i'm a little surprised and disappointed there wasn't a release date

as for the game it sounds very ambitious, it makes me really curious how they'll handle tutorialization and UI because it sounds like it'll literally take hundreds of hours to even sort of know what you're doing

the announcement being in a castle was cute, i'm a sucker for that sort of thing

The first 2 games were linear within a free roaming city with nothing to do, so it's more or less a return to form.
Can't talk about the 3rd as I never played it.

It was the same in the third one as well. The open world has always been set dressing in these games. They're just getting rid of it this time. That being said, from the trailer it looks like a pretty generic 3rd person stealth and action game with the Mafia label stuck onto it. It's a pretty far cry from the Mario Puzo inspired Mafia setting and atmosphere the series is known for. Might be too far for some.

wait linear mafia, not really what I look for in a mafia game. then I guess makes sense the lower price
Hope it sells well so these stupid publishers get the message - people want good games, shoving open-world not only increases needless bloat but also needless cost.

Though knowing how general audience are (and not the enthusiast audience), that might not happen. Stupid people look at hr/price ratio and then buy, that's how Ubisoft is able to sell their overly bloated games year after year.

If it's like Mafia II without the open world faux GTA stuff then it could be the best Mafia game yet. Pretty sure everyone loved Mafia II except how pointless and really devoid of anything the between story mission bits were (if pretty). I know I did, it's a better game if you rush the story, treat the city as background tbh, because investing any more in that kills immersion (as it's a barely interactive facade) and the gameplay/story pacing too. Similarly for L.A. Noire really.

The original Mafia had ambition to do more with the open world even if it's now old, clunky and simplistic on that front and I haven't seen it done right anyway.

is this game about cuisine? I just read like "investigator called on to solve one of the UK's most prolific crimes" and it has the picture of the person who sew their mouth shut so they didnt have to eat it anymore
yes, it's basically off-brand Kitchen Nightmares

Why so aggressive? How are people stupid for liking open games? Couldn’t you argue the opposite, that stupid people need a linear game because otherwise they don’t know what to do?😂

Seriously though, I personally can’t with linear games, they stress me out. Claustrophobic feeling. For me the medium is about exploring worlds, there isn’t much exploring if it’s a linear corridor .

There's plenty room between corridor and open world. Like Souls or Metro vs Elden Ring and STALKER. Not every game should be about exploration/can't be engaging/fun/challenging in other ways (even more linear than corridors, like fighting games). Of course it can be done right or wrong regardless, linear game x being bad doesn't make all linear games bad and the same goes for open worlds (which can be linear themselves and non open world stuff can be less linear). Thought you've posted stuff like hype for a potential Half-Life 3 so I imagine you've enjoyed linear games before (or I guess also hope linear franchises can change to open world so no reason to be mad at the reverse). Linear games can draw you in their world and immerse you in ways outside "see that mountain, you can go there" for sure. Or they can have a completely different intent like be a thrill ride start to finish, whether cinematic or gameplay driven or whatever...

Mafia games open world was not pointless. It serves to immerse the player in its period setting on deeper level. Just because it is not a sandbox filled with some "activities" and sidequests doesn't mean it has no purpose. Every Mafia game would be a worse game if instead of the open city you just went from mission to mission via loading screens.

Mafia 3 went furthest into "sandbox" style open world, I also enjoyed it but they made some design missteps there. The city was still super atmospheric though.

Mafia Old Country looks fantastic, I just hope they managed to wrangle good performance out of the UE5.

Yeah it seems needlessly judgmental to call someone stupid for wanting a certain type of game. Everyone has their preferences. Some people might have financial constraints and want the best bang for their buck. Some folks are casual gamers who only play a couple of games a year and want them to last. Some people only care to play games of their favorite sport like football or formula one. Personally, I have a strong preference for short games as I get older. I sometimes spend days or weeks mulling over whether to start a long game. And by long I mean games that are 100-150 hours long which will take me 2+ months to complete. I only have the stamina to play 1 or 2 of those games in a year. The last one I did was Cyberpunk 2077 in early 2024. But at the same time, I can put hundreds of hours playing multiplayer games that I enjoy. In recent times I've effortlessly crossed 100 hours in Monster Hunter, Marvel Rivals and Girls Frontline 2. I don't think it's right to judge people on what or how or where they play games.

I don't really have a preference on open world or linear games. Taking Zelda as an example, I can enjoy Breath of the Wild and Skyward Sword all the same. Both are great in what they try to accomplish.

Mafia going linear is a bold choice, and the trailer looks pretty darn good. Very cool.

I think I like open world games when the exploration is rewarding. It doesn't have to be packed to the brim with activities, collectables and what nots. It just needs to feel like I can get lost in it for countless hours and still feeling like I've accomplished something at the end of the day.

Even a simple fetch quest can be rewarding if it's done right. The riddle quests in XenobladeX are good examples of this. :flare_bath:

I don't much enjoy completely linear and narrow games like those we used to get in the PS360 generation, likely due to the limitations of the hardware. Between those and an open world I'll take the open world since I enjoy exploration, but for me the best of both worlds is open levels in the style of Deus Ex, Thief and such. You get both the joy of exploration and the authorship of the world by the developer so that empty terrain and busywork is kept to a minimum.

We had open worlds (almost) since gaming's inception, like The Lords of Midnight or NES Zelda. The PS360 era is actually when most still current open world trends solidified between the Assassin's Creeds, Arkhams, Infamous, Saints Rows, MGSV, GTA4/5, RDR, TES/Fallout, FarCry 2+, Just Cause 2+, Sleeping Dogs and more. Maybe you're confusing many of those as being of the next generation because they were still relevant for years with re-releases, similar sequels etc., remasters can even pass as modern games, though we had plenty even earlier seeing as many were successors to previous generation or 2D era titles...

I do think it was during the PS360 era that there was this ambition to make "cinematic set-piece" games, I remember those were the exact words used in what they wanted to incorporate into Assassins Creed, that did lead to less open mission structure.

Speaking of o(ld)pen worlds I had no idea Singleton's games were remade/being remade by fans...

Last I had seen were these remakes for mobiles/tablets and later PC too. Dang they're already old.

Hmm, they shoulda made a Mount & Blade Solstice game, would play, a bit more guided and purposeful with cooler more epic setting/premise a la LOTR...

I like the Location + Overworld map type of "open world" games.
You didn't have a real open world, it was also impractical to make everything fit every location in a narrow map.
But take CRPG's like Baldurs Gate 1 + 2 or Arcanum as an example. You had an overworld map where you traveled to locations. And then you had the city maps and rural locations.
Not everything in the City had a gameplay or story reason to exist, many were not traversable. But they were needed for the immersion.
And I would argue it was more satisfying to explore than a fully traversable open world, because you had to FIND secret locations that you could traverse. There was often a reason why you could go into a house or location.

Don't get me wrong, I love my Bethesda open worlds (not the Ubisoft type, though)
But when every house in a city is walkable and 90% are generic houses with no relevance, why explore the 5th city when you are fed up with finding the 10% that have relevance?
