Can we just not shame people for buying games on here?

I'd rather be seen buying Forspoken than Hogwarts, and frankly I'd rather not be seen buying either of them, but we shouldn't be giving people crap for their purchasing decisions whether that's kusoge, a game on EGS, one that funnels money to a transphobe, or all three of those.

Life's too short for the flame wars that emerge. Just judge people silently or take it off site.

The 21st century is already shameless enough as it, we could use bringing more shame back into the world

Yikes @ 68 metacritic for Forspoken.

On the flip side the price will tank and be very cheap sooner :coffee-blob:

AAA games have really fallen off in the industry. There is only a small handful of devs who have any business making big budget 70$ quality games these days. Everyone else needs to restructure and reevaluate their future.

Just let people buy whatever they want. Shaming other means you are no better than the creator...
Well, I wouldn’t go that far (shaming someone online is nothing compared to JKR’s vileness), but flame wars aren’t going to lead to anything positive.

JKR is human garbage and I implore everyone to avoid Hogwarts Legacy, but if you‘ve decided to buy it that’s your choice and I’m not interested in a flame war over it.

Absolutely not lmao. Sorry but anyone who believes shaming people for supporting problematic creators is in anywhere near the same ballpark as actively campaigning against the rights of minority groups is deluding themselves.

Like if ya’ll wanna give money to shitty people go for it. But don’t go acting all defensive when you get clowned on for doing so. Just shut up and play what you want instead of doing a ton of mental gymnastics that make you look like a performative asshole to justify buying a video game.

It's the "clowning" part I take issue with, because it's pure hypocrisy. The crux of the issue is people are mad that others don't care enough about this issue to join the boycott but everyone does this in general. We all ignore most issues in favor of 1 or 2 that we prop up as the most important ones. So no one's really in a position to be a dick to people for not caring enough because they bought a game or saw a movie.

And before someone tries to wipe this away with "whataboutism"...yeah, that's kinda the point. Not everyone agrees on any 1 issue being the most important one that they're going to go out of their way to do or not do things about. Everyone thinks their cause is the most righteous or most important, and this isn't me trying to say to not care about anything at all. The point is just don't be an ass to people about it.

That is a lesson that goes both ways in this topic lol. I'm not going to speak for anyone else but if someone came at me scolding me for buying something I'm not one to just take that quietly.. I make no excuses for whatever I buy and you're not gonna see me playing Twister trying to justify it. I buy things because I want them and have the means to do so.

so why do you care about the "clowning" then? 🤷‍♀️
as I said: do what you want, deal with the reaction.

Ew Vaush, we don't listen to fascists here. Look man I love you but you picked the worst fucking person to make a counterargument lol
I mostly just thought it was so timely as it popped up on YouTube right as I went from reading this thread.XD I do think its valid to boycott the game, but I do also think there isn't really ethical consumption under capitalism as the meme goes, I guess I'm both siding this.

As long as the game doesn't actually promote anti-whatever human rights/decency messaging I'm sure millions of people that don't even know of the controversy or have heard of it but haven't gone in detail/only care if the game itself promotes that, will be buying and having fun with it (if it's not a trainwreck). And that's okay, we''ve probably all bought products associated with horrible people/conditions before/after the fact came out. Anybody here praised Orwell as a great writer or anything? Maybe read about him and what was the primary motive/message/funding behind his works and adaptations, even if all the evil has come true from the side he was on, lol. I bet Harry Potter, if the IP lives on, will also grow to promote messages the creator is vehemently against.

The story does kinda focus on crushing the Goblin Rebellion. How that exactly plays out, we will see but uhh yea, it did kinda pick one of the ickiest themes of the Wizarding World, next to house elves, to depict.

Like I said it's the blatant hypocrisy that makes me roll my eyes. I mean feel free to clown away on people I guess but don't react bad when someone flips it back on you for "supporting" (I hate the use of that word here, as if buying a product means you endorse everything the creator believes in) something else that has a sucky creator or financier behind it. Because we all do that, and no not just with things that we need like smartphones or cars or whatever.

People can do whatever they want of course, I just dislike when arguments that address the problematic aspects of the franchise get drowned in 'well the game will still sell tons of copies so who gives a shit'. Well, the person explaining the issues gives a shit, and I can't help but to think how disheartening can be for them to have their concerns brushed aside.

I don't think people buying shit from bad people necessarily makes them racists or transphobes, but I do think that we should do better than 'the game will make money so please shut up about it', with the 'shut up' part heavily implied by the tones of the comments.

No clue what that's about, haven't read any potter and just watched a couple films I don't remember. I take it they're all racists against goblins just trying to live as something better than slaves/sewer dwellers or something?

Then how come you make an argument about 'well as long as the game is untainted from bad shit' when said bad shit is core for the franchise.

Because it's my thought on the matter and you're free t0 respond with something like "well the game does actually do this" for everyone in the forum participating in the discussion or not to also see rather than be a prick to me about it. Are you telling me to buy all the Potter books and read them before saying my piece about the general "creator is a biggot, what about buyers of products associated with their creations" topic?

alright, I don't have much beef with that. don't try to turn it into a decency argument next time then
