you don't really need portainer for basic stuff :P you only really need to have docker compose installed (which you most likely already have)

then you just grab the compose file from whatever you want to install (most of them have one), drop it in a folder somewhere, navigate to it in terminal and

First thing Im trying to do is being able to remote control it? Is that not possible? Seems like a obvious first step to do on a server.

tbh i haven't really done that particular part, but as long as you're able to SSH into your linux you should be able to remote control it - it's all done via terminal anyway

I tried self-hosted productivity solutions and it was a frustrating experience that I couldn’t get working. So I’ve passed on Nextcloud. The UI is also shit.

I also think I need a bit more reliability for my productivity stuff than I can get from self-hosting that part of my life, so I made the decision to ultimately pass on Nexcloud until someone makes a more usable alternative.

Even so, if there is an alternative, I do not find self-hosting such a complex and mission critical application to be very sensible. I can’t have my entire productivity stack broken due to an update, which is a common theme with self-hosting.

Proton Drive needs better Linux support indeed. It’s probably their biggest flaw, and hopefully they improve that.

But other than Linux support, what Proton offers fits my needs and threat model kind of perfectly. I need Google’s office suite (especially docs and spreadsheets), but not Google. I don’t mind doing docs and spreadsheets in a browser (in fact, I prefer it) but I don’t want my data to be used to advertise at me or train a LLM.

This also breaks my dependency on iCloud Drive for docs, so I can become more OS agnostic (Linux issues notwithstanding), which is more important for my needs than data sovereignty (and, to be fair, everything on Proton is encrypted).

I think the Proton stack is pretty perfect for me. I ignore the crypto and AI stuff, and the rest of it works well.

I've always found it absolutely ludicrous that any official public institution would communicate through a privately-owned channel.
That isn't OK even if it is privately owned by a company in the same country. Having it privately owned by a mega-corporation in another country is completely beyond the pale.

This is so important that I actually think there should be laws against it.

The neoliberal idea of public-private partnerships is inherently broken in almost every aspect.

I totally agree with you, but I think it goes beyond using private comms channels. Pretty much any sort of privately owned infrastructure that, should the owner decide to restrict access, would cause literal or reputational damage to the public body or the citizens they serve should be illegal.

The amount of governments around the world who rely on Google or Microsoft’s suite of applications, for example, is utterly staggering.

Data related to citizens and policies that affect citizens are one or another billionaire’s tantrum away from being locked out from the authorities. And as taxpayers we’re paying for the privilege of that.

Ooh, I also need to look into these. I don't use google sheets much, but replacing my game count tracking with non-google shit has been on my todo list for a while.

And yeah self hosting next cloud or something like that is a bit too hard core for my actual needs.

This sort of story shouldn't be considered an exception but the norm and the rule.

I always expect this to be possible at a moment's notice. This morning I saw an email 'we're closing your Google account', my first assumption is that Google didn't like how I was using the free Gemini Pro plan I recently signed up for. I have been using it heavily to extract as much value from it as possible, a good portion for training local AI models (distillation of a sorts). But the email was regarding an old disused Google account.

ALWAYS assume EVERY account-locked thing you have can and will be taken away without recourse at ALL TIMES. Not joking. All backups should always be local. You can use the cloud for an extra dynamic layer but just assume that is gone too. I cannot fucking imagine using a cloud to store your personal photos, locking away your memories behind an account forever -- that's precisely what iOS does if you enable the Cloud by default.

It shouldn't be this way. Ironically I could imagine most ancient kings handling this situation better than a corporation.

I also kind of find it offensive when people have pledged their lives to a company like this, because they effectively become soldiers for that cause.

Migrated my two important spreadsheets that I use semi-regularly over to Proton Spreadsheets, and now I'm basically off Big Tech almost completely.

The only two things left I have are iCloud Drive (for photos) and Apple Music.

Once I find replacements for those two, I will basically be able to move between any OS and device and not have any pain doing so. Feels great to be almost completely free of tech lock-in.

I liked Immich, but I don’t really want to put my photos on my home server that I then need to maintain, so I’m looking for a turnkey solution.

Currently Proton Drive backs up my photo library in addition to iCloud, but it won’t sync in the background as it has to encrypt photos on device before uploading. So not ideal.

My main goal with photo storage is to not host it somewhere where I will struggle to migrate elsewhere (Apple) or have my and my friends/family’s likeness used in AI or advertising (Google).

So I’m thinking possibly Ente Photos.

Swing Music looks cool, but you’re locked out of Apple devices by the looks of it, so it’s even worse than Apple Music, which currently only excludes Linux. Plus I need discovery features so I’m not listening to the same songs over and over, as I am incapable of finding new music by myself.

I don’t mind self-hosting my music, but I really need help finding music and I’ve found Apple Music is just really damn good at that.

The one thing that Proton needs to improve on their sheets (at least) is the loading speed.
I imported my game completion sheet there to test it out a bit and it takes much longer to load, even beyond just the decryption step.
At least on my end it's like 8-10 seconds just hitting reload on the browser toolbar.

I don’t mind a slightly longer initial load, but I find it lags a bit on the spreadsheet itself, which is annoying.

Hopefully they follow up their web apps with desktop versions that use your device’s CPU to process this kinda thing.
