep a game of this length, and the story isn't as good as the first one
  • on the story, I've managed to keep away from spoilers and the leaks so I have no idea what people are so mad about, all I can say from my perspective is
while a neat twist to pull a MGS2, having the back half of the game be flashbacks for a character I don't care about on what is basically a side story really kills the momentum. I'm sure the story is going for a "we are all monsters, and we all think we're the hero" theme but I really can't say I'm sympathetic for Abby at all given the empathy we've built with Joel and Ellie after all this time.

22-30 hours depending on how much you do, I believe.

I never bothered to finish it myself so I can't say for sure, but the game should've ended 10-15 hours in for sure. A bit of editing to tighten it up would've made it much more enjoyable.

Oh, I did not notice that he was replying to a deleted tweet. I looked into the whole situation afterwards and do think that there are many pathetic things said by bigots. However, I also don't think Neil is not at fault here as well. Even taken out of context, saying that people should not be invested into fictional characters is not something deemed as reasonable and sympathetic.

Place holder?
But seventy-five € for GTA 5.

And people are complaining about HZD for fifty € on PC.

But on a serious note. Games are already seventy € for me on PS4, I fully expect eighty € for PS5.

Ok, I beat TLOU2

What are people so damn mad about exactly??

Anyway my broad impressions from earlier are still largely the same:
Good game but jesus christ the hype on this is too much
Good story but not as good as the first
Combat is intense and gratifyingly visceral, but it's too much over the course of 20 hours

my feelings on Abby are the same, I can't say I gave a damn about her when the strings of "make the player feel sorry for her" are just so obvious
