GuliKit is going to sell HAL sticks for the Steam Deck, those are the same in the Aya Neo Pro and in their King Kong 2 Pro controller.

Can you click these new thumbsticks? I thought that Alp had a patent on clickable thumbsticks

Please, check your unsupported games because this might happen, as you might remember Ghost of a Tale was unsupported and here we are.
It is strange that Valve is not sending developers detailed infos on why their game has been rated as "unsupported". Maybe some toothing problems in their testing framework. I would assume that the plan is for devs to receive info on these reports quickly

Will the packed-in charger provide enough wattage through a USB-C Hub with power delivery, monitor connected, so it doesn't drain during heavy load?

Limiting the framerate to 30fps strongly impacts the battery life. Without limits, I can play Dark Souls 3 for about 1 hour 45 minutes. At 30fps, I can play for over 4 hours!
Nice, the battery life video from Phawx showed how much more time you can gain with that. Combining it with FSR will make that effect even better. How did you find the FSR for non-native supported games? I guess it makes UI elements hard to read depending on the resolution. I think not every game supports lower-than-native res as well.

Curious how the result is for DS1 and DS2 @60fps since they are older.

Either way thanks the info on DS3. I love hearing all the tests on older AAA games like 2016 and before. That is pretty much what I will be using mine for most when I get it. And indies + emulation ofc.

I haven't tried FSR so far. I need to look into it how this works exactly. I'm having too much fun with DS3 for now ;)

On linux it work, i'm on xorg and it stutter a lot, probably i should switch to wayland
Seems pretty fluent on my end when using xorg, but I also wasnt' using it in fullscreen so maybe harder to notice any stutters that way.

I'm looking for a tutorial to play Mass Effect Trilogy (Origin) on Steam Deck. Do I need Lutris to do so or is there an easier way?

I am on Wayland and fullscreen is kinda laggy using keyboard.

Edit: Anyone can get the new overlay working. The quicksetting menu would be amazing :)

Reason: Proton update

i actually never tried installing Origin on Linux, but you could try Lutris, or try this approach:

which is for the EGS, but in principle this way could work for Origin too – its worth a shot

Got my Deck.

It's almost the dream device. Even with my smaller hands, it's easy to reach everything. It doesn't feel heavy and the screen looks great.

However I have run into a whole ton of bugs here and there.
My first game I tried Deus Ex GOTY, actually isn't "playable" with good default graphics per the compatibility rating. Instead there are some severe colour issues, almost like 256 colours. Gradients don't seem to work correctly so you get a weird saturated bright look but also super dark areas that look completely wrong. So that was very disappointing, but hopefully they can work on it, or I can test the other proton versions for a solution.

Also it seems Steam Controller owners or binding users run into issues setting things in the configuration tool, so that also sucks.

Worst thing about the deck has to be the fan. It's got a high pitch whine to it. So if I choose to play it at night in bed and someone else is with me, it's simply going to be hugely iratating for the other person unless they are willing to also wear headphones or something. That's not an issue with Switch. Unless there is some magical software fix for that, I'd consider this a design flaw that imo should be pretty obvious.

Having said all that, that's all the bad stuff. Everything else has been great. It lets me play a whole bunch of my Steam games well. It's definitely come in hot, and needs work, so it will definitely be frustrating and disappointing if you hit those walls unexpectedly, but otherwise it's so damn nice, making it easier to forgive these issues. I'm also very confident in Valve's update cycle. The one unknown is just how well they will work on correcting incorrect compatibility reviews and if they will have an avenue for discussing game compatibility issues better, rather than just the hardware.

Does the steampal ui trick give you a new overlay?

Also that GuliKit vid was interesting, very curious about those sticks.

I think some people said bringing up the "overlay" just opens the main menu, not the in-game menu.

I haven't tried it, but it's clearly not ready to go on non-Steam Deck devices just yet.

Yeah it opens the main menu. Navigation wise the new UI works amazing on a steam controller, however loads of wasted space on a 4k screen.

Edit: ooh pressing shutdown in steam actually seems to shutdown my computer.

Interesting. Like, if it's just "alt tabbing" to the desktop environment, and the controller works there just fine and you can easily check achievements or something, maybe it doesn't need an "overlay" as such.

Very curious to see how it's all implemented on the desktop in the end.

Maybe I'll check it out myself too.

weird thing that i dont remember the devkit units having complains about it ... i even remember someone testing the sound and deck was one of the less loud similar devices

could be SW issuue with fancontrol
I think it's not the fan itself that makes the high noise, but rather the air going through the "ribs" of the cooler and through the protection grid. It's annoying, but my wife seems to tolerate it so far.

Just realised I may be able to walk past the Deus Ex GOTY woes on Steam Deck, by playing the Deux Ex Revision mod instead. Will test that now.
I do really like the deck so far, despite the many bugs and that damn fan.

More reports of fan on the unit being annoying.
Maybe you all should just cancel?
especially if you're in the EU, mid-tier pool
It's pretty bad. If only it didn't have the high pitch whine. It's not a problem when you have headphone on or are in a noisy room. Otherwise... yeah, its irritating, and you eventually tune it out. Its more being around others that I can immediately tell, it's going to annoy others. Especially at night

I was gonna suggest Deus Ex Revision! Havent played it myself so I wasnt sure if I should recommend it. A quick search revealed not everyone was happy with the changed, but its best to see for yourself :)
BTW I dont think the issues of Deus Ex GOTY are related to the Deck, that might just be Deus Ex being weird, I had similar colour issues when I last played it a few years back (on Windows)

~

regarding the fan: I'll probably get used to that quickly. My laptop also has an annoyingly loud fan :p

I am a bit of a pureist when it comes to Deus Ex as I have so much nostalgia for it, so I'd typically only go as far as the GMDX mod without the Gunther model update, since the rest of the mod is very vanila.

I suppose I was bound to try the Revision version sooner or later!
Itried it and got an error, but it was because I uninstalled the original. Once I reinstalled Deus Ex also , , , , IT WORKS!

Very pleased!!!!!!!

On one hand it sucks to read the reviews about the piss-poor display, the large bezels, the drifting, the flakey OS and the large number of issues people are having with games and the stuff about the high pitched annoying fan noise.

But on the other hand, it represents the biggest breakthrough in PC gaming in a long time, so I think I have to stick with it. I'll get the 3rd revision if they're every couple years, and deal with the initial launch version weaknesses. It'll be worth it for access to my whole Steam library more or less on a device that will evolve and get better. So even though the draw backs sound pretty crappy, I still think I'm going to find quite a lot of uses and it'll allow me to play games I'd not normally have been likely to.

piss-poor display = bullshit. I have it. It's better than switch. Obviously it's not OLED. You aren't going to die because of that

the large bezels = ymmv but this hasn't even crossed my mind when using it, so more yelping from "reviewers", much like the "heavy" weight, which is also nonsense, since again I can barely tell the difference vs a Switch, unless I hold in one hand, which will obviously feel worse because it is a longer device.

flakey OS and large number of issues = everything valve does is like this and was absolutely expected for me. I'm in now, because as much as I'll talk about it, I'm happy to dive in and see it evolve quickly, similar to SteamVR, Index etc

game compatibility = again known for years, and should be expected unless you balloon your expectations as some have done following their hype

high pitched annoying fan noise = yeah the one thing I thought I'd be fine with, and I am, It would be nice if it wasn't there but for the price and ease to work around it, I can let that slide.

Is it better than the Switch? I swore I read a few posts in this thread about it being terrible, washed out, lifeless etc. I guess I'm exaggerating, but posts like this "The screen is mediocre. Colors are flat, large bezels " but that's just me sorry - seriously, I tend to remember negative things easier. Switch I find to be perfectly fine, great even, so if you're saying it's better than the Switch's display that makes me happier about it!

The fan noise is unfortunate and hopefully it's less noisy than those PS4s I've read about haha. I'm a bit spoiled by my laptop the fans don't bother me even when playing demanding games, but I guess I won't know how I feel about that until I have it.

I mean, are bezels a surprise to anyone? We've seen plenty from the thing by now. It's an x inch screen, it's an x big system, we can tell. Would it be any different if instead of just the bezels it was the rest of the unit's shell encircling a same size screen? Or is the problem you want a bigger screen? Or a smaller system? 🤷‍♂️

I haven't gotten my unit yet, but the "screen is absymal" thing seems very weird to me. It seems everyone is saying it's better than the first Switch and that's okay in my book. If you want better screen and what not you would have to go with other devices and pay more than double.

You don't buy a cheap phone and then complain you don't have a Samsung OLED screen with 120hz

I’m not expecting the screen to be better than the Switch OLED, but saying it sucks is likely a gross exaggeration.

I think some people are just happy to fling shit around about this device for less than sincere reasons.

Agreed. The screen is not "bad", but the colors are too "soft" compared to my PC monitor. I guess I'm spoiled with the OLED screen on my Vita.

I think it's less a cost issue, and more a supply one. I would assume a Deck 2 will probably just come with decent OLED screens by default, since Valve will have good ideas about customer demand by then and can negotiate with a screen producer and secure the screens at a decent unit price.
