We just finished a successful sixth season of the Backlog Blitz. We had 23 participants with 115 game goals set and 78 of them were completed. Congrats on clearing out those backlogs! Wibblewozzer was the big winner this time with winning the first draw of the prize for completing Steins;Gate. Make sure to congratulate them here or at the previous thread! Since that's me I already decided on what I'm getting with the prize pool and that left more for gabbo so also congratulate them for the second draw in the raffle. They win for their completion of Halo 2.

It's Spring in the Northern Hemisphere so it's time for some Spring Cleaning. Clean out those backlogs and make room for new games you won't play to add at a later Blitz!

But that means it's time to start anew. The spreadsheet has been updated, the prize pool has been reset, and with all the delays that continue in the gaming industry this is a wonderful time to work on those games you set aside but meant to get back to.

Pick your games accordingly!

What it is:

It's a simple way to clear out some backlog games. You select a number of specific games you want to complete and if you complete them in a set time frame you have a chance to pick a game of your choice within the prize limits.

Rules:

First off, there is no time limit on when you can join. If you come in late and only have a month left please feel free to join. Even one completed game will get you entered into the raffle detailed below.

Everyone shares the same rules so an agreed amount of time would be set (three months this time) and then a set amount of games you want to complete in that time (been using five games). You then pick your specific five games with the intention that you don't go changing it all the time. The idea isn't that once you beat some game you go and list it and mark it complete. Instead you pick five games to complete at the start of the Blitz and ideally you complete them as well as anything else you want to finish in that time.

Prize:

In the end I suggest a prize pool and a simple raffle done. I always chip in $20 to start it and accept any other additions. Raffle winners must use at least half but can go up to the full price of a game (capped at $60 if the prize pool gets large enough). Leftover goes to the next drawn winner until it gets down to $0 (or close enough at which point I'll just add it to the next Blitz).

Thoughts?

There's no entry fee or anything so there's really no loss for taking part or starting it and then ignoring it. It's just a fun way to clear out backlog games and have discussion about what you're completing. And commiserate if you pick a game you don't enjoy and sour one of your spots on your list.

I created the Google Sheet so feel free to add yourself and games:

And for those curious with the prize pool I'm using $25 to go towards Kara no Shoujo Second Episode when it goes on sale next.

I've mentioned in the previous thread but I put a theme for myself this time to get through Metroidvania games. I love the genre but I've been buying them and haven't finished all of them as well as started some, had a good time, and never returned to finish them. With that in mind my five games this time around in no particular order:

  • Aquaria
  • Valdis Story: Abyssal City
  • Pharaoh Rebirth+
  • Mummy Demastered
  • Wuppo
I have started and played all but Mummy Demastered but I only put in around 10-30 minutes at most across each of those I started. I know I'm looking forward to them but I do fear Aquaria might feel too dated in some ways?

I have more Metroidvanias waiting (and just bought that Record of Lodoss War game from the same team that did Pharaoh Rebirth+) so I will likely try to knock out some others on top of these five. We'll see how I do since this is a Yakuza/Judgment heavy quarter.

I ended not managing to finish NiOh last season (didn't even start it, shame on me). This time I will finish all five games for sure. I hope.

Did you intend to have Yakuza 6 in your list? You wrote Yakuza 5: The Song of Life. I'd correct it but just in case you meant Yakuza 5 I figured best for you to fix.

Thanks for the heads-up. It was supposed to be Yakuza 6, yes, fixed it.

Congratulations on your first win Wibblewozzer

Here are my games for this blitz:
Darksiders 3
Tales of Berseria
Code Vein
Record of Lodoss War-Deedlit in Wonder Labyrinth-
Supraland

I was also going for metroidvania as Wibblewozzer, but since I didn't find any I took some other games. I am continuing with the Darksiders series since I played the second game in the last blitz

Congrats to the winners!

Haven't decided on my full blitz yet but I'm definitely going to play Shin Megami Tensei IV on the 3DS and Stormland on the Oculus Rift.

I played all the Darksiders games last year and thought they pretty much got better with each one all the way through to Genesis. Darksiders 1 felt a bit old (very much had that "360" feel), Darksiders 2 was really great but did feel like it had a bit too much filler (rule of 3, anyone?), Darksiders III has that Souls-like thing going for it that took me some time to get into but I loved it once I upgraded a bit and got a good feel for things, and Genesis is simply a fantastic game that's constantly fun. I did the vast majority of content in Genesis including replaying levels just for achievements and working on goals. I really hope they make a Genesis 2 eventually.

My partner and I finally agreed on a 4K that hit our criteria for size, quality and price, after we saw a friend's LG 49" Nano85 - I was dead set on the CX 48", but she scoffed at the £1300 cost. But when we saw our friend's Xbox Series X running on the Nano85 I knew it'd be a significant upgrade from my old 1080p TV that I wouldn't mind not having an OLED, and it's currently in clearance for £599.

I've never been too fussed on HDR so the lack of HDR 10+ is not a big deal, but having HDMI 2.1 and 120hz (with a 40-120fps range in VRR) is a big deal for me, so I'm pretty excited to get this TV.

But with a new TV in mind, I've designed my Blitz partially based on that:

1. SUPERHOT VR - Replaced SMT IV because my 3DS died.
2. Control: Ultimate Edition - A good RTX and DLSS game that's going to really make good use of VRR while I can crank up the settings.
3. The Talos Principle VR - I always have a VR game on my Blitz.
4. Life is Strange 2 - I dropped this a while ago because I was terribly disappointed at the direction Dontnod went in, but I'm ready to try it again.
5. Tomb Raider (2013) - I've wanted to replay this for a while, and it's old enough that I shouldn't have too many issues hitting 120fps in this game. I've never played a game at such a high framerate before so I'm excited to see what it's like!

Is Genesis a spinoff game or part of the main series? It's the only Darksiders game that I don't own

I'm hoping that the season pass for DS3 is on sale during blitz so I can buy it before I start playing the game

Genesis is a spin-off prequel thing. Did you play either of those top-down Lara Croft games? It's like that was used as a starting point and then expanded on from there. I really liked those but this has far more to it, much better action, and feels really good and looks nice.

I have played the first top down Lara Croft game many years ago, and thought it was fun. Sadly I still haven't beaten that game :(

I hope that they make the fourth and probably final game in the series

This time around I'm going to pick games which is on my shame achievement list.

So for now it looks like the following

1. Monkey Island™ 2 Special Edition: LeChuck’s Revenge™
2. Anomaly: Warzone Earth
3. Borderlands 2
4. Dead Island
5. TBA.

The goal is beside beating the game, it will also be to get at least enough achievements so I'm on the green side of achievement completion of one specific game :upside-down-face:

These are my 5.

The Sexy Brutale, was reminded of it in the last thread and was always intrigued by the premise so now is a good time to play it.
Okami HD, played quite a bit of the original back on PS2 but never finished it.
Stacking, played some of it on 360 but also never finished. I have bunch of other DF games in my backlog too, but I'm starting with this one.
Nioh, had it in my previous list but switched to Mass Effect Andromeda at some point, and now it's back.
The House of Da Vinci, it looks like one of those environmental puzzle games in the vein of The Room that I enjoy but don't play enough of, time to change that.

I don't know how often I added Dragon Quest IX to my blitz here (and elsewhere) but this time I will finish it for real.

My list is probably

  • Ratcher & Clank (2016)
  • Yakuza 6
  • The Sea Will Claim Everything
  • Fallout 2
  • Paradise Killer
Should be doable. Almost done with Ratchet & Clank. Feels better with the 60FPS patch on PS5 but still think it isn't very good.

Congrats to the winners! Here's my list for this Blitz:

  • Steamworld Heist:
  • Cho Dengeki Stryker
  • Thunder Wolves
  • Hyperdimension Neptunia Re;Birth1
  • War Tech Fighters

I was not doing so good in the last two blitzes so I will try to stick to these games in the coming month. Already advancing Steamworld Heist and Cho Dengeki Stryker nicely. Both are really fun games. Thunder Wolves and Neptunia 1 has been sitting in my backlog for years, so maybe it is time to start playing them. Remember getting War Tech Fighters and some other games on GMG for 1 buck last year. It actually looks pretty fun and it is rare to see a super robot game developed by a western developer. So I am pretty excited to get my hands on it.

Sigh, just realised my Apr-Jun 2021, is having to repeat my failed Apr-Jun 2020 attempt at some games. I'm more organised now so hopefully I can work through these.

  • Xcom 2
  • Psychonauts in the Rhombus of Ruin
  • Star Wars: Squadrons
  • Return to the Obra Dinn
  • Outriders

Though technically I'm also stretching onto:

  • Yakuza 5 Remastered
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Disco Elysium
  • Doom Eternal DLC
  • Half-Life Alyx 2nd playthrough
  • Dark Souls

So I'll switch out which ever I settle on haha.

Stalin Subway was... yikes. I've played eurojank before, but that was a weekend of pain. I've never had to use noclip to progress in an actual campaign, but somehow the game was so broken I couldn't trigger doors to open. Well, at least I can move on to something else and eventually the sequel...
Avoid unless you like pain.

So the battery on my 3DS has died, so I've had to take all my 3DS games off my backlog until I get that sorted.

I replaced Shin Megami Tensei IV with SUPERHOT VR, and enjoyed it a fair bit. I feel like the SUPERHOT team don't really respect the player's space while in VR, though.

I've had this game on both PSVR (where it was garbage because of the PSVR hardware limitations) and now on PC where I feel like I have a reasonably big living room and even I find myself bumping into the walls or TV because of how much space this game demands.

I get it, it's an early VR game compared to modern games that have more restrained arm movement, but I honestly don't think they played this in an average person's play space, or they'd have not made a few design decisions that they did. They also wouldn't have released it on PSVR full stop.

But overall, I enjoyed it, except when I had to stop playing out of fear that I'd just punched a hole through my TV.

I don't think I've posted my selection in this thread yet.

Went with a PnC/Adventure theme, so we have:
  • Little Misfortune
  • Tsioque
  • Smile For Me
  • Finding Paradise
  • Detective Di: The Silk Rose Murders
this time.

All a bit on the shorter side since I'm kind of playing some longer games on and off at the side too.
I might replace Finding Paradise with something else though if it's anything like To The Moon, not sure if I'm in the mood for something as emotional/sad.

I've been working on some of The Mummy Demastered off and on the past few nights as the start of my Metroidvania blitz. It's...fine? I think maybe its quality was conflated because of how bad the movie was so people were surprised the game wasn't terrible but overall it's honestly a pretty low-tier Metroidvania game out of all the others I've played.

I don't mind completing it, and thankfully it's quite short, but I'm also glad this was my first one I played as I'm hopeful they all are better after this one. I'm around 40% map completion in like 1.5 hours so I'll probably be all done exploring and collecting in a few more hours.

Steamworld Heist down. It's really, really good. I will probably start a New Game+ playthrough at the highest difficulty down the road. This playthrough and the remaining achievements seem to be real challenging so I will leave it for now and play some other games first.

MG Survive is better than one would expect.
I genuinely enjoyed exploring the dust. It's so close to being thoroughly enjoyable too, they just tweaked their survival meters to be a bit too annoying.
The base defense stuff sucks though.

It feels like they could have actually had a good game if they had had somewhere there pointing out to them that hey this part here shows promise, focus on that.

What did you think? With me recently finishing Revengeance I've been putting a little more thought to going into Survive. Did you play it entirely solo?
For all the bad press it got at release it's a surprisingly engaging exploration/crafting/base building game with the polished action/stealth mechanics of MGSV. The game doesn't feel too long or too short and the story is as ridiculous as the previous games. I went thru the whole campaign solo and I'd like to play coop.

Already 2/5 down with Tomb Raider (2013) done. I got a 4K TV on Friday and blasted through the game at 4K 120fps. Feels like a whole new game, honestly. I actually think I'll be going through my older PC games from the PS3/360-era and playing them again because of this. I remember doing similar with games that were PS2/Xbox/GameCube-era games when I upgraded to 1080p and the feeling was similar.

Yeah, I played some of those games (eg. Tomb Raider, Batman Arkham Aslyum, Assassin's Creed etc.) at 1080p/60fps on PC and they feel like new games already. I will never be able to play Assassin's Creed at sub-30 framerate again.

Finished Ratchet & Clank 2016

Thought it was bad. Jokes that don’t land, uninspired level design, bland weapon arsenal and the game is always so busy with particles that makes it hard to read the action and thus avoiding shots. The only things I liked was scorching little enemies with the flamethrower en masse and the second to last boss fight.

I managed to get the worst ending in Dead Mountaineer's Hotel but I'm stuck, most likely soft-locked because a character won't talk to me despite doing everything available. I checked a walkthrough and it seems that in some part I broke sequence and skipped a third of the game. Quality programming there. I even got a different character killed and no walkthrough mentions this. Maybe I made the story go through a prototype branch, who knows.

The game is the most disjointed, unfocused and boring P&C game I've ever played. Going to check the "good" ending on youtube. That should be 2/5.

NepNep was testing my patience so I decided to push out NepNep from my list. My current mood demands for a more serious experience than NepNep.

Switched to the Bard's Tale Trilogy, a game that is completely devoid of any Japanese cuteness. Promising start.

And don't ever say NepNep again.

I'm closing in on 2/3 of the map uncovered in The Mummy Demastered. Since I haven't backtracked a ton for items it probably means I'm closer to around 3/4 through the main story. I think I'll finish the area I'm in and get the last main ability going off of the flow of events the game has had. From there I'll consider collecting everything before finishing it up. It's not a great Metroidvania but it's okay.

I am currently playing Tales of Berseria. Kinda slow start, I hope the pacing will be faster later in the game.

Darksiders 3 is part of weeklong sale and the deluxe pack is also on sale, should I get it now or later? Darksiders 3 is one of my blitz games, but not currently playing

Yeah, unfortunately, the pacing in ToB isn't going to change much. You'll also get something that will allow you to travel on foot quicker later on. The dungeons/overworld in the game suffer from the same problem that Zestiria did. They are large for sake of just being large; padding out the game.

First game complete: The Mummy Demastered.

I went in with reservations, slightly hopeful, but guessing I'd not think it was all that great. But I love the Shantae games so maybe WayForward would do it again!

They did not do it again. It's completely average and I'd never recommend anyone else play it with many other better games in the genre available. Also, my annoyance with the game lead me to not bother getting 100% completion in the game and I tend to at least attempt it if I'm enjoying a game enough.

Yeah, unfortunately, the pacing in ToB isn't going to change much. You'll also get something that will allow you to travel on foot quicker later on. The dungeons/overworld in the game suffer from the same problem that Zestiria did. They are large for sake of just being large; padding out the game.
That sucks :(
My brother gave me a cheat table which would at least speed up walking speed. The builtin speedhack in Cheat Engine doesn't work
The game is overwhelming, so many mechanics to learn and all I want is to play the game. I am afraid that I won't learn everything in the game and the battles start to get harder :(

Storywise I am in where I broke through a big wall so a ship can pass through it. I believe that this game will take the whole month for me to finish

Haha, yeah the mechanics can seem overwhelming at first. Although, compared to Zestiria, it's much more streamlined. And when compared to most other Tales games, it's also shorter.

A few pointers to help make combat encounters easier:
  • Velvet cannot die when she's in her break soul form. She also can't be staggered nor inflicted with status ailments. You can use her break move to clear any status ailments she may have. Something to keep in mind.

  • Velvet's break soul also resets her combo chain. For example, if you wanted to repeatedly perform the first two attacks in the chain, then hit Square twice and then break soul. Rinse & Repeat.

  • To make elemental attacks easier to remember, try to map a single element to the face buttons. Say, for example, Square = All attacks with the fire element.

  • Eizen's break soul is excellent for clearing out mobs quickly. You can use him to stun/knockdown a group of mobs and spam his break soul move. Put Coercion at the start of Eizen's combos. Once you unlock Eleventh Hour, use it as a combo finisher. Focus on moves which stun and knockdown the enemy.

  • Play the game on an easier difficulty. You don't need to worry about mechanics as much and can button mash your way through for the most part.

  • Also try playing the game on Manual mode. You have more control over you positioning and actions.
I'd recommend focusing on using Velvet & Eizen only until you've gotten accustomed to the mechanics. Forget about everyone else. If you try to play/learn them as you go, you'll only overwhelm yourself more. :p

Thanks for the tip!
Do you have any tips on how to get higher combos?
Is there something I should think about on how to set the artes?

For achieving higher combos, setting a single elemental type to your face buttons is a good way to go about it. Exploit weakness = higher combo chain. Enemy weakness are exploited in two ways, through the elements and/or enemy race. If you look at a particular Arte, you'll notice certain icons.

The "Dragon" icon indicates that all enemies in the game that belong to this race are weak against this Arte. This is an enemy type weakness. It will ignore any elemental resistances an enemy has. Say, later down in the game you come across an enemy that is resistant to every element, then exploit their enemy type weakness. It will bypass their resistances. Also, Velvet has another mechanic where these type attacks matter. It gives her certain advantages in her Break Soul form. But I don't think you need to worry about that now. :p Happy to explain, though!

For Velvet, focus on Martial Artes. Hidden Artes are mostly for exploiting weakness as they deal the least amount of damage. (It scales off A.Attk)

Use the sidestep to build up souls and get around the enemy. If they enemy has their guard up, use the guard break move and then follow up with an attack that exploits their weakness. Also, keep track of your soul count. Higher Souls = penalties. At 1 Soul Count, you have a 2x times chance to stun the enemy. At 6, it drops down to half that. If you have a higher soul count, then you'll also take more damage. Keep in mind though that the same logic applies to enemy. An enemy with 6 souls will receive 1.5x times the damage.

Make use of the Switch Blast. It costs 1 BG to switch to another character, however, if you quickly switch back to your main character again (Velvet -> Eizen -> Velvet) it won't cost you any BG. There are two additional types of BG switches, too. If you defend while switching, the next character will come out in a defensive position. If you switch while holding down the R2/Break soul move button, then they'll come out and perform their break soul. For example, if Velvet stuns a group of mobs and you want to use Eizen's break soul asap, then do a Break Soul Switch Blast.

Remember, STUNNED enemies take 2x more damage. So STUN STUN STUN :thumbsupblob:

A fun little thing I got curious about. I figured out how to adapt the game counting code that handles the list on the right side of the Blitz that lists the games and frequency of their selection to now track across all the different Blitzes. I created a tab that's at the very end of the Sheet titled "Every game in the Blitz" and it now has a total of all the games so you can look through if curious and be surprised by what has been the most Blitz picked games!

One note is that while I typically clean up game names in individual seasons when a game is listed twice but with slightly different names I haven't bothered doing that across the seasons. So for example there are separate listings for Trails of Cold Steel IV and The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel IV. Maybe one of these days I'll go back through and try to update everything to be uniform. But I'm not bothered enough to do it now.
