lol I didn't expect to wake up to moral panic about the insomniac leaks and a bunch of media outlets acting holier than thou about not reporting on it considering their stances on past hacks/leaks like the GTA one last year (or even the trailer leak recently) and Capcom ransomware attack...but here we are I guess.

Sony first party really does hit differently I guess :face-with-tears-of-joy:
Did the GTA leaks have a bunch of employees personal data plastered over it like the Insomniac one does? I think thats why they're avoiding talking about it.

It's obviously missing all the non-Steam games (Persona 5, Tokyo Necro, Witch of the Holy Night) I played this year, but good enough.
Luckily my Gamepass sub is running out next year, so at least that help keep things more Steam centric.

My parsnippu can't be this cute :cat-pizza-blob:
:wd_warren:

Sadly parsnip custom url was and still is taken. :minos_sad:

But actually these days it's the same @ as my twitter and discord are, so it's not an issue anymore. Not that it ever was an "issue".
And here I was thinking that picking a random vegetable as my username would always make it more or less easily available, but somehow someone else is always first. :toucan:

That one thread on the topic over on Era just filled me with rage. So many people acting so high and mighty over not spreading the stolen info, as if they protested anywhere near as much when Capcom was victimized in a completely identical fashion (down to the devs' personal info being compromised).

Don't share the devs' personal information, absolutely. Thats not newsworthy, and is harmful to the concerned individuals on a private level. But news relevant to the industry at large should be fair game.

Can't you just click the 'edit profile' button and change stuff there? Account/login name can't be changed (easily at least), but that's not visible to anyone but you and you should have no problem changing these 2 (or 3 if you want to change your custom url too) visible ones.

I tried changing the Profile name but that didn't seem to change it. Not tried any of the others. Maybe a restart would help as well.

Edit: I take that back, it was just slow updating. I was foolish for thinking it would be instant.

Someone else said it better than me: the games industry like their veil of secrecy because that way they can conceal shit business and labor practices from the public.

So then, obviously, don't talk about the personal data. Obviously. Even aside from that there is still a metric ton of interesting information and insight into an industry which is, IMO, far too opaque to begin with.

But the issue here is with the hypocrisy. No leak is ever intended. When it happens it is, at best, accidental and at worst, malicious. No developer ever likes it. The information in all other leaks is just as useful or useless as this one. And yet these same 'journalists' have no qualms about reporting on it and farming clicks. If some affected developer has the audacity to call them out on it they get on their high horse with a "Fuck you we're REAL journalists doing REAL journalism and we are not beholden to corporations" attitude. Different this time around though?

And here's the thing. All this information is spreading through reddit and Twitter anyway. Even other sites are talking about it. I think I saw a tweet from IGN about it as well. So this 'blackout' isn't going to achieve anything. It is entirely performative. It's worth taking a moment to consider who the performance is for...

And are they planning to pretend that the information isn't actually out there going forward? Are we going to see a "Surprise reveal of Marvel's X-Men game at State of Play 2028" headline from these sites in 5 years? If Sony decides to reboot Killzone tomorrow as a live service game are they going to have to pretend it's not because they're shit scared of losing Call of Duty money? Just perpetual denial of facts?

EDIT: Are any of the current set of game 'journalists' actually journalists? As in, went to school and studied journalism and have a formal education in how the profession is supposed to work? Or are they all just bloggers making up the rules depending on how they feel about things?

Is Astlibra as good as Dominic Tarason makes it out to be ?
I don't know who that is or how good exactly they make it out to be, but the answer is probably "yes" ;)

IMHO, it's really a "hidden gem" in the pure meaning of the word, but (as almost always in these cases) that needs to be qualified in that it is certainly not for everyone. It's obviously a passion project that basically a single developer worked on for many years, and that shows both in the positive and negative sense.

I wanted to write more about it when I finished it, but I see now (after a search) that I never really got around to it. In short, if you like 2D action RPGs and are not put off by uneven pacing, difficulty, or polish, then it is absolutely a must play. I think I read this somewhere else (maybe a Steam review?) but in many ways it really does feel like a game designed in ~ the PS1 era and somehow only released decades later.

It does have a demo so I suggest just giving that a try if you're unsure.

wow I didn't know MGS4 emulation improved that way.
I've been playing at solid 40-50fps with these canary patches on my anciend GTX1080 card with not many issue performance
I can see MGS4 on the next MGS collection, now.

I beat the game early this year besides some long-ass shader compilation and the game crashing on one of the mission briefs the game ran perfectly. RPCS3 is more dependent on the CPU. What CPU are you using?

RPCS3 is nuts and those guys must be leet-tier engineers.
I've replayed Skate 2 and 3 to completion a couple of times. Many games that for the longest time wouldn't even launch, now run pretty well (SSX, Shaun White's Skateboarding, that edgelord open world electro dude game whose title I don't recall, the ratchet and clank games,...)

Speaking of emulators, I -think- Viva Piñata TiP is now playable on Xenia. For a very long time the ground didn't render at all.

On an unrelated note: Line. I've now clocked 17 hours in Against the Storm, I also bought a copy for my GF and she's played maybe 20 hours. So yeah, I hate it. Thanks for the rec! WIth that said, one criticism I do have is that games are way too long (even though I'm constantly on 3x speed) and I fear that at some point it's going to feel a bit too repetitive because progress feels a bit too slow.

No but the capcom leak was the same as this it was a huge ransomware attack that had a lot of personal info in it as well as game leaks. No one really cared back then which I think was the sensible thing to do. Obviously they didn't post anything leading to that info but still covered the news as they should have.

Intel Core i7-6700K CPU @ 4.00GHz, is the one I've been using when I buid this old setup (good for that time xD).

Bloodborne with over 7 mill copies sold and still not even a PS5 patch.

what the fuck
I almost respect the level of hatred they have for that IP to ignore that much money.

Also shows how much these companies deepthroat Kojima. His game barely outsold until dawn despite no doubt costing 10x more than that game did to make and yet it's getting a sequel while that didn't and something like Days Gone, which is now approaching 10m sold between ps and pc sales, was thrown in the scrap heap too.

Either Sony signed a multi-game deal with Kojima or they treat Death Stranding like a prestige product.

If it’s the latter rather than the former, then I’d wish they bankrolled some other, better stuff for prestige. Stuff that might cost less to make and recoup more cash.

Those Ruturnal and Sackboy numbers aren't looking too hot either.
I think Returnal at least should be fine. Doing some quick math (TM) based on Housemarque's size during its development, the development period, and average gamedev burn rate, they shouldn't have spent more than 20 million on it, and if I read the chart right it had already generated 57 million in net sales in 2022.

They gave him the engine to make the game and got timed exclusivity for it. Same with sequel so they definitely have some multi deal.

Sony must be so pissed Kojima is doing the horror game for Xbox tho. They know how big PT was back in 2014 and now seeing him with Jordan Peele for OD must hurt lol. If the game blows up it will sting even more.

This hacked data just shows how hard Insomniac is carrying Sony this gen.

Ratchet + Miles Morales + Spider Man 2 + Wolverine.

And they are gonna carry them next gen too by the looks of it with Venom + X-men + Spider Man 3 + another Ratchet most likely.

The Spider Man sales are ridiculous.

Naughty Dog and Santa Monica can just chill n be absent for the next 6 years and PS would still be fine tbh.

The best 225 million Sony ever spent. But they really need to learn how to secure their servers :ROFLMAO:

Kind of interesting to note that the original PS4 release of Death Stranding did fine for Sony, but the director's cut didn't do jackshit.
In comparison to something like Ghost of Sashimi director's cut , they both released august -september 2021 timeframe and the data is from feb 2022.

Interesting.

On another note, does anyone here recommend Cyberpunk 2077? I held off at launch because the poor state of the game but now with the expansion out I'm second guessing myself.
I've only played after 2.0, and left it before finishing the campaign. Aside from the graphical quality it had an uninteresting story, and the gameplay didn't grab me at all, Systems that were supposedly enhanced web mediocre, like police chasing you, which seems worse that what's been available in GTA for decades. City navigation wasn't good either, with an overreliance of the navigator, it was difficult to orientate myself after hours of playing. For an open-world game, the Witcher 3 was much more enjoyable in all fronts

So they are starting Spider-Man 2 PC port around March next year with release before April 2025?.

That's also how I understand it, if FY for Sony means what I think it does. That would not even be two years after the initial console release.

If it's true it will probably be a year after consoles. And Spider-Man 3 looks like to be potentially day 1 release.

I mean if ~5 months is what's needed to port a game to PC yeah I guess the port could be ready by October 2024.

But it's still odd that we have not heard anything for Ghost of Tsushima or Demon's Souls. Those games could still do very decent numbers on PC.
Maybe announced after Horizon ?

I would also like to play TLOU Part II on PC as well. Strange it was not confirmed alongside the remaster.

I mean it's Insomniac engine that is ready for PC and probably requires very little modification at this time for PC ports. My bet is that Insomniac is probably developing PC version alongside console one with Nixxes then taking over for testing and polishing.

GoT is on Sucker Punch engine that was never used for PC version so it could be an issue. TLoU Part 2 is probably impacted a bit with sales of first one on PC and it is kinda too soon for release, it could potentially be summer release (Iron Galaxy is probably working on it because they are familiar with ND engine).

Why would IG be the lead dev on TLOU 2 PC ? It could very well be ND's second PC project with IG assisting with testing/QA.
Your timeline makes sense to me however, it could be announced in March and released in June/July. Usually there is a very short window between announcement and release for Sony PC ports.

Soooo..............

How are those "we don't report on the Insomniac leak" news outlets handle information about Sony and Insomniac going forward?
Do they just pretend to not know Information? Do they ignore news-worthy future stories that involve Insomniac leaks or do they censor those?
Do they vehemently deny something as the truth because it was obtained through a leak?
Do they just... not speculate what comes next for Insomniac, I mean speculation and rumors are like half of their business in gaming news.

At what point does this "stance" become impractical or even comical?

Spoiler alert: they will ride the good-guys PR for a few days or weeks and then ignore their stance.
