Surprised with SRWV's number considering it's more niche than Digimon and region locked.
Well, Mechas are way more popular in Asia than in the west, I'm not surprised at all that it pulled those numbers even with the region lock, Digimon tho, I could have expected more for an IP that have been with us since late 90's

What are the chances that we will see the new Star Wars game on Steam? It seems like they want to copy the MS approach and saw that people were signing up for Game Pass in hordes for Gears 5.

Want to play Star Wars early? Gotta sign up for Origin Premier. The rest gets to pay almost $80 on Steam.

i wouldn't count on it tbh ... they clearly still want people to use origin (even for non-subscription stuff)

i mean - it'll probably eventually come to steam as well ... just much, much later

EA has some cool, mostly older stuff, they could release on Steam.

The Westwood Studios games would be most welcome (don't forget they have been working on a remaster of the Command & Conquer series).

Sea of Solitude is a game I would like to check out.
I never played Mass Effect 3 (yeah, I know how much people dislike it :face-with-stuck-out-tongue-and-winking-eye:), so I would probably give it a go if it launched on Steam, as a "complete" edition with all the DLCs.

if i had to guess i'd say that probably most (if not all) of their non-gaas-monetized-to-hell-and-back stuff will eventually make its way to steam (i don't really consider The Sims 4 gaas per se ... there are no "micro"transactions there ... just shitloads of DLC)

The performance of recent Japanese RPG releases based on CCU peak:

Digimon Story Cyber Sleuth: 2.4k
Doraemon Story of Seasons: 1.4k
Dragon Star Varnir: 318
Grandia HD Remaster: 301
Super Robot Wars V: 2.2k
I find it interesting that Digimon is at that level in CCU, since I've never seen it on top (or even on a sustained high) of the global top seller list (and it's not even in the top 25 right now).
As a comparison, e.g. Disco Elysium was #1 for a while at its release and is still in the top 5, but it "only" has a 5.1k peak.

There' obviously a relation between CCU and sales, but it seems like it can vary pretty significantly between genres and individual games.
(Of course, there's also the fact that the placement in the top seller chart will have very different meanings depending on what else is on there)

Actually, I just reloaded the top sellers and now Digimon is at #13. Strange. Fits much better with its CCU though!

A while ago I paid EA 4 euros for a month of EA Access so I could mop up any worthwhile singleplayer content they had, including Titan fall 2 and Mass Effect 3. I found Mass Effect to be very enjoyable. The ending is clearly rushed but the rest of the game is pretty cool.

The only recent EA game I'm really interested in is Unravel 2 for local coop. I'd buy that on Steam.
yeah, exactly ... like i said - other than the EA originals (or whatever they call them these days) and maaaaaybe The Sims 4 - i'm really not interested in any of the new EA games ... like, at all ... not even Need for Speed, as long as they keep insisting it's a series about underground racing bullshit

Just upgraded my CPU from i4460 to Ryzen 3600 and now I can play these games at 4K 60fps yay.

I suppose this has to do with how well received the game is globally (so more people but on many different time zones) opposed to selling particularly well in a single region (less people but on a single time zone).

Like I previously mentioned, constant bad experiences with crowdfunding campaigns have made me pretty much stop backing anything.
The Shenmue 3 situation is a painful reminder (another day, and still nothing), but it's not an isolated case.

So, in other awesome crowdfunding news, here's the latest update by the developer of Battle Princess Madelyn, another game I backed, where he tries to explain why he is releasing the version he wanted of the game all along as a Switch exclusive through Limited Run Games, complains that adding backers as NPCs (a promised kickstarter reward) kinda ruined the game, and my favourite bit, he probably won't release the new "director's cut" version of the game on PC because the original game was "pirated a bit too much", among other things.

I spoiled the text, because it's a big wall of text.


People are asking where the physicals are. They are coming. We have been assured they will be sent out before the pre ordered versions go out. Which was just announced today by LRG.


AND NOW....


WHAT IS ROYAL EDITION?!? AND CAN I HAVE IT INSTEAD OF THE REGULAR VERSION?!?


First off - I did Royal Edition on my own time, alone (aside of audio/design/testing). I wanted a version that was closer to my vision of the game before there was talk of CMA or Kickstarter Funding at all - just me and Maddi working on the game. If you may recall the original kickstarter design had both modes of the game played in the same levels. But I ended up needing way more room for NPCS and their quests. But before that it was just a flat out arcade game with minor dialog - the prototype I was making with Maddi originally. There were only a few things missing from the prototype but they were ditched for design reasons while working on the actual game. Being able to carry only two weapons is pointless when you have a whole inventory of things for example. So that was never added to the final hud or coded.


Anyhow - this has nothing to do with me hating the game or "oh you just gave us the beta"... This game (the one you backed)is what the Kickstarter is supposed to be. It's just not what I wanted it to be originally. The PS4 Version that LRG is doing is the Kickstarter version, which they'll be sending you with different artwork.


The Royal Edition exists because:


A) I wanted to see what my version of the game would have been like.


B)I can code the additional bits for Switch myself and there are no extra hoops to jump through with controllers, users profiles, rich presence, and achievements - this was all done out of house for ps4 and xbox one. And it costs a lot of money to have people code for you. I did the Royal Edition with my own time and my own money.


C) Aside of physical (and japan version in general) I've had to do all of the digital publishing stuff on my own and it is A LOT of work. Nintendo is the easiest one to deal with as well.


Here is the official statement I did for LRG:


"Part way through development, it became clear that the game was straying from it's originally intended roots. The game was intended to be Story Mode and Arcade mode in the same level set. But with all of the added extras of the Kickstarter and story additions added to appease the CMF funding we never ended up getting, the levels needed to be made much bigger and the flow no longer worked for the arcade. It became more "fetch quest" and less of an action adventure game that was originally designed, this was due to accommodating all of the backer NPCs. We continued on this path and I separated the Levels into two sets: One designed for story mode - the original levels and one designed just for arcade mode. And while we were happy with the way the game turned out in the long run - it wasn't the game I had originally set out to make. So I pulled out my old designs from before Kickstarter and CMA funding application, which required us to alter and add certain story bits to meet their criteria for submission. I began to change things to be the way they were before either mode existed and more like my prototype. My partner/lead developer of CBG had also left at the time to pursue another career, therefore I had personally reprogrammed a lot of different things for this version of the game. You'll see the movement for skeletons resembles the movement of my prototype as it was originally intended. Little things such as this will have changed as well.

The long winded story mode was cut completely. This was never meant to last more than two hours, but you could easily spend 10 in it if you wanted to for story mode. I redesigned all of the arcade levels from scratch working with a few other designers to make sure I got it greatly fine tuned. I’ve also added new art, new enemies and bosses, and even had Gryzor87 to whip up some new tunes. I truly went to town on a full arcade experience. Cutting the in game dialog out completely but keeping the opening and ending cinematics intact. The King Daddy mode has also been polished for the more veteran player and you'll have to complete the game twice to get his ending!

The controls have changed - Fritzy becomes your sword. The sword is now an auto Melee attack when an enemy gets too close to the player, and pressing down and attack when above an enemy will always pogo now.

The player has two weapons in a similar fashion to Contra (in Maddi mode only) so you can change up your play style for bosses. Lobbed weapons are more powerful and straight throw weapons have better range but not as much power. Having one of each when you get to a boss fight is always the best way to go!

The game is also now in 4:3 mode with a few wallpapers to select from. One of them being Madelyn's original art for boss fight and enemy designs. I decided to go with this mode as a lot of people have been making mini arcade machines out of their switches to play the game and the smaller screen gives it a much more authentic feel and doesn't take away from the game at all.

So in short, Royal Edition is a director's cut of arcade mode. It's a few levels longer and much more diverse than the original game’s arcade mode with many changes to the play style. 10 Levels of Action 11 bosses to fight including 3 of them being completely new.

Like an original arcade game - it's short but very challenging. The way it should be. Seasoned players will find all of the purposeful speed run short-cuts in the game, while new players will find the controls and movement much more forgiving than the original.

King Daddy mode is double the length but no throwable weapons to up the challenge. He also has no armor - just pants, so he takes less hits than Maddi. Using his pogo ability will find you making your way through the game with far more ease!

Madelyn and I are very proud of this Nintendo Switch exclusive of the game and we're very happy that Limited Run has given us a chance to show it off!"

The long winded bit is referring to all of the NPC dialog. This is what reviewers referred to as "the pointless fetch quests". I don't mind them and you don't have to do them. But a lot of non backers didn't like it. But I had some personal emails sent to me about "please please please don't put us all in one room in a bar or something." So I gave in and wrote dialog and made objects for you to collect so Maddi would directly interact with you in the game instead of just "hello my name is XXX". And I didn't mind doing any of it at all and I thought it was a nice personal touch. I love the original game the way it is.


People are asking if I can do this Royal Edition as an update. That is impossible as I rewrote parts of the game. The controls are partially rewritten, bits of the camera, at least 60-70% of the savegame code, The hud has changed, Fritzy is your melee weapon permanently so you can't get those melee weapons that were in the original game - this changes the Fritzy code. The chomp was removed too in favor of the sword. Power ups have been changed etc etc. Bits of the loading have been changed too. All of these changes will completely wreck story mode and the original engine overall.


So Royal Edition is by design a simple arcade game and not the game you backed. The original game is exactly the game that was intended for Kickstarter. You did not get "our beta", you were not "our beta testers". The kickstarter game was designed for the kickstarter in the long run. And I do wholeheartedly apologize for the bugs when the game launched.


Since there were no Switch physicals offered we can't simply switch you over as they cost more than PS4 and PC to produce. When I set a date for digital sales I will look into getting a discount code just for backers - but Switch keys are not free for us. This is something I found out the hard way after we had done the Kickstarter - we do have to pay for them.


It's also been almost a year since the original game came out. We're at about 10 months now I believe. And we've done tons of bug fixes and updates to make the game better. And with the lead developer gone, It's just me.


So to sum it up:


- I'm still working on the Vita version, which won't even remotely pay for itself at this point but I want to see it through and it will require heavy reprogramming of the player and AI. I am using my own solo project code to reprogram the bad code in BPM for Vita. I'm also extremely bummed about the Wii U version but the final Unity update for Wii U broke the game.


- I'm still making sure everything for Kickstarter is getting done, and it is!


- The LRG backer version with all the goodies will be shipped out before the pre order versions of Switch and PS4.


- The Royal Edition is an Alternate Edition of Arcade Mode Only, there is no story mode. It was made solely on my time and my dime. It is only coming out on Switch for now because there is no magic porting button and our PS4/XB1 ports were done out of house (I can code the extra bits for switch). It probably won't come out on PC because the original was pirated a little too much. Aside of the boss fights (with the exception of 3 new ones) and the opening and ending sequences and fonts, things have changed a lot. It is its own game. Not better, not worse - just a lot of my original designs implemented that were cut for CMF or Kickstarter. It's just different. Nothing to get offended over! No one is forcing you to buy it. And again it's different from the original - not better or worse.


I will think about doing Royal Edition for PS4 but it will require bringing someone in to code the achievements again and make sure all of the extra PS4 bits are intact as I was solely focused on Switch and may have wiped something out redoing old code. So if there is demand for it I'll see what I can do.


As for timelines - don't ask. I've literally had one decent break in 5 years (2 weeks this summer!). I've worked almost every holiday to get this stuff done and I am beyond burnt out. I've still been doing patches etc for PS4 so the disc could be finalized while doing the new version of the game, while doing all of the digital publishing work alone. All of this, while getting through the crazy hoops to get PS4 EU completed as well. And old bugs thought fixed in the original game because there was no way to trigger them anymore were exposed while doing the Royal Edition, so I've been fixing those bugs as they come along on top of it all. Then there is coding my new game on my own :) while also designing the layouts for the boxes for all of the NA physical versions because I really enjoy doing that stuff, and did a few other surprises.


My days are insane most of the time. And I have a three year old I've barely seen since she was born because I've been locked to my pc working. So I will be slowing down a little bit :)


Limited Run Games has been awesome to us too! I've been working closely with them to get the new version of the game out as well as the PC and PS4 originals for backers. And they've been helping with and handling every aspect of not only the PS4 Physical copies but also the Switch one. So thank you guys for not giving up on us when a lot of other people did. And I will of course never stop praising Gryzor87! His work ethic and talent are beyond godly!

That's a good point, I didn't think of that.
And of course CCU, especially for single player games, is probably also influenced more (than sales are) by how close the release is to the weekend.

almost definitely ...

i mean - what would even be the point in releasing something like The Division 2 a year later on steam? it's a "live" game ... and everyone who buys it on steam day one is already 12 months behind on everything (including limited time events)

With all the bad stories you've shared and all the money wasted I'm honestly surprised it took you this long to stop supporting crowdfunding.

It only took the whole Epic debacle for me and I never really had any particularly bad experiences before (other than Kologeon). I now spend that money on actually released games.

It's Spyro time!
Again.

Spyro 2 complete.
A very safe follow up, it's Spyro 1 but with bigger worlds, more worlds. It's pretty great, even if some minigames are weaker then others. No too big, too annoying, real nice. The frequent little cutscenes add a lot of atmosphere too, even if they are plain brutal at times: why so many violent deaths?! It may be cartoony, but damn :face-with-cold-sweat:
But that second boss is indeed real bad... the guided shots are REALLY annoying to avoid, and the camera shits the bed something fierce. And it's a long fight!
It does bring some much needed difficulty, but not for the right reasons... at least the last boss is less bullshit. Still, not a game breaker but that was not a welcome change.
The FPS bug that makes you lose jump height above 30FPS though? Yeah... it's only a problem in one place, but that's not the kind of issue that should appear in a game of this caliber.

Really stupid blemishes on an otherwise great game.


And to finish Spyro 3. There's good Spyro to be found but also the dreaded playable shitty friends sections...
While most were passable enough, Agent 9 the monkey... whew lad, that one is not very good at all... the TPS format it is using doesn't work super well within the game; the other shooting parts in the franchise were just ok, but with the laser gun monkey (that also happens to be infuriatingly talkative)? Eeeh... it's bootleg Ratchet&Clank, which could have been interesting (odd that there's no real clone of that franchise too, untapped potential there) if it wasn't the shallowest part of the game yet. Jump, shoot. Coming from a game that's all about fast and fluid movement while keeping momentum, talk about a dud.

It really sucks that the game starts with Sheila the Kangaroo which is actually very fun and unique, with vertical levels rather than horizontal for Spyro, but only gets worse with each new playable character.
The flying bird with rockets is meh, the yeti is just... pointless, the monkey is pretty terrible, and the Sparx levels... ouch.
Definitely a victim of the forced variety, because most of the content is just as great as usual, with levels being even more interconnected and filled with little nooks and crannies.

But it also lost a bit of the charm of the other two games, you don't get unique and custom animations for every freed dragons like the first game, now it's just copy/paste and ugly-ass hatchlings, the levels don't have opening/ending cutscenes anymore, the characters are just less charismatic and less funny in general... it's just more diluted.

Even with issues, it's still very good... and that's the saddest part: if it was more focused on the good aspects, it would be the best in the franchise, but no, it lost itself a bit. Not uncommon in that era...
Gotta admit that it's quite hilarious that Sheila the Kangaroo is still by far the best playable marsupial of any game ever, light years ahead of Kao the Kangaroo or Ty the Tasmanian Tiger. And better than Crash Bandicoot too.

Well, many of these things only happened years after backing these games, when they are close to, or already, launched. :)

Unfortunately, only in 2018/2019 did I start seeing the results of campaigns I backed in 2015/2016/2017, so I'm sure I'll be getting quite a few "horror" stories in the near future, for games I backed previously. I'm anticipating one already with the game Once Upon A Coma.

And it's not exclusive to games.

For example, the documentary In search of Darkness (about 80's horror) is launching soon.
I backed the campaign a couple of years ago for a certain amount, for a Blu-Ray copy. Now, close to launch, the guys who made the documentary decided to release Blu-Ray editions with 20+ more minutes of footage at their website, for less than what I paid for (and with a bonus pin and other minor stuff), and I'm not getting this footage, so I'm getting a shorter version of the documentary.
An example of one of these "extended" releases:

(there's two more, all with different bonus footage; one is with the singer of Slipknot, which is no big loss, but still...)

They delayed the original launch because, according to kickstarter, they were still finishing editing the documentary. Nothing out of the ordinary.
But then, this month, when the documentary is about to launch, they came up with these releases (which they obviously didn't announce on kickstarter), making it clear what was, at least, a partial reason for the delay.

So, what's their take on backers not getting this footage, or getting a shorter version of the final product compared to other versions, despite paying more, 2+ years ago?

The indiegogo campaign for the "What We Left Behind: Looking Back at Star Trek: Deep Space 9" documentary pulled something similar, since they found a publisher, and released through it a limited edition with a bonus disc, with over 1h of footage, and both it and the single disc retail edition had HD audio tracks, while the backers edition had "lossy" audio tracks, on a single layer BD. Both released at the same time. :cautious:
Most tiers also included a digital copy, which became a streaming link, that was only active for... a week (that coincided with me being away on vacation).
But, the publisher released a 4K digital download, with better quality than anything backers were able to get their hands on, while we didn't get a download of any sort.

So yeah, these people see backers as people to "milk" for an interest-free loan, and not much more.

Game never released on Steam.

Here's where things start to get speculated about EA maybe doing a comeback of some kind but today madjoki found that one test depot added a test1 file directly linked to Origin, which means that EA might be trying to make a comeback like UBi works, linking Origin to Steam. what's funny is that the depot owner might be a Valve employee that talks with 3rd parties.

So, yeah, pretty we are following the lead of each step :)

The guys from Cloak and Dagger Games have been releasing some charming, and well received, point & click adventure games for a while now, some of them free (like their most recent Steam release, The Terrible Old Man).

Anyway, I got an extra key for a couple of their Collector's Edition DLCs for two of their games, which you can find below.
Since The Terrible Old Man is a free game, you don't need to buy anything to redeem it.

Hm interesting news about the possibility of EA games coming back to steam. The only game I ever bought on Origin was Mass Effect 3, I just had to see how the series ended. Played it through once and never really touched it again. I don't even have Origin installed on my PC anymore mainly because of that fucking Originwebhelper process that is like a bad case of gonorrhea in that just when you think you got rid of it the fucker flares up again.

However I will confess it would be tempting to have EA games back on steam even with the god awful Origin launcher. I like my games all on steam because I keep the client running and it automatically updates all my games so when I want to play them they are ready for me to play. Instead of the usual Origin experience that goes :-

start origin ..... origin needs to update ....... try to find password and login details because Origin has now forgotten them because I updated it ..... launch game ....... game needs an update ......... say fuck this, fire up steam and actually play something.

arts&crafts That's about where i'd thought it would land. Not bad at all. I know some people didn't like the way the controls feel and had some issues with bugs or the game design but it looks like a solid game from everything i've seen. I've got so much on my plate at the moment though, i can wait,

Fallout NV is my favorite game so I am there day 1! (On game pass...for $1!)

The frequent little cutscenes add a lot of atmosphere too, even if they are plain brutal at times: why so many violent deaths?! It may be cartoony, but damn :face-with-cold-sweat:
Right ? ! Almost everybody in Spyro 2 is garbage.

You tipically start off by watching a cutscene where group A is oppressing group B. Then, after helping group B, you watch a cutscene of them torturing or killing somebody from group A.

Add blood and you get Happy Tree Friends.
