Damn, so many hardcore FF fans here. :sweaty-blob:

I've yet to play Final Fantasy 7. I was never into JRPGs, especially during the PS1 era, but that changed when I "accidentally" bought a copy of Digital Devil Saga for the PS2 because the back cover looked awesome. I don't quite remember the exact wording, but there was a part of the text that said "You can turn into demi-humans. Half-Demon, Half-Human." And I thought to myself, oh wow, this reminds me of DMC! Must be a cool action game! I soon realized it WASN'T an action game once I came across the first random battle. "Fuck, I've bought one of them turn-based games. Ugh." Anyway, I decided to stick with it because the whole presentation of the game was dark, moody & atmospheric. And that's the story of how I got exposed to the awesome JRPG genre. Played nearly every JRPG on the PS2 after that.

So yeah, I gotta thank DDS for getting me into JRPGs. I bet you don't hear that often. :p

As someone who have played every single mainline Final Fantasy title, including the MMOs, I'm never a fan of ranking the games because it always lead to shitting on the least favorite ones. Every game has its own story and characteristics, and that's what I love about the series.

The real question is which is SEs favorite? Aka which one are they willing to milk the longest?

They can milk anything that makes money whether they like the game or not. Mobile games accounted for their biggest revenue stream in the past few years (2020 earnings: Mobile 106.4B Yen, MMO 40.1B Yen, HD games 42B Yen), but that doesn't mean that mobile games are their favorites.

FInal Fantasy lists!

Here we go!

FF I:
Completed this as part of a "Let's complete all the FF games" challenge I did with my friends 10 or so years ago. (None of us finished the challenge). I played the PSX version (emulated), and it was a nice, if simplistic game. It was cool to see where the series began.

FF II:
Continuing on with the challenge, I also completed FF II. This one had more story, a weirder leveling system and not much else to mention. Again, played the PSX version (emulated). I gamed the leveling system as much as I could and then tried to blaze through the story.

FF III:
The endpoint of my part of the challenge with my friends. I tapped out before the final dungeon. Played the DS version of the game (emulated).
I don't have much positive to say about this game. Didn't enjoy it much.

FF IV:
Completed this in the early 00's, after I had played VI. It was fine, but since I had already been spoiled by the story of VI, I did not appreciate the simple story.

FF V:
Never finished this one. Attempted it a few times over the 00's, but it didn't grab me as much.

FF VI:
Here it is! My absolute favorite! A fantastic game in all aspects! Completed it back in the early 00's and loved every second of it.

FF VII:
Completed this in the middle of the 00's. A fantastic game as well, I found some of the story parts to be a bit bewildering regarding Cloud/Zack/Sephiroth/JENOVA etc, but I liked it a lot.

FF VIII:
Never completed this one. Tapped out somewhere around the third disc. I liked the story, never understood the junctioning system, and hated the draw magic system. Don't get me started on the weird and incomprehensible card game.

FF IX:
Just barely touched this one. Immediately liked Vivi, and appreciated that the game attempted to get back to the series roots. But in the same way, it did not stand out as much as its three predecessors.

FF X:
Another favorite! I LOVED the battle system in this. Being able to see exactly when everyone gets their turn is chef's kiss. The story is interesting, even if some of the characters are a bit stupid. Completed it back in the middle of the 00's.

FF X-2:
Interesting battle system, weird campaign/story. Never finished it.

FF XI:
MMO = hard pass

FF XII:
What was the story of this again? Some kind of invasion? Sky pirates? Two beginning characters that pretty much don't affect the story and are only along for the ride?
Did not like the constant loading between zones on the PS2. Seemed structured like an MMO. Didn't finish it.
I would like to get the Zodiac edition and try it out again on PC.

FF XIII:
Corridor-bonanza! And weird words! And you have to read the log to understand the story!
Haven't finished this one.

FF XIII-2:
Just tried it a little a few months ago. Haven't really formed an impression yet.

FF XIV:
MMO = hard pass

FF XV:
It feels like I've fallen off the series now, so I have never been interested in this one at all.

And then.......

FF VII: Dirge of Cerberus
Nice cutscenes. Weird story. Where were these losers (the bad guys) during the main story? The action-shooter-platformer-RPG hybrid did not exactly work very well, but I still find it interesting to mention. Liked 2 of the Gackt songs in it. Completed it once, and traded in the game shortly afterwards.

(Sidebar: Hey, remember when you used to trade in games? And it was actually WORTH anything?)

damn right, it's fucking 9:17am :blobclosecry:
Ubisoft returns to Steam and their recent games will fill the charts? 😋

Ah PC-tan I saw the game and yes, it will be in the top seller list for some time.
Subverse is potentially a global top seller that will stay there a few weeks, three? four? who knows.

With the exception of Valhalla I don't see any of the Ubi games over the past 2 years lighting up the steam top sellers with their return.

They could do good by doing a humble bundle with steam keys or something tbh.

IF Ubi returns it will be with their subscription service "a la EA" and I don't think Valhalla would be the only one reaching the charts at least not in the short term but I doubt it's happening this year so, we will have to wait and see.

FFX to a certain extent (or part of the game) allows you to play how you want until mid-game where it is pretty clear that Tidus, Wakka, and Rikku are the only characters worth using.
I think that's going a bit too far, given that none of the (SP) FF games are actually that hard. I'd argue that you can use any party in any of them, it's just a hidden difficulty setting :p

I'm a bit torn on the whole issue actually. From a game design and balance perspective, having very similarly capable characters is useful and makes things easier. But personally I've always preferred systems where characters are very distinct -- not just in strengths and weaknesses, but ideally also with unique skills or even entirely unique mechanics. This is one of the things that makes FF6 with its relatively large cast of characters so interesting -- all of them have unique mechanics.

This is the reason why I love The Legend of Dragoon, if you are not skilled in the additions, you can only use certain characters (one character has no combo input and a healer and godlike with spells, they are basically cheat code) or not just use the insane additions. It forces you to learn the game no matter how shitty it in a lot of its parts otherwise you would never get out of Disc 1. People can finish any FFs without even trying, people give up on The Legend of Dragoon on some storyline bosses, and I love it for it. Of course, this is relative to people being prepubescent when it came out, but when I replayed it, it was actually easier than how I remembered it.

I know this is old, but this is yet an example of why I like to own my games. I decided not to play the game on PC game pass and just bought it instead (haven't played it yet). The game will most likely leave game pass long before all the updates are out.
It'll probably be in a Humble Choice before the roadmap is complete :ripblob:

I do like how that roadmap seems to have convinced people to wait on playing it. Posts on the other site seem to lean that way now. I can't imagine that being the intended effect.

I doubt that. Spiritfarer seems like it's also selling quite well, has good reviews and it's a long game.

Same reason why I bought other games like Wasteland 3. No way in hell Im gonna play a l0ng game and risk game pass fucking it up and be on the mercy of a sub service in case of future content updates.

@ Final Fantasy: I'm not into JRPGs... Im not much into Japanese games in general... but I've played some Final Fantasy games, as well.
- FF 6 on Android, which I liked a bit, but then decided I'd rather play it on PC, and when it arrived on Steam I didnt buy it, and have yet to do so. But as you know, there's always a million other things to play, and it surely wasnt THAT interesting.

- I played almost through all of FF 13, which wasnt very good but for some reason I liked it anyway? I especially liked Lightning, who was otherwise perceived as bland. Anyway, when the game opened up more after the "corridor bonanza", it also started getting grindy, so I just watched the rest of the story on Youtube.

-I did play FF13-2 and Lightning Returns, but each of those only for a little while.

- I also played 15 for a little while. Usually takes about 30-60 minutes to drop off games when they dont grab me.

Though don't do it for more than a turn or two or you will start ammo explosions, or literally killing your pilot (Which you can also do btw).
Is it wrong that I find this ridiculously cool? Thank you so much for all the tips and explanations! I was indeed treating overheat too lightly, to me internal damage was just a lore-themed warning before shutdown. I didn't realize it was melting and hurting modules under the armor!

I think I only saw one occurence of ‘my fave is FFVI’. I’m deeply hurt.

And as I already said here, I have a really difficult relationship with XII, but that’s on me, the dev had to finish the game sometime after all. The writing is so good, the cast is rich, each character seems to have layer, you are not sure where the plot goes, who is the baddy, you second guess things, it’s really great... until the end that throws all that away to go back in the stupid ‘I want MOAR power !’ mold.
I guess the game had to be finished sometime, as I already said, but it really soured the whole thing in my mind. All those layers, for that ?

Depends on what you like, you have the ones that expand the game without increasing the challenge:

Green Cities: Overall gorgeus, over 300 assets for building an eco-city, but mostly aestethic. Adds also renewable energy things.

After Dark: Mostly aesthetic but diversifies the game economy and brings tourism and commerce areas. Also adds cycling (bike highways, cycling areas, etc)

Parklife: To add zoo, parks, fairs and some basic zoo management.

Campus: Huge, new missions and discoveries, more options and assets for schools and universities.

Industries: Makes the game approach games like Tropico or other builders, when you can take an industrial path, one of the most meaty dlc where you can manage an industrial city, customize your pipelines, adds services and mail carriers to your city.

Then you have the dlc that add features, but also add difficulty to the game, something that some people don't like.

Mass Transit: Adds a lot of public transport options but also transit kinda becomes a constant problem you have to solve.

Natural Disasters: Probably the most controversial since adds features that can destroy parts of your city and tranform it into a miserable place to live. (you can turn it off). The effects are pretty but seems hard to recommend.

Snowfall: Adds heat pipes and district heating, and snow becomes a big problem you also need to solve, especially at the beginning, but almost all of its features are contained into three or four maps. If you like to play in a green or tropical area you probably won't notice you even have it.

(sorry, it's kinda long and i'm at work and can't proofread)
Hey thanks for the recommendations, turns out I already had After Dark, Mass transit and Parklife!
I had £10 left in my wallet so ive just added Campus and Green Cites.

Now to actually play the game!

Thank you for the wonderful reply! I just had one nagging question if you can - what's internal damage, exactly? Damage dealt to internals, the orange part of the HP, or is just lore to say that you are about to be shutdown?
Each part has 2 HP bars so to say: Armor (white) & Internal/Core/Structure (Orange).
You can manipulate the armour each part has in the mech configuration menu, sorry I can't remember the exact name but it's related with the mechanic. Be aware that more armour means the mech will be heavier and youl'll need to drop some equipment in order to keep it within it's weight limit. The core HP is fixed and depends on the mech model. You'll want to avoid internal damage at all costs because:
  • A mech with internal damage will need to be repaired, meaning you'll need to put it out of commision for a few days. The more severe the damage the longer the repairs take. Armor damage doesn't need to be repaired, which is a bit silly imho, so if your mech only had armour damage in the previous battle you can reuse in the following fight at 100% armor and hp. If you reuse a mech with internal damage in the following fight it will start with 100% armor and whatever % hp it finished the last fight with;
  • Internal damage can destroy a part and any equipment you might have attached to it. For instance, if I have 2 lasers attached to an arm and that arm is destroyed I'll permanently lose those 2 lasers. There are also implications to the current battle which are obvious as you'll become less effective and it can easilly snowball from a destroyed part to a destroyed mech to a complete team wipe. There's also an interesting mechanic regarding ammo caches where if you kill a part with ammo stored in it, it will explode and do increased damage (armor and internal) to all the surrounding parts.
The game doesn't explain a lot in the beggining but the UI is excellent at showing the state of your mech's armour and core hp. Take the following random image:

The white parts are the ones with 100% armor. As the part loses armour the colour gets greyer and when the armour is at 0% the part becomes orange/black, which means the part is exposed and any hit to it will result in core damage. If that part core hp gets to 0% it will become completely black.

Shutdown happens when your mech overheats. The heat gauge is located between the hp/armour bar (white+orange) and the stability bar (yellow) and is dark orange/red. Every weapon you use and every action other than normal movement generates some heat and each turn your mech can vent some heat, the amount depends on weather and equipment you have. If the overall heat goes over the threshold (the white pip on the bar with a red line) you'll suffer some internal damage each turn you end the turn over the threshold. If the heat keeps increasing and reaches 100% your mech will also shutdown, which means it will not be able to act in the following turn.

Thank you! Even though the question had been answered before, yours adds other points which I didn't know, such as armor being effectively space-duct tape.

I'm also really appreciative of the tactical tips given that I play with mods, meaning saving during battle is broken. It's getting a little ironman-y and I don't really enjoy that part :p.

By the way, I can't remember how others have dealt with this, seeing how with indie titles on EGS they do mention that it's 1 year of exclusivity but SE has already said that at this time it does not have any announcements to make about KH coming to others stores.

By the way with Shenmue were they not basically saying that it would be EGS Exclusive forever but then after the backlash or something ended up saying that they would also release it on Steam after the contract was over?

When it comes to AAA almost none of the companies have shared words about other stores, it's nothing new, however their wording and my own knowledge makes this be the usual timed exclusive with Steam in mind, however I don't know if it's 12, 6 or 1 month, you will all have to wait and see.
