We just finished a successful twenty-first season of the Backlog Blitz. We've reached another calendar year! And I'm sure this one will be a super smooth year with no problems in the world or anything. Thank goodness we have games to distract us! I didn't really feel the normal heavy drop of holiday releases this year but I do dread this coming quarter as there's a lot of games coming in February. Are you one of the select few (if there's more than one?) that has now completed over 100 Blitz games? I didn't take the time to look through and check but I know I'm in that select club. Are you? And with 21 seasons completed and moving into 22 we can now do our own rodeo song or play with props that Drew Carey hasn't even dreamed of since we've bypassed Whose Line Is It Anyway? in number of seasons. Take that, Four Eyes!

We had 9 participants, which is the lowest I think there's ever been? Hopefully not a sign of things to come and it's just a holiday lull! There were 43 game goals set (-23 change) and 36 of them were completed (-11 change). Congrats on clearing out those backlogs! The rate of completion was high so I guess that means we've got some dedicated Blitzers sticking around. Congrats! For those of us that keep taking part, there are more games to complete! Congrats to kio for winning the raffle. Make sure to give them congrats for clearing that backlog and winning. kio got the win for completing Escape From Mystwood Mansion. A quick look shows a first-person puzzle game thing that describes itself as an escape room? Looks like it should go into my backlog!

It's a new year and this gaming year already looks like it's going to have some real heavy hitters. This first quarter brings the delayed Assassin's Creed, a big new Monster Hunter that will suck up infinite hours from players, Kingdom Come Deliverance 2 which I'm sure will be huge, Civilization VII which never ends, and most importantly that weird Like a Dragon pirate game. Good luck to everyone since February games will require like 500 hours minimum to complete. And that's just one month's big releases!

The spreadsheet has been updated, the prize pool has been reset. We'll start with $20.00 but chipping in is always welcome. The details to do so will be posted separately within the thread soon after we get started.

Pick your games accordingly!

What it is:

It's a simple way to clear out some backlog games. You select a number of specific games you want to complete and if you complete them in a set time frame you have a chance to pick a game of your choice within the prize limits.

Rules:

First off, there is no time limit on when you can join. If you come in late and only have a month left please feel free to join. Even one completed game will get you entered into the raffle detailed below.

Everyone shares the same rules so an agreed amount of time would be set (three months this time) and then a set amount of games you want to complete in that time (been using five games). You then pick your specific five games with the intention that you don't go changing it all the time. The idea isn't that once you beat some game you go and list it and mark it complete. Instead, you pick five games to complete at the start of the Blitz and ideally you complete them as well as anything else you want to finish in that time.

Prize:

In the end, I suggest a prize pool and a simple raffle done. I always chip in $20 to start it and accept any other additions. Raffle winners must use at least half but can go up to the full price of a game (capped at $60 if the prize pool gets large enough). Leftover goes to the next drawn winner until it gets down to $0 (or close enough at which point I'll just add it to the next Blitz).

Thoughts?

There's no entry fee or anything so there's really no loss for taking part or starting it and then ignoring it. It's just a fun way to clear out backlog games and have discussion about what you're completing. And commiserate if you pick a game you don't enjoy and sour one of your spots on your list.

I created the Google Sheet so feel free to add yourself and games:

I didn't participate in last year's Blitz - mostly due me just being lazy to put together a list each time & having to provide updates.

Anyway, plan on continuing this again.
  1. Lies of P - Completed
  2. Final Fantasy 7: Rebirth
  3. Majima's Pirate Adventure
  4. Dungeons of Hinterberg - Completed
  5. Thronefall - Completed

Happy New Year and thanks for hosting as usual Wibblewozzer
The last Blitz I joined was an abject failure where I don't think I finished a single game, so I plan on doing this one justice.

  1. Umineko When They Cry - Answers Arc (I already started reading Episode 5)
  2. Slitterhead
  3. Star Wars: Dark Forces Remaster
  4. DOOM Eternal
  5. Citizen Sleeper

  5. Lust from Beyond

My list.
Tunic
Tactical Breach Wizards
Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy
Tinykin
Dishonored 2

Something for everybody!
Actually it's just for me, but it's a fairly varied list I'd say. I just grabbed Tunic and Breach Wizards before sales end and plan to put some time in Breach Wizards before I do any GOTY voting, so that's going to be the first game that I start as soon as I'm finished with Lorelei and the Laser Eyes.

I may very well enter for the first time ! Just a matter of selecting the five games.

Just a question I feel I already know the answer of, what stops you from selecting 5 super shorts games ?
I also didn’t catch on how the prize works, but I’m honestly not here for that.

Edit
In a bizarre turn of events, I have issues choosing only five games, me, the one who can't decide on what to play for days. Turns out I have a lot of mid length games that I want to play, which I suppose are the perfect games for a blitz.

At the beginning of every year I put together a goal list of 50 backlog games that I pick my 20 Blitz games through the year from as well as usually work on more outside the Blitz. This year there's only five categories the 50 games are set in instead of the usual 6-8 so I'll pick one from each category for each Blitz this year. Categories will be included with the games below for those curious.

My five!

  • Demon's Souls (Remake) (From Software) - Never played any of the From games for more than like an hour (including the original Demon's Souls) and it's been a big missing spot for me. With streaming, I've had many ask me to play them so I figured I'd finally do it in 2025. I'm already a few bosses down after starting yesterday.
  • Cyberpunk 2077 (Games of the Year, mininum 10 awards) - Another big game that I never started. I just realized now I mentally kind of wish I finished the Witcher III DLC first so I might (but probably not) try to prioritize those first.
  • Volume (Heist) - A Mike Bithell game. Always been a bit curious what this is all about.
  • Stray Gods (Female Protagonist) - I love musicals and I've heard this is pretty solid
  • Loddlenaut (Overwhelmingly Positive) - I honestly don't know much about it but I always hear big praise.

I may very well enter for the first time ! Just a matter of selecting the five games.

Just a question I feel I already know the answer of, what stops you from selecting 5 super shorts games ?

Nothing stops you from picking five super short games. For that matter, you could pick five super long games or games that have no ending like Fortnite and make them complete and I'll accept that, too. It's purely an honor system. Ultimately the idea should be to pick games you want to complete from your backlog (or future backlog!) and have this as incentive to get through them. For many people the hardest part is just starting backlog games so this gives that push. If they're all one hour games then that's fine.

List done. Feels strange, it's a good way to put your foot down to play some backlog but at the same time I'm all about the moment, not sure I will finish it. Or maybe I will need 5 more slots. It's quite novel to me, we will see.

One Blitz game complete: Demon's Souls (2020)

I finally did it, I played and completed one of the big From Software games. I have been sullied. Was a good time. Farming for the Pure Bladestone for the dex weapon build was complete bullshit (roughly 3 of my 22.5 hours). But ultimately had a rather good time, was surprised that it was easier than I had expected, and I look forward to playing others in the series now. But they need to wait for me to finish some other games first. But soon enough I'll start Dark Souls.

Final Fantasy III done, played it on the Deck and it was fun, still a bit on the simpler side but the jobs mechanic kept it fresh and it's not too long. I remember getting stuck on this game as a kid so I can finally cross it out.

Last night and today I finished two more.

Stray Gods - Decent enough, roughly a 7 out of 10. Writing and music could be a bit all over the place but characters and larger story were interesting and for a musical it was better than I honestly expected. I thought they'd have some really amateur-ish songs but largely decent besides the rapid tone and style shifts.

Loddlenaut - Like a 5-6 out of 10. Was surprised how disappointed I was wth this considering it's Overwhelmingly Positive on Steam. It doesn't do a great job with the gameplay loop as there's far too much boring movement between points or waiting for the Loddles to do stuff. It's not bad, and for some I'm sure they'll look past it wasting their time and just love the cozy and cute aspects of it, but I felt like they could have done so much better with it.

According to the game itself I'm 45% in Far Cry Primal. If you like to use bows instead of rifles in games like Crysis, Far Cry or Sniper Ghost Warrior this is your game.

Pretty sure having 3 games finished already and being this efficient is illegal.
They're the short games. Volume is also fairly short but my last game is Cyberpunk 2077 so expect that to take some time. I've put about six hours into it so far. (and roughly 90 minutes into Volume and I'm around 1/4 through that one).

Finished Tunic. It's pretty good.

I ended up looking up a thing about the golden path as a confirmation that I'm on the right track and after confirming that I was, I just looked up the entire solution because at that point it would have been just busywork.
Not going to bother with all the hidden secrets. Or all achievements as that would require quite a significant NG+ time for the piggybank one.

Update on two games that are now completed.

Lies of P (Got the Rise of P Ending) - The game started off strong, but by mid/late game it turned into a very mediocre game . It's also when the game starts to heavily rely on having two-phases for every boss fight, with the second phase starting off at full-health again. Mid to late-game bosses are a slog and not fun to fight at all, with badly telegraphed attacks and long combos that require the player to perfect parry most of them. The combat mechanics are poorly implemented, particularly the stamina and the perfect parry system. There's also no animation cancelling in the game. The art direction is excellent, especially for the puppet enemies.

Thronefall - A decent tower defense game that's short in length. It has a minimalist art style, which I liked. Finished it in 8.5 hours, but did not bother to engage with most of the optional challenges since I did not find them to be fun at all. Extremely grindy with a lot of trial & error.

Finished my first game of the blitz: Chorus.
It's a poster child of the 7/10 descriptor. It's competently made and doesn't fail at anything but doesn't excel in anything either. It's a perfect AA game that holds it's ground and sometimes manages to punch above it's weight class.
Even though there aren't that many space fighter jet sims with arcade-ish controls it manages to stand out. It doesn't reach Everspace or Freelancer levels of awesomeness and freedom but it's fun enough.

Far Cry Primal has the perfect length and forces you to be more aggresive and less stealthy.

I thought Forsaken was going to play like Descent but its more of a 3D ship shooter inside tight corridors.

Finished Tinykin, remained pleasant and breezy.
Didn't even need to do the racing stuff for all achievements so that's one more 100% game to the pile.

I have two games left, both are a bit bigger at least in budget than my other games. I'll likely start with Dishonored 2.

Scorn finished. Good art and atmosphere but that's all it has going for it, it drags on quite a bit and despite that is really short, the story is nonexistant and the combat sucks ass.

Sad since it was on my radar for a long time. Welp, onto the next.

Bllitz done!

Volume - What a slog. It's just not engaging or fun to play. It's Metal Gear Solid VR machines with pacifist mode and a range of gadgets available in most missions. But the unreliable behavior of the guards (they love to swivel around in weird ways that you simply can't predict) on top of most of the 100 levels having spots where you just constantly have to wait for meters to fill (and with each checkpoint reload the meters start empty so you wait again and again and again) made me really just kind of hate playing it. Also, the writing, acting, and story stuff I just couldn't give less of a shit about. What a turd.

Cyberpunk 2077 - Great game! Never touched until now so I don't know the pain of the launch and original systems but what's there now is quite well made, dense, and a ton of fun writing and interesting things to do and complete. I didn't come close to 100% and I'll do more when I go back for Phantom Liberty. My only main annoyance is waiting for phone calls to progress some missions and wasting literal hours waiting for some calls (that never came in so I didn't finish my Judy romance). Also, I would have picked Panam if I could. Guess that's where mods will help when I return!

I enjoyed it overall but there were definitely some frustrating remnants of the past left in this (level design, no checkpoints, etc). I'm glad I was able to experience it but this doesn't seem like something I would want to replay.

Just finished Forsaken. No wonder nobody talks about the game: if you thought spawning enemies behind you in games like Quake were bad in Forsaken they are 50% of the enemy encounters. Level design is very samey with very little variation. You don't get to keep weapons or power ups after completing a level. And of course, timed levels that are a real pain in the ass. Play it through once, never again. I'm going to hear those homing missiles for days.

Thats game number 3 of the season.

I've never poked my head into this thread but it seems like a great idea. I keep a whole bunch of (relatively) shorter games installed on my steam deck with the intention of playing and finishing them at some point but I just never seem to get around to them. Maybe I'll give this blitz a shot the next time you guys do one of these threads to see if that can motivate me into playing them.

Godspeed to everyone who decided to take on this challenge in these crazy busy months we have going on right now :thumbsupblob:

Time for a little update.

Finished Venba and it genuinely made me a bit teary eyed. Such a sweet little story with so many powerful messages. Super short but it didn't need to be any longer than it was.

Also finished Jusant. I enjoyed it but I think it dropped the ball at the end. It was fun mechanically and following the characters stories through the logbooks spread throughout the levels was very well done, especially the "main" character story but it all lead to nothing because the game just ends and the biggest questions aren't ever answered, or even adressed tbh. Felt like the devs didn't know how to close the game.

Finally tried the Lamplighters League and it was absolute trash, just a miserable buggy and broken experience. Swapped it for Urtuk which was fine but showed all it's cards right at the start and when I noticed the game would be another 30h of doing the same things with the same characters without any real progression or story thread to follow I jumped out.
I replaced that with what I'm currently playing, Lost Eidolons. I also have issues with it but at least the main story is very good and surprisingly grounded, all things considered. It's been 25h so far and it seem I'm only halfway through it so it's still going to take a bit...

I briefly considered it while posting but there really is too much new stuff to play right now. I'm currently, slowly getting stuck into Civ 7. I've been trying to play the Path of Exile 2 campaign with a friend in co-op whenever we can align schedules. I'm also behind on 2 mihoyo RPGs in terms of story progress that I'd like to catch up on. And all this needs to be done hopefully before the end of the month when monster hunter arrives and consumes my life :p

I will note that there's no strict rules on what you add to the Blitz so some people do list games that haven't even released yet when the Blitz begins knowing it's a new game they'll want to play through. As far as I'm concerned when asked what's eligible, those are just future backlog games that you're clearing before they can get added to the pile so it's all fair.

But yeah, no pressure, join whenever you want. There's no cost to join, though I do accept donations to make the quarterly raffle prize larger (though I think it's been like two years since anyone has chipped in?), but obviously there's no need for anyone to do so to take part.

I will post because I should probably be more sociable, even if social media is a scant means of social interaction.

  1. American Arcadia - don't even know why I know what this is, but I've been drawn to its art for what feels like years... even though it came out in late 2023, so I don't know how I developed this false impression. Looks like Inside but made for my personal tastes.
  2. Despot's Game: Dystopian Battle Simulator - another game that feels as if it's been at the back of my mind for years because of its art. I've been interested in the auto-battler genre recently, and this is one of those.
  3. Pistol Whip - I just about exclusively use VR to exercise. I want to start playing more VR games too. Here's a game I'm interested in that can count as both.
  4. Sanabi - supposed to be a great grapple hook based game. Sounds like my thing.
  5. Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy - the movies have been comfort food lately, so I want more Guardians.
You can exclude me from the raffle, I don't need more videogames.

Finished Dungeons of Hinterberg. I played it on Tough Mode and completed all the side content and achievements. Had I played this game last year, it would’ve most likely made it to my top games list.

I enjoyed the game from start to finish, and it’s overall a very pleasant experience, albeit a bit simple when it comes to puzzles. The dungeon puzzles are on the easier side, and the game never gets too complex with its puzzle design. However, each dungeon is unique and plays out differently. I also really like how the two sets of magical powers (which are used for puzzles and environmental problem-solving) are unique to each of the four worlds, which keeps the experience fresh. The art style is excellent, and the music largely fits the theme it’s going for, with some standout tracks.

Of course, there’s a bit more to the game than just the dungeons, and that’s where the lite-Persona-esque elements come into play. You basically have a relationship system where ranking up with each of the 16 individuals unlocks all kinds of perks that enhance Luisa’s combat prowess and the world around you. The writing is actually pretty decent, too!

If you're looking for a relaxing and pleasant game to play, I highly recommend this one.
