Community MetaCouncil's PC Games of the Year Awards 2020

Only played very few games ( ) and because of that my selection of 2020 games is limited.

Do not worry about that.

I have noticed some of you are afraid to cast their ballot, because they have not played enough. Well, it does not matter. As long as what you have played is eligible, I want to hear about it. Do not be ashamed, contribute what you can, and I will try to make use of your data as best as I can.

Gotta say though, with this being obviously a very pc focused community, if it were about tie breaking amongst a few big games, it would almost be a little bit boring. I'm more interested in the surprise picks from other enthusiasts. And anyway it has been a rather odd year so hopefully the results will reflect that. I didn't play much from this year either, and I also thought I probably wouldn't vote because of it, but I'm glad I bothered to sort it out because it ended up being an interesting look back for me.

I will post the full results as usual, and some people (including myself) will dig through the ranking and look closely at ranks outside of the top 10.
The more votes, the more chance to break ties in this part of the ranking as well.

GOTY: Yakuza like a dragon. Out of the new releases of 2020 it's the one that I ended up playing the most.


VR : Half Life Alyx, it's pretty well made and shows that VR games can just as much games as any other one can.

Ongoing: 1. CSGO it's the game that I played the most

(I can't remember if you can do more than 1 per category and if you can here is my second choice).

2. Apex, I have been playing this a lot and it's pretty fun. I just wish that my account stuff transfered between platforms.

Deciding my choices made me realize that I have played too few of the eligible PC games this year. I am especially disappointed that I did not make time for Cyberpunk 2077 (only played 2 hours), Desperados III (1 hour) and Yakuza: Like a Dragon (0 hours). Making things worse, I wasted a lot of time playing some seducingly good console games like Final Fantasy VII Remake, Xenoblade Chronicles: Definitive Edition and Ghost of Tsushima, while neglecting my dear old PC. Anyway, here are my choices:

GOTY 2020 Award:
5. Mafia: Definitive Edition
4. Alwa's Legacy
3. Supraland Crash
2. Ori and the Will of the Wisps
1. Half-Life: Alyx - The clear winner in a relatively weak year for PC games. Groundbreaking presentation of setting and story, fantastic visuals, novel gameplay concepts, novel input method, and somehow still a well-balanced and fun game despite breaking new ground in so many areas.

Early Access of the Year:
NA
VR Game of the Year:
Half-Life: Alyx
Turd of the Year:
Genshin Impact - The least entertainment value per euro spent in 2020 ...

Objectively HLA would be one of my top 5, but I didn't put it there since it's already my VR game of the year and I wanted to use those slots for other games.

I thought I might not be able to fill the list with good choices this year, but then I looked back through everything I played (well, on Steam) and there was more I wanted to include than I thought. I didn't have a single standout in 2020 that was clearly #1 though, while usually I do.

Also, prediction: my GotY this year will be Silksong, and I might have an "Ongoing Game of the Year" for the first time in 2021 (Genshin).

Technically, nothing would stop us to add more slots. It would be a bit overwhelming for some, but it would not be an issue for me.

This problem also makes me realise why i haven't really paid attention to GOTY articles for years, lol. By the time i play the game it's a year or two late.

You can use the Steam library. You only need to display your list of games, and sort it by release date.

You will see something like this: anything between Jan 1, 2020 and Dec 31, 2020 should be fine.

Release date is shown at the bottom of the cover.

If you have not added many F2P games, the list of candidates should be small. Otherwise, you may want to create a dynamic collection of games which you have started at least once, and then sort this collection (rather than your whole library of games) by release date.
