I mean, let people throw more money at indie devs if they want. He could be doing worse things with whatever money they have than this.

I dunno how successful this will be given that indie publishing is VERY hard to do well. But hey, better than just being rich and making youtube videos.

Just my two cents on the Nvidia announcement. For the first time in my life I'm considering the xx90 product since the xx80 is really awful pricing even for a high end product. There is a lot of factors working against Nvidia for this generation.

TSMC has everyone that wants to use their latest fabs over the barrel (AMD, Nvidia, Apple and others)
All components to build a gpu have gone up in price
Crypto blowing up means that Nvidia and AIB partners has way too many 30 Series cards
Already has cut guidance aka projections for Q3 due to lower PC demand in general
Obviously the current and near future with the economy in most of the world with increasing interest rates, weakening currencies vs the US dollar and whatnot.

I also don't foresee AMD undercutting by so much as they have the same issues with even less demand for their 6xxx series GPUs (they have much deeper sales right now in the USA). Not to mention that 5nm is being shared with the CPU chips as well. I would love to be wrong on this but I just can't see it.
The way I see it, I think just waiting 6-9 months will be very rewarding for anyone that is able to or want to upgrade.

Somebody at Nvidia India decided to switch on their brains during office hours yesterday and came to the realization that they wouldn't sell any GPUs at all at the prices they were asking for, so they went ahead and lowered them a bit. These are the changes;

4090 old price - ₹177,000 (~USD $2210)
4090 new price - ₹155,000 (~USD $1935)

4080 16gb old price - ₹133,000 (~USD $1660)
4080 16gb new price - ₹116,000 (~USD $1450)

4080 12gb old price - ₹99,500 (~USD $1245)
4080 12gb new price - ₹87,000 (~USD $1085)

They're still obviously not going to sell many cards with these new prices but they are a little less outrageous now. The 4080 16gb price is about $100 more than the 3080ti FE price was. The 4080 12gb price is about $70 more than what I paid for my Gigabyte 3080 a couple of years ago.

A friend told me that Nvidia is not actually making a 4080 12gb founder's edition card so I'm not sure why they're listing a price. Unlike in other countries, over here Nvidia only ever lists the price of FE cards on their website and never links to third party cards. So that's weird.

Unless RDNA3 offers good value or you're willing to buy in the used market, building a new PC is becoming as prohibitively expensive as anti-PC gaming people always made it out to be.
This is true. Anyone building a new PC at this specific moment in time will have to pay a lot to get a good, future proof build. One can argue that you don't need the latest and greatest hardware to enjoy most games and that's true, but I also don't think anyone should be building a DDR4 platform PC at this point. Doing that is just kicking the can down the road for when you have to pay for a full platform upgrade anyway.

I'll just wait for a decent mid-range card in the 4000 series. I'm currently using a 1660 super, which is great value for the €230 I payed for it. I'm a patient gamer so I don't need to play the latest AAA games when they are released. And over 90% of my gaming time is on the Steam Deck anyway.

Last but not least I can't even afford a €1000+ gpu as long as nearly half of my paycheck goes to gas and electricity. Thanks, Russia! 😡
I am also rocking a 1660 super and waiting for a 4060 or MAYBE 4070.
But because I play games that are mostly CPU or RAM bound (X3/x4, PDX Strategy games, Auroroa 4x, etc. I will probably just buy a complete new PC that has at least 62GB ram and a decent CPU

I'm glad I'm not into PC gaming for power reasons as I'm never paying those kinds of GPU prices. As long as I can still run the games I want with some acceptable compromises though there's no way I'm going back to consoles.

I'm still chugging along happy with just a Vega 56 at the moment. What I'll do next I don't know, I'll see whats actually required when more non cross gen games I actually want to play get ported. The fact Steam Deck exists and games have still been able to scale down to work on that thus far gives me hope I can ride out with what I have for some time yet.

Even for me, who'd easily spend 1600€ to upgrade to latest AMD/Intel cpu. / DDR5 / 4080.
just 1600€ for GPU is way too much (and since that's starting price, I suspect reality will be more like 1800€ for good models and since Nvidia refuses to sell FE's to Finland, starting price won't actually be even available)

I really hope people aren't filling to pay and nvidia is forced to discount.

The trade-off going from PC to console these days are far too big.

The only 2 things consoles has is cheaper entry and less tinkering, everything else is worse imo.

Yeah, I have been thinking about consoles, but way too much downsides: (in somewhat order)

  • no KBM support
  • PSVR2 isn't wireless
  • Paid cloud saves (at least on Sony)
  • Really need two of them
  • Feels waste to connect 4K console to 1440p display / 1080p projector, at least PC can increase graphics instead.

Xbox is actually the only console providing free cloud saves.

But as usual as it goes with console companies, MS could announce today they cloud saves will be locked behind game pass or something and people will just bend over to it and then it's goodbye to free xbox cloud saves.

Where do you get that from? the xbox community can be very vocal and even made microsoft withdraw a price increase they were planning to xbox gold.

If MS wants to do something, they will do it. Jason Schreier wrote in a tweet at the time that the price increase thing was most likely planned as a PR move. Doubling the price without any reason? So they quickly backed out and even made f2p games not require Xbox Gold. The rumor was also that they were gonna make online free, but the price was simply just doubled.

Xbox: pay 120$ a year to play fortnite
PS and Switch: pay 0$ a year to play Fortnite

They went from 60$ to play f2p and online yearly -> 120$ to play f2p and online yearly -> 60$ to play online yearly and f2p not requiring Gold anymore.

"most likely" sounds like speculation. Doesn't matter why it happened, point is that the community wasn't happy and made their voices heard, so why assume they would, "bend over" and take it when they have shown not to.

Doesn't matter if the comunity was happy or not, if MS wanted to do it, they would. I fully believe that MS, like Sony and Nintendo don't really give a fuck if their communities are happy or unhappy with something or not, if they want to do something, they will.

When the day comes and the game pass prices increased, the community can scream all they want, but MS will do it and people will accept it because they have become so ingrown to the game pass system they will just accept it.

But that wasn't the discussion, you were talking about how the community would gladly take it in the ass and you were just talking nonsense
I do believe a community will take it in the ass, never wrote "gladly", but they will take it in the ass because they don't have any other choice if they want to stay.

My 2080Ti and 3700x are still enough for 1440p gaming and I don't see myself upgrading unless I think 4k gaming at high franerates has become truly viable.

The 4090 and DLSS3 seem like an intriguing proposition, but I'll wait a year or so to see how it actually shakes out in vitro. Does DLSS3 get good adoption rates? Do modern PS5 gen games run well at 4K on this card?
Until the answers to these questions are clear, I'll just happily stick to my old build

Im still doing well with the GTX 1080 (mainly because I still use a 1080p monitor and it has gsync/freesync and I have no plans to upgrade) and I do think I have the money for the 4080, but it will still ultimately depend on price (norwegian retailer price), availability and pc specs for certain games like Starfield and Returnal.

Like, if Starfield and Returnal will play good on my PC I don't think I will upgrade.

As a PC player for over 13 years, power is one of the last things I care about with PC gaming these days.

My 2700X & RTX 2070 (non-super) are starting to show their age for my uses. They are struggling to run the big Bethesda games modlists i play these days and moreso in their VR versions so i'm in wait-and-see mode at the moment.

AMD announce stuff in November i think so i'll wait and see what they have to offer and then decide if i go for AMD or NVidia and also if i get a new system or just upgrade my cpu to 5800X & gpu with an RTX3 series and ride out a few years for the new kit settle in price etc.

As far I love PC gaming, I have to say many new releases from AAA games have been more expensive on Steam for me than they have been on consoles (PS5 or series X).
Some big publishers doesn’t sell keys day one. But you still can purchase Prepaid gift card on key sites. F.e. PS5 50 euros key card is 39,89 euros; 60 euros card 49,99 or 100 euros card is 79,99.
With this you can get cheaper games on consoles than you get new releases on PC.

Prices for AAA games at launch are roughly equivalent between console and PC for me but 90% of the time i can wait as they are not my main gaming focus. I do feel that if you are only really into AAA games then just go get a console tbh.

There's regular sales where i can pick up AAA games at mad discount and with a big library the newest-of-the-new AAA releases can wait, i've got enough games to get on with playing that i can ignore the AAA market for years and still be entertained. Especially when i can mod the hell out of older PC games and give them a new lease of life too.

I won't add anything groundbreaking here, but the beauty in consoles is their simplicity. I have been a PC gamer my whole life, I love it, but as I get older I want to spend less time tinkering and more time actually having fun. Using a PC from a coach on a big TV is a struggle. It's doable, but unless you have wireless M&K laying somewhere around you ( which is also not a perfect solution), you will keep hitting hurdles. It's far from a fun and enjoyable experience. With consoles you just need your controller, you can wake it wirelessly, sleep mode works beautifully. There is no tinkering.

That's why I will stick with my PC being on a desk connected to a monitor and PS5 to a TV. I wish I could play my Steam library on a TV, but it's just not a good experience.

Yeah the quick resume is bloody fantastic on the new xboxes, its like alt tabbing games on PC and never closing them.

Im working on "finishing" up Dead Cells, it's a good game, but doesn't scratch the "fun" itch in the same way as Isaac, Slay the Spire, Risk of Rain 2 and Spelunky. I think part of is because the biomes/zomes are so huge.

I know Dead Cells is a very popular and successfull roguelike, but I don't think Im ever gonna get it to click the same way the other games I mentioned does.

Imo, making a great roguelike that keeps being fun and addictive to play is really hard and so far only Isaac, Slay, Risk of Rain and Spelunky had managed it. Hades did it well, but the lack of boss variations kept it from becoming great. Dead Cells is great, but the biomes/zones are too huge and long and reduces the fun I have.

Hell, where I live the physical copies for some games can be cheaper than the digital Steam versions, especially for the particularly greedy pubs like Square.

I just bought an R3 physical copy of Diofield Chronicles off a local retailer for the equivalent of 48usd, and its nearly 60 bucks on Steam. Madness

I don't know about other countries, but in the US I can still rent games as well. I finished The Last of Us Part 1 a few days ago and there is absolutely no way I would have paid $70 for that.

as usual the choice is always yours in the same way the console experience wont really ever be for me ... despite me only really having the midrange PCs (and never was interested and wealthy enought for the highend) and been basically laptop gamer for last decade . (i find the rants about nvidia gpus hilarious in that regard)

What i enjoy the most on PCs is the choice , choice to play however the fuck i want .... be it text adventure from 80s, shitty console ports from early 00s , modern AAAs or just random artsy indies .... using whatever display and controls method i want

For me the console gaming just has too many limitations for stuff i am used to , to even consider . Yes its simpler and easier to coachplay ... but ultimately that kind of experience was never really my thing beyond party play or snugglecoop as "foreplay" .

There is also some weird and vocal part of gaming community (no matter if pc and console) that thinks the highend gpus are the en all be all of whole PC gaming and that current nvidia GPU prices will kill it for good. I guess some see the "zero punctuation meme" as a gospel-
Meanwhile here i am smiling in my little corner enjoying wider variety of games then ever before.

Then there are surbstiptions and lending .... but neither of them is really for me and its kinda against how i play and enjoy games. (i am still the weirdo that likes to collects stuff rahter then "rush through in time to return") . Especially the way subs work these days i know for certain that they would destroy me especialyl every month when they announce whats leaving .... as i know my obsessive-compulsiveness enough that i would be rushing to finih most of them every month to the point of it messing witm my actuall "ofline" life (thx god gamepass pc/Winstore is such a shitfest )

Most of the time, PC (harcore) players refer to free online, free cloud saves, mod, cheats etc. as why PC is superior, but a big reason why the average joe is moving to PC and stayes there is the game library.

The game library on PC is completely untouchable for consoles.

For me that is the one of main reasons I prefer PC over consoles, being able to play old or new games in the same device.

And modding, i had small-scale mods on CyberPunk 2077 really quickly after launch. Simple things like removing intro movies, a basic handling mod for vehicles, a different coloured HUD and things like that.

Not all modding is huge texture replacers and extra quests and characters.

Is this from the devs of the Room? Looking at the listed games for the dev on Steam, it doesn't seem like it. but if it looked a bit ceepier, it could literally be something from one of those games.
nope, not from them

The latest Metal Jesus Rocks video has some cool Steam Deck accesories. I might actually end up getting one of those docks and a protector skin.
Editing stuff in the Desktop mode side of things would definitely go a lot quicker with a mouse and keyboard lol.

Also random but I started playing some Ultra Kill.
The Aim Assist for controllers REALLY lets that game shine on Steam Deck.

Dropped a few hours into Taxinaut last night and walked away mighty impressed.

It's a solo effort that does what's on the tin. But with a surprising level of crunch added to the mix. Guess the dev has been working on the game for 6 years and it's been on itch.io for a while now.

Anyway, you can pick up passengers and ferry them to locations planetside or you can take them to other planets & systems. The map is staggeringly huge. But either way you need to know the destination location by either having been there already, buying map data from Information centers, chatting up fares for directions (cheaper), or sometimes the new fare just knows how to get there. Then you're off.

Surface travel can be quite hectic as there's a lot of air traffic that you need to avoid. Hitting other vehicles gives you an increasing fine (10, 100, 1000) and mood debuff, locational vehicle damage that affecting various control systems. Get dinged up enough and customers won't get in you're pos ride. If it gets bad enough you're forced to land and have to pay for a tow to the nearest garage. Controls feel kind of like that old Time Pilot arcade game and I'm assuming new vehicles & upgrades will fine-tune control & performance.

There's garage nodes where you can repair for a fee or you can head back to your home base (right now a rental apt. that you have to make 10-day payments on) for free repair, food, sleep & hygiene refreshment. All will affect vehicle performance and if a fare will ride with you. It's not a depleting meters or anything, but you do have a 24 clock running and it's a good idea to return home once a day to replenish and fast-forward time to the next day.

There's story bits that thread you through a tutorial of sorts and chatting up passengers can be quite witty.

All told, it feels like there's a LOT of meat on the bone here. Esp. coming from a one guy dev team. There's lots of subsystems I haven't described for brevity's sake. The dev make a Top 10 Quick Start tutorial vid that gives a more expansive overview of what to expect with the gameplay loops.

Great game. Great impulse price.
