I tried to get into Fallout 1 once again, and I had some fun so far. But the lack of tooltips and tutorials is extremely annoying. For example, I had to plant a microphone in the office of a certain criminal boss. I spent 15 minutes clicking on everything in the office to plant the microphone, but nothing worked. Turned out I had to use the "steal" skill on that boss and drag the microphone from my inventory to his. Is this really how we played and enjoyed gaming in the 90's? 😁
Im playing Chrono Trigger on my commutes and Im stuck, I have no idea where to go or what to do since it has no quest book or anything.XD

I've been playing Fallout 76 after the show as well and I am genuinely surprised how much I've enjoyed it. I never intended to play the game, even after the show, but I kept reading online about how the game was really good now, and how many people were going back to it and how nice the community is, so I thought I'd give it another chance. I've put in something like 135 hours in the game since then.

I'm not a fan of the Bethesda era Fallout games. Didn't like 3 or 4 and NV was so buggy at launch that it was also not a great experience. However, that was 10 or more years ago. What I have come to realize in that time is that Bethesda no longer makes the games that they used to and that I used to want from them (RPGs like Morrowind). So you won't get games with deep, branching storylines, meaningful choices with consequences and multiple ways to solve quests from them. What you get instead are first person, open world adventure games with light RPG elements, unmatched exploration, decent ancillary storytelling, the freedom to do whatever you want in the game and, nowadays, a very robust base building component. I think it's very important to set correct expectations for games coming from this studio. Judge them for what they are and what they're trying to be rather than what you hoped they would be. And Fallout 76 excels at what it is trying to be.

The other major problem I've had with the newer Fallout games is that I just don't like the dull, dreary and depressing settings of the games. I'm not saying they're doing anything wrong... it's a post apocalyptic setting so that's exactly what it was meant to be. It's just that I didn't really enjoy spending 50-100 hours or more playing in the same dreary urban wasteland with no colours except grey and brown (and those awful monochrome filters in F3 and FNV). I understand that it's meant to look bad, it's meant to be a ruined civilization but, for me, it's just not fun to play in that kind of world for an extended period of time. Fallout 76 fixes this as well by being set in the Appalachian Forest. Large parts of the map are filled with pleasant looking trees with autumn colours. Wandering around this game world, which is the main point of game for me, is far more pleasant than any of the older games. There are still many places with the same urban decay and in fact, several different biomes on the map, but there's a large part of the map that just feels nice to play in.

If you remember, the game initially shipped without any human NPCs. All the quests were delivered by robots and recordings. They got trashed for that design choice and a couple of years later shipped a huge update which added NPCs to the game. That update also added a whole new set of main and side quests. They actually ship about one major update a year which adds a new area or expands the current map (which is massive) and each of these updates adds main and side quests. So the game has now has multiple main and side quest chains and it is entirely possible to do them out of order depending on what place you stumble upon in your adventures. This is not a bad thing because ultimately the quests are designed to send you in every direction on the map to explore anyway. It can however be jarring to go back and forth from taking quests from NPCs and taking them from voice recordings, because they never went back to modify the original quests to add NPCs there. That being said, now that I have finished a majority of the quests in the game, I can safely say that the final quests of the original main quest series are better than anything that they've shipped since. And it got me thinking about how, aside from the 'immersion' factor, there is no functional difference between taking a quest from a voice recording as opposed to a human NPC. A good quest from a voice recording is a better game experience than a bad quest from a human NPC.

Anyway the game is really fun to play if you enjoy exploring the world. The map is huge with lots of places to find. You can be wandering around in the forest and come across a set of log cabins and there's a story about the fate of the people who lived there. Or you're in the city and you go to some commercial building and learn about how the company tried to take advantage of people before the nukes went off. How an actress who was preparing for the role of a life time dealt with the great war. Like every Bethesda games, there are vignettes waiting to be discovered in any direction you walk in and if you take the time to absorb the story being presented. If you enjoy that aspect of Bethesda games, then this one does it really well.

The game isn't flawless though. Being always online means the mod scene is next to non existent. There's a live service layer with a battle pass (which I ignore) and events happening every 20 minutes. An event is a group activity with other players in the server where you teleport to a location and do basic quests (defend a point, escort a thing, kill a boss etc.). This can also be ignored but they do give items and currencies that are useful at the 'endgame' where you are trying to modify stats on your weapons and armor. If you enjoy the base building aspect of the game then it is greatly expanded since Fallout 4 but it is also one of their primary vectors for monetization because they sell an absolute ton of decorations and utilities that you can use to make your base more aesthetically appealing or just useful. And the biggest problem (which you don't actually encounter until maybe 50 hours have passed) is that inventory space is very limited. This is a problem that is easily solved with mods in their other games but here you will constantly end playing inventory tetris and it becomes tiresome after a while. But would you believe it, they have an optional monthly subscription of about $12 or so and if you buy in to that, you suddenly get nearly unlimited stash space along with several other quality of life benefits. Classic case of creating a problem and selling the solution. The debate on whether this is pay to win or not is endless in the community.

TLDR: Fallout 76 is a surprisingly fun game if you enjoy playing the kind of game Bethesda Game Studio makes. If you tried the game years ago and bounced off it, I think it's worth giving it another shot now.
This was a really fun read.

Thanks for taking the time.

Try playing Romancing Saga: Minstrel's Song from Square (remake of an old SNES title). The game essentially does not feature a main quest, instead you pick a main character to start from, you get a short prologue that details the backstory of that character and then you are expected to pick up quests and find something to do. Also, there's no levels, you level up by doing stuff, you can pick arbitrary skills to create whatever kind of character you want and the game expects you to understand how do well in combat.

A pretty extreme case of non holding the players hands, plus absolute freedom in, well, anything. From mechanics to "story"

I do value freedom and that does sound interesting! But with Chrono Trigger, there isnt much to do except the main quest. At least I assume as it seems.

For people that like JRPGs that let the player do things in any order, I will recommend Live a Live, it's more consensual in its stat progression and you can't soft lock yourself like with the poor scaling of SaGa games:

It's a great game, not too long either.
And there's rumours of a sequel brewing too...

In the 90s it was more like "read the manual first" and "then read the strategy guide" ;)
I kinda miss that.

Reading the manual and theorycrafting while the game was installing (or, gasp, during school) was part of the fun. I remember avidly reading the manual for Morrowind --- as a result of which process I went with an Altmer and thus died immediately, miserably, and repeatedly in the very first cave. Good times. Caesar 3. Empire Earth.... Some of those manuals were even quite well-written and fun to read on their own merits.

I much prefer a separate manual to a game that interrupts you every 30s for 2h with modal popups like "press X to breathe" and "press A to attack" and "if your HP reaches 0 you die".

And then that game usually manages to also have a popup of the style "when the zygotes glow red you can perform a differential takedown by integrating over the enemy's attack curve (but only when backturned stance is active); press X+Y+<button not bound> while dancing slightly to the left to execute, or Y+A+<button not bound> to gain purple zygote", after which the game autosaves, and you never ever ever get another explanation of that mechanic unless you restart the 20min tutorial.

Midori soft confirming the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster.

I mean they just released 2 big budget FF games in the last 12 months..and they kinda flopped too lol.

Also they have mmorpg expansion soon.

People shouldn't be expecting anything new for a while. The last thing Square needs to do is oversaturate the market with more remakes and spinoffs. Let it all breath and polish up the mutliplat performances. And release them when they are ready.

My guess is they aren't releasing any new DQ/FF games until Switch 2 is out and sold a dozen million units or so first.

Maybe the new DQ3R is late this year but I feel like they push it to early next year.

Btw, I'm once again using Games Recap to keep abreast of all the non-E3 summer stuff. It's very handy.

Right now I'm just getting a black site though, maybe their servers are having issues. It's been a great recap site for all the previous summers so I hope they figure it out.

apparently some Microsoft 1st party game is gonna get shadowdropped at their showcase

it's kinda sad that my first thought on seeing that was that whatever game it is is probably gonna have underwhelming sales due to the lack of marketing and whatever studio made it will get shut down

Mt. Whatever

As PlayStation VR2 was built specifically for PlayStation 5, some key features such as HDR, headset feedback, eye tracking, adaptive triggers, and haptic feedback (other than rumble), are not available when playing on PC.
Goofs. Have to buy the headset, plus an adapter, for a gimped headset?

Midori soft confirming the Final Fantasy Tactics remaster.
When will Square learn that they can only be saved by a faithful Turn-based Final Fantasy 8 Remake?

Look at FF16 and their action combat, or at FF7 and their Frankenstein action TB combat. They bombed.

Only turn-based FF8 remake can bring salvation.

It can't be Avowed or Indiana. That would be too crazy even for Xbox.

I don't see it being some new Gears thing either as that would have multiplayer modes and would cause chaos of all kinds. Remember MCC at launch was terrible. I think Gears collection would benefit from some type of beta testing first. Unless they only drop some campaigns.

So it has to be Towerborne. They showed off a good chunk of that game last year so it may be ready to go.

That RTS game they showcased earlier this year could be a good choice too.

Steam was officially blocked in Vietnam due to Valve not complying with local laws. From what I've read, it's a fairly rigorous process to publish games in Vietnam and the country is such a small part of the overall userbase that I doubt Valve will bother and Vietnamese users will simply have to VPN it up.
Yeah... that's impossible to implement

In addition to classification based on the interaction between players and between players and the game server, online video games have also been classified subject to the players' ages and game contents:

  • video games suited for adults (ie, aged 18 and up) are games that have armed combat, but have no pornographic acts, sounds or images;
  • video games suited for teenagers (aged 12 and up) are armed combat games without graphic images of weaponry, pornographic acts, images or graphic or close-up attention to sensitive parts of the human body and with restricted or mitigated weapon impact sound; and
  • video games suited for everyone (marked as 0+) are animated cartoon games without armed combat, ghostly, horrible or violent images, sounds, acts, images, sounds or graphic or close-up attention to the sensitive parts of the human body.
G1 games are strictly governed by the current laws of Vietnam. Accordingly, the G1 game publisher is obligated to obtain:

  • a decision to approve game contents; and
  • a licence to provide game services issued by the Ministry of Information and Communications (MIC).
To be granted these licences, the publisher:

  • must have sufficient financial ability; and
  • satisfy several technical and human resources requirements.
In addition, the game contents:

  • must not violate prohibitions under laws; and
  • not include images or sounds that:
    • cause fear and horror;
    • incite violence, animalism;
    • are vulgar, provocative, lewd, depraved, immoral, contrary to the nation's moral, cultural and fine traditions;
    • distort or destroy historical traditions; or
    • depict suicide, drug use, drinking, smoking, terrorism, child abuse, abuse, trafficking or other harmful or prohibited acts.
Furthermore, the G1 game publisher must comply with other regulations on the G1 game publisher's obligations, such as:

  • displaying the game's age classification in the upper left corner of the advertising frame and device screen while the player is using the video game services;
  • setting up at least one server in Vietnam for saving the player's required information;
  • establishing a website that displays information required by laws; and
  • applying measures specified by laws to minimise the negative impacts of games on players (particularly by ensuring that the payment system of video games is located in Vietnam and connected with the Vietnamese payment service providers).
The G2, G3, and G4 games publisher must register with the Department of Radio, Television and Electronic Information under the MIC before publishing these games.

Under the current laws of Vietnam, only the companies incorporated in Vietnam and registered as an online video game service are allowed to provide the services related to online video games. In addition, foreign investors are required to set up a joint venture with a Vietnamese partner licensed for the provision of game services if they intend to invest in the industry.
It's just protectionist (corruption) lawmaking to "boost" local companies. Like the internet laws in South Korea or the gaming laws in China.

Thing is, Vietnam is a small market and Valve can't just provide licenses to 50.000 games to local companies in Vietnam. (Or try to maneuver the minefield of special regulations in regard to drugs, violence, prono, horror, vulgar, depraved, "wrong" historical traditions, etc. etc.)

No humble leaks for this month?

There are rumors of Octopath 2 coming to gamepass this month so I wonder if Square maybe dumps the first or both on Choice today.

Would be nice if they did because I really want them for Deck and not gamepass.

Monster Hunter seems like good candidate for choice too.

But this being summer seal month I am expecting it to be weak.

This was a bit mysterious last month, since you had reports from users on Reddit and other places that mentioned they can no longer access Steam, but no official word from the government. Looks like it really was due to the government banning Steam.
Those rules are absolutely insane to me. Imagine needing a "book license" in order to be able to write and sell each and every book you wrote. Just goes to show how important freedom of expression (with sensible carve-outs for hate speech) is for a society

It comes across as shooting you self in the foot. So you try to force a protectionist policy. In doing so you shutdown the biggest PC market in the country effectively fucking over what you were trying to protect.

so good job there.
