I fear if Sony gets From Software it'll just be the usual playbook when something is so beloved:

"Of course we won't make any changes and be super hands off with the game dev side, we love what Miyazaki and his teams are doing, we aren't that stupid" while making ambitious sales projections and then when those targets aren't hit and the pressure of trying to hit them has done the damage Sony will be forced into action because numbers have to go up.

While I already posted this link in the EGS thread about Alan Wake 2's sales, I was just going to point out Control 2 is supposed to be an an action RPG. I know the first game dipped their toes into it (to its detriment IMO), but if they fully commit to the concept it could be cool. Assuming Control 2 releases on Steam day 1
Does the last part mean they will fix the mess of the content on all the versiond on Steam? (The humble bundle ones)

Hopefully it also means that the unofficially-developed HDR patch by one of their devs is also integrated, but I'm not holding my breath

At least on PC, installing the mod is super easy, so not super important. That said, if work on Control 2 ever really starts, I could see them going back to Control 1 and backport some technical improvements to the older title.

Steam Controller 2 with a dock/charger combo will practically be the GOAT. It's not like changing batteries were such a chore in the old one, but the terminals/clips that holds the batteries were stiff enough to disagree with my fingers. :flare_sleepy:
This is something I actually noticed changing over the production run of the Steam controller.

I bought one at launch and 2 more when they were selling them off (so at the very start and end), and the most noticeable change was to the battery clip mechanism. The one on the launch controller was almost unusable without extra tools for some types of batteries. The newer ones were much better, although still quite stiff and not ideal.

They're not dumb enough to sabotage the pc numbers of From games.
They're dumb enough to port everything and the kitchen sink to PC except Bloodborne. [hey, the forum lets me use formatting again, how nice of it].

They're dumb enough to remake Demon's Souls from scratch, with every opportunity for cross-platform dev, and make it PS exclusive. And keep it exclusive, for four years and counting.

They're dumb enough to throw millions of $ in sales to the trash with PSN account requirements that exclude 121 countries --- and generate un-quantifiable amounts of ill-will --- for the sake of making an irrelevant number go up in reports.

They're dumb enough.

I hope it has the same overall shape -- or something even better that's also "weird". If "weird" means "different from the norm".

There are already tons of controllers that feel exactly the same, with extremely minor differences in things like button or stick shape and travel.
The Steam controller -- when held correctly, rather than trying to hold it like you would hold a differently shaped controller -- is the only controller with 2 shoulder buttons on each side ever made where it feels natural and comfortable for me to hold it in a way that allows me to actuate all its controls without changing my grip.
Ehhh to each his own, it felt terrible for me although I liked the general concept behind it and the features it offered, the deck feels great to hold compared to the switch though
The fact that other manufacturers are entering the licensed steam controller market at least ensures that even if new valve product isn't for me I'll still find something with a similar feature set but different shape that is conformtable to hold.

I think the whole point of Steam Input, is that there is no need for "licensed Steam controllers". It's a gimmick. Every controller works with Steam and you have the absolute freedom to use what you like as long as you can somehow connect it your PC.

yes but I liked the back buttons and the touchpads, which no other controller replicated so far, even the new licensed steam controller lacks the pads, those are the extra features I was referring to.
Even if not licensed, if the product takes off manufacturers might want to replicate it, either by officially licensing it or not.

edit: i meant the new licensed steam controller

Back buttons have gotten more popular. The Xbox Elite controller has them, The Sony Elite one (I think thats the name) also has them, even if only two.

I understand your point about touchpads, I have not see any third party go for that. I think only Valve see the benefit of that, though of course you also need that software support in form of Steam Input to make it work.

I started playing Assassin's Creed Origins and this return to the series made me emotional. I remember how big the leap was between AC1 and AC2, and how AC2 totally consumed me when I got off school. This title intro of AC2 burnt in my head forever. People shit on Ubisoft a lot but their open world games were huge back in the days and I enjoyed every second of them.

Btw, Origins is a gorgeous game. The opening hours also left good impressions. I am enjoying it a lot.

yes, but the problem with those is that you can't address them via the input configurator as separate buttons, they can only duplicate buttons that are already on the pad (plus you have to fuck around with external software or button combos to remap those)

and you can't remap them on a per game basis either, obviously

Regardless of how I held the original Steam controller, I could never comfortably use all the buttons. If I held it in a way that made sense for bumpers and triggers, the back buttons would be awkward and vice verca.

As for Kadokawa, lots of different outcomes feel possible.

The Sony Elite can be remapped using Steam Input. I know, since I use one. Not sure if the Xbox one is also supported like that.

Judging by what I've seen so far Stalker 2 is a complete broken technical mess but it's still getting good-ish scores??? I'm really confused...
It feels like one of those cases where if you liked the original you'll like the sequel, bugs and all, but still... it's been 15 years, certain things shouldn't be as easily brushed aside as they were back then, even putting in perspective the absolute nightmare that the devs must've went through these past few years.

Good game marred by tech issues is better than bad game that runs perfectly. At least you can brute force or expect patches (and even fan patches on the off chance the devs somehow leave it at a sorry state, look at what the community achieved) for some stuff. Don't see what the 15 years have to do with anything, we had plenty polished games during the original game's release too, without the nightmare you speak of that is very real and present in comparison...

Saying people are happy this is buggy is silly, they're happy there's a good and still unique in style and scope game to enjoy despite issues and it's more things like the game's complexity that guarantee bugs rather than the circumstances of its development. Even Bethesda games that also have big open worlds have endless patch changelogs as well, as did the likes of Witcher 2 and 3 and yes that included broken quest lines and such, if you had a smoother experience with them than any STALKER, it was probably just the softer/less clunky mainstream game design or playing post-patch, rather than the amount or severity of bugs.

Anyway, have to wait for the next upgrade/build to play this among a few other games, I can't hold 30 fps even with everything on low. The prologue was cool.

The game was always going to be treated with kid gloves because of the circumstances under which it has been developed. From what I've seen, almost all the reviews acknowledge the bugs and technical issues but only about half of them penalize the game for it. The others sort of handwave the issues away because game development is hard and this one had it harder than most. I think it was the high rating Gamespot review where the reviewer said that (paraphrased) he was willing to overlook the problems because at least the game wasn't crashing all the time. That's the benchmark in play here... the problems were acceptable because they didn't always cause a crash.

As usual, it's better to check your favorite Youtuber or live streamer and see the game for yourself. I watched the ACG review and it seemed like a fair, if somewhat verbose assessment of the game. I don't usually watch his videos so maybe that's just his style. Another Youtube guy called Shirakko gaming called it the most broken game since Cyberpunk 2077 in a tweet I saw. I then went to check some live Twitch streams and it does seem like performance is very uneven. The thing that stuck out the most to me is that the A-Life system seems extremely shallow. Kind of reminds me of Simcity 2013 where the simulation was very fake. Other than that there were quest and audio bugs that streamers were running into.

I think the consensus is to wait a while longer for patches to fix some of the major problems and maybe smooth out the rougher edges of the game for a better experience.

The Steam forums are full of people who are, seemingly, happy that the game is buggy and broken because that's how the older games were back in the day so that's how this one should be as well. This comes one day after the Flight Sim 2024 release shitshow where people in the Steam forums for that game were begging others not to give negative reviews because "You're going to play the game for the next 5 years so how does it matter if it's broken on day one?". I've always believed that I'm willing to tolerate some level of jank in a game if the tradeoff is that the game has ambition but now I'm starting to wonder if we're all just collectively lowering our standards too much. If a game you paid for doesn't even start on launch day or if your critical path main quest is completely broken by a bug 20 minutes into the experience then I think they've pushed it too far. Feeling a little stupid for pre-ordering both these games.

But why? What are you trying to achieve?
I'm just trying to set up games correctly without major stutters. I wish to play in 4k as I invested in an OLED display, and while I know that I'm somewhat limited by my VRAM (4070 Super, 12GB), sometimes it's a bit frustrating that different games need different tweaks here and there.

I see, thanks for explaining. My advice would be: Unless you enjoy the process of tweaking, drop your settings to high or medium or whatever and just play the game. Nowadays the differences between various quality levels are usually subtle and the process of tweaking is not worth the hassle if you just want to play. You can see it in Digital Foundry videos, Alex Battaglia does recommended settings guides and 9 out of 10 times the guide boils down to "don't use ultra settings".

I started getting interested in baseball again recently after watching the World Series, so I bought Pro Yakyuu Spirits 2024 on Steam today. Its been a while since I've played a baseball video game, and MLB The Show on console always seemed kind of generic..

I watched the trailer on Steam, and goddamn! That was crazy, the at bats almost looked like footage!

That's pretty much what I have been doing, but there's still things that need fixing here and there.

Take for example, HDR. Windows 11 AutoHDR looks like ass on my computer, and on certain games (REngine games for example), the HDR breaks completely if AutoHDR is activated. So it's an extra reboot you gotta do just to make the game behave correctly. I have been trying to set up RTX HDR, but honestly I'm confused about it. Supposedly, it should work like AutoHDR where it only kicks in if the content is in SDR, but on the Nvidia overlay it shows up as working despite having the game's HDR native support turned on. And I guess this is a 'me' problem, but when I see stuff like that (things not working how they're supposed to) it just bugs me forever :sweaty-blob:.

I also have been playing REmake for the past month and it has worked with no issues, but then I did some changes to the Nvidia control panel and it stopped working until I reversed some settings. I know it's a somewhat old game but it's kind of frustrating that there's no 'one and done' option.

So, in some regards, I find some comfort in console gaming in that whatever is in front of me is final and if you don't like it, well, it is what it is and there's nothing you can do to fix it.
