Well, after seeing this trailer I am very very hyped and might actually get it eventhough I wanted to wait for Horizon next week..

It's not getting particularly great reviews, and user reviews on Steam right now also don't seem so hot, so I'm not sure this will really live up to the original.

Speaking of Suikoden, how well do they hold up? Im thinking about playing them on my retro handheld
Replayed it last year.
Suikoden... is hilariously terrible. It plays like an early 80s game, barely any story, almost zero characterization, no level design, hell, the maps look like they come from the 80s too, of course the shitty pixel art should be fixed in the remaster, but you will still have some cities that are literally a cube map with three houses side by side and nothing else. Combat looks a lot better than the rest, but has zero depth and zero balance, which I guess is not the end of the world, but the game can still get grindy later on with the runes, so it's not particularly fun.
From my all of my replays, it was by far the worst of all the JRPGs.

Suikoden 2 is still pretty good, it's just better than what felt like a teenager's project on RPGMaker for 1...
It absolutely floored me that I liked the first game, but I remembered as "not as good as others" and... yeah, for good reasons. But hey, the second game is not bad at all and kept the good part of having all those characters to collect (though balance is still mega fucked) and the base building.

The Eiyuden Chronicle backer beta is out now.
I'm not going to play it (I never play any form of early access for RPGs), but I've read good impressions. It would be amazing if they really managed to pull off a quality Suikoden I/II -style game in 2024.
Im cautiously excited for it. Just watched the trailer for it, it both looks great but still didn't get a feel for how good it is actually be.
I have this and I played exactly 10min into it to see the opening and a bit into the first thing to know it REALLY is aiming for that Suikoden vibe. The sprites are just like my memory, super detailed for the time.

I played what is essentially the prologue, and so far it's pretty good. Haven't finished any Suikoden game, so I can't comment on how well it compares. On that front, I am hoping Konami drops the remaster of the first two games soon.
Speaking of Suikoden, how well do they hold up? Im thinking about playing them on my retro handheld
I also hope that Konami reamaster of the first 2 comes out soon. Suikoden 1 holds up better than a previous poster says IMO, but it is light and breezy. The MC is a blank slate and there's only tiny bits of character for each other party member because there's 108 of them. The game is short too which is actually good IMO.

Suikoden 2 is both much better than 1 story-wise even if the battle system is basically the same. The plot is better too and the more characters you remember from the first game the better the various reveals work in Suikoden 2.

I really love both games, but like everything from back then, you gotta be willing to put up with bullshit. There are random battles. And a LOT of them in some places. The boss difficulty can be horseshit if you aren't ready for it, etc. But they are absolutely classics IMO and well worth the time to replay if you're nostalgic or a fan of the era. I dunno how they would play to a modern gamer, but if you're of a certain age like me, they'll hit your

To be fair, the person that originally posted it never said that he died.

I don't really read to many post about people passing away. Is this typical the format that they are in? Word for word?

Because all I'm seeing is an imagine of Gabe and information about him.
Give the artist some love fellow weebs. :3

Missing Episode Aranea hurts the most.

Noctis and Luna at least got their alt ending in the book. Which I bought cuz I honestly kinda like XV's lore and I'm a NERD. :blobnerd:
"Game recognizes game" and also gives credit where credit is do.

I do like how in general the Steam account does mention who the artist are.

Also based off what that artist said, it looks like this is something that took a bit of time to plan, which would also explain the animations.

By the way on the Steam Deck the animation is a big different. The main difference being that the leaf petals that you are seeing on the screen, cover the whole screen and not just the banner. Which is pretty cool.

I do think it's cool how they still keep on using different artists each year for stuff. The main exception being the last few seasonal sales since they had the same artist do all of those.

I believe Valve even has a thing where you can buy the artworks that they commissioned.

Also it seems that people are interested in buying the Steam cat ear hat that the girl is wearing.

Okay, I've been playing a lot of Helldivers 2 lately and I need to talk how cool I find the live service part of this game.

The community gets what are called Major Orders which is a shared mission for everyone. The previous major order was related to defending a planet because the one of the enemy factions invaded which halted mech production. Once that major objective was completed the game instantly released mechs for everyone to use. I assume if we failed that objective then mechs wouldn't have been released for another few days or so.

The current major order has us working on activating termincide towers to basically eradicate an enemy faction from a planet. People have started coming up with theories on the effects that the major order will have on the game such as a mutation for an enemy or a boss fight being unlocked.

Around this time as well some players have had a rare encounter of flying bugs in the background or blue beams which is hinting towards a faction from Helldivers 1. Any mentions of these new enemies/factions have been outrightly denied by the CEO of Arrowhead in true roleplaying format. The community has been getting into roleplaying as well which is pretty cool.

I think that content drops or conent update hints that are weaved into the narrative is a cool little detail that makes this game's live service pop out a bit more from the rest.

Also it's a pretty fun game.

So PS5 Pro is supposed to have 3x as much teraflops compared to the current PS5?

Seems excessive and pricey. Like 700$ pricey.

Sony should do a swerve and just call it PS6.

This gen has been very forgettable so start a new one ASAP and push GTA6 with it.

They will pretty much kill off any Xbox effort in the future and get some type of quick jump on the Switch 2 as well.

I agree. I've been having a great time with it. The way sightings among a small percentage of the community are fueling rumors and the narrative is a great way to do it.

Am I going crazy or people are again delusional. They are cheering for PS5 Pro and claiming how PS5 is weak and not accepting that games are getting less and less optimized these days. All that will PS5 Pro bring is brute forcing performance while core issue of optimization will stay the same. When damn game has similar issues on PS5 and 4090 it's not power issue for the love of God. When game runs way better 6 months after release that is not damn power issue.

Yeah, that's a fairly standard sentence for for obits, just missing a key word. Three examples from the Washington Post Obituaries page:

David Mixner, champion of gay rights, dies at 77
Dan Wakefield, novelist, reporter and spiritual chronicler, dies at 91
Gerald M. Levin, Time Warner chief in AOL merger disaster, dies at 84
Definitely feels like someone was trying to get clicks/go viral.

So PS5 Pro is supposed to have 3x as much teraflops compared to the current PS5?
No, not really. It's more like a 1.5x or thereabouts. It's basically and "accounting trick" due to how modern GPUs are made. People should really stop using Flops to compare power. But I guess It's too late for that.

It's the same song and dance, the same thing will happen when the PS6 is announced

If the leaks are real, considering that it seems no CPU boost most games will not benefit THAT much in the performance front. Sure if sony's upscaling is decent they will look better.

Yea looks like the jump will be more like going from a 3060 to like a 3070 ti or 3080.

Not quite 3x. And not really worth it if you already have a PS5.

Still a decent machine if Sony can keep it at 600$ or under.

It will age poorly tho and proper support for it will go down the toilet once PS6 rumors start.

I'm not touching it but hopefully it pushes the base PS5 to lower prices for the holidays.

I said it a few weeks backs:

Either the PS5 isn't powerful enough to play current games and the PS5Pro is the wrong direction (a clear generational cut would be needed with a PS6)
Or the PS5 is just barely holding on and a PS5Pro is a needed midgen upgrade that completely negates any claim that the hardware cost for PC gaming is higher (You need to buy a 500-700 bucks console every 3-4 years unless you want subpar fps and visuals on your normal console)
Or the PS5 is enough for now and the games are just not optimized enough and Sony is just milking their customers with a PS5Pro

It has probably more to do with the constant race of visuals taking its toll, as is common with every gen since PS3.
If you want to keep making pretty games for tiktoks, you need the power.

Because the PS5 games are already running like complete garbage or look like garbage with the various image reconstruction methods.
Here Final Fantasy 16 and Rebirth are great examples, as soon as you actually play the game instead of the super optimized cut scenes for marketing, you choose your poison of games looking like smudgy last gen or running like arse.
No doubt we'll get a "the PC port is bad" for FF16 too, without questioning why the framerate of the PS5 version almost never reaches 60 with FSR fucking things up, or why it's a stutter fest if you accept a 30 lock... with drops.

People can love or hate Rockstar and they are sh*tty towards PC but what they can do with console hardware is amazing. GTA V on x360/PS3 and RDR2 on PS4/X1 are still one of the best achievements. They managed to render RDR2 in true 4K on X1X and with minimal pop-in. Then we get FF VII Rebirth with various lighting issues and pop-in galore at lower resolution and people are then screaming "we need PS5 Pro".

Yes the issue is an industry wide lack of optimization but unless someone can figure out how to reverse that the only option on the table is brute forcing through new hardware. I mean this is what PC has been doing for a while, port quality has never been worse on average than it is in the last 4-5 years but we keep getting astronomically higher jumps in gpu power that only barely offsets most of the issues.

Part of me would love to have a memory game with them considering how quickly people tend to forget things and at least with gaming stuff I am cursed with remembering every piece of useless information forever as it squeezes out things I actually need to remember lol.

Like yes ps3/360 gen was a nightmare for optimization but that was hardware related, devs were pushing those machines far harder than they could tolerate. That's not the reason why ps5/series x games are dipping down to like 720p or less in performance modes. You can't tell me ps5 was already maxed out in 2022.

That's... incredibly dramatized to the extent of simply not being true.

No, port quality is not that bad on average at all, and no, "astronomically higher" jumps in GPU power are not necessary to "barely offset" most of the issues.

None of that entire statement holds up to objective scrutiny. PC ports, on average, mostly perform where you expect them to relative to their performance on console, at the same settings. Which is the only comparison when talking specifically about ports that makes any sense.

The general quality of "optimization" independent of hardware platform -- as in, what you get out of a given piece of hardware in a game -- is a much more difficult topic to discuss, at least if you want to base your discussion on more than gut feelings. It's obviously true that games used to more efficiently utilize very limited resources, which is also true for basically all other software.
But you can't just look at that in isolation, go "so here's the issue, just program better taps forehead", and think you actually did anything meaningful. The reason that software is becoming less efficient in the absolute sense is that it needs to do much more, and juggle a lot more complex and moving parts. There's always a tradeoff between utility, productivity, portability and performance, and when you are building increasingly complex systems with roughly the same or even shrinking resources (look at the number of core engine programmers in most game teams; total development team size might be growing, but not there) then you need to prioritize.

Black Parade and Dark Mod are fantastic thief games.
Thanks again for having reminded me of the existence of the Dark Mod.

I didn't take to it previously, mostly because the tutorial is meh and incomplete, and the two official missions are... not bad, but very short. I wrongfully assumed that the official missions were among the best and didn't look much further. I also had middling performance with the version I tested, a "few" years back.

However, this time I started the William Steele series of missions -- I finished the first two, and OMG are they good !!

They are large maps, very intricate and very dense, full of secrets, gorgeously crafted with a fantastic attention to detail. They would not be out of place in Thief 2, and evoke the same feelings.

Case in point, after several hours of methodical exploration, I just finished a mission, very pleased with myself for all the secrets I uncovered, only to find that -- in classic Thief fashion -- I somehow only found HALF the loot.

This is outrageous and I'm pleased as punch. :)

It's quite amusing how fast the narrative about console power and image quality changes.
Just a few months ago console fans tried to tell you how awesome the PS5 is and the untapped potential and "that we had not seen the ceiling yet"
How it is enough.
How it doesn't have stutter problems or bad ports like PC gaming.

Suddenly, the PS5Pro is "needed" and "now people can finally play the newest games (more?) smoothly".

So they still have their original game that has been in early access for 11 years (one of the original Greenlight games on steam, yes the program that doesn't exist anymore))

So they're now starting another early access title and they're saying it's going to take them 6-12 months to finish the game to launch out of early access

Seems to be about 3080 level AT MOST. But PSfans are saying it's closer to 4xxx generation. I don't see how that is possible with how far behind AMD hardware is...

It's still the same CPU too right? Just an upclock?

At least you can trade in the ps5 and get like 300 back for it, makes the price tag easier to handle.

Besides the 2 systems combined don't even match what 4080s go for (assuming pro will be $500 again). And that's just for the gpu....

Spoiler Alert:
99% of PC gamers don't buy >1000 buck cards. (and the pro is on a 3080 to 4070 level with the rumored specs)

And trade-ins are mostly an American thing. At least in Germany there are not many shops who even do trade-ins (Gamestops isn't big in Germany, they have 70! shops for a population of 80 million.
And you can't do cash trade-ins. On a quick glance you can get a PS5 slim for 150-200€ if you trade in your old PS5, (that's just getting the same console) and it has so many conditions (faultless, all cables, controller, no scratches, etc.) that you probably won't get the max trade-in (or even can do the trade, couldn't find if they just up the price or don't take the old console)
That's not a PS5Pro trade-in, that's just the slim.
