Yeah something like that is what I was thinking about, at some point I tried out moshimoshi@lepertti.com loooolPublic-facing ones can be a bit more exciting, like letstalk@lepertti.com
you're welcomeInstalled Zen to check it out because it's so pretty @lashman![]()
Late to the party as I've not been visiting these parts regularly but what a fantastic thread and so much useful info
Definitely worrying news about Switzerland as I've been slowly migrating my stuff from Googoo to Proton.
Installed Zen to check it out because it's so pretty lashman
Still wondering what search engine to use, DuckDuckGo used to be pretty bad for me last time, Kagi is paid so I installed the free version to check it out but I already see they also have a bunch of ai stuff included ("use AI to filter out AI images" XD). Has anyone tried Brave Search? I know Brave come with their own baggage but maybe it's at least good.
Having tried the free Kagi trial it was easily the best search engine I've used.I may switch back to Safari while I am in the Apple ecosystem.
There are features and apps that hook into Safari features that will be far more beneficial to me privacy-wise than a third party browser will be.
Password and bookmark sync won't be used, however. I'll stick to Proton and my own self-hosted bookmarking app for that.
As for search engines though, I am 100% Kagi all the way. Yes, I pay monthly for it, but the results are also better than Google.
I'm fairly sure I've finally decided on a domain name. Was brainstorming earlier in the week and came up with some options that are available and put them on a txt file so I don't forget and to also sit on them and stew them a bit and see if I still like them in a few days. So we might have a winner.
Porkbun seems like a well liked registrar these days. I used namecheap last time I had a domain and they were totally fine but I have no loyalty or anything to them. So I guess I'll probably go with porkbun. It's also a pretty solid name, porkbun I mean. They clearly need to teach lessons on how to come up with good domain names.
It does occur to me that since I'm not really planning to have a homepage, just a domain for emails, not sure how that actually works in practice. In the past I've always done the opposite, no emails, just a webpage.
Is the webpage just going to be like a placeholder thing, or maybe I should redirect it to my social media or something. I guess I could make it a simple static page or something too if I really feel like it. I could probably get hosting for cheap (and by cheap I mean free) from a friend if I wanted to.
what about VSCodium? My next goal, find a more ethical code editor! Since I mostly use VS code for all non godot coding. Thinking I would maybe go for NeoVIM but what other alternatives are there? What are you all using?
hmh very interesting ! I want to distance myself from Microsoft so this would still be connected to them in a way, but enough that I might actually use that.what about VSCodium?

That’s filled with bots!!fediverse is riiiiiiiiiiiiight over here ...
not anymore, those always get handled pretty fastThat’s filled with bots!!
I am also currently thinking about ditching VS Code.My next goal, find a more ethical code editor! Since I mostly use VS code for all non godot coding. Thinking I would maybe go for NeoVIM but what other alternatives are there? What are you all using?
I really don't think they should comply with these gov't orders though. I definitely don't think age verification should be happening anywhere under any circumstances.![]()
TechCrunch (@TechCrunch@mstdn.social)

but but but - they've been saying since the very beginning it's decentralizedI really don't think they should comply with these gov't orders though. I definitely don't think age verification should be happening anywhere under any circumstances.
I don't know what they can do. Actually fully p2p encrypted network maybe?
So how is mastodon going to handle mandatory age checks?but but but - they've been saying since the very beginning it's decentralized
decentralized my ass, more like
it's not, what are they gonna do - block thousands of instances? So how is mastodon going to handle mandatory age checks?
i gotchu, famTime to come up with the Internet 2
Age checks are definitely going to be a EU wide thing. Cant they block the protocol?it's not, what are they gonna do - block thousands of instances?sure, they can block a few, and a few of them can comply, but that doesn't really change anything
also - mastodon doesn't even have any tech to comply, and they don't have to do shit since they're in Germany
they can't, it's like torrent - pretty much unkillable, because it actually IS decentralizedAge checks are definitely going to be a EU wide thing. Cant they block the protocol?
But an ISP can block torrent traffic though, maybe they will force the same with mastodon. Only thing going for mastodon right now is that it has zero political threat to anyone lol, so no one cares enough to block it, but they could if they wanted to.they can't, it's like torrent - pretty much unkillable, because it actually IS decentralized
they can't - it communicates via html, they can only block a specific web address or an ipBut an ISP can block torrent traffic though, maybe they will force the same with mastodon. Sure but activitypub has a specific header but the easiest would be to just block, not an instance but the whole host, like masto host. Or easier yet, any instance not implementing age check would be at risk of being fined.they can't - it communicates via html, they can only block a specific web address or an ip
just like they're blocking torrents?Sure but activitypub has a specific header but the easiest would be to just block, not an instance but the whole host, like masto host. Or easier yet, any instance not implementing age check would be at risk of being fined.
Well by law they are going to implement that ISPs have to block torrent sites. So yeah it IS happening.just like they're blocking torrents?nah, not gonna happen, i can guarantee it
Well by law they are going to implement that ISPs have to block torrent sites. So yeah it IS happening.
I mean that is obviously what they want, they wouldnt be age gating fucking wikipedia otherwise. Remember the backlash against chat control? where is it now? they will keep trying to implement stuff as many times it takes to get it passed.blocking the open web
yes, but my point is that bsky or wikipedia are SINGULAR websites, fediverse isn't - they would literally have to either keep blocking every single new instance that pops up (which is basically impossible) or they'd have to block the ENTIRE internet in UKI mean that is obviously what they want, they wouldnt be age gating fucking wikipedia otherwise.
